Great pedal but I really wanna say there is a huge improvement in video production quality. I also like how Mitch’s talking is much more relaxed and not rushed. Well done guys.
I'm a fan so far of these NuTube things, from Vox putting them in those teeny tiny amps to this. Sounds pretty dang good. Just need to get the pricing down 'cause I ain't paying 250 for a tube screamer.
What I am curious about is how the circuitry around the NuTube interacts. Dealing with step down current would have its own affect on he sound. I believe I read some drawbacks and advantages to this. I am guessing that there may be more experimentation and new approaches - which I welcome.
The NTS sounds so much better to me than the 808, much more hi-fi. It's more in line with what I think a drive pedal should do, especially at 18V. I'm very impressed.
Gee, this seems to address most of my wish list for a new version of the tube screamer - 18 volt operation, blend knob, less drastic EQ and more tube-like tone. The only thing that would make it perfect would be some sort of control over the bass - either a knob or a switch of some sort. I'm guessing we're going to see NuTube and other technology like it in future pedals.
I believe we all knew someone had to come up with something unique and progressive I would have never guessed it would be Ibanez...to my ear nutube technology may be the new standard in overdrive and distortion pedals.
I really like this style of review, and Mitch is fantastic at making them. I don't have a use for this pedal in particular, but I hope to see more of this format. (Maybe try to talk less in between side-by-sides)
On face value - I like this and it is great to see the incorporation of NuTube tech. Looks like I will have to give this a spin next time I am in Ft. Wayne. NIce demo Mitch.
I have to hear this in person but sounds really promising. The nu tube sounds more dynamic less compressed. But I’m afraid it will make my tube screamers obsolete.
I was sceptical about this new(nu?)TS till I saw this review/demo. It definitely sounds clearer and has more body than the original 808. I am a convert!
@@javiceres well it’s easily adjusted. If you’re use to using the bridge pickup & a TS scoops to much lows. Switch to the neck pickup that ordinarily would have way too much lows boosted
$250 is to much for something that does not sound any better than a TS9. At that price point there are to many pedals that give you a TS sound plus several other ones.
So don't buy it. I'm also a fan of cheaper pedals, but if someone want to pay 250$ to get a very specific sound, why not? Also don't forget that these alternative pedals usually just copy an expensive pedal, so you need companies like ibanez, boss etc to keep issuing good pedals.
For the price, you can buy a guitar and TS Mini. Wish he would have gotten out a Squier Strat. That guitar already kicks ass. See if it works well on a low end axe. Just a thought.
Sure it would sound good. Tubes are right at home with the ceramic pickups found in budget guitars. It's what many of the greatest 1950's and 60's Fender Strats had in them. And this pedal is absolutely a REAL TUBE PEDAL. It sounds excellent!
Interesting that the Nu-Tube TS808 is $50 more than the Vox MV50 which is a Nu-Tube equipped 50w head that IMO sounds better.... I think that you can use the Vox head as a preamp too. It's a cool concept that its also really new, so I understand the price, but honestly, I hope that as this technology develops, it becomes less expensive.
he is saying that but it's not true. I've built a few tubescreamers, there's no mixing in there. Just the overdriven signal goes straight to the output. Take a look at the schematic - clean goes in, dirty goes out :) www.electrosmash.com/images/tech/tube-screamer/tube-screamer-true-bypass-schematic.png
I doubt it will take off. I have tried many MANY pedals chasing that sweet tube overdrive. While the nutube sounds pretty good it doesn't hit the spot. Make yourselves a matsumin valvecaster, runs off standard 9v supply and sounds amazing.
As a stand alone Overdrive I think it sounds better than the Reissue 808........But there's already so many excellent OD/DS pedals on the market currently. It would be interesting to hear this comparison using a High-Gain tube amp...ala Boogie, EVH , Friedman, Bogner, to see how well the NU-Tube works as a front end boost.......I really dig the science/concept and hope to see it succeed in other formats besides a TS-808
watching all the review on this nutube from ibanez and reading some comments i think this pedal is a pricey one and there a little bit difference on other tube screamer, but when i try it on the music store, i was wrong, this nutube was awesome especially on live
Hey, Don! Thanks so much for reaching out. The Nu Tubescreamer is equipped with an actual vacuum tube, but much smaller than a traditional tube that you would find in a typical tube guitar amp. All other Tubescreamer pedals use a traditional diode to achieve the clipping and gain we all have come to love. These are now discontinued, but they are still very cool pedals. If you have any other questions feel free to reach out! Thanks and have a great day. Jack Wellington, Sweetwater Sales Engineer, (800) 222-4700 ext. 3240, jack_wellington@yahoo.com
Cool pedals, I would prefer the Nu TS because of the mix control. Anyway, I love my old Ibanez ST9 Super Tube Screamer which I use more as a treble boost.
