Someone dropped the ball in promoting these ladies it seems. This is high quality indie pop/rock confection and their more aggressive power pop is also killer.
Everyone always blames lack of financial success on lack of promotion. It’s just denial plain and simple. Not to mention how financial success does not mean something is great in any other way.
@@Kuato Their first couple of albums were loaded with tracks that were top notch. I also said, "it seems". It could have been other factors but I wouldn't doubt it if their label said, "Very nice, the critics love you but how do we sell this?" that dog is pretty damn quirky and outside the box. It doesn't mean it sucks by any means. Maybe in some ways they were ahead of their time.
Only reason I even knew about them then was because of their "Hey Old Timer" video being shown on Beavis & Butthead, and I think I saw this video once late at night. Apparently(according to what people mentioned before in the comments), they weren't as well promoted by their record company.
Ridiculously great! I've always loved this song! Retreat from The Sun is one of my all-time favorite albums. Criminally underrated! I used to have the biggest Petra crush back in the day. I hope this amazing band tours again soon! It's been so long since I have seen them live! Love That Dog!!
Wow the singer sounds eerily similar to Liz Phair! I never knew about this band until I read some comments on some The Rentals videos. This is my first time hearing them and they sound great! Another great band from the 90's I missed out on. Better late than never I guess.
I saw this band live in 1995 when they toured with Foo Fighters... can't remember any songs but I remember they rocket that violin with a wah-wah at the stage.
it was 1996..I saw That Dog w/ Foo Fighters at the American Theater March 26, 1996. That Dog toured w/ Weezer in 1995 in support of Totally Crushed Out and the Blue Album. I was there also
@@Onlypcgaming I saw Weezer in 1995 but that dog was not supporting. Instead, Weezer was opening up for Lush. I was there to see Lush and made it a point to get to the venue before Weezer started because I wanted to know what all the hoopla about Weezer was. Within 10 seconds of them starting "My Name Is Jonas", I knew exactly what they were talking about. The contrast of intensity between the clean-ish intro and the wall of crunchy sound of the first two lyrical lines pretty much sealed the deal for me right then and there.
I almost saw them but should have left my apartment earlier and should have rode my bike from Marietta to the Masquerade instead of taking the damn bus. I would have made it in just under an hour if I had treated it like a workout, the bus took almost two. I got there as the Foo Fighters were starting their second song and missed both that dog and The Amps. I had heard a couple of that dog tracks and owned The Amps "Pacer" LP. I did say hi to Kim Deal I was walking past her bus and she was getting on it.
I have, and always will love That Dog. So. Frickin'. GOOD! Everyone loves the Haden sisters, but how about some love for Anna? She's terrific! Also, I was so lucky to have seen them live on the tour for this album (opening for Matthew Sweet) because their harmonies live are EVEN BETTER. Holy crap, some of the best I've ever heard live...right up there with Jess & Holly from Lucius.
I can say with absolute 100% certainty the musicianship of this group, both core members and the people they played with live at times was serious professional top level playing. :)
I had this album in the '90s before I moved to the UK and left my CD collection with my parents. I was googling the lyrics for months trying to remember what the song or band was called and so pleased I found it!
As someone who would consider 90s music as my favorite genre, I'm surprised this band went under my radar. Just discovered them through the opening title song for the show Yellowjackets
There's many bands who should be very appreciative to the show BTVS. I would never know of half these cool bands/songs. I instantly knew there was some kind of connection with this band and The Rentals.
That is a very good ear! For a few years there was a great club scene in LA. Lots of collaborations, great bills for shows. It was all in a way centered on the mid to late 90's "Power Pop" vibe. Many of these bands influenced each other so the fact you made that connection is impressive and there are a lot of great stories and great music developed in the culture created by those bands. Not all made it big but they all made cool music and were part of what made that time and place special.
I saw this band on the second stage for the Y100 Feztival in Camden NJ, 1997. It had been so long since this show, OR since I had even heard this song, that I had to look up the lineup of bands just to see if I could find this song again! Found, and it's still an amazing track!
ahhh, the magickal 90's. i wrote a love letter to rachel haden and gave it to her at the weezer tribute show for mykel and carli (their 'biggest fans' and head of the weezer fanclub who died in a tragic car accident) at the palace theater in los angeles in 1997. i'm a dork. i miss the fucking 90's.
I heard this on the Power Pop station on the long-defunct Launchcast Radio over 10 years ago and I’ve been hopelessly infatuated with it ever since. It makes me wish I was old enough to be a teenager in the ‘90s.
Tbh this is actually my favorite song from them but i feel retreat from the sun is prolly my favorite album from that dog for aye mowt of the songs seemed to be dialed up by a 10
I loved this band so long ago. Anna Waronker's husband, Steven McDonald, is the bassist for OFF! [The only way for that dog. & OFF! might share a bill is at some stupid festival (which LA seems to have plenty of them).]
How did I miss this? Gee, I'm only 26 years too late to the party. VERY cool song! I definitely need to check out the album. BTW, a little fascinating genealogy, from Wikipedia: "Anna Jeanette Waronker is an American singer-songwriter, composer, and producer best known as the frontwoman of That Dog. She is the daughter of producer Lenny Waronker and actress and musician Donna Loren, the sister of session drummer Joey Waronker, and is married to Steven Shane McDonald of Melvins and Redd Kross." Quite the credentials.
Fell in love with these girls at a Counting Crows concert @ the VA Beach Amphitheater.... They were paid absolutely zero attention. Why? Because people only love what they have been trained to like. And yes that 99% means you... hate the radio
I used to go to shows 30% to check out the headliner, but 70% to check out the openers in hopes that I discovered some awesome gems that had been overlooked. Sadly, I never saw this group, live. This would have been a great find.
Someone dropped the ball in promoting these ladies it seems. This is high quality indie pop/rock confection and their more aggressive power pop is also killer.

