Oh man, THANK YOU! I was going to get that Ultra Pro Cub3. Seriously. Thank you so much. Looks like I'm going to have to contact Aaron Cain now. This video was incredibly useful, as always, thank you for your content.
Tolarian Community College Ha! My Cube is nothing special. I've kept it in Multiverse Gift Boxes for the last 10 years or so. It's a pain to find another one of those lying around after the previous one has ended its run. I've gone through 3 already. The US/CAD exchange rate is killing me right now though. It has priced a lot of Canadians out of buying sealed product already. In fact, there is actually a shortage of Atarka's Command's because nobody is opening product around here. However, this is a topic for another day entirely.
Milo: The Gathering Check out Broken Token too, their artist cases are very nice and for a little extra you can get a custom engraving on the front. Very happy with mine.
I literally don't buy anything unless this guy's done a video on it. In a hobby like mtg where you can easily drop a few k on a serious collection, I am so SO thankful we have a resource like this online to give us a heads up on the best/worst accessories out there.
What a pathetic joke most "premium" products have turned into. More expensive, and less quality? Ultimate Guard is perfect for what the use is for and it's very budget-friendly. These other boxes look pretty but they serve no function that is worth the cost they hold. 70 dollars for a cardboard box with limited protection and no portability? That is embarrassing. Those Aaron Cain boxes are excellent, though, that goes without saying.
Once again, this video was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for always making some of the most helpful mtg content on RUclips with consistent quality.
I actually got an aluminum suitcase designed for trading card storage for my cube. I think it retailed around $40-45ish, but the guy I bought it from sold it to me for $30. It's robust, it's sleek, and it's a cinch for transport, since, you know, it's a suitcase. Also, it makes me feel like Seto Kaiba, so that's an added bonus. I don't have the link on hand at the moment, but I'll edit with a link once I find it. It's a great deal for a nice-looking storage option.
Peyton Swartzell No update on that link. Turns out that case was essentially a Kakapopo case the Prof reviewed later. It hasn’t fared the best over the years, but it’s still functional. I’ve since switched my cube over to a similar case I found at Goodwill that has a shoulder strap. Not sure who manufactures it, but it’s a similar construction to the Kakapopo cases.
Wizard foundry recently came out with a 3rd version of their grimoire. It had a latch, different color and I believe is actually made with leather. It'd be cool to see a video revisiting some of the products you didn't cover as I know there are several more products that are made to store cubes.
I'm not sure if you saw the comment about reviewing the CUB3 I made a few months ago,, but I'm glad that you eventually got around to it. Thanks for your dedication to providing objective product reviews to the community!
Ah! I'm so happy this series is still going!! I watched all of them when there were only 5. I came back to watch a review of my deck box that I love and I see all these new ones!
That Wooden Suitcase Blew me away, its simply Beautiful. I Play EDH and have 4 Decks, and i use a BCW 660/800 Cardboard case, mainly because for cardboard its strong, its white so i can customize it, and its super cheap (0.75) so i can buy in bulk and never worry about breaking one.
Thank you professor for your outstanding work reviewing deck boxes and sleeves it has saved me time and money not getting a bad product in the first place.
Never had I been more thankful for your comprehensive MTG product & accessories reveiws than this one Professor. These Cube box series of products unlike most other MTG card products comes at a significantly high price. Had I made a poor investment with sleeves or a deck box I'd be out only a couple of bucks, and I would have been mildly irritated but justified. Had I purchased a +$70 cube box and it been really shoddy make or construction (The insulting UltraPro cube box or the Grimoire box I see advertised on Facebook) I would have been really mad! I would have genuinely felt cheated of my money, and one of those companies is Ultrapro! Thank you for this.
Had an A. Cain multideck box built in exotic wood. It's a work of art. Not saying anyone really needs to have one, but I decided I wanted an awesome home for my pauper cube. Ironic that the deck box is worth more than double what the cards are worth, including tokens and basic lands. Fits about 700 sleeved cards.
Does the inside of the Aaron Cain box smell like like rich wood?? Because honestly. I'll just ship them my wallet to build me one if that's the case. It's so beautiful! I'm looking to replace my old King Cheetah multiverse box that holds all my decks, dice, lands etc. This looks be to an absolute gem. Thanks Professor!
