Good afternoon from Scotland guys! Great choice of performance! Here is 14yo (I mean- 14yo guys!!) Diana singing again in the amazing Russian competition "You are Super" OK, a very compressed explanation of the folk song -"A young orphan girl is being given away in marriage to the unloved. She goes to the river (Rechenka) - (the barrier between life and death) to ask her dead mothers’ blessings for a marriage that will not be a happy one.
The spooky voice is her dead mum answering back! The mood of the song changes and we hear the children in the yard playing and laughing, asking why the girl is so sad.
Then she cries uncontrollably. She is lifted into the boat to be taken to her wedding with resignation for a sad life." Yes, the crying technique comes from Diana's early Yodel singing. Isn't it used to amazing effect? Yes, she entranced the judges so much they almost forgot to press their buttons LOL! 👉 Rechenka/ River - This is an old Russian ritual song: An orphan girl should / wants to get married and goes to the river, the border between the living and the dead, and asks her mother for the blessing (mother's whisper)... The horses are in the courtyard. The guests are gathered and the wedding celebration begins. In Russia, it was customary to sing sad songs at weddings to scare off evil. This should drive away evil spirits and bring good luck. Such songs were called 'crying'.
Diana's rendition of this song is spectacular, mysterious... great!... everytime. Here, in 2018 she sang this song in the singing competition 'You are super' (she was 14 years old). She won and received international attention. Since then, millions of people have followed her on RUclips and her worldwide fan base is growing rapidly.
Here, she performed at the State Kremlin Palace at the concert for Cosmonautics Day on April 12, 2019.

Diana Ankudinova felt the composition on a mental level. She did not just sing it, but lived it and played it, moving from singing to mystical whispers. I prefer reactions, where people make at least a minimal effort to understand what it is they're watching before they whip out their score cards. We cannot all be vocal coaches or speak a number of foreign languages, but a little preparation goes a long way. And it gives people on both sides of the camera a chance to actually learn something.

She has been on that show for 2 seasons wining both seasons, as far as I understand it the 2md one was kind of like an all star season.
I'm so glad that I'm not the only one that feels something very dark about this song and performance. No doubt she's a world-class entertainer.
The song is much more than the sum of the words, it generally takes someone to explain it, or someone who understands Russian folk tales to fully understand it. In fact, it is a young bride-to-be who comes to the mystical river that divides the living and the dead so that she can communicate with her deceased parents to get their blessing.
The whimps and wails, or incantations, at the beginning are for accessing the underworld. The ghostly voice is her mother answering. Once she has the blessing, she marches to the end of the pier to shout for joy to her friends on the other side that all is well, she has the blessing, hence the change in mood to happiness.
She is then placed back into the boat by the spirits and repeats her various spells for the return journey as the spirit pushes her back to the land of the living. At least that's my interpretation of what's going on.
Personal note: As for Diana? Well what can you say, except that this really was a world class bravado performance, and by the way I'm almost convinced that she won the match then and there in the semifinal, it was that exceptional. Although, of course, everything she sang before and after certainly helped in the final decision.

Here is a short version of Diana's life. She was abused both physically and mentally by her birth mother. She was placed on the streets at around 3 years old and survived there until at age 4 she was placed in an Orphanage..Her adoptive Mom worked and fell in love with Diana (Deana) is how she is called. When found she was a wild animal and only her adoptive mom could through to her..The rest is history..

She was on two seasons in a row - the second a champions season and won both.
It's always hard guessing at the meanings of songs in a different language. This particular folk song is about a young woman who is about to marry but both her parents are deceased and she has no family to bless the union. It is believed that the spirits of the dead reside in the river, so she goes to commune with the spirits of her mother, which is where you get the sense that she's portraying a witch though it's really her mother speaking. The dancers are the river spirits. That's basically the story behind the music. It's always great when Diana envelopes herself into the story telling - it greatly enhances the performance and they did a great job on this show of supporting the storytelling aspects with the stage setting. ("You Are Super").
Diana is mesmerizng. You should listen to Dimash Kudaibergen next. Try S.O.S., Sinful Passion or Ogni Pietra ;-)

Yodeling is a traditional way of singing which involves repeated and rapid changes of pitch between the low-pitch chest voice and the high-pitch head voice. Notice that in Rechenka Diana was yodeling while being lifted up in the air and put back down, yet that didn't effect her voice at all.

