I am absolutely fine with people who only play WH as a means to win in a competitive game and not care about lore, that they don't give a f. I do however despise hypocrites who pretend to care about lore, yet would support any lore-defiling crap GW pushes.
For another reason why the Custodes have never included females, consider the mindset of the Emperor himself. He flat out refused to make female Astartes and Primarchs despite the fact that he had the means, the opportunity, and a perfectly viable female template in Erda. And despite Malcador straight up asking him to do it. Big E said NO. I find it difficult to believe he would be so adverse to female Astartes and Primarchs if he was already handcrafting them in his personal bodyguard.
He didn't want Astartes to replace humans. Funny, GW could have said Cawl just disagrees amd makes marine girls, because he wants to crossbreed a world eater and blood angel for science.
But GW can't even be bothered to make up a flimsy excuse to pandering.

This goes a step further in my opinion. It's one thing to change the lore for political reasons and then defend it because "the lore changes all the time."
It's another thing entirely to change the lore and then pretend that "it's always been that way".
As I've said before, Lore retconning because GW is idiotic is one thing, but retconning something for political/malicious reasons is unacceptable. The intention of the retcons is what annoys people more than the retcons themselves.
But you have to admit it is a bit weird that this rather minor lore change is what makes people supposedly quit. Where was the massive outrage when GW claimed that the Leagues of Votann have always been around? Or the Rogal Dorn tank?

Black rock and vanguard both own massive stocks in GW these people are well known shareholders who push their political agenda in games all the time. This was probably why for the change, we can excuse the other changes for being just straight up terrible lore changes but not really malicious. This one has a possible person pulling the strings from behind and perhaps a huge political agenda trying to push DEI in Warhammer. Having been in 40k for close to 30 years, the "there have been other retcons" completely rubs me the wrong way because while it's not wrong, they were A) met with about as much vitriol as this, and B) they actually had SOME lore, no matter how shitty, to explain why it was a thing. GW has never once done a "It's always been this way" outright lie without anything at all backing it up until now. Even trash like Newcrons or Primaris had lore (the former being an actual retcon) to explain it.
And that's the worst part. They literally just had to do a paragraph saying that it turns out the custodes also take daughters, and that would have been that. Instead they resorted to blatant lies and gaslighting and then blocking anyone calling them out.

@@actuallyKriminell Warhammer as a whole exists in spite of GW as a whole (when they don't just take it out). thinking back, another point to some of the Retcons were they expanded how some of the story could go. I was one of the people who first heard about Warhammer 40k not that long after the time of the newcrons, and even when i had issue with the idea, the fact that they could tell different potential stories via the newcrons was something i could at least agree may have some teeth.
Getting told during all this by an ex-GW writer that there's no such thing as "fact" in the setting, is not inspiring me to care about the overpriced plastic toys. we know they are retcon happy, but the idea that they honestly shouldn't/don't give one care about consistency means it's just the most blatant manipulation to buy said overpriced plastic toys. found out several defining moments I liked have been retconned in recent years as a bonus during all this.
Even if they did add such a paragraph of justification, I’d oppose it on principle.
There's actually nothing in the lore that states female Custodes Can't exist; The passage people keep sighting refers to 'modern' Terran nobility offering up their sons as tribute. The Custodes were created before the Imperial Palace was constructed, so it's safe to say their recruiting practices may have changed over the years.
Since they are explicitly Not Space Marines, and the process to make them is explicitly different, there is no actual lore stating there would be any issue with a female being turned into a Custodes.
Given that the original Custodes were all created by the Emperor himself, and many of that original batch are still around, it's entirely possible that the female members that currently exist have just always been there. Recruitment methods ten thousand years apart could easily have changed; Just because Terran nobility prefer seeing their daughters become Sisters of Battle, or enter the Commiserate, where their prestige might actually be put to use some day for the good of the family.

I left the hobby a while ago and it was only a matter of time before GW bent the knee as if their crummy business practices weren't enough. Thank you so much for NOT being a GW shill. I love 40k, it's a great game, but GW has always treated their customers with the utmost disdain and contempt. This video has been a breath of fresh air.
They weren't always. I still have a stack of tattered old White Dwarf magazines with articles and advice that would get modern GW drones sacked like "make your own terrain using whatever" or "use non-citadel miniatures as standins if you need to". The local storefront staff were just nerds who loved the hobby too and hosted rowdy games nights. When my dad ordered one of their big Battlefleet Gothic starter fleet deals (they didn't do curated box sets nearly as much back then), the Trollz were already running out some of the kits, so they sent what they could with a (deliberately) crudely-scrawled note and threw in a bunch of extras we *didn't* order while we waited for them to ship us the rest. I'm legitimately sad I didn't keep that note.
Sure, most of this this should be the bare minimum, but GW used to have human beings working for them is my point.

See this is how I deal with canon for other IPs as well. Star Trek, Star Wars, Xmen, Spiderman. It just ended at the woke point somewhere around 2014/15. I say, "yeah, these things were great, but they got corrupted and died. Watch the first movies and read these books. They're great, but then they fall off a cliff."
Even in older Spiderman the Spiderverse just doesn't exist to me. It's a shit add on from where they couldn't think of new stories.
It's just sad because none of these IPs were anywhere near a conclusion if they'd just not used them as vehicles for divisive politics, or undermined their own lore for divisive modern dayisms.

I get it when we're talking about minor points like the physics of a perpetual, the use of time travel, or the functioning of the warp; stuff that they really can mess with and show in all different directions, but other things are more bedrock and to undermine them makes everything shaky.

