Simon, I really can not properly describe the immense positive feelings I get from watching your videos. I will actually pause them and think about what it is that I am feeling and why. Simply put, your outward love of nature and the ability to simply state the reasons you choose to photography a particular scene. Along with the beautiful images you create there is one other thing about your videos that allows them to be more than just a talented fella wandering the woodlands pursuing a passion that he loves, and that is Meg. It is more than wonderful to watch you two enjoying life and each other. Being in the States it is highly unlikely that I will ever get to meet you both in person. But my heartfelt gratitude, love, and respect, will always be with you both. Thanks Simon, and thank you beautiful Meg! (-Book ordered, can not wait to get it!)
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind comment, Brad. I've shown it to my partner as I was really chuffed with it ☺️. Thank you also for ordering my book! Very much appreciated!
I'm thrilled to announce pre-orders of my book. 'Gathering Time'. baxter.photos/shop/gathering-time 90 photographs from the past 6 years. 10,000 words. Foreword by Joe Cornish and essay by Lucy Jones. It's been quite a journey since 2012, so I hope you enjoy the written and visual journey through the book. Thank you very much for your very kind support!
Pre-ordered my book. In my opinion, one of the best parts of RUclips is how it enables photographers to reach an audience that can then help support the photographer's work. Even though the book will set me back probably $80 (book + shipping to USA + the currency conversion), it's a small price to pay for the effort of making these videos and the enjoyment I get out of watching free content. Thanks Simon. Everyone who appreciates this content should get a copy to say thanks.
What you visualise, how you verbalise and produce those images is absolutely wonderful. What an inspiration. I am looking forward to receiving your book so much. Thank you Simon.
You have a way with words and explanations, Simon! I especially liked your talk about connecting with nature rather than your gear. I find that when I 'connect' with an area, I make better images than when I don't. You have reminded me to seek the emotions in a scene rather than the technical aspects. Also you do a good job of explaining how you 'see' a scene in the tangled limbs of the woodlands. It helps to hear how you compose a scene. The images you got in today's video are amazing and you clearly demonstrate how you can create art from woodland scenes. Finally, I do enjoy watching Meg enjoy your wanders. She must be an absolute joy in your life. Thank you and good luck with your book sales.
Thank you Simon for producing and sharing this wonderful video! I appreciate and enjoy all of them. Love to Meg. "In the woods, we return to reason and faith." Ralph Emerson Waldo.
Tension, conflict but peace- seems like a good lesson to learn on different levels. Thank you Simon for your continued mindfulness through your images and words.
As soon as you said the book is now available I stopped the video and went straight to your website and ordered a signature series copy of your book. Yes I did finish watching the video. I have been waiting years for this book. Thank you!
Older cameras do work well. I use an old D800, and consistently have photos accepted into two shows here in New Mexico in which less than half of the submissions are accepted. Content is king, not the technical stuff-to a point. That's your point here, of course. Oh, and "Hi Meg!"
I love watching your dog as much as I do your photographic experiences. I, too, had a four-legged photo field trip and camping buddy for several years. It seemed like she knew to always move off to the side so as not to be in the picture. She loved camping in the truck with me. She has been gone 7 years this month and I still miss her.
Beautiful video of which I share every single word. The composition is probably at the apex of the pyramid of this photographic genre, it is the way to order the internal and external chaos, the equipment is only a means. Good luck for the book I can't wait to have in my library. At the beginning of the year it will be my book's turn.
Lovely video, Simon, with some great images. Your comments in the early part surely cover much of what good landscape photography, in fact good photography in general, is all about: the connection with the subject. The tools are our servant not our master. Well said.
Simon, you bring such positivity and certainly an appreciation for nature that I love so much. Woodlands are one of my favorite things to photograph. Watching your videos and "taking the trip" along with you and your awesome companion Max have become so valuable especially during the pandemic. Working seven days a week has meant there is no time to venture into the woods or do any photography for the past two years. But I have traveled with you and Max and have learned so much from your videos. The fact that they help me forget the stress of these times is just another wonderful benefit. Thank you for producing such awesome content. Please continue to teach us and share with us! Of course, I've ordered the Collector's Edition and can't wait to get it. I am blessed to travel with two Australian Shepherds (Rusty & Spencer) and my incredibly patient husband Charles as I seek to improve my photography. I can't wait for the time to resume those wonderful woodland times and for your next video too Simon! Peace to you and yours! Donna PS I do love my gear and the memories and moments they allow me to capture... but I love that you remind us not to forget what lies in front of the camera and where is should be in our priorities!
It always amazes me that you are able to see so much in chaos. Lovely images Simon. Congratulations on completing your book. Also, a really good message as well about connecting with nature then using the camera as a tool. Love watching Meg. She does love her woodland outings with her dad.
My goodness, Simon ... I'm a huge believer in serendipity and a quick update vlog I just published this morning seems connected in your words from this update .... perfect timing .. thanks for sharing :)
That very first image is breathtaking, I love it! The other two images are amazing too as usual! And also I love you talking about how it's not the gear that matters but the love for nature and the understanding of it.
I love the still at 13:11 in this video. It breaks a rule. It's not the same as the featured square and 4 by 5 you showed before. This is because it does not have A subject. It does not show one thing, embedded into its surroundings with clean edges. It is wide landscape format. You look at the left, you look at the right, you look at the center and again at the left. You keep circling around discovering more and more details. There is no spot where the eye can rest. But what is out there from left to right, top to bottom, is pretty consistent in tone, rythm, texture, luminosity (only little brighter in the upper right which creates interest and does not disturb or pull out of the frame) and story. The invention of the "all over" was attributed to the USA painter Jackson Pollock. For me 13:11 breathes this spirit of all over, and let me be immersed to the nature I love.
Another joyous walk in the woods with you and Meg, it was great to tag along and Meg is as much fun as ever. :-) I wish you every success with the book Simon, it looks a real treat!