can't Ibanez use a knob with a clear marking for the mix control (clean/OD section) of this new pedal? how am I supposed to tweak on the fly if there is low stage light? i'm sure that can be solved with a bit of white out or bright sharpie but couldn't they have considered that?
I bought that one a week ago... I use it with Gibson Firebird and Bassbreaker amp - sounds realy great! It shoots my solo out of the band mix, but there's one problem: some strange click while switching it off comes out of fhe speackers, also it doesn't work in the amp's loop. Not good for Ibanez for such a high price
I like to check one of these out in the store. I'm a TS fan myself I have a TS-808 and TS9, and both have the JRC4558 opamp inside them. I also have a boutique clone of the TS which slays. It can lean to the plexi sound.
I've been jamming through a *'single ended' (* *_not_* *push-pull) one> 6AQ5A output tube, and two>12ax7 preamp tubes* amp for 20 hours of the past three days. Believe me when I tell you, this NuTube Screamer *IS* a real tube pedal right down to every sweet sounding chonk and sizzle. The *Korg Nutube 6P1 Double Triode Thermionic Valve, Parallel Base, 45 x 16 x 5.6mm* costs $49.00 ea. , and probably much less in quantity, but they're not $0.49 cents. Which is more than any chip in the traditional Tube Screamer is. Plus think about it. $250 is a great investment. We all know what 1st editions bring in 20-30 years. Duh.
Hard to tell the differences of tone between 9W and 18W listening to this video. As for the difference between those 2 pedals, I prefer the sound of the classic 808. I guess I will have to go in store and try it before I decide to buy it.
The 808 to me sounds like there's some sort of high pass filter set too low. The NuTube delivers the entire frequency spectrum (which you heard as "harsh").
I think it would have been a good idea to just go with a completely new name for this Ibanez pedal. I understand the reasoning in wanting to piggy bank on the success of the previous tube screamers but it will also hold them back in people comparing price points of all the variations.
sounds good. I think the price point is a bit agressive, though. Ibanez may find they need to adjust it a bit. $249 for the new one, when a guitarist could go $179 for a TS808, or $99 for a TS9. That's not even considering purchasing one of the older ones, second-hand. Might end up being a tough sell to most. I'm a bit torn, myself, though. Certainly like the tone and the updates.
Stewart White I wouldn’t buy it. Buyers need to stop buying in to overpriced pedals, it just lets the pedal makers do what they want. Obviously this excludes boutique and small brands, but Ibanez has too much to be selling a $250 overdrive that’s slightly different than their previous $100 overdrives
Yeah, that's kind of my impression. I almost think they would have been better to just name it something else, and not try to ride the success of the TS.
Yeah, I would say, for a mass-production company like Ibanez, the 808 should be more like $150 and this new one should be more like $180. It’s frustrating that the big companies who can make things cheaper started charging more in reaction to smaller builders who HAVE to charge more. That should not be how the market works :(
Not to defend Ibanez, because this pedal is priced a bit too high but then so is the ts808... But as Dissonant Timbers pointed out, those nu tubes are priced ridiculously high as well compared to a 12ax, and of course even more so than diodes, for the common buyer that is (cheapest i've seen is 35 usd), way cheaper for a manufacturer, but I'd imagine it does add a large % on production costs, but on something that is already overpriced in it's standard form soooo.... But that blend knob is sweet
I just bought a TS808 replica for £32 from a guy on ebay. He builds them himself to a very high quality. It has the original JRC4558D op-amp and it sounds beautifully grainy and sweet. I bought it just to try it out not expecting it to sound like the old originals for such a low price but it knocked my socks off. He does different versions also. When I heard of the NUtube technology I was quite excited for the possibilities hoping there will be a high gain preamp with multi channels but I have not seen anything like that just yet.
I love the sound, would like to hear it boosting the front end of a DSL on high gain channel (set around 6) with an SG or something. Hate the price though. Rather have the kingsley page as id only be using the ts as a boost anyhow.
It has kind of a weird masking sound to it that I do not like at all, but I never liked any of the Tubescreamers and could never figure out why certain players would use them, even some of the most important players have used one at least at one point in their career. For the most part, there are no distortion pedals I like. I prefer it to be tube dist. in the amp with an external compressor like a Boss CE3 on my pedal board. I think this nutube component is something to keep an eye on. I think it is a really cool technology, and there's a homemade pedal on youtube with one that sounds good when the gain is down really low.
Great review as usual :) Quickly browsing, a nutube assembly costs 26.31 pounds. So where is the rest of the money invested in? I'm not paying 249 for the novelty. Companies like these really think customers are idiots.
Nice review but Nutube is slightly louder than the original one. I know he just put both volume knobs at the same level but he should adjust the actual volume at the same level. Nutube has little more fat sound and smooth voice but I'm gonna take the original one regardless pricing because it's just simply dammm good.
