hi. thanks for doing just what I needed to see. As an older lady living alone I lose the motivation to make any kind of meal. I live on toast, soup and a bit of fruit. Today I remembered my mum used to buy tinned stewing steak, but when I read the reviews for morrisons, sainsburys and princes they made me retch! The reviews mentioned huge lumps of gristle, fat and VEINS !! That was my plan for a proper little meal of meat and veg gone west. Then I went to utube and found you....I am really grateful for your method of testing. I think you said Tesco and Asda the best, so when I can get hold of some I will definitely try it. Thanks again. 😊
Years ago the government decided to give away tins of cooked beef from the beef mountain from the EU. There was also butter and cheese from what I can remember. We did get a couple of these cans of beef and I think it was ok, we ate it anyway. We could do with mountains of stuff today with what is happening in the world. It’s strange isn’t what happens sometimes.
I put a tin of stewed steak ( Aldi ) in my stew and dumplings , never used anything else . My mum uses it like you did with a pastry lid , both lovely . I have noticed tinned meats have shot up in price recently !
Hi Gareth. Thanks for another brill review. What a great idea. Every one of those stews had their pros and cons but all looked good. It's really good that you are showing people how to cook easy meals from scratch on a low budget. Keep up the spot on work. Best wishes from Scotland.
Brilliant video gareth and steak pie chips and peas pure heaven and as soon as you opened the cans the aldi one was onto a looser and I don't mind tinned steak but the thicker and more broken down the better do you remember Tyne Brand tinned meat that was nice minced beef and onion and steak and onion both brilliant with chips or mash and vegetables 👍👍🥩🥩🥧🥧
When I was in college I'd have a tin of princess stewed steak and tinned potatoes with tinned peas and carrots . I'd make dinner for 2 days and loved it . Great review Gareth buddy . 👏
You might like the Stockwell version from Tesco £1.75, Gaz. I wouldn't choose that pastry as it's got margarine, not all butter. Otherwise, an interesting review of mis-labelled Pedigree Chum 😂
just had a cleaning fit in the kitchen and yes i did my toaster (barrow lad starts a craze fer emptying toasters lol) its had bread in it every day for at least 2 years i opened it on a baking tray and you can imagine the amount that dropped out of it, hopefully it will still work !!.
Another great video Gareth. I always use the Tesco one as I have been happy with it , I add potatoes and onions and shortcrust pastry always a success with my Husband. Lovely to see a longer video.

This is excellent review Gareth. I have tried Princes years ago and it was grizzly, so never had that again, nor any of them. The finished pie looks tops pal. Years ago, if I had a pie, I would put Victoria’s chutney all over the crust after it was cooked and let it rest for a minute, game changer! I love beetroot and would have that with tomatoes too. Keep up your great work, all the best to you and yours.
Hi Gaz..i saw that smart price stewed steak the other week whilst in asda, but bottled it when i saw how cheap it was and went for the princess instead, it werent too shabby as a pie filling, but after seeing your down too earth honest review, next time im heading for the smart price option..Cheers Harry
Prior to watching the vid I thought good luck finding the meat but it seems there was actually meat present. Pre prepared pies usually consists of pastry and gravy and very little meat
I know it's now 5 months on since the review but, I've bought a deep fill pie maker. I love the short crust pastry with the puff pastry lid with Princes beef filling. I sometimes go for a chicken curry filling which works great. If you see this - have a good one mate.
I had asdas ultimate burgers last night. Absolutely massive. Pack of two for £4. I weighed them before cooking and they were 3/4 of a lb each. Didn't shrink much at all. Because they took so long to cook they dried out a bit but we're still nice. I melted some extra mature cheddar on top and they were lovely. Be interested to see you cook them and what you think.
Fantastic and comprehensive review, sometimes stuff in a tin works better, you've done the lot there lad; Princes run with the hares and the hounds on prices but a very independent balanced view, love the slight fluffs, Saturday Kitchen Live couldn't do it better
Short crust is my favourite pastry i do a base and top for my pies on a oven proof dinner size plate also i love stewed steak pies and some times with potatoe's happy days. Great review Gareth.
Can’t stand Puff Pastry. Can only eat shortcrust and only on occasion. Not a pastry fan to be honest. Having said that I do on occasion crave a pie. Always hand made from scratch though.