Tolarian Community College You missed out on the KMC Card Box 1000! It's sold only in Japan but can be shipped to the US via Amazon for around $16. It's simple and sturdy and I love it. You should definitely check it out!
Hey Professor! I think a video about a Cube would be in order! What is a cube? What kind of fun can we expect from it? How much should we expect to spend? How should we go about building it? Thanks, prof!
I watch your videos all the time. And thank you for showing me the Aaron Cain product. I'm a carpenter and I'll be making myself afew of them in the near future.
So I have an Aaron Cain Deck box (made for 5 60 card and 1 EDH deck) and after a year or so of use, I have cracks on the box near where the lid first slides in (and on both sides). I take very good care of the box, but given time, any kind of off angle entry or removal has the chance to cause this kind of dmg. If you are able to push and pull the lid out straight and parallel every time, it'll last forever. For now, I have retired this deck box while I try to "glue the wood" back together. I would like to note the side by side "mini-fatpack" box I also ordered from him has worked great and I have no complaints. The only let down has been the deck box itself.
Tolarian Community College Thank you. I have seen 3 other channels I watch review the Wizarding Foundry Grimor (I assume they sent one to a bunch of the major youtube MTG personalities) and when they reviewed it they were quite positive which seem suspect because of the lid and the lack of a latch. I appreciate the honesty and thoroughness of each of your reviews. Thank you so much.
I'm a little late, but my favorite card case for storing a large number of cards is the "Plano Jammers 5305 Card Storage Box" i couldn't find them in production anymore, however they can be found on Ebay and Amazon for $10-15 US with free shipping even. Now it's definitely nothing fancy, but it; is plastic therefore semi water resistant and otherwise durable has a latch which holds it closed very well holds 1100 sleeved cards (more than any other box reviewed here) holds deck boxes too (just not very efficiently on space) easily fits in a backpack and is less costly than any of these other options. I had one similar (same brand but it held 2000 cards) that I took to the "Future Sight" Prerelease and used daily until last year (7 years of continuous use) when it was stolen, still in perfect condition. I sincerely believe it is one of the best card cases out there.
I quite like that plug for local stores at the end. I am trying to set up to start a MTG store in my town, the closest one is 45 mins away and isn't that good for MTG, so a friend and I are trying to get a working store set up.
I use the KMC 1000 Card storage container for my cube. It holds my 360 cube + lands + dice + sleeved tokens all quite well... I heard that they're not being made anymore and pricy in some stores online, but I got mine from a retailer on Amazon for 7.99 (USD) from Japan. Case clasps closed and fits in a bag nicely. Sorry no link, on phone.
Not to dredge the comments section 3 years old, but Grimiore has updated their design for their deck boxes since this video has been put out to include a latch, metal bands on the corner to protect from damage, as well as to have an option to buy an adjustable organizer insert so cards fit better and can be organized easier. I use the Grimiore now for my cube and it works splendidly, I have no complaints.
On 3/31/15, I wrote to Wizardry Foundry and asked them the following: "I noticed that the product description of the Grimoire 3rd Edition states it is made from "engineered wood and bonded leather for strong sturdy design." I would like to know which parts of the box are actually made from bonded leather." A representative named Paula wrote back with the following response: "The whole box is engineered wood and the cover is wrapped in bonded leather. Hope this answer your question. Best Regards, Paula." Rather disturbing that the company would actually lie when asked what their product is made of. Thanks for the accurate review, professor--it saved me from falling prey to this deceptive marketing strategy.
I think a good budget option are the BCW cardboard boxes, (we use the long one for 800 cards). It cost only about 2 € and of course its not comparable to a handcrafted wood box, but as long as you don't play in the rain with it, and treat it usual your cards should be fine and it doesnt open that easy unintentional. Also if drop it or something you can replace it really easy.
Professor, as a fairly new MTG player who you have convinced to double sleeve his cards I am purchasing a cube and I was wondering how many double sleeved cards the Stack n' Safe can hold until I can afford an Aaron Cain box. Thank you a ton for your videos!
i have two friends who have a cube and both of them just use the holiday gift box to store them in. it holds a ton of cards and seems to hold up pretty good.
Thanks a lot, you just saved me from buying the Ultra Pro one. After finding out the Kaalia tower was cardboard I held off on getting a cube as I was afraid it would be the same. I'd never thought about a wooden box, great idea :D
Glad to see the issues I had with the Cub3 were the same as you. Pity you didn't cover the Cube Vault, since it is the #1 method to carry a cube. Great video!