Have you heard the whole album? It’s pretty bad. There’s maybe one other decent song.
It's not as good as their previous releases but it's still a nice album. It's not "pretty bad" unless you hate angular, quirky alt-rock.
@@Kuato Their first couple of albums were loaded with tracks that were top notch. I also said, "it seems". It could have been other factors but I wouldn't doubt it if their label said, "Very nice, the critics love you but how do we sell this?"

good job
I'm just trying to wake up from this 2020's nightmare and go back to the 90's. Glorious times.
AWESOME song... along with “Minneaaaap-o-lis!” 🙂.
MJS Bring back the good music, sad most singers don't have bands anymore.
This entire album is fantastic.
I told my stereo to store it in RAM
It's one of my favorites of all time and I've only met one person who knew who they are.
Great under-appreciated band, one of my favorites. I had a serious crush on the Hayden girls, especially the bassist when I was a young man.
Y'all remember when great pop songs had loud guitars in them? Yeah, those were the days.
“Power pop”, yep. I miss it.
Beabadoobee is pretty good and she's influenced by them
@@troy8420 shes more of a indie, clean type but still alright
I remember when leftists shut the fuck up and just wrote songs.
Saw them at CBGBs and the place was bumping and packed I just am so annoyed they never got more recognition

This takes me way back. These guys ROCKED. Highly underrated and overlooked.
The energy here is so very clean and representative of its time. Riffs for awareness? riffs for life
One of the greatest power-pop groups... ever. The new album is amazing.
@TETCOM Petra and yes
I have been looking for this song for 22 years!!!
I'm a 90's kid, so I love this song! It is so 90's, and really captures that era beautifully
Yep. To make this even more awesomely 90s, I discovered this video in an episode of Beavis and Butthead.
hotgirlsarehot me too!! Good call
Love Anna, Love Petra, Love Rachel, Love Tony
This is one of the greatest songs ever written.
Let's not get carried away lol.
Brevity is the soul of regret?
The entire CD is so catchy!
Charlie raised some talented daughters
Ugh! They deserve so much more recognition
1997 was THE year for one hit wonders

2022 and STILL rockin' That Dog, and STILL huge celebrity crush on Petra!
This has to be the most 90's video ever made.

I could listen to it again and again... And Anna looks great.
I loved these guys. So, so underrated.
Only one of them is a guy, the other 3 are ladies.
I had this album in the '90s before I moved to the UK and left my CD collection with my parents. I was googling the lyrics for months trying to remember what the song or band was called and so pleased I found it!
It fr be like that like I be memorizing certain key phrases in lyrics and try to search em up usually it works
One of the best songs ever written! I love the whole CD! Awesome Band!

so good, that dog. are brilliant
the music video reminds me of growing up in the 00s
and also barbie
Yeah same

I was at that show too!👍
You don't need to apostrophize "90's". You didn't use it as a contraction or possessive.
I heard this on the Power Pop station on the long-defunct Launchcast Radio over 10 years ago and I’ve been hopelessly infatuated with it ever since. It makes me wish I was old enough to be a teenager in the ‘90s.
times are passing so fast that made me so depressed
the moog in this song always gets me
love them. always have.
Still in love with this Band....I can't let go of you.
Never ever took out on
The ..u know what we love it like this..the mistreatment.... good song
My thoughts exactly...that dog is rad
that dog. The Rentals Weezer - They were big collaborators in the early to mid 90s. Great sounds.
Off one of my favorite albums ever!
Tbh this is actually my favorite song from them but i feel retreat from the sun is prolly my favorite album from that dog for aye mowt of the songs seemed to be dialed up by a 10
This is a great tune and I love the subtle video too. Hadens you are very talented songwriters and players / singers!
Young people seemed much more fun back then.
I was in high school 😊, I was cool
Because we were! :)
The first time I heard this song was on a CD that had a bunch a singles of bands and this was the only song I liked on it. That was 16 years ago.
One of the biggest musical crimes of the 90's was that they didn't become huge. At least those of us who knew, knew.
A true gem of the 90’s. Love to know what they are doing now
Pretty underrated band from the 1990’s. Got to see them open for Beck (1994 i think) and the Foo Fighters after they released their first album.
That's actually really cool!
Great music and harmonies!
Loved it then, love it still to this day.
This needs more views. Under appreciated.
thanks, and well said!!
great single...great LP too...
CLASSIC🎼❤🎉👍
This is the soundtrack to my puberty
time for a that dog reunion :P
You nailed it.
Ah, the 90's..........
anna is gorgeous and a good singer..this band was so over looked. just sad
Shane O'Mack shes hot
Might've had something to do with being the worst-named band in history
She's disgusting, can't reach a note and the band sucks. Always good to have a dad in the biz, though.

They sang this song on an episode of Oddville, MTV.
Geek rock done correctly!
I would love to see them live in 2018!
the 13th cd I ever bought
Great album, great band
That Dog rules! RFTS is one of my favorite albums. a classic!
I love That Dogz muzic clipz, thanx 4 the high quality upload :)

the weird thing is, Millenials are 40 now (at least the oldest ones)
The Muffs + Veruca Salt does not = That Dog
DHC+Save Ferris=Hardly Maybe Not

hooray for obscure indie band names long before obscure indie band names were cool