I'm glad they are doing this, but I agree that it's not much of a Tube Screamer. It's a new thing on it's own. I like it, but I'll stick with my TS808 and other TS variants. Good for Ibanez for pushing into "nu" territory though. :)
Put a tube in a pedal to sell to guitarists lol. They could probably make the TS sound better but it's probably such a lucrative product for Ibanez, all they do is create a 'better' product that is sufficiently different to not harm sales of the original. Like, ''Yeah. we know it sounds pants but you lot buy it, so instead of admitting it's pants, we'll make a better version but call it something else and make it 3 times the price!'' Solid state circuits can also sound good! just depends on quality of components used. So you could run the orig TS against a non valve pedal costing $250 and that too would probably sound better. I recently compared a Radial Tonebone Classic (tube) Vs Bogner La Grange and the La Grange was way more amp like and generally better sounding. Also, op amp distortion like in jcm 800, 900's is solid state clipping (like a non tube pedal) on top of tube gain - so add a solid state OD pedal to your tube amp and you've got a gain 'structure' similar to how high gain amplifiers do it. Not against tube pedals, just don't want us guitarists to fall for it just because it has a tube in it!
It sounds just like a Tube Screamer, but not much better. Get the new JHS Pedal with the Tree on it. It has about 6 different analog Tube Screamer circuits in it, including the KEELEY Modded version!
You can most definitely hear the difference that nutube imparts into the tone.. More 3dimensional, syrupy and warm.. I'm sold!
3:39 - Real TubeScreamer
4:10 - Nu Screamer
Great pedal but I really wanna say there is a huge improvement in video production quality.
I also like how Mitch’s talking is much more relaxed and not rushed. Well done guys.
😎👍
I'm a fan so far of these NuTube things, from Vox putting them in those teeny tiny amps to this. Sounds pretty dang good. Just need to get the pricing down 'cause I ain't paying 250 for a tube screamer.
Yeah - I'm hoping the prove to be very use-able in a lot of gear. Definiteily neat.
Well it sounds good because a new tube is literally just a small tube.
Agree, Nutube should be made to reduce the size, heat, power consumption and price, it proves it can create good tones, let's wait and see...
What I am curious about is how the circuitry around the NuTube interacts. Dealing with step down current would have its own affect on he sound. I believe I read some drawbacks and advantages to this. I am guessing that there may be more experimentation and new approaches - which I welcome.
Its just cosmetic, the sound doesnt change at all.
This guy does a really great presentation.
The NTS sounds so much better to me than the 808, much more hi-fi. It's more in line with what I think a drive pedal should do, especially at 18V. I'm very impressed.
The green one for me.
Excellent riff! Loved it!
Gee, this seems to address most of my wish list for a new version of the tube screamer - 18 volt operation, blend knob, less drastic EQ and more tube-like tone. I'm guessing we're going to see NuTube and other technology like it in future pedals.
I love how it sounds here, but I don’t forget I’m hearing a great guitar and amp combo to begin with.
I’m just staying by my lovely TS808 I love that sound from that classic pedal!
Im here for the great thorough explanations. Awesome vid
I believe we all knew someone had to come up with something unique and progressive I would have never guessed it would be Ibanez...to my ear nutube technology may be the new standard in overdrive and distortion pedals.
I'm a big fan of VFDs and seeing them pop into more music gear makes me all giddy :)
Great demo, i'm not a huge fan of tube screamers, but this one is certainly worth checking out
Great sounding pedal! The 18 volt option and Mix are real selling features for me. They add flexibility to sound modern or vintage. Bye-bye diodes!
I really like this style of review, and Mitch is fantastic at making them. I don't have a use for this pedal in particular, but I hope to see more of this format.
(Maybe try to talk less in between side-by-sides)
the NuTube sounds pretty nice!
☺👍
With the improved headroom and brtter dynamics, I wonder how it sounds with an Electric Piano...
that would be awesome!!
On face value - I like this and it is great to see the incorporation of NuTube tech. Looks like I will have to give this a spin next time I am in Ft. Wayne. NIce demo Mitch.
We hope you can stop by, Jack! Thanks for checking out the demo! 👍
It actually sounds really good.
I am a convert!
i like the way it SOUNDS
The new demo set looks nice! Not sure when you made this change but it’s a good improvement
Very nice, articulate demo. I like the mix knob as a bonus feature, I think Ibanez has a winner here but it needs to come down in price IMHO.
For me, tube screamer works a A LOT better with single coil pickups.
A TS makes the mids way too thick on most humbucker, agreed.
Well humbuckers are already boosting mids compared to single coils, so adding a mid hump is really pushing over the top
@@voxpathfinder15r OTOH skimming lows from single coils doesn’t sound really good to me... :(
@@javiceres well it’s easily adjusted.
Is it too much ? or are you going TO go ?

