You pronunced it perfectly !😂 So glad that you are speaking at our event. Thanks for the patience 🧡
Thanks for the patience too. I would have dropped the project without the push. Humbled to be part of your event. 🤓
Looking forward to this event!
Would love to watch this - when is it?
We missed you, man!
Oh man it's been dark times but suddenly the SUN comes out! Good to see you again!
Definitively one of the most lovely comments so far. Thanks for the push!
I'm new to this channel so I'm guessing stepping out of Cloud is out of the question for most of you, but if you would: I recommend bluray disc burning. Where hard drives risk mechanical failure, discs do not. They hold 25/50/100 GB and the price per GB is roughly half of that of an HDD, let alone SSDs. They are never online unless inserted and connected, which is very secure and private, and before you mention it: no, they do not wither in sunlight. CD/DVD was made with organic dye plastics which are sensitive to ultraviolet light, which bluray isn't due to their inorganic dyes. They are slightly slower, I'll admit that, but you can easily burn a terabyte of data in a weekend and the read speed is 26 MB/s. And if it's just for backups, who cares how fast you can retrieve your old files? It's could storage anyway. I trust discs a lot more 20 years from now than hard drives even if I would never drop one (which makes me nervous even to think about). Discs can also never get infected since they are write-once, read-only after that point.
Hey, thanks for sharing… and good feedback. One tends to forget older supports that have outstanding durability… such as plain old archival paper.
Great video! Very informative.
Thanks for this video. Quite interesting. However, since you introduced the idea of encryption and deduplication. Encrypting files before they get sent to the cloud renders deduplication moot right? Let's make it simple, say you have a 10-byte file. You only changed 2 bytes. Only the 2 bytes will be stored on the server due to deduplication right? But encryption changes that. When you update a file even just one byte of it, the encrypted form is so much different from the original file's encrypted version. So how does that get deduplicated? Thanks!
Thanks for the vital information for the cloud services. Would you please talk about the reliability of the iCloud drive?
Hey Sun, really apreciate your content, do you have any thoughts about OneDrive and their "Private Vault" inside their cloud , is it secure ? Also I wanted to know if in the future you were planing to make more videos about Mac security; like "how to know if your Mac is hacked".
Thanks
Private vault is secure, but Microsoft can still access the data, so it’s not private. What it’s useful for is if someone hacks into your account, they won’t have the access code for the private vault.
Thanks for the video. I'm not tech savvy but would still like to try borg when your guide on it is released in the future :D
Instead of publishing the episode on Borg right away (which requires many fundamentals), I am planning on breaking it down in more manageable episodes. That should help less tech savvy people experiment with this stuff. 🤓
Refusing sponsorship for the content
Huge respect man!!
Great content! Really appreciate your videos. What are your thoughts on iCloud Drive for files? Would it be in the same camp at Google Drive and Dropbox? Thanks
Hello! After two years I can say it has improved with advanced protection. It encrypts iCloud backups on the server side and the user is the only one with the keys.
Thank's for your excellent lessons! I wish you had a lesson about safety comparing MacOS and Windows. Keep up the good work!
Hey Anders, thanks for the push. Unfortunately, I know very little about Windows.
@@sunknudsen Ok! It’s the same here :)
Great video! Thank you! 💛
Thx Sun for the content 👍🏻 so does it exist a secure online file transfer platform? Not for storage but just for transferring large size data between two persons which cannot be exchanged as E-Mail attachment.
Great topic for an episode… a synchronous option that I like is github.com/magic-wormhole/magic-wormhole.
Hi, glad that you are back, I have a question, currently i'm using google drive with rclone encryption, is this consider a safe method?
Yes, if you don't care about the metadata aspect.
Great question... I will answer it in next episode. Stay tuned!
I had a privacy question so do you think Dropbox and any other cloud services are able to see all of our photos uploaded on their cloud servers I hope you can answer my question I would appreciate it a lot

What about MEGA? Would you recommend it?
Love from India, sir! I really love your videos and also recommend my friends
Thanks for spreading the privacy guides. Love from Canada.
You are one smart girl
Good Video
lol i was waiting for this one for months
Thankyou!
Wht do u recommend as a cloud storage? All cloud services let you see your files from a browser
Love this video!
could you briefly speak on using Proton's vpn and drive? you're mail video convinced me to switch to Proton mail, and I'm just now seeing they have other services like these, too. Love the information you put out. Thanks.
Glad you are back handsome 🧡🧡🧡🧡
Mega cloud is my favourite cloud provider when it comes to end to end encryption.
Thanks for sharing... will have a look!
Hi, do you have Google's Web & App activity enabled which synchronises your phone and web searches/history across multiples devices?
