  • A recap of my 2021 summer fly fishing across Colorado for brown, brook, and huge cutthroat trout. From the elk in Rocky Mountain National Park to small streams just outside of Denver, Colorado is one of the most beautiful states to fly fish. On this trip, I caught my biggest fish ever and my first cutthroat trout while stillwater fly fishing! We hiked several miles to this remote alpine lake to discover massive cutthroat trout patrolling the edges. What a blast! #flyfishing #outdoors #fishing

    I don't miss much about the US, but I do miss the Rocky Mountains and fishing alpine lakes in Colorado for cutthroat trout. Nice release!

    Longtime CO fly fisherman. Hard to watch how long that old guy was held out of the water, mainly due to the small net brought to an alpine lake… and how it swam sideways along the rocks at the very end of your edit after the release, suggesting that it wasn’t rehabbed long enough before the release. Please consider my comments on your next big fish… especially our prized alpine cutts.

      I was thinking the same thing...hard to imagine someone catching a nice cutt like that and then not taking a few extra seconds to "revive" it....gettin the fish back quickly and safely aren't necessarily the same thing. As seemed to be the case here, unfortunately

      This apline lake was outside of RMNP, but it's on the way there from Denver. It doesn't hold many trout. From what I could tell, there were 2 smaller cutthroat trailing behind this one -- but that was it.

    Awesome vid! What tippet and flies were you throwing?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  9 месяцев назад

      So I was using a 5x tippet for the dry flies and droppers. Most of the fish I caught on a Adams Parachute or small Chubby Chernobyl. That cutthroat was on a size #20 Rainbow Warrior Midge -- 5x tippet. But my leader was around 12 feet in length.

    I am coming to Colorado this summer to Breckenridge. Found this channel to look for some tips and what the fishing is like. Do all the alpine lakes hold trout?

    • @connorpierce4467
      @connorpierce4467 Год назад +1

      Not all alpine lakes are able to support a permanent population of fish, sometimes you end up putting in the work to hike somewhere and find a barren lake, but that's part of it all!

    • @tobiasgilman6311
      @tobiasgilman6311 Год назад

      @@connorpierce4467hey do you live near those type of lakes just wanted to know the conditions of the area if it’s snowy muddy or whatever

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  9 месяцев назад

      @@tobiasgilman6311 most apline lakes will be clear of snow and mud by late July and August. The higher you go the longer it all sticks around. It truly does dampen the trip when you go in early summer and hit the floods of water that come off the ice packs.

    A true rare monster sized cutt! Nice work! What fly did you catch it on?

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  2 года назад +1

      Size #20 Rainbow Warrior Midge is what fooled it. I had it dropped 48-inches below a size #12 Adams Parachute with a size #18 Zebra Midge in-between.

    Is this in the RMNP? If not no need to disclose nothing - looked like a shot of the moraine valley in the opening screen - and then you mentioned the elk gate, which is also present in the moraine valley. It’s incredible fishing and bugling in September!

    • @theflycrate
      @theflycrate  2 года назад +1

      You are correct! There's lots of good fishing in the valley, which is where that was filmed.

    Why do you need a net for a 4" trout. I stopped using a net many years age because I realized. If a fish was so big I needed a net, it was too big for the net and I don't want to carry a huge net on my back. I use a Cetchem Release tool and rarely touch a fish.