MrLuBuFu Yeah, it's funny, I've had half a dozen people now recommend it to me. I'd never even heard of it before today! Guess I need to check it out for the next video!
I have the Cube Vault, and it is legit. The one downside I can think of with it is, it's pretty heavy. Empty, it weighs about 10 pounds, but your cards will be protected to the fullest.
i do understand the grimoire is not for everyone, but i love mine.i use a gym bag in place of a normal backpack so i not as worried about room and removing mine so far it never open when i didn't want it to and i have it since day 1 (i was part of the kickstarter)
It seems that the grimoire could be classed up a bit by them adding a ribbon as a cheap and elegant way of fastening the book. It is sad that they missed that opportunity. Of course I very much looked forward to and appreciated the Aaron Caine box, it is absolutely beautiful. As a man who has traveled to many nations and has a family heritage of woodworking hobbyists I will say that Aaron's work is absolutely stunning. I look forward to speaking with him sometime about a commander box and a sort of brief case box for my deck boxes. I feel like walking around with a beautiful work of art such as that really adds class to the player. It shows investment and care. Thank you again for a great video and being an inspiration into getting me back into magic. Something which has really helped my life in a time of need.
ryan paul The Grimoire Alpha (what TCC has) and Beta both have an option to come with a leather strap, and the 3rd Edition Grimoire has a latch.I don't know why he didn't say any of that, instead referring to the Kickstarter for a completely different one.
The Grimoire is simply a mass produced "home accent" box that you can get at Ross or Hobby Lobby for $8. By that I mean they are EXACTLY the same thing, except Wizardy Foundry ordered it with their own design printed on the outside, and added the middle divider themselves.
King holy crap I was scrolling through the comments and I saw this. The Shiny Squirturtle Gamer was my old account has sadly been deleted by accident.!
This video came in JUST in time. I've recently assembled enough cards to make a conspiracy based cube, and I only just realised I had no way of storing it.
Thanks for the tip now I know what deck boxes to buy and my uncle is going to build a deck box for my magic the gathering cards and it's going to have the sliding lid just like the ones you have
I've had my Aaron Cain box for about a month at this point and can't say enough good things about it. Mine is actually the small dark wood box seen in the bottom left at 11:38 in the video. I take this with me to any Magic event I attend and keep four decks (commander, pauper, standard and modern) in it. It is incredibly convenient to have any deck I need with me and I never have to worry about finding cards all over in the bottom of my bag. I actually liked the box so much that I've also ordered a matching 100 card side loading deck box to bring to events where I know I won't need all these different decks or space may be tight. I can't thank this channel enough for introducing me to these boxes and Aaron Cain for making such a quality product.
It occurs to me that the main issue with the Ultimate Guard plastic boxes (aside from the risk of the plastic breaking) can be easily solved with a few rubber bands, making the closing mechanisms on the Cub3 and the Grimoire extra ridiculous in comparison.
Yeah, so after I complete my cube, Aaron Cain is getting a customer. Those boxes look absolutely beautiful. As for the Cub3, they sold so badly at the lgs that they have started giving one out at each large tournament as a door prize. I think people caught on. ;)
I don't know if you included the Ultimate Guard Box of my request on one of the more recent videos or if it is a coincidence, but thanks for reviewinv it. And I do share your opinions, but I am a bit more positive to it. Because the Dragonshield box with 4 compartments broke twice because the lid was too sturdy tucked on. Something that did not happen with the ultimate guard box once.
Seven Years later, i wonna build a cube with the new DnD set Baldurs Gate and i was in my LGS looking at that Ultra Pro Cub3 and right next to it, The Lair with the Professors Logo on it. An A+, who had thought this day will come. And today im happy i see this Video, because it help me. Im not gonna buy the Cub3, even they had half the prise to 40.- !
If you have 175 to spare and are looking for the best cube protection, I cannot recommend highly enough the CubeVault. I'm sure had the professor included it he would've given it at least an A (taking off points for the felt on the sides coming undone at times, but that is easily fixed).
