I love that Chris Cornell and Buckley were buddies cuz they are by far the two best vocalists of the past two decades.

@@jack-uv6mt what you mean is they went higher than Layne. Dont confuse range with tonal quality cause Layne had a voice no one has ever had.

@@ritwikb401 Yes, I know what you mean. He had an extremely unique voice (although Buckley had an odd voice as well) Vocal range also isn't just high but low too, If I were to compare actual vocal ranges i'd have to look up each one of their ranges. I think Buckley would actually win that fight.
Layne having a voice no one else had doesn't factor into who had the best voice technically. Although I think I'd agree layne staley had the most unique voice, and prob my personal favorite. Also worth mentioning layne also had a rly amazing range (love hate love, man in the box comes to mind immediately)
Overall I'm not a singer i'm not rly qualified to comment on who had the best voice/range

You know, you get all these rock stars that can scream their asses off, you get the crooners, you get the angst-filled grungers, you get the awesome punk rockers, but something about Jeff Buckley is just untouchable. He doesn't fit into any of those categories. His voice is just something else, and I desperately want to tribute him by writing about how unique and beautiful and heart-touching and evocative his voice is by writing some descriptive tribute that is so damn poetic, but I'm afraid no one can define just what it is that made him so special. I just can't put it into words. He reminds me of 'Vincent', Don Mclean about van Gogh, the line 'this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.' And now I've gotten that song stuck in my head and my heart is breaking all over again.

yeah, it's incredible. it's like his music is a genre of its own. of course there's the clear element of rock, but like they were saying, his choice of notes really creates something so far beyond any other sounds.

Dude, I myself for the longest time have procrastinated to do something creative regarding think pieces, or rather visual media of the form about my favorite artists and music/art in general, and I too have felt that there is a Need of bringing more attention to Jeff, because what he did was something absolutely otherwordly, and I would go as far as calling him an anomaly of unbelievable, genuine self expression while making it sound almost anew every time, and just taking you on an audio journey rarely heard... I dont know if that last statement made absolute sense, but I just cried after that, at first deceptively fake feeling, montage of Jeffs friends reading the lyrics to Grace for the first time in, I dont even remember how many years have past since my last Actual cry, so yeah - Jeffs ability to amaze is something Actually worth spreading.

jeff buckley and layne staley was the voices of 90s like freddie and robert of 70s.
jeff was the light side of this and layne was the dark side.
of course jeff had many troubles and bad things but comparing to layne, his voice and songs usually brings people relaxing or melancholy. however layne sang like an angry angel like tells you a sad story with screaming his pains. i love them both and they are in my top 5 and one of my favourites.

"This guy would have been an utter legend"? He IS a legend, dear. He was on his way to becoming a legend the first time he opened his mouth to sing and the first time he picked up a guitar, and he sure as hell had earned "legend" status by the time he died. Sad and heartwrenching? Yes. A waste? Hell no.

I've thought about it over and over and I don't think this was a suicide, but all the same I don't think he fought to survive this. I don't think he cared whether he lived or died, as long as this was what he was doing and he made the music and he was remembered for it. It's still ironic, the words he used in Grace. "And I feel them drown my name" Drown. He drowned. Hmm...

have you ever choked on a piece of meat before? Drowning is a lot like it, its youd bodys NATURAL response to BREATHE , take a next breath, whether you want to or not! I HATED MY LIFE, HATED MY ABUSIVE boyfriend, I had bronchitis, we were eating steak, I coughed and my body went to take a breath between coughs and it sucked the meat down the wrong pipe! There I was with him, I couldnt swallow it, cough it up nothing it was stuck...he kept asking if it was stuck ....I kept shaking my head no, then after awhile, he said Yes it is! He gave me the heimlick (sp) I hate fibromyalgia, the first thing to go in my memory was spelling! but I think you got what I mean, the piece of steak came out, and he just started running his mouth AGAIN, I got sick, had to go for an xray, the next day bc like when you get water in your lungs..the same as if you choke on food, xray your lungs to make sure you dont get particles of food or debris from water in your lungs which can lead to really bad infections and also kill you! So besides jumping off bridges and knocking yourself out "on purpose" I cant imagine him being happy , so happy going for a swim fully clothed, boots and all, howd he drown himself on purpose! That's so silly to even remark about! I might be, no I probably am extra sensative regarding suicides bc Ive had 2 ex boyfriends and 2 guys I dated for a few months or weeks , all very good friends still and one of their little brothers commit suicide! I dont find it amusing AT ALL!

@awishedforsong no problem! Its very surreal when a comment you made well over a year ago gets a response. This was when I was going through a tough time in my life and went back to listening to Jeff to soothe my soul (as I have done before). I still stand by the comment though I will say there is good music out there, you just wont find it in the "top 40". Thanks for your comment :)

We can all interpret JB lyrics as some cryptic message, tbh he didn't have a death wish..people cling on to metaphor and meaning when there is none..he lived his time..he died sadly and we should all cherish what he left behind..I'm sure he would have laughed at the eulogies and the nonsense hagiography that some make of him and his work...

I don't know if this makes me a prick or not but it truly pisses me off that we lose a visionary like this as well as Shannon Hoon and Joe Strummer so young but people like Michael Bolton and Mark McGrath and Bobby Brown continue to draw a breath.

@jdidnoid Unsuccessful? I think his Grace has served it's purpose many times, in the hearts of those who feel it's impact in their own lives.
