    By far the most clear explanation i have ever listened to on youtube about signal and its advantage...damn this guy deserves a sub! Also please do a comparison of whatsapp,telegram and signal since everyone claims the privacy steps taken by them is super good....for a normal user everything is a buttering, only few with a technology background will get to know whats happening behind!

    @Sun Knudsen The videos are great, thank you so much. I would like to make sure I got right what you say at 8:09 : the concept is that since communication is encrypted and you can know for sure who you are talking to, then the information security part (confidentiality, integrity, availability) of the game is relatively full proof. At this point the potential remaining threats are on the operation security side, for example someone can steal your phone and/or coerce you in providing phone access so that the messages can be read on the phone directly. So the threat moves from infoseq to opsec. Is that correct? Would it be correct to say that before signal installation you have both infoseq and opseq potential treats, the infoseq part is removed with signal and you are left with opseq only?

      Yes, spot on!
      > Would it be correct to say that before signal installation you have both infoseq and opseq potential treats, the infoseq part is removed with signal and you are left with opseq only?
      There is no silver bullet and depending on the use case, an appropriate answer would be significantly more nuanced. For instance, how secure is the OS? Have you disabled Bluetooth and Wi-Fi? ...

    Hey Sun, you mentioned that ephemeral data might be something to go for.
    The option you showed on Signal that makes messages disappear after a set amount of time only effects the data on my device though, right?
    But what about the service provider's servers? I guess Whatsapp/ iMessenger/... DO keep copies of my messages on their servers in encrypted form. But what about Signal?

    • @sunknudsen
      @sunknudsen  3 года назад +4

      Signal only keeps a copy of encrypted messages while they are in transit. Once delivered, they are deleted immediately from their servers.
      > The option you showed on Signal that makes messages disappear after a set amount of time only effects the data on my device though, right?
      Disappearing messages deletes messages on all devices of all members of a conversation.

    Technically it's not exacly correct, that encryption without support for PFS uses the same key to encrypt data over and over again. There are always new keys being generated for each session, but without PFS an attacker, who recorded the encrypted communication, can recreate each session key, if he gains access to e.g. the private key of a server.
    In TLS only DHE and ECDHE ciphersuites provide PFS.

    Everything is impossible until it has been done. I have both iMessage (which is my favourite) and unfortunately signal for them annoying Android users. WhatsApp are changing their privacy policies which I don’t want my details changed with 3rd parties. I personally think Law Enforcement are more interested in criminals than reading my messages to family, friends and my social life. With Law enforcement I really don’t care what messages they read of mine but I do so care about my cell network provider. If you’re not doing anything wrong you clearly have zero to worry about. If you are doing something wrong then I hope law enforcement come looking for you. I believe in law and order. 👮‍♀️❤️🙌🏻