NINETY F'ING DOLLARS!? Has Ultra Pro lost their bloody minds!? They're like the Hewlett Packard of M:tG products, riding a well known name while making overpriced crap! That is EXACTLY why your videos are such an awesome service to M:tG players! Thanks for sacrificing your hard earned cash so we don't have to! I like those Ultimate Guard boxes. As my collection gets filtered down smaller and smaller into just Modern and Eternal cards, lugging these holiday gift boxes around is becoming a pain in the arse. Those are awesome for the price. Are those little pips in the corners to secure a stack of them?
I agree! If we could just, get the box in our opening hand, we wouldn't have to tap our wallets, pay an arm and a leg, and continue searching for a good box, there wouldn't be any competition in the storage/deckbox industry.
Since you aren't opposed to the plastic boxes you might be interested in the one I mentioned in my comment, the "Plano Jammers 5305 Card Storage Box". link to my comment - ruclips.net/video/uciXA2tQ-Gw/видео.html&google_comment_id=z121fj4osxntd1l5504ccz0gvoildt0bk5o
I still prefer to use the white cardboard boxes with the cheap ultra pro deckboxes inside to hold the tokens + lands in the other box, but thats my choice. I really prefer something that doesn't add to the cube's weight when I transport
I think the Grimoire is kinda cool as a decorative piece for keeping at home and keeping your deck boxes in. However, I don't believe I could rationalise its purchase at that price.
Another TCC video My day is now complete, thank you for another great video Tolarian. Edit:What is cube I am starting to hear more and more about cube but I don't know what it is, any one willing to explain it to me please?
Ok, I am still a little unsure when you say prebuilt pool I get the packs part but am I right in assuming you mean I pick say 1000 cards from cards I own then find someone else with a Cube and then build a 60 card deck from these cards and play?
Azreal Dragon Are you familiar with booster drafts? Normally, people will draft with three sealed packs of current set(s), but in a Cube draft, you build the boosters by taking random chunks of cards out of the "cube" or box of cards 15 at a time and using them as packs. Other than that, it's exactly the same as a booster draft -- you start with three packs each, you pass them around the same way, build 40-card decks, and so on. The reason you'd build a Cube is to allow you to draft whatever you want, instead of being limited to, say, only using Dragons of Tarkir and Fate Reforged cards. You can make a cube out of anything -- random commons, bulk rares, cards that cost one-mana only, only blue cards -- but the most common Cube is probably one made out of several hundred of the best cards of all time. People enjoy booster drafts where every single card is amazing.
ArmadilloAl ok, thanks. Not really about the draft part I've only played Booster draft once and did very poorly xD But that makes more sense. I, myself would learn better if I watched someone play it but thank you for trying to explain it to me.
I just LOVE your Videos :D You spent actually Time for even such little Details, its Amazing! Compares and Infos i never get from others. Thanks :) Love your Work. Thumbs up!!! best Regards from Germany
I may save ans buy a grimoire for deck box storage later on. That way when i head out i can grab a deck or 2 and go. Althogh for now im happy with my lime green satin tower XD. I also have flourscent yellow sleeves, im considered the most obnoxious player at my strategy club (a title recently solidified when i started playing soul sisters)
'Ah my cards!!' Professor is THE best.
Agreed

Milo! I need an expert on cube like you and I have a question it is, can my cube have 1056 cards?
am i the only one who loves these videos so much ill go back and re watch them multiple times a day?
Mother of God why can every reviewer be as thorough! Brilliance! Thanks prof! Dynamite channel.

I wanna see another budget deck. PLEASE :) LOVE to see your reasonings
I have a Grimoire from wizardry foundry. They updated the lock mechanism that has a nice latch. And the design is nice on the one i have
My cube is exactly 480 cards! I'm very happy about the first box. One could just puts bands on it to keep it from accidentally opening.
It seems that the grimoire could be classed up a bit by them adding a ribbon as a cheap and elegant way of fastening the book. It is sad that they missed that opportunity.
Neato, thanks for the info. I will have a look at those options
2:41 The Professor putting his cards in danger in order to better inform us! What a guy.
Thanks for doing the CUBE!
It seemed way to pricey to take a risk on with out more reserch.
The Grimoire is simply a mass produced "home accent" box that you can get at Ross or Hobby Lobby for $8. By that I mean they are EXACTLY the same thing, except Wizardy Foundry ordered it with their own design printed on the outside, and added the middle divider themselves.