Thank you for reviewing the tins of stewed steak a couple of years ago. I’ve been trying the different supermarket tins of steak and some are a bit cheaper but don’t have a lot of steak pieces. I’ve noticed that the cheaper tins obviously have more fat and less steak, so you should pay that little bit extra for better quality. It’s about £2.50 for supermarket own brand near me.
I used to buy the Tyne brand years ago, they were nice. I buy the prince's now, I did buy a couple of tins of dewhurst the butcher's brand. I opened it up, it was steak in jelly, looked more like dog food, I wondered if they had the right liable on it, cooked it, it smelt terrible, tasted it, it was terrible, buy anything except dewhurst. I will try the Tesco's, as there things are usually quite nice, thanks Gareth.
Cheers buddy great review, The pie looks good mate .made me feel hungry, was the meat warmed up when you tried them all ( I just wonder ) also I like your plates great for curry’s & Stews etc , saves it running all over the dining table . Can’t wait to make my pie , I going to add some mushrooms and some red wine . Thanks Gareth your a star 💫👍🍻👍🍻👍🍻👍
Interesting one this one Gareth, Even with 3 tins of smart price the filling is costing £5.25 + the pastry, say £6 in total,…or you could buy a ready made family steak and gravy pie from all the supermarkets at various pricing and hit and miss filling quantities,….I guess by making it yourself, you know with a family of 4,you will all get a decent portion to get down your grid 😂,great review as always, take care and ATB 👍
yes well it started off as a comparison with steak then i thought id make a pie and use up some old pastry in the fridge I had. it made 4 good portions so went down well.
I use one tin of steak and it's easily enough to make a large pie - especially if bulked out with mushrooms, potatoes, carrots etc. He basically made a pot pie here, which means he could fit a vast amount of meat in, which would be way more meat than you'd get in a ready made family pie. You can make a large encased pie with one tin like this, which would feed 3-4.
My wife and I (strangely) love Fray Bentos (no meat) Steak & Kidney tinned pies, we add a tin of Sainsbury's Stewed Steak, adding an Oxo cube and a dash of Sherry - tasty :)
The last can of tinned steak I had was back in the mid 70s. When I tipped it out there was a piece of meat with a blood vessel the size of a bicycle inner tube attached (slight exaggeration there!) Put me right off, and haven't touched any since!
Great video. I used to buy the prince's one I did once buy a cheaper one but never again. It was full of fat and gristle. When I used to eat meat I always once a week made meat and potato pie but always had hendersons relish to put on it. My 4 sons are wanting me to make another. I guess now I'm better I will make them one x
You got a gift of Idahoan mashed potato recently and this would also work as a topping instead of pastry. I only use the Idahoan Buttery Mash, which is very tasty and mixes up in an instant compared to boiling and mashing potatoes. Going on the appearance of each can as you opened them, my immediate preference was for the Bramwells, because it was thinner in consistency. I wouldn't be keen on eating test portions of any of them cold, though. By the way, if you have not used the Idahoan mash before, use slightly more boiling water than stated on the packet. However, I measure out half the packet and vacuum seal the other half for another meal, since I'm only cooking for one, so it will be trial and error for others. Definitely stir in a knob of butter when mixing, and pour the powder INTO the water, not the other way round.
instant mash really? one of worse things I've ever tried lol but then it's been many years since I last had some, have things dramatically improved? maybe I'll give this Idahoan a go out of curiosity...
@@danimayb the Idahoan in the red packet (£1.00 when it's on offer) is worlds apart from anything else. Yes, it's more expensive than cheaper versions, but there's a good reason for that. The garlic one in the purple packet is delicious.
@@danimayb With Idahoan it has improved dramatically. I'm amazed at how good it tastes for packet mashed potato. To make fresh mashed potatoes you first need some decent potatoes. Then you have to peel them, boil them, and finally mash them up with the right amount of salt, pepper and butter. Certainly not instant in any way. The Idahoan range on the other hand gives you mashed potato in about one minute.

Not sure about mixing 2 different tins of steak.a bit long drawn out but think separate pies was the way to go..I did the lide one was OK but very runny.did pastry on the bottom as well using lidle puff pastry.but should have cooked base first before adding steak as the base was not cooked enough.your doing a great job and love your reviews. Got the Iceland curry mix .almost spot on. But got the ratios wrong .was like glue.think one tub will do 4 curry sauce mixes. Keep up the good work 👏
Ok so you made me lol again!! Princess 😂😂😂 I always like to keep a tin of stewed steak in the cupboard as it always makes a quick easy meal 🤗👍 and yes I usually buy Princes 😉
If I'm doing these stewed steak tins, (I use Tesco) I normally empty the contents into a sieve and wash under a cold tap to drain off all the clag. ... I use two cans and then warm in the microwave and add some Bisto gravy granules with some course black pepper. ... It tastes much better without the stodge, then serve over some mashed potato - heaven on a plate mate.