Diana has something primal, mystical, but also sensitive and sensual in her voice and she lives her songs. Diana is a dramatic contralto, the rarest contralto type. Dimash is the universe, but Diana is the earth, our home... and when you hear her voice you feel like she has wrapped you in a warm velvet blanket and served you a mug of hot, dark chocolate. Diana was born in May 2003 in Arseniev in the Far East of Russia. She didn't have a happy start in life. The woman who gave birth to her had 12 pregnancies, only Diana survived ... and she did not love her child, abused her cruelly and tried to I drowned. Relatives found the child with a broken collarbone on the street and shortly afterwards took the 3-year-old girl to an orphanage. Finally there she found love ... from Irina Ponik. Taking a little child into the family was not easy for Irina. Her son was already 20 years old, the daughter 17 years old ... Start all over now? Yes!!! Diana came to a poor but loving family when she was 5 years old.
Diana spoke badly, cried a lot and was still very scared but she all sing songs from cartoons. And so, the singing teacher Elena Kazantseva discovered Diana's talent. And all started ...
During 2008 to 2012 Diana sang around 40 songs, including at competitions.
Diana's mother became her daughter's manager. Everything that has to do with Diana's singing training, performances, competitions, looking for sponsors is organized and coordinated by her mother Irina Ponik. She took extra sewing courses too. Since then, she's been sewing all of Diana's stage costumes, because all of these things consume the family budget. She accompanies her daughter on trips and captures her life in photos and videos with the persistence of a visionary.
After winning a competition in Moscow, Diana's mother was offered to leave the girl in a boarding school for gifted children. She refused and in 2012 her family moved to her hometown of Toglyatti, much closer to Moscow. Diana lost her fear that the woman who gave birth to her would kidnap her.
Diana's voice, her perfect pitch and her sense of rhythm were extraordinary even as a little girl and so she impressed with her talent in over 50 national and international competitions. Her confidence grew, her voice continued to develop ... until one day she was asked to compete in more distant competitions so that other children could have a chance to win.
In 2017 she went to Moscow, at the Russian 'The Voice Kids'. Next day, a huge scandal broke out in social medias. People demanded for Diana's participation in the competition.
A door had closed but a new door opened:
In 2018/19, Moscow hosted the 3rd season of a unique international competition instead of "You are Super", especially for adopted and orphaned children. The winner of the season (Diana) will be determined by a 6-day public vote and the final took place in the Kremlin Palace and her videos were uploaded to RUclips and soon she had millions of fans.
Diana won also a scholarship to the College of Music. Igor Krutoy gifted her a small apartment in Moscow. So, she could start her vocal training with the best teachers such as Professor Olga Donskoy (She died of Covid-19 in October 2020).
The break of voice made Diana’s voice even darker and deeper. She has mastered this time very professionally and has worked hard to bring back the lost high notes and has expanded her vocal range, currently from C3 to D6. Her genres are folk-rock, folk-pop, jazz, soul, blues, soldier songs and Diana-stile… tradition meets modernity.
She loves to sing in French, but also sings in English, German, Arabic and Spanish... but only phonetically.
But she is not only a great singer and storyteller, but also a humble, intelligent and hardworking young woman. She also gives charity concerts. She loves her family and her fans. They are 'friends' to her and they are very supportive of her. Diana is grateful that they helped improve her home studio and also supported her future plans. Her Russian Friends have chosen Diana as "National Treasure" (no official title).
2020 Diana graduated from high school with honors and now, she is a student at the Russian Institute of Theater Arts (similar to Juilliard). She is already composing songs and we will definitely hear her own song soon.
She will only take part in major competitions if invited. Such competitions require a lot of time, effort and strength. As a result, participants often have large educational gaps and problems later on. Diana is a smart young woman. She focuses on her studies, her voice and expanding her repertoire.

You all need to widen your area of musical interest if you think Diana is the best singer on this planet. There are quite a few from around the world that think, Melody Cristea, the singer for a sibling Vamp Metal group called Liliac is the best singer there is. Others in my circle think it's a Norwegian girl, named Angelina Jordan, that won Norway's Got Talent just after turning 8 years old. Some think it is Dimash. Some say Courtney Hadwin from the UK. I myself have to go with the young lady that just turned 15, and was signed last year by Republic Records. She has around 130 covers on RUclips, and her 5th original was just released 2 days ago. She is also the one that won Norway's Got Talent. Its not dark its about a river
it is her wedding day, her guests are there, but she sings in frustration to her friends, because she has a good home, there is food, a horse in the yard, meaning realiitive wealth, but she has no parents to bless her marriage.
Without the parents blessing, she will be vulnerable to the demons that come after brides. So, as an orphan, she sings to the river, cries to the river, to bless her Union, because she has no living parents. As she goes up the river in the boat at the end, she begs the river, do not lull, do not sleep!
The demons were not summoned, they are opportunists, ready to harass any unblessed bride, and really, what a great way for parents to keep control of who their off spring marry!

I'm curious on what you base 8.9? That implies some flaws and I don't see or hear any. This is a vocal and stage masterpiece the likes of which most artists will never attain in their lifetime and she's 14 here. Is she the best on Earth?, That's subjective to each individual but think about naming those who could compete with her skill for skill and it's a short list of established artists all of whom have held that "title" at one point in their careers. I'd put big money on her having that title applied to her in the near future, Sans the world remaining in a state of medical pseudoscience insanity and ruining her career with repeated lock downs/jailing of the populations.

I think you are confusing her singing with a vocal performance which is really what this is she is performing this is a story and a big one. И будет она как сотни других , с обыкновенным репертуаром. Ни композиторов, ни продюсеров в России нормальных нет, даже известные певцы на программе "Голос" ее срезали , просто не знали , что они могут сделать с таким голосом. This is her the best performance. Unfortunately, without any support of TV and music producers, she has not produced any song, comparable by quality or uniqueness for last 3 years. I am afraid of she is not attractive for Russian show business at all. So her talent may have a very limited success and implementation.
