Kudos to Lee for be honest, even if it means to have less orders and maybe even a manufacturer not so happy by the review... but in a long run, this is this kind of honesty that will pay off and make people order from Anderson's when they will need something! The captain isn't the captain for no reason! He's smart and knows it; but still, these days it takes balls for that!
There were a few moments where I felt that the NuTube version had a tiny bit more dynamic range on the high end but not enough to justify the price. On the other hand, it's going to take a certain amount of sales to bring down the price.
I like that you guys do “talk yourselves out of a sale”. It’s nice to know you’re honest and actually share your opinion and not just sell rubbish that you don’t like.
Yeah, every single time I hear someone say "the TS10 is the best" because they are a John Mayer fan, I have to bite my lip not to school them on the obvious: The TS808 and TS9 have been repaired and cloned more times than anyone can count so that doesn't say much for the TS10. You can spend $500 if you really want, but a Maxon OD-9 would be much cheaper and better than any of them.
Fair play to you guys for such an honest review. It takes me back to a video where the Captain taught us about the law of diminishing returns. Say no more!
Bob Pijnenburg I’m late to the party, but I’d say a Big Sky is up there for iconic pedals as well, even though it is a more recent one. Maybe a Small Stone in the phaser world as well?
I enjoy watching both of you. After work and my day off, when i watch your demo my every day stress goes away. I do enjoy playing my guitar when i watch the demo.
This video reminds me how much I enjoy Lee's playing. While I must give Chappers full credit for his abilities, Lee playing just sounds so effortlessly cool and easy-going - it's great to listen to.
I just got my first ever tube screamer a couple of weeks ago. It's a homemade clone of a TS9 that I swapped a 30 pound Behringer delay for, and it sounds amazing. Wonder how I ever lived without it, but I find it hard to imagine someone spending 200 quid on what's basically the same thing. I think maybe the whole pedal thing is beginning to get out of hand.
Still got the Digitech Bad Monkey I bought 8 years ago, one of the best investments I've made (given it was £29), don't know how people can survive without at least a clone of this beast!
I can hear that the 808 is battery operated rather than mains. It sounds like it as a Duracell battery in it, I find they give it a slight hump around 104hz
I disagree. Clearly sounds like an Energizer made in 2015, used in a flashlight for 3 hrs and placed in the pedal with the label side face down. After another deep listen, I think the guy on the left might have touched his tongue with it as well
i appreciate you guys being honest. i often don't hear a difference in more expensive things and sometimes i do. but there are some people out there that just say it's great even if they can't tell a difference
Thanks soooo much for that honest review (and the other ones). Looks like you're the only guys that still dare to say what they really think about guitar gear. Your channel has become my go-to channel to get some real insight. Nice to see that not all products end up being "very good". Much appreciated.
It's when you watch videos like this one and realise the honesty.. I'm glad there is such a tiny difference between these pedals.. means I'm not gonna be tempted to spend money I don't have on upgrading my tube screamer.. leaving me free to buy a new esp (don't tell my misses)
I use a ts9 which has been modded,I have changed the chip a few times and now I,ve settled on a tl072 this makes it more smoothe and less distorted !!! for me this is how I like it ,other people could hate it !!!!
Correction.. at 7:40.. that mix knob doesn't alter how much signal is going through the nu-tube, but rather how much of the distorted nu-tube signal is being blended with the original unaffected clean signal. Its merely a parallel blend knob ala "wet/dry". So if its set to center detent you are hearing 50% distorted signal and 50% dry signal, and so on.
Guys, the new knob on the NuTube Tubescreamer allows you to choose how much of the gain is coming from the tube or from the solid state circuit. You can have all the clipping coming from the NuTube, or turn it the other way and it behaves like a traditional 808.
I never owned a Tube Screamer until I bought the NuTube Tube Screamer and I tell you what... I love it! A dam great overdrive. I also bought it at a $100.00 off so I am super happy about that.
PD51 I agree that is their objective. But why pay more for the same tone? Why create a technology that drives up prices with no real benefit to the consumer. When these become cheaper that a tube screamer I will consider it. Is anyone even trying to consider the consumers perspective or do they think we all just buy new tech without thinking?
They can't become cheaper without the economies of scale and development of the technology, which requires actually building something and putting it on the market. It isn't nefarious unless they took the old pedals off the market right after producing the new one, without improving the price to performance ratio.
I love this channel, but they did a really crappy amp setup. Straight off they decided to plug into an *_already "screaming"_* tube amp they deemed as a base sound. No, a base amp sound is 'clean+ pick dynamics makes dirty'. * They instead were coming from the secondary use of the TS to tighten up a straight up distorted rhythm and lead tone. It's rare Sweetwater outdoes Anderton's, but they clearly did on this one. Just look for the Sweetwater review.