People who say "Who cares" are not fencesitting, they have actively chosen to accept this and they are trying to mitigate or deflect the anger of the people who are opposed to it.
No that's not the case we not trying deflect anger we just believe your making this out to bigger then it needs to be and think unrealistic anger is not needed. It changes so vary little that it really doesn't matter. Female custodes are within reason and not really all that outlandish.

The problem with Gate Keeping is that it is not very effective if the IP holders don't side with their fans. As long as the IP holders hold the door wide open for tourists to come and destroy the franchise, there's not much we can do other than close our wallets and boycott.
I have an issue with gatekeeping, i understand the fandoms want to defend their hobby from actually problematic people, but the problem is that it becomes very hard for newcommers to join. I think if you gatekeep, you should be carefull about how you bring your oppinions out

There is one other thing that we as fans can do and that is create our own content with the IP. We need to show what 40k is at its core even if GW refuses to do so. We have all long since known that GW doesn't do outside media very well what with youtube videos like Astartes, Lord Inquisitor, and even TTS all being wildly popular ways that people have gotten into the lore. It's all because the fans took the IP and made it into what it could and should be instead of whatever diversity hire DEI advisor demanded what the IP should be.

I dunno, I kinda smelt it in the books for about the last quarter of the HH, especially the more recent Solar War and End and Death. They kinda slide it in in small ways when they have a chance.

All the SMs and custodes seem to have rich, dark skin in their descriptions now, otherwise theyre not described.

Hey man I discovered you because of this debacle. Keep of the good work man! I will always love 40k but im personally done. I had big plans for making a pure scion army. I own 2 armies and 94 black library books. I read probably three new books on average a month and for a few years now i have been going heavy on 40k stuff. No more. Ill spend my money on other hobbies. I own a total of 428 books currently. There is plenty of fantastic sci fi out and plenty of other hobbies I can occupy my time with. I have a buddy who is big into 3d printing whos offering everyone in game store group that he will 3d print minis for cost of materials. The only thing they have of value is the setting. Many of us only buy minis and the books to support them.
Lovecraft is public domain, his cat's name can't be retconned, and the kitty sorts out tourists.

Looking at their stock price, it's been falling by 1% since the announcement. While this drop isn't necessarily caused by this change alone, it's most likely caused by the Custodes codex being bad, Tau pre-orders not being a thing, no stock on anything ever, etc.

Orks and fantasy O&G- greenskins in general, were given a large retcon; they were changed from a more traditional tribal race of peoples to what we know them as now: fungus. This is an example of a large retcon of their entire concept with the crucial difference that it was made with the intention of making them BETTER and more fit for the setting. This is the opposite to the approach the woke take.

I really just hate this entire situation. The past two weeks have not been a fun one for me. The only silver lining and slight amusement I've gotten is seeing one random person who said the Fallout show (that further ruined the already butchered lore) was great and they "clearly loved the source material" who was also upset by femstodes because it ruins the lore. The irony amused me, but GW selling out and my last bastion going woke wasn't really worth the slight chuckle I got from that.

First I want to put in context that this news (female custodians) was leaked by The Voice of Horus (Voz de Horus) at a global level (chapter master Valrak confirms it in his video), the Voice of Horus continually releases a podcast announcing the news both for the rules and also talking about the custodes, which they do in a mocking way trying to create discord among those of us who do not think that this retcon was a good idea. When I finished listening to that podcast, I went to give my respectful opinion in the comments box, letting it be known that I did not agree with their opinion and that I also thought it was in very bad taste that being one of the main Spanish-speaking ambassadors of Warhammer They will not take the division of the community seriously but rather the opposite by promoting it, following which they delete not only my comment, but also those of others who do not think the same and also restrict comments on their IVoox podcast.
We all know what happens when a community is divided and it is unfortunate that the same ambassadors are the ones who promote it. I just hope I don't see a star wars in warhammer 40k.

So, I think the way this can be salvaged is that GW release a statement saying that they are not full custodes, but rather human auxiliaries that bare modified versions of Custodian power armor and weaponry in combat and training drills similar to how Inquisitors can get access to modified tactical dreadnought armor. And outside of combat, they essentially act as the silent hand of the Custodes within the Senate Imperialis and the other apparatuses of Imperial Bureaucracy keeping their master's appraised of the comings and goings of the wider galaxy.
I am no longer excited for the Space Marine 2 game.
It likely has the denúvó mal ware in it.
Hopefully it'll be OK. It started development looooong before this.

I moved over to Warlord Games. Bolt Action is fantastic and the new epic Hail Caesar looks amazing. New start set will be Republic vs Carthage.
I started on 40k as a kid back in 93, and until after the 2005s, being a "nerd" was very much frowned upon. Was not easy often, old warhammer collectors were usually not the popular kids in school, but we did have the hobby, as our tiny space of our own.
Fandom was pretty much one unit, hell we did not even make fun of Space Marines back then.
Ever since this extreme political group slipped into the hobby, it's been a war ever since, what was escapism has turned into a battleground.
And that has really saddened me.
I've sworn off GW tbh. I know you said not to leave the hobby, but man, after this, its difficult to summon the willpower to care about he setting in general.

I bailed out of the Star Wars fandom for good once Disney got a hold of the setting, de-canonized the existing lore (the Expanded Universe) and began to re-create the Galaxy Far, Far Away in it's own unholy image...
For the past 2 or 3 years I've been tentatively exploring 40K, reading the Black Library books and some of the game manuals like Wrath and Glory (I'm more of an old school RPG gamer rather than a wargamer), and I don't think I have it in me to quit *another* fandom that I've taken a liking to.
I find the 'They've retconned other things' argument very flawed.
It sounds to me like they're saying that bc it's an old problem means that it's not a problem.
