Facebook is long gone. Years ago. Yesterday I dropped WhatsApp for signal, and convinced 6 family members to come with. Screw Facebook and WhatsApp
many people I know are bailing also - it is simply stupendous - telegram and Signal are gaining 10s millions of users a DAY. People are dropping Google search for DuckDuckGo etc...this is a revolution/revolt against big tech. It is nothing to do with Trump - people are sick of Big Tech's unaccountable power and arrogance.

Exactly! I've been slowly degooglelizing (if dats a word 😂) myself for weeks now! I use duckduckgo instead of chrome, i use hotmail instead of gmail nd i disabled all permissions for all google services on my device... D next step is to buy a phone dat doesn't have google services built in out d box....
The reason for such drastic move is an experience I had a few weeks back... I was doing some fiddling on my phone when i stumbled into my account nd i swear i had never been dat shocked in my life! All my web activities from as far back as 2015 was being saved! Note that between 2015 nd now i've changed devices about 6 times nd even d websites i visited then nd forgotten about were all literally logged in to my google profile! And my comments, all my liked videos... There were just so much i can't say everything here.
I deleted my instagram acc two years ago. and now deleted my whatsapp acc, and let me tell u something: GOOD RIDDANCE !

Let's not ignore Vimeo, a platform that it's intentions from the first moments of its birth was to promote actual professional, unique and artistic content. The amount of pure human expression you can find there is beyond your imagination. The "Staff Picks" section features every now and then very interesting film projects you typically don't see too often on RUclips. You have to dig very deep to find original content on this platform and thus lose your time doing so.

Before Covid I was traveling and living in Africa and Kingston, Jamaica and everyone there uses WhatsApp as their main way to communicate. Facebook, Instagram are the main ways for most people to see the work that I'm doing in these poor communities. Its the main way I connect. I understand the security issues, but when you travel overseas, they are a lifeline. I do have Signal as well, but regardless of these security issues, they have been a lifeline for me.

I'm also moving away from all Google services too such as G Drive and G Mail. I want to move way from RUclips too but it's the only way I get the news! The hard part is convincing people who don't care about privacy to switch too... When everyone around you (here, at least) is using WhatsApp, it feels weird to say you don't use it. Rather, you're using an app they've never heard of...

How do we get out of it completely? Great question! Let me give this one some thought.
Practically it's impossible due to amount of data and databases architecture. It's cost less to you to keep all this data than deleting
You could delete everything but facebook will keep a copy forever anyway. Just delete your accounts so no new messages are sent.
Signal is fantastic. I've been looking into Minds for social media and it seems great for privacy.
I dropped Facebook (Messenger Included), Instagram, and Whatsapp a couple of years ago and I'm so happy with my decision! Started using Signal a year back and I feel my privacy is back:)
That's the same thing WhatsApp said when they started and for now that's all fine and good, till signal sell to facebook and the story starts again.
Thankfully, Signal cannot sell to anyone given it's a non profit. That being said, feel you. We have to keep and eye on the project and, some day, we will have to move once more.
Just installed signal on my iPad and pc after using on my iPhone for a few weeks, and nothing synced, missing parts of groups threads, missing private messages, I have one hot mess any idea of how to fix this issue and have everything sync correctly?
Since signal is non-profit. How do you think it is going to cover the cost of the bandwidth? Someone has to come up with the money.

@@finefranky Doesn't matter if their servers get compromised since their client is open source and audited to encrypt everything before sending it on the internet, they will not be able to cheat. But yes for that you will have to at least once meet your friends and ensure that three shared id is the same.

Here in Brazil i have signal to talk to my mother, telegram for some groups, and to talk with a few more people and whatsapp to talk to the rest of my family and other people. But I'm going to uninstall whatsapp, it might be tough in the beginning, but if enough people leave whatsapp, more companies will stop forcing people to use whatsapp for customer service. It's like now you're forced to use whatsapp, too many people use it for important stuff, I worked in the Brazilian ellection and we used whatsapp to communicate. This needs to end.

What's really complicated about this is adoption. I would like to switch, in fact I had many alternatives already installed n my devices before this policy, but unfortunately if the people you talk to don't switch it means you are just out of the loop with your friends. In my country whatsapp is a really big and VERY frequently used, even some companies and some government services have whatsapp lines. Many people will message you over whatsapp if they have your number just by instinct. A big portion of society need to drop it for this to be a permanent solution.
This really sucks. Getting people to adopt a new platform is super hard. All my college groups are on WhatsApp and we can’t do anything about it :/
And that’s the problem I just wanted to point out. We need an actual solution on how to move the masses to Signal or other apps from WhatsApp. Just explaining the privacy issues won’t do the trick because people prefer to be comfortable.
I have the same issue, I'm using Signal already for my text messages but I just can't drop Whatsapp because of my contacts that are using it. Also, if I would drop Facebook and Whatsapp, there would be no way for me to talk to my parents who are on the other side of the world than I am. So unfortunately, no dropping for me.
Make it a trend or get the cancel culture society people.