Joyo $30
FULLTONE OCD Pedal, does both of these and then some, for $100
So don't buy it. I'm also a fan of cheaper pedals, but if someone want to pay 250$ to get a very specific sound, why not?

Matt Campbell * Ibanez and their way too expensive gimmick ! I only have an Ibanez ts-9 because I stole it !
Exactly, Matt.
The Nu-Tube TS808's Tufnel rating is 11 in contrast to the Vox MV50's which is only 10. I can still hear the Nu-Tube TS808.
Nice review. Although it's worth mentioning that TS808 does not blend clean signal with the dirty signal. It only has one signal path.
i think what he was saying that it does through its singal signal chain automatically

how have they addressed their microphonic problem?
ill just take the guitar u can keep the pedal ; )
Damn ... that just leaves me the guitar leads :-(
since someone by now has taken the pick and strings, i'll take the shavings of microscopic pick and string parts
dilly,dilly! :-)
Oooohh. Ooooohh. I’ll take the miniature globe. Hahaha suckers.
I’ll take Mitch! :)
I believe that adding a noise gate within it, may have actually made this thing worth it.
How can you demo an OD pedal without even tweaking the gain knob?
You need to try NTS pedal with a Fender base breaker 30r . On lead It sound amazing.
Cool idea! 😁
What’s the difference between the nu and the rest of the screamers

So will it run on 12 Volts as well? Not all supplies serve up 18 Volts...
A tube screamer that actually has gain in it 😨 what sorcery is this!
nice demo

in the interest of transparency, was sweetwater paid by ibanez to do this video?
Excellent review. Very well done.
Nu tube for the win
Does Steamy Ray Vaughan use the Tube Screamer too? If so, I'm sold. Take my money!
Ibanez announced the sale postponed.
This summer or later.
what's with those downstrokes?
I like to check one of these out in the store. I'm a TS fan myself I have a TS-808 and TS9, and both have the JRC4558 opamp inside them. I also have a boutique clone of the TS which slays. It can lean to the plexi sound.
The Nu Tube Screamer is a bit warmer sounding IMO and it certainly delivers a nice, rich tone but all this comes with a hefty price tag, no doubt.
Does it clip symmetrically like the original Tube Screamer or asymmetrically like a 12AX7?
So sparkle drive?
Great review - thank you so much!
Thank YOU, René! We appreciate you checking it out! 👊
I just ordered a Suhr Eclipse for $200.00 brand new. Two channels with 3 band eq on each channel.
Great video Mitch. Will Korg be making Nutube power amp tubes eventually, or just preamp tubes?
Very nice!
I would use the New Tube Screamer as my basic rhythm tone, and then use the traditional TS to boost the signal for leads.

Shoulda chosen a brighter Guitar to compliment that mid boost. Looks cool, not buying for that price. Just get a ts mini and an eq at that point
Great review!
Thank you! We appreciate you checking out the video!
3:35 vs. 4:06 is the meat of the A/B comparison. I can't hear a whole ton of difference.
In this video I liked the 808 better. The NuTube version sounded a bit harsh to me, less string definition... The 808 sounds so much softer...

What?
Did the producer of the Reverb.com vids quit and go to Sweetwater

Also, op amp distortion like in jcm 800, 900's is solid state clipping (like a non tube pedal) on top of tube gain - so add a solid state OD pedal to your tube amp and you've got a gain 'structure' similar to how high gain amplifiers do it. Not against tube pedals, just don't want us guitarists to fall for it just because it has a tube in it!
It’ll be awhile before NuTubes become affordable and usable.
It sounds just like a Tube Screamer, but not much better. Get the new JHS Pedal with the Tree on it. It has about 6 different analog Tube Screamer circuits in it, including the KEELEY Modded version!
it sounds good, but it has so little to do with the TS name that i wish they'd just give it a *Nu* name!