Well I was a bit shocked didn’t think any of these brands would have been any good , but I think by yo mixing them up a bit you made a really good job ! Well done G that pie didn’t look to bad in the end. Great stuff!🤩🙏🏽💙

I've eaten Asda Just Essentials tinned Stewed Steak several times, both as a pie filling and served with potatoes and veg. I find it more than acceptable. It tastes great to me......the gravy especially seems very tasty, and the steak is really tender. I wasn't shocked when the Asda one pipped the rest..... The inevitable question is - if we all start buying Asda Just Essentials stuff, will the price go up, or would the alternatives come down?
Gareth with you doing all this cooking you will be giving women ideas that we can cook a meal for them lol, as for the pie I'm sure desperate Dan would be proud of you .
Thanks for the review, Gareth. I've just eaten a chicken and pulled pork pie that I bought from my local Heron Foods, it is one of their "Now or Never" range. Their are two frozen pies in the pack weighing 650g, so each pie weighs 325g and there is plenty of meat in them. Another variety in the range is chicken and mushroom, they are well worth trying before they sell out and become unavailable in the future.
Hi Gareth, I hope Mary Berry didn't hear that you are still looking for a second job, as she will be shaking in her boots. At least the pie did look home made and not a standard supermarket effort. Definitely looking forward to your McEwans Champion Ale review on your other channel, I hope I have not built it up too much mate.
Hey G man👍 sorry mate I thought times were so tight that you were taste testing and reviewing pet food😂I have horrid memories of tinned mince and 'stewing steak' from my childhood, grim and rough but each to their own regarding tastes and preferences. Enjoy your holiday buddy ✌️🍻
Wow surprised you choose the Aldi one (not that i have tasted it yet) but on a tight budget as we all are now surpried with your other vids how often the lower priced tins come up tops !!!!
Your pie looked lovely Gareth, I've used that pastry before, it comes in handy. The only one of the stewing steaks I have used in the past was the prince's one. I found it ok
Great review gaz dont no why some people snobby about claggy pastry lol..i love it soft ..that pie looked scrummy.keep the videos comming garath you make alot of peoples day😉😉
Got 4 tins of the asda one as a substitute for tuna!?!? No idea lol, anyway I made a pie with 2 of them and I agree with you Gareth it was very nice for tinned stuff! Great review buddy!
1 tin of cooked steak 1 tin of peas 1 tin of new potatoes pepper to taste crusty bread of the condemned shelf, BOOM truckers one pot winter tea, all the best kid, many thanks Michael and Elvis the dog 😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Re the 'toaster'. I always recommend if you are buying one, ALWAYS go for one with a pull out 'crumb tray'. Many of the cheaper ones don't have them and that can cause problems with getting rid of the crumbs et later. 2. NEVER ever stick anything METAL into the toaster to ie retrieve broken off bits of bread et ! and YES it happens!! 😗Now, back to that stewing 'steak'. Question is HOW much is FRESH stewing beef ?? We won't use TINNED stewing beef et You've pointed out one of the reasons 'the PRICE'! Also tinned PROCESSED meats ??? BUT all in all you done good ! It's always interesting to do comparisons even for those who wouldn't touch them et ... 👍Oh and I forgot to tell you re the so called 'Cornish pasties' review. Look up the term = 'mechanically separated meat'.
me and my partner watch all the time after seeing your plates we have bought 5 got 4 left one had a accident but they are fantastic we got ours from tesco £2.50 ea bargain!
My husband does the shopping, and he always buys Princes. He makes a big heap of mash, and pours the steak on top. I prefer buying the meat from my butcher to be honest, but the tinned stuff is okay for a quick meal.
I’m on my first bru of the day and you’ve got an ale on the go with a pie & chips 😂 also quick ask .. can you do a pizza video of all different ones ? 😊 Great video again 🇬🇧 🤜🏻🤛🏻
I have a pie maker that I got from Aldi for £15. Used it to make pies, quiches and poached eggs so far. Not got round yet to seeing if it will do scotch pancakes. 😁

Aldi's looked like soup! Gutted, Aldi usually win these side by sides. Doing a shop in Aldi tomorrow as well, fully expected to be grabbing a can when I hit play, I'll now be leaving it on the shelf. Cheers Gareth, £1.79 saved 👍

What is ship steak?