I agree with you on gear, roughly one year ago I upgraded from my ASP-C Nikon D7000 released 15 September 2010 to a used full frame D850 released 24 August 2017... OTOH my composition is always a work in progress. ;-D The images are wonderful as usual but Meg steals the show.

For me, it is just a natural blood pressure medicine, walking in the woods, and seeing all the beauty that is around me. And great shots by the way too! Such calming serene scenes that you capture 😎👍. Keep up great work!
Thanks for the video, Simon.Totally agree with the sentiments about connecting with the woodland environment. I also think that if more people did that, they would also respect the woodland. Sadly, in my local woods, there are some who use it and abuse it. Fortunately they are in the minority and the woods keep fighting back with wonderful new growth each year.
Many thanks, David. Yes, the abuse is difficult to witness but I'm also very fortunate to photograph in places which aren't subject to it. The other benefit of a genuine connection is that it promotes individuality in our work :)
Love your videos Simon, great connection with nature and very inspiring. That lovely dog has great character, might steal the show if he could use a camera!!! Thanks.

Love this channel and have been subscribed for years and will continue to do so, but I have seen lately a lot of RUclipsrs saying how the gear does not matter while at the same time using very expensive top of the line gear! I think good and nice gear can give a nice owner satisfaction and can also inspire to take more pictures, but I just chuckle a bit when I see the contradiction in what is said and what is shown on many photographers channels.
Hi! Thank you for watching and for your comment. However, please do listen to the video again because I never said that gear doesn't matter. I completely agree with you - gear does matter! I said as much in this video: ruclips.net/video/caeQ9ERI-yk/видео.html Part of my point was that some folk obsess over gear when they still have much to learn about how to make a good photograph. I spend a lot of money of some of my gear, but only once I know I'm ready for it and I feel like it will contribute to my workflow. I only upgrade when I've outgrown my tools. I would never say something as trite as "gear doesn't matter".
If your friend is taking world class photos but still isn't better than his 9 year old camera, it must be SOME camera! lol Maybe he deserves a new one ;) I'm still using a 10 year old M4/3 camera and have only one 14mm lens, but I'm still improving. I'll probably never reach your level but I just enjoy learning and trying to improve. Great videos. I've only just found your show and it's so relaxing whilst also being informative and encouraging. Keep it up!

Do you also have these thoughts, or am I overreacting?

The b-roll has been purposely composed with the tree in mind ;-) I know the tree very well, it's a beauty!
@@SimonBaxterPhotography - What is the b- roll? Is that the name of another video? Can you send me a link to it? BTW , love your work. My focus is nature photography in Texas, U S A.
@@markrossi5721 b-roll is the parts where he's not speaking directly to the camera, like where he's walking with meg etc
"Gathering Thyme"? :-)
Your style looks like it would suit large format. Just sayin. No pressure 😉
Haha, yes I've thought that too. Too much hassle and weight though 😳
Hi Simon, I'm trying to pre order the book but it's adding a £15 delivery charge to send to me in the Isle of Man. Its essentially the same postal system as the UK and shipping here comes at no extra cost. Is there any way within your website to circumvent this do you know?
Hi Steve. I'll look into it. It'll be treating it differently with it being outside of the UK. I'll come back to you on here 👍🏻
@@SimonBaxterPhotography thanks Simon. I could possibly just put UK in and then IoM as a County or something. That has worked in other instances
Hello again. All sorted! P&P should now be the same as the UK. Many thanks :)
@@SimonBaxterPhotography amazing, thanks! Will order tonight
I can’t tell you how chuffed I am to report my money is firmly in your account and I’m now eagerly awaiting Royal Mail to do their international thing
Fab news. Thank you very much 😁
How to uncomplicate the complicated.
