For better or for worse (and I definitely feel it is for the worse), this is the basic format of the show. Either the host or her producer has decided to format the show as a 100% clueless host asking extremely basic questions as though they have no grasp on news or current events. I think this is on the assumption that it either makes it more approachable or better at naturally teasing out basic facts, but traditional interview styles can do the same thing (and in a much less condescending manner).