@@paulj0557tonehead well, Rob Chapman is part of it, so there's no real demonstration of the gear, just gain and widdly widdly woo. He's a solid player, but a horrible gear demonstrator. Lee and Pete are a FAR better demo combo.
Despite previous comments, you’re much more objective than the. And I love it when you just rely on your ears....who else does that, other than the Berlin Orchestra when supporting psychological research on BIAS. keep it up Rob & Lee
I like the Nutube version! The "more" vibe in the new Nutube version kinda reminds me of OCD, I think they have the same-ish sustain saturation. I notice that in certain settings the new one also has more similar harmonic content between the attack & the sustain. It makes the attack sound thicker and more aggressive. I wonder if that's because of the tube dynamic characteristic that adds harmonic to louder sound like the attack. It's not necessarily better though if you want a classic sounding TS. I think I like the new one because I'm basically not a TS person. Will I buy the new one? No, I'm poor :))
Still got my TS9 from the early 80s. It has always been a joy. I think it cost me a fiver, second hand. The reason I got it was because I saw Chris Rea use one and his Strat sounded great. Soon afterwards, I sold my Les Paul and got an old Tele and the TS was just the right pedal for some cleanish drive/sustain/guts (combined with my MSX microamp). Love it!!! BTW, I used it with a Marshall 50W master vol combo.
to make this pedal justice, I think it would be nice to put this pedal through a cleaner amp where integrating a valve could be appreciated regarding dynamics in respect to the other diode clipping pedals. In an already driven valve amp the differences of course are going to be more subtle. Maybe even test them in a solid state clean amp so we can see if we feel the valve dynamics are there.
Regarding your comments about other guitar makers who have made iconic pedals, well Fender makes a phaser that has been in production since the 1970s . It has a great, classic phaser sound. I used to own one, and I used it all the time. I gave it to a good friend of mine and he loves it also.
Such a great pedal. One of those pedals, I think, proves the idea that less is more. I love the 808 myself, but wouldn't say no to all three, can't have to many overdrives.
The mix button is a mix button. Controls mix between dry and distorted signal. Hence nicer bottom end (which we can’t hear because it was eq’ed out like you would normally do when sound engineer records guitar but can’t be heard in room)
I'm not a TS fan and almost certainly won't buy this Nu version. However, where it came closest for me to a new sound more to my liking was when you plug in 18v. Please do a quick redo of this showing the Nu version on 18v
I think the benefit of the nutube one is the mix knob. The ability to control how much of your clean signal is mixed with the tube screamer is a really cool feature. I don’t see why they need a mini tube for that though. I think if they just released a normal tube screamer with the mix knob I’d buy it.
I've got a few TS/TS-alike pedals. They all sound a lot closer to each other with higher gain/level - as found here at the start. With less level, closer to line level - and with less gain, used as a crunch rather than an OD I think they sounds more distinct.
Agree the nutube sounds similar to the other two. Lee - I was thinking the same as you, using the new gain knob you could tailor it to be either pedal, so 2 pedals in one. Expensive!!! Rather have the D&M drive :)
Check out the wampler pedals channel. He compares the TS9 to TS808 etc basically it all comes down to pots having different values. So that "brighter" or "more gain" from one is simply because the pots are different values so 12 oclock on one might be the same as 11 oclock on the other. Also, how ibanez thought putting a nutube into a pedal before going into 4 preamp tubes and it making any difference is beyond me.
Nah these all were identical. But people online like to pretend there is a magical difference when there simply isnt. You can dial in the exact same sound from all tubescreamers really.
Chappers, I think some might object that a already gainy amp will not show us much from the low gain pedal. That being said, if djent players use a ts for tone shaping, go for it. I think it might be too subtle for RUclips though. Entertainingly honest! Really liked this one.
The price is definitely rather steep for what you're getting with that pedal. I think it sounds good but not *that* good. That JVM on the other hand just sounds stellar with or without the tube screamer. I hope you guys keep it in the demonstration room.
"Talk yourselves out of a sale" is spot on. I now know why my Maxon TS is nearly a neutral tool on the pedal board. At least to my ear the video shows no real difference and I can get some nasty tone and boost from any of the other pedals on my board. This was a great video!
There was definitely a difference, although it was extremely minor. Plus the switching between pedals was a bit too fast to fully absorb what each was doing differently.
BTW, if you want to solve the "invisible" LED problem; use a nail polisher/buffer on the LED, it will diffuse the light evenly and you can see the LED better from all angles.
Hey Captain, I think you got the little black knob wrong on the Nu-Tube TS, Sweetwater said in their video it allows you to add in more of the dry signal since Tube Screamers are known for still being able to hear part of the un-effected guitar signal, might want to check up in that and add a notation in this video if that is the case!