Yes, the network effect is definitely present. But if we don't switch now, then we might not get another opportunity when so many people are switching.
The way I've asked people to migrate groups is to create the group (with 1 or 2 people) in the new platform and share its link in the WhatsApp group. All my family members (who are tech noobs) have switched to the new group. This way it is easier for them to join the new groups.
Telegram for me. I've never touched Facebook for years since it was just full of idiots and ads. As for WhatsApp, I've always hated it. Especially when you habe things like telegram. I've even stopped Instagram since 2011

I was about to sign up for Signal and on sign up they ask for access to your contacts list and media.
This means they can track you through contact list mapping and WiFi and Bluetooth triangulation.
So why use Signal if you can be tracked?

Just deny the request. Signal doesn't upload your contacts anyway, but better to be safe than sorry, correct?
You can still use Signal by typing / pasting the number of the person you want to contact.
I think the media permission is for choosing a profile image. But even profiles are encrypted and only people you message have the key to view that. It is also optional, as I recall.
I'm from Portugal and i face the same problem like others commenting here: it's EXTREMELY difficult to make people drop off WhatsApp and join Signal (or even Telegram; don't know which one is better).
Now, it seems that Facebook/WhatsApp said is that this new privacy policy won't affect the Europeans due to the GDPR but the truth is that i already received the notification about the new privacy policy several times with the options "Accept" or "Not now"...
We all know that they do that because they know many people don't even read, don't care, or by accident they hit the "accept" option...
Due to GDPR, i don't believe they really care about it; if they can't go by one side, they try to go by other side.
I've been trying to convince people to change but unsuccessful. Like a friend said: "Some years ago i tried to convince people to migrate from WhatsApp to Telegram but at some point i gave up because no one has do it".
What a smart move from Whatsapp. If I am not mistaken they are trying to add a transaction feature on the app that will be super helpful to millions of users who are on WhatsApp. For that reason they are making minor changes to terms and conditions. They will collect basic user info to facilitate the feature since records need to be maintained as to who is sending money to whom. However the communication data still should remain encrypted.
What about Telegram? I downloaded 3 days ago and is awesome.... I disabled google and chrome too...now...DuckDuckGo

Hard to leave fb ecosystem when friends and family use it. Also, I'm a self-taught developer. I use fb groups to learn and collaborate. It has a mature groups system and can be easier to get feedback compared to other platforms. Agree with and understand what you're saying though.

I feel people put too much emphasis in privacy when they are getting something for free. Servers cost money, making the app cost money, keeping and updating the app cost money, eventually the creators will want to monetize the app and either you have to pay directly for it, or you would be sold as the product. Signal might be secure for now, but then you would have to move to telegram, and then to something else.
Maybe we are better off by paying for an app altogether, but most people wouldn't. Nothing is free. Also, Whatsappp has been doing this for a long time, this is not anything new, they only clarify things they were already doing with the latest update to the terms.

Never had FB (believe or not, it is possible), using a bit of Instagram, using whatsapp but i am about to drop it as soon as it's needed.
People should start to care about their privacy WAY more. And it is not just about using this or that app, but also understand that ONCE you post something public, it is on internet for eternity (if it is interesting enough.... it can be downloaded, re-posted, shared, etc.).
I always used Signal but other messaging apps that I can suggest are Skype, Telegram and Session, but Session is for mass privacy, it uses the same technologies as signal plus some extras for more privacy and security. I hope you like it 😊
Skype is completely closed source, Telegram chats by default aren't end to end encrypted, Session is the only other option apart from Signal.

The best and most secure way to share pics and comments, is iphone's private social media with shared albums via imessage or Google photo links. You just select the pics. you want to share and create a shared album that you can send to all of your friends. They can comment and even add their own pics to the albums. You can invite more people and unsubscribe people as well. If you've never tried it, do so because it really nice and private, well between you and your contacts.

WE need something LIKE facebook that you can have this privacy, have the games, the articles, etc.. I don't have a lot that I really wanna say to others as much as I just like being able to if I want, but mostly be able to read and respond to and talk about articles.
I deleted WhatsApp last week! Signal is way better, especially the desktop app that unlike WhatsApp, it allows you to call or video call anyone. Signal's encryption is the best, and it has such good reputation, that WhatsApp itself uses Signal's encryption protocol. FB Messenger "secret messages" also use Signal's protocol as well, and Google Messages beta also added signal's encryption protocol last month. Signal's the way to go.

I would quit Whatsapp and pretty much all Social Media only if it wasn't the only way to stay in touch with my family and friends, who don't give a fuck about privacy and use those all the time.

thankfully my mom's boomer friends have all panic-left whatsapp. I got her (mom) on signal. Hopefully she gets her friends on that as well

I already switched but I dont like how the Group Messages I send out have all the replies intersect with others in the group rather than replying to just the sender, Is there a way to fix that to where it works like the whats app broadcast feature?