Cool thanks teach! That grimoire gives me a diy idea for my cube's storage
Thanks! This video persuaded me to make my own deck box.. I'll look up materials whatever nature provides me..
Have you made your own deck from rocks, sticks and leaves yet?
The future: 3D printing
My friend got that Grimoire box as a gift, he still uses it, but with belt over it to secure it. :D
Even more proof that Magic Guard is a Magic Player's best friend (unless you want to go for super expensive custom stuff)
***** Same thing
King holy crap I was scrolling through the comments and I saw this. The Shiny Squirturtle Gamer was my old account has sadly been deleted by accident.!
This video came in JUST in time. I've recently assembled enough cards to make a conspiracy based cube, and I only just realised I had no way of storing it.
How was I not subscribed sooner! (even though I don't have a cube.... FANTASTIC overview of the products!)
Thank you for wasting your money so we don't have to! Love your content and appreciate you spending your little free time in teaching us Professor!
I can't thank this channel enough for introducing me to these boxes and Aaron Cain for making such a quality product.
i have to say you are very fair and have seen you only fail like 2 or 3 boxes so far you do an incredible job
Could you please make a video explaining what cubes are? I've heard a lot about them and have a slight idea but I'm not entirely sure what they are
was thinking of getting the pro cub3 but not anymore thank you for doing the review i appreciate it
$80 for a cardboard box? I'd craft my own using spare wood and buy cards instead.
nice reviews, professor, love your vids.
Thanks professor! I'm looking forward to building my own cube.
Bonded leather is a pretty common advertising term that typically means exactly what was used.
I think people caught on. ;)
I'd love one of them Aaron Cain boxes. Very nice indeed.
Check out the Broken Token's artist boxes for your next video too! Very happy with mine, about the same price as the other custom boxes.
The ultimate Guard stackNsave is oriented for home storage. You need a large deck box, not a cube deck box, to bring to a tournament or card trade.
Im not gonna buy the Cub3, even they had half the prise to 40.- !
the best option for a cube is a simple bcw box that cost like 1 or 2 dollars
For the CUB3, do you think it is possible to glue or staple some straps to it and use the CUB3 as a backpack?
If you have 175 to spare and are looking for the best cube protection, I cannot recommend highly enough the CubeVault. I'm sure had the professor included it he would've given it at least an A (taking off points for the felt on the sides coming undone at times, but that is easily fixed).
just ordered my two stack and safe containers, thanks prof :)
Firevine They'll keep selling it as long as people keep buying it.

Love these videos they are really thorough so i can save my money and buy mtg items that are worth my money
Alright, I went with buying the Aaron Cain boxes. I just wish he was able to make mine.. by tommorow haha.
I still prefer to use the white cardboard boxes with the cheap ultra pro deckboxes inside to hold the tokens + lands in the other box, but thats my choice. I really prefer something that doesn't add to the cube's weight when I transport
You can buy those secret storage books on Amazon and eBay for £20 or less. The only difference is the felt lining and the faux leather.
I keep my cube in 2 deck builders tool kit boxes, they do the job just fine and were super cheap
I think the Grimoire is kinda cool as a decorative piece for keeping at home and keeping your deck boxes in. However, I don't believe I could rationalise its purchase at that price.
wew you really like that wooden box dont you. if i didnt know better i would have thought this was a late night ad for them.
Great video! You should make another Standard RDW with the new cards from DTK!
Might have to buy an Aaron Cain box.
I believe the shadows over innistrad gift box would be excellent for a cube
Oh good! I've been wondering about the Grimoire.
I would love to see a metal deck box with like a felt or silk lining etc
Great review. Thorough and informative as always.
Another TCC video My day is now complete, thank you for another great video Tolarian.
Edit:What is cube I am starting to hear more and more about cube but I don't know what it is, any one willing to explain it to me please?
Cube is a draft format where you draft from a prebuilt pool of cards instead of packs.
ArmadilloAl
ok, thanks.
Not really about the draft part I've only played Booster draft once and did very poorly xD
But that makes more sense.
I, myself would learn better if I watched someone play it but thank you for trying to explain it to me.
Love the "good product" music theme.
I was laughing so hard at 2:42 at the change of pitch of your voice when you said ”Ah!! My Cards!"
Cain does some amazing work I'm saving up for an ebony...anything lol
Do a video about what cubes are and how they work
Awesome video once again. wish I had a local game store though.