i liked that you guys "talked yourself out of a sale". it is another proof, that you guys are not as manipulative as a lot of other guitar-circlejerk-youtubers are. i will stick with my deamon tubescreamer anyways... lovely chinese copy.
Could you guys review the new Deluxe versions of the Tube screamer please? The TS9DX and the TS808DX and the korg one? There's a load of comparison videos the TS9 and TS808 but these variants have no comparison videos at all. I would love to know the originals compare to the deluxe versions.
To everyone considering a Tube Screamer, I’d like to suggest everyone try the Rocktron Reaction Supercharger. It’s the best TS type pedal I’ve ever used.
I love Andertons videos, but they really missed the point of what all this pedal does. If you want to watch a more helpful review I'd suggest the Sweetwater one. But when you use a pedal with expanded versatility the same way you used the old one, of course your going to get the same results. Hopefully Rob and Lee see this and do some more research into a pedal they wrote off without giving a fair chance.
I'd say the 808 is the least saturated. The TS9 adds some saturation but sounds fairly similar, maybe a little less lo-mid. The Nutube has a similar saturation as the TS9, but has a bit more highs. For the most part the difference isn't that intrusive so doesn't matter too much - to my ears, anyway. I'm really into these Nutubes, though, I'm excited to seeing where it takes amps in the future.
I think a potential way of looking at the NuTube screamer, is that it's effectively the TS808 and TS9 in one. So even if you can have both the old ones for the same price as the new boy if you buy used, they'll still occupy two spaces on your pedal board. I guess that's the only real advantage I can think of, in favor of the new version. That being said, I'm not saying you have to buy it, as it is quite pricey. In fact, I'd argue that the difference in sound between a TS808 and a TS9 is already small enough that there's not much point in having both unless you're a collector or something. Therefore, I agree with Lee in saying that the NuTube version doesn't really do anything that the old ones don't.
Phil Smith if the manufacturer would have done this themselves during r&d then maybe their price would reflect it
There were a few moments where I felt that the NuTube version had a tiny bit more dynamic range on the high end but not enough to justify the price. On the other hand, it's going to take a certain amount of sales to bring down the price.
i love anderson
They shouldn't make overpriced rubbish if they can't take critizism.
Yep. Andertons have them on offer now. I watched the video and decided against it but wouldn't stop me buying something else
The new Tube Screamer colour looks like the away kit
I'm thinking lego's
I only like the old model (left) , but i don't have one , i'm using a Nobels overdrive instead !!!!
lol!
I like that you guys do “talk yourselves out of a sale”. It’s nice to know you’re honest and actually share your opinion and not just sell rubbish that you don’t like.
Designed by KORG? We need a Korg NuMiku.
Not sure, man, it might make the Miku pedal sound too warm and organic
it's clearly called the Korg MikNu
NuMiku Screamer
If it made Miku track better, I'd be all for it.
Sakari Kempas Miku Screamer
SRV switched from ts808 to TS9 when TS9 was released. He also used a TS10, which is not as iconic as 808 and ts9, and has not been re-released.
yup people dont talk about that
Yeah, every single time I hear someone say "the TS10 is the best" because they are a John Mayer fan, I have to bite my lip not to school them on the obvious: The TS808 and TS9 have been repaired and cloned more times than anyone can count so that doesn't say much for the TS10. Conclusion: It’s a tube screamer, it sounds like all other tube screamers, but different. Ill take 7.
Fair play to you guys for such an honest review. It takes me back to a video where the Captain taught us about the law of diminishing returns. Say no more!
The guys at Sweetwater kinda made the differences come out more obviously.
You don't say?
I like them all. I think anyone will be happy with either kind
Honestly, I got a ts mini and it sounds great. It's cool if people want to spend more, but I'm fine with the mini.
From a purely aesthetic standpoint, that white 'Screamer is very sexifull.
nah.
I agree it's very pleasing to look at.
The big muff is a brand of itself, just like the Tube Screamer:)
Bob Pijnenburg I’m late to the party, but I’d say a Big Sky is up there for iconic pedals as well, even though it is a more recent one. Maybe a Small Stone in the phaser world as well?
17:55 - Miku, Metalzone and a Psychosomatic Drive - the board of dreams.
I enjoy watching both of you. After work and my day off, when i watch your demo my every day stress goes away. I do enjoy playing my guitar when i watch the demo.
The Ibanez guitar needs its own video please.
That Ibanez is gorgeous .
Rudraksh & Nishil's yeah that suhr is quite nice
Ripped off suhr headstock
Aren't almost ALL guitars either Fender or Gibson copies, though?...
TBH if anything, it looks like Ibanez' own Roadstar series headstocks from the mid-eighties, so... no.
It could be said that most any six in-line headstock is reminiscent of a Strat, lol... having said that, did you specifically look at the Roadstar?
"...it doesn't sound wor-You've just turned on all three haven't y-" *Rob starts playing with all three on*

