The coolest part to me is the fact that the smoke coming off the reaction at 3:50 with the second cotton ball makes rings (you can see them better in the slow motion part). I think that's a good testament to how much force is generated by this reaction even after the initial fire goes out bc regular fire does not produce smoke rings, they appear when there's a force behind the air that's pushing them quite a bit.

But if you want to see another chemical like that, the other one I've heard of is Azidoazide Azide, which is C2N14, and basically looks like a precarious jenga tower. Azidoazide Azide doesn't even need the introduction of an extra force (that totally will set it off, but its unnecessary), it just spontaneously explodes.

Azides are always a good starting point for stuff that doesn't really want to exist. And this property also makes them valuable for syntheses. E.g. you can prepare certain pharmaceuticals used to treat high blood pressure, of the Sartan family, by reacting a precursor molecule with a nitrile group with sodium azide, in order to make that tetrazole ring, a 5-ring with 4 nitrogens in it. That in turn _sounds_ like it's unstable, but a tetrazolide anion is stabilized by being able to distribute the negative charge over the entire ring, which also makes tetrazoles behave as unusually strong acids.

I honestly love the way chemical substances change into nice colours. Like for example, the remains at 2:25 turn a really nice pink/magenta when water comes into contact with it. Man, i love chemistry.
Manganese is great for this. Make a dilute pale purple solution of permanganate and raise the pH with some alkali (not carbonate). Add some glucose or fructose as a reducing agent and watch the colour changes.

@@naturegirl1999 it's used to dye wood. It's good because it's very colorfast and vibrant, but still pretty cheap and easy to use. It comes in a lot of colors but I think looks best in the red to yellow spectrum.