Great question. I don't. I should talk about that in the next episode on the cloud. In a nutshell, I am not comfortable having Google software running on my Mac.
@@sunknudsen Ditto. If i can only get out of Google's ecosystem, i would have run away a long time ago. :>
That’s why is use Boxcryptor for my most sensitive files. Only a small subset of my files need end to end encryption, and Boxcryptor fits the bill perfectly for me. I’ve been using it for about 5 years and have been happy with it.
and then Dropbox acquired them....
@@plsreleasethekraken Yeah that was VERY disappointing. My 3Y Boxcryptor plan expires next year, but it’s a massive pain to look for a replacement.
I would say a private storage is inherently against convenient file sharing, but I also believe that these should be achieved by different tools.
Dude! Love your accent.
But when I encrypt my backup myself and upload that encrypted backup. This would be private and safe, or am I wrong?
Thanks for being honest
Are there any drawbacks/cons with using the same VPS to host storngSwan AND backups?
Great question... hosting both on the same server is less compartmentalized (therefore less secure) but more convenient given only one server has to be maintained. That setup is also more performant given backups are handled by the same server that terminates one's internet (resulting in less hops).
Awesome. One of those weekends I will do both in one server.
Thanks mate. Been liking/watching as many videos of yours as I can :)
What about using Dropbox to backup Veracrypt containers? Best of both worlds. Dropbox also supports block level transfer, so only the changes to the Veracrypt container are synced.
Great question... I favor choosing providers that are privacy-conscious. That being said, given the level of encryption of VeraCrypt, all good.
Good to see you Sun! Any chance you will be making a video on the Big Sur update from a security point of view?
Happy to be back! Great question... in a nutshell, I would wait before upgrading. That being said, I should publish content on the subject in the future as I explore the operating system and consider upgrading myself.
About your Ted talk (i hope you read this before)
My feedback for you:
# You are a likeable person, you have good charisma which makes it easy to listen to you.
# There is proof that you can speak in front of people (the “Why privacy matters” video).
And it turned out really good, you did it at least once and can do it again
# The way you improvise is your strength, if you loose yourself in the talk you will never be lost.
# Don’t forget that they reached out to you because they believe in you from what they have seen.
# Ask yourself if this experience will make you feel as a rich or a poor man, and I’m NOT talking about money.
# Say no and regret it for the rest of your life? Say yes and jump into an adventure you will remember the rest of your life.
# If you feel nervous…it’s a sign that you are normal, welcome to the human race :)
# If you feel scared and still do it, then you are brave.
Wow, your comment gave me shivers for at least 30 seconds and made my eyes wet. I am blessed you are part of my (our) journey. I will keep your words close to my heart so I can revisit them when I doubt myself. I guess we (humans) all do. What is ironic is that the TEDx talk is virtual (and pre-recorded). That being said, I was weighed down by stress. I was overwhelmed and somehow had stage fright even when recording the talk in my studio (in the same setting as the privacy guides). I think it has something to do with the complexity of sharing my thoughts on why privacy matters. There is so much social pressure to accept things the way they are. Anyhow, I ended up giving up, but Megha (curator of TEDxTKMCE) kindly push me to reconsider and I did. It’s OK to fail. But it’s also OK to push through. I’m glad I did. Thanks again for your kind words. ❤️
a video on online meeting encrypted could be cool because I guess that zoom support E2EE but google meet not
2:25 still wondering why. Thanks
one drive? or mega?
I use mega but I'm not sure about onedrive
Mega. Even if you don’t care as much about security, they have good storage pricing, and I personally like their client side software.
Without Drive/Dropbox, how can a person send files over the internet?
WeTransfer
@@bx_h23 WeTransfer isn't foss either, though. What about LinShare?
This is like if I needed to find out how to put air in my tires but to do so I had to take a course in auto mechanics. But thanks anyway.
Is OneDrive Private?
Make a patreon!
Use your own server (Synology)
That's what I do. I use Synology Drive. I've removed all my data off OneDrive and Google Drive and used SDrive instead. However, you'd still need to have an off-site backup. And I use iDrive for that, using my own private key. And I also incorporate Cryptomator before my files get synched up there. Just to be sure. :)
When I don‘t know, I do not trust!
The Preview test is absolute bullshit. Im a hobby programmer that has done encryption and companies can very much encrypt and decrypt anything in the browser
Algorithm
Loving your content and your videos! But you should prepare the videos more properly, and I think you know this already. Just do :)

Please add a disclaimer that this is your early impressions rather than the opinion of a security expert. This video rambles and should only last one minute. This is why I was only briefly subscribed.
Hey Brandon, thanks for sharing. I see this channel is not a good fit. Feels like unsubscribing was the right things to do.
Yes. Thought you should know. Perhaps in a year it will be a better fit. Your borg video was better.
