Could you be more specific on the recipe of this sound/effect (other than "it's the SPX-90 effect" I hear some subtle flanging w/slow modulation...and possibly a VERY short delay as if to mimic the "doubling effect" is this close?....I guess you could also use a Lesley speaker with a very "slow" rate... With a short digital delay for the doubling/ super quick "slap back effect"
Yep I've got the info for the exact patch and down to the percentage of the detune. Not on me though. It will be in the video. It's also a specific mic (sm58 half cupped) preamp and comp etc.

I just went through your channel. You did the New rose by the damned. Just to correct you it was the Ramones who ignighted the punk scene in England. The damned were the 1st English punk band to release a record. Why haven't you done anything on the Ramones or Queen. Queen early stuff is really heavy
The Ramones remained a largely US phenomenon until later though and Punk in the UK became its own thing. I see and hear the influence of the NY scene in it but more from Television and Richard Hell. I found the US scene pretty tame in terms of subject matter and sound in comparison.
You're spot on about Queen's earlier stuff.

They initially happened in a bubble with a handful of people aware of them. Americans try to claim CBGB's started punk but the Ramones album flopped and they got famous over time. Never mind the bollocks rocketed to number 1 DESPITE being banned. The Sex Pistols trully launched punk. Punk is UK to the core. The Ramones were just junky rockabilly pop but they did it well.

to me it just sounds like a compressor and a stereorizer/spacer
The chorus effect looks to be a Yamaha SPX-90.
It's all outboard gear: DBX 190 Comp, 1073 style preamp distortion and Yamaha SPX90 preset #23 with settings tweaked to +5% on the left and - 5% on the right (detune).

I love the first few Deftones albums. I covered some Deftones stuff back then. Once using those style of effects on the vocals I realized that anyone can do Chino's vocals. You hear their old demos and realize how weak his voice is. I think Terry Date took some of his Pantera know how and really took the Deftones to the next level. I think their first albums would have been shit without him.
To paraphrase the words of Fred Durst he 'brought it to the plate, and he made it sound great'
You really giving Terry all the credit for songs he didn't write or perform. He complimented the band really well and is an expert in his field but he is just one element of what made them successful.
I've heard the demos of those songs.... yes, I'm saying Terry Date's production made the Deftones better than what they are... or were. I've been to a Deftones show once. Probably 2001. They were horrible live. I like the Deftones.... I'm just saying it's their production that makes them sound good. They might be better now. After all these years, I'd hope so.
To be more precise, I should say Terry Date made Chino's screaming have balls. The drums and bass were amazing. Guitar tones were awesome, although there was nothing mind blowing going on playing wise.
With that said, I own a number of Deftones albums and they were an influnce on me when I was younger.

Chino Moreno's Vocal Signal Chain is quite complex and incredibly specific....not to mention, dialed the fuk in so well...that it's a fukin Musically Crafted MONA LISA ........ not to mention his actual vocal ability thats pushed through it....
....and his Lyrical word play and somg writing....

That's funny because this info is from the producer that recorded him down to the 5% up and down on the vocal effect. He didn't use distortion on every track.
