In my 1st year at uni there was a PhD candidate who worked on an experiment that required white phosphorous. Then, in the middle of that he left for an international internship for several months, leaving the phosphorous safely in a glass jar under water in his lab cupboard ... Obviously the water evaporated and the phosphorous got exposed to the air.
Fortunately this happened while the best lab technician I've ever met was there. He quickly realised 1) whose cupboard it was that had started smoking and what chemical was likely stored in there, and 2) that said cupboard was on wheels. He shouted to the professor to immediately open the emergency doors and everyone else to clear a path and wheeled the cupboard outside. He then calmly walked back inside, called the front desk followed by the fire brigade. When the fire fighters arrived he told them to come enjoy the fire (it was just the cupboard burning, but quite spectacularly). Putting it out wasn't useful, just let it burn up. He had called the fire brigade just in case something would go wrong and the fire spread.
awesome story, we should all aspire to be that effective under pressure
Quick thinkers like him are life savers. The worst thing you can do at a time like that is to either hesitate and then end up with a much larger problem, or to hesitate before taking the wrong action (like maybe wheeling into it a classroom full of kids who are juggling glass bottles of gasoline).
Ah, yes fun memories... who hasn't been in a crowded hall in the chem department, while a lab tech pushing a smouldering cabinet, shouts "clear a path!"
I used to blow up lab ventilation by losing a lil sodium down the drain.

I just got here and while I enjoyed my time my biggest comment is how amazingly professional the demonstrations are. Two bricks and a sheet of glass between the cameras, a tile on top of an old wooden barrier, and an old, rusty axe-head for the ignition panel, and doing nothing but burning a dangerous, self-described "sticky fire" near arid grass.

In about 1987, I was in a high school chemistry class. During a lab exercise we used filter paper with white phosphorus. My lab partner put the filter paper in the trash can at the end of class which was the last class of the day. Apparently that evening the traces on the filter paper caught fire and luckily the janitor put it out after it burned an entire lab desk and area. The next day we were asked about it and fessed up but we weren't punished.
WP smoke is uniquely opaque to infrared, which makes it very useful in war.

In the army i was always surrounded with dangerous stuff, explosives, tank rounds ammo etc and it never bothered me. I pulled guard duty on an ammo dump once and they had WP howitzer rounds in there and they made me VERY nervous.
When I was dabbling with chemistry way back in the ‘70s, it was easy to get red phosphorus, I converted it to white phosphorus by distilling it in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide.
I eventually got a pound of white phosphorus from Selby because I produced a letter from the Health Department which said I can purchase white phosphorus from a retail source. Basically Selby’s was being stricter than the Health Department. In those days you could purchase conc sulphuric or nitric acid over the counter. And also various alkali metals and alkaline earths. Biggest obstacle was they were expensive. The phosphorus and sodium wasn’t expensive.
Funnily enough sulfuric acid was available online here in France in Europe until 2021.

@retsaM innavoiG I did the research. Unless by research you mean reading or watching western media full of propaganda for uneducated masses. Think for a moment about what you said. "Country A already has a lot of valuable resource (easily sold for the money). So, obviously, it doesn't need more of it (money)". It may sound logical only to braindead victims of public education...
Second fundamental mistake in your thought process is that 'country' decides to start the new war and get the oil. Country is an abstraction. It doesn't decides. People do.
Oligarchy/corporations lobby another war, and taxpayers pay for them, while those oligarchy/corporations sell goods for the billions of dollars to the military and gain free oil.
@retsaM innavoiG Ok, I'll try one last time. This conspiracy that "American (war) machine needs oi", which is easy to debunk, was created and presented to you by manipulators. They created invalid explanation and filled information space and, consequently, all the room in your brain.
The other explanations never got to you. In reality, oil, for example, from the Syrian Republic is sold to Turkey, Pakistan, India, etc.
About oil sold by some US companies - yes, it would cost more. But why it should bother *other* companies, which profit from selling goods, for example, to continue war in Afghanistan, for 67 billions every year? All the military contractors are getting a lot of money. All the "rebuilding" of destroyed countries costs billions every year.
Or *other* companies which got control over oil and natural gas in invaded countries?

I expected a spec ops: the line reference somewhere in this comment section
Feel like a hero! for only $3.99 per month get the white phosphorous loadout
They looked like hostiles to me on thermals officer!
Right now I sure do. I'm killing the monster responsible for all of this
*shoots himself in the head*
There's an interesting medical condition called "Phosphorus jaw" where people affected by it had hideous malformed faces due to the Phosphorus vapours being absorbed into their jawbones. Effectively dissolving their jaws over 3-6 months. Creating abscesses and having the living tissue experience necrosis. I kid you not, having their jawbones rot from the inside. This was common for match stick factory personal. Until they got proper safety equipment.
Jesus christ, and i thought the radio girls were bad
Originally called phossy jaw
@@affegpus4195 yeah man those poor radio girls. They had no idea what radio waves did to them. Tragic.
It took them years to figure out the problem and more years before the factory owners could be pressured to provide gloves and masks.

Still here 5 years later!
I really love it when I collect shiny stones on the shore here in Germany and have to gamble if Im gonna ignite myself or not. Really loved it how the allies just dumped a huge load of bombs into the sea instead of getting rid of them the environmentally friendly way.
Whats interesting is that if you try to collect bits of amber at the coast of germany (which is something that some actually make a living of) you´re always reminded that the yellowish/red piece that you think is amber could be old white phospherus ammo used during the wars so everyone who wants to collect amber on the shores of germany: never ever pick it up with bare hands, you could loose parts of your body.
That sounds horrific, but why would it not have burnt itself away when exposed to air and sun on the beach?
They made some IEDs ng phosphorus when I was in Iraq. It was terrifying for the light. We had two go off on my truck. The first was 6 feet from the truck, and I remember seeing the light and processing that before the pressure wave. I actually thought I was dead because I was completely blinded by the flash, and the pressure wave took away both my sense of hearing and made it hard to feel. The second came month later and at a greater distance. It rained down arcs of "willie P," as the gunner called it, really reminded us of how different it was than shrapnel. We spent our time off after that discussing how to treat the burns. I am glad we never needed that training, but it is definitely a visceral feeling different than the artillery rounds that made up most of the IEDs of the time.
12:21 That hit me in the feels. *as I watch while running an experiment in grad school...*
i bought some of those "magic smoke paper magic trick amazing wow fun party special effect paper" off of wish not thinking anything of it and i got that shit everywhere and it does NOT wash off and a lot of time i would just like get it on my hands lightly rinse them off then go and eat the only reason i stopped was because it was kinda dark one time when i was messing with some and i noticed that shit was GLOWING and i proceeded to do a mass google search for weather it was toxic or not and that led me here

That is why I don't trust wish
How have you not died?
What the fuck
You get what you wish for.
Zero punctuation makes that impossible to read.
me:
*casually joins match*
Narrator literally 0.7 seconds later:
*eNeMy wHiTe pHoSpHoRuS iNcOmInG!*
The most disheartening line in the entire game.
It sucks because no matter where you hide, you're still weak and can be killed easily. I fucking hate it so much. 😂
It's literally aids.
They need to get rid of it from drop zone. Let's be honest
Nigga said narrator 😐
Azidoazide azide: "I'm dangerous"
White Phosphorus: "hold my oxidation"
I love this channel