I got an ancient cheap ts7 that got for 50 euro. It turns my amps OD channel into a nice a british rock machine.
My OD pedal is a Tone City Golden Plexi and for £40 it is magnificent!

I think it weird most haven't made the jump to digital. At least for their effects board.
YEa most classic distortion pedals are ridiculously simple circuits. There are hundreds of kits or pcbs available for a few ££
I can hear that the 808 is battery operated rather than mains. It sounds like it as a Duracell battery in it, I find they give it a slight hump around 104hz
Naah. Its 108 Hz. which is 432Hz divided by 4. Illuminati confirmed.
You win the award for most amusing comment on this video, witch.
😂😂😂
I disagree. Clearly sounds like an Energizer made in 2015, used in a flashlight for 3 hrs and placed in the pedal with the label side face down. After another deep listen, I think the guy on the left might have touched his tongue with it as well

Agreed love my mini
The mooer green mile is great too
They don't sound the same. They don't sound better or worse but they aren't the same.

run a Miku into a Wah. see what it does
krulty That would probably cause some sort of rift in time and space.
Possibly, But I think it would be interesting as both are an emulation of the human voice.
Good idea! I would just suggest an auto-wah instead
You crazy fools; you'll destroy us all!
I think you might hear someone speaking clearly as a result!
I appreciate Lee's honest reactions. "They all sound the same", "It's over the top expensive". He's right on both counts.
The NuTube Screamer is asking you to pay a premium for new technology, but doesn’t provide a significant difference in tone. No thanks.
A premium over what's already an overpriced item...

You get a thumbs up for your honesty. Plz keep up the honesty.
For that kind of money you could get a JHS Bonsai (9 Tube screamers in 1 pedal). Recently picked one up and absolutely adore it.
My wife bought me a sets mini for Christmas. It’s a fantastic pedal and around half the price of the 808 but in my ears, the same result.

We need a review of that Ibanez!!!
A local pawn shop listed a TS9 on Craigslist and it was in impeccable condition, so I bought it. $70 with a cable and two extra 9v batteries.
I like how Rob pressed all three pedals as if to say " I'd like all the gain now please"
I think you should try it with a solid state amp. It may act as a tube preamp, with a pushed tube sound.

😂😂😂🤣 So much that’s funny about this video. I’m dying! The seriousness and professionalism is killing me. Great stuff.
I had a TS9 with a carvin tweed bel-air when I had a 62 reissue strat. I used it to add to the gain on the amp aka SRV.

Hey Rob. Maybe you already thought or talked about it, I think it's time for Chapman guitars to create the next guitar company made drive pedal!!
I really liked the tone and the playing of Rob here.
It’s great to hear Lee give a realistic opinion about the price.
There was definitely a difference, although it was extremely minor. Plus the switching between pedals was a bit too fast to fully absorb what each was doing differently.
Honest as always guys, thanks!
Love these guys! They make guitar gear reviews fun!
Great vid and that new tube screamer sounds awesome!! I would say Suhr Riot or some of their other pedals are pretty iconic these days!!
Love the honesty guys. Keep it up.
Is that TS9 a reissue with the TA75558? (speaking of magical fairy dusty chipss)
BTW, if you want to solve the "invisible" LED problem; use a nail polisher/buffer on the LED, it will diffuse the light evenly and you can see the LED better from all angles.
It's not *explicitly* a pedal, but if you're talking about iconic outboard effects, how about the Fender 1963 Spring Reverb?
I be interested to know what the tube is actually doing. Is it for clipping, is it for overall warming of the signal?
Love the colors, love the implementation, love the sound....hate the price. What were they thinking?
my 90's TS9 is still my go to...

25 seconds in and yup...definitely getting one of the new Ibanez AZ guitars. AZ224F BIG ftw!!!
i liked that you guys "talked yourself out of a sale". it is another proof, that you guys are not as manipulative as a lot of other guitar-circlejerk-youtubers are.
i will stick with my deamon tubescreamer anyways... lovely chinese copy.
the mix knob is very useful for country playing.
Could you guys review the new Deluxe versions of the Tube screamer please? The TS9DX and the TS808DX and the korg one? There's a load of comparison videos the TS9 and TS808 but these variants have no comparison videos at all. I would love to know the originals compare to the deluxe versions.
Year later but that ts 9 sounds godly
My question is does it work better with a solid state compared to the others
I wonder if it made bigger difference trying it on a clean solid state amp.
The integrety of the review is most important to viewers i think
I don’t think there is a more iconic pedal than the Ibanez tubescreamer
BigMuff? Vox Wah?
There's some Miku fans out there that would like to have a word with you...
Fuzz Face!
Metalzone

You guys forgot that it sounds completely different when you plug it in with 18V ..... makes it really come alive.