I always think it smells of dog food when you open the can and its cold ;)
@@jay71512 It was the brand on the tin, they sell it in Morrisons but I haven't had any in ages so don't know if they still sell it.
@Bald Foodie Guy, you should do Harry Ramsden's 6 Jumbo Battered Cod Fillet Fish Fingers (from Iceland)
cheers Rob
The problem with tinned Stewed Steak is that you have to watch out for tubes.
Arteries lol
I got a tin of Tesco stewed steak I put it in a warburtons thin in to the air fryer to crisp very tasty 😋 I think I told you this last week 🤔🤔 😊
Sounds great!
I’d happily eat that dinner😋😋
I've eaten Asda Just Essentials tinned Stewed Steak several times, both as a pie filling and served with potatoes and veg. I find it more than acceptable. It tastes great to me......the gravy especially seems very tasty, and the steak is really tender. I wasn't shocked when the Asda one pipped the rest..... The inevitable question is - if we all start buying Asda Just Essentials stuff, will the price go up, or would the alternatives come down?
That pie looks the dogs bollox mate, brilliant stuff love it.
cheers Billy
Gareth with you doing all this cooking you will be giving women ideas that we can cook a meal for them lol, as for the pie I'm sure desperate Dan would be proud of you .
Pie looks fantastic Gaz, well done, great review again ☺️ x
Thanks so much 😊
Give me slice look. Lovely
Cheers David
Hi Gareth, I hope Mary Berry didn't hear that you are still looking for a second job, as she will be shaking in her boots. At least the pie did look home made and not a standard supermarket effort. Definitely looking forward to your McEwans Champion Ale review on your other channel, I hope I have not built it up too much mate.
haha cheers John yes thats coming mate, all the best.
Baldy is a top guy he’s funny but not trying be funny I love it, keep up the good work
Thank you 👌👌👌
Hey G man👍 sorry mate I thought times were so tight that you were taste testing and reviewing pet food😂I have horrid memories of tinned mince and 'stewing steak' from my childhood, grim and rough but each to their own regarding tastes and preferences. Enjoy your holiday buddy ✌️🍻
yes times have changed since you were young mate. Its tasty now but if you have been scarred for life, i understand that.
Wow surprised you choose the Aldi one (not that i have tasted it yet) but on a tight budget as we all are now surpried with your other vids how often the lower priced tins come up tops !!!!
Thanks for doing this very worthwhile review Gareth
My pleasure!
Not sure if you have tried them from Asda hot & spicy chicken breast fillet burgers frozen really nice
Your pie looked lovely Gareth, I've used that pastry before, it comes in handy. The only one of the stewing steaks I have used in the past was the prince's one. I found it ok
Thank you Sandra. Yes I enjoyed it. 😉
Great review gaz dont no why some people snobby about claggy pastry lol..i love it soft ..that pie looked scrummy.keep the videos comming garath you make alot of peoples day😉😉
Thanks pal, yes I love it 😋😋👌
Good job Garath , not made a pie in years I’ve forgotten how easy and tasty they are
so good
Got 4 tins of the asda one as a substitute for tuna!?!? No idea lol, anyway I made a pie with 2 of them and I agree with you Gareth it was very nice for tinned stuff! Great review buddy!
Never heard of beetroot with pie have to try that one day 😊
It's so good!
It's considered a luxury in war torn Ukraine 😳
@@robbiekop7 yes sorry didn't mean to sound ungrateful for food 😕
1 tin of cooked steak 1 tin of peas 1 tin of new potatoes pepper to taste crusty bread of the condemned shelf, BOOM truckers one pot winter tea, all the best kid, many thanks Michael and Elvis the dog 😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Love your enthusiasm trying to stretch your pastry Gareth. We've all been there. Great viewing. 🤩
Thank you
Re the 'toaster'.
Brilliant Becky 👍👍
My husband does the shopping, and he always buys Princes. He makes a big heap of mash, and pours the steak on top. I prefer buying the meat from my butcher to be honest, but the tinned stuff is okay for a quick meal.
sounds good
Hi I like the smart price one it’s the one I use thank you ❤️👍🙏
Good choice!
34k subs woooop lovely bit of food lovely pie and pasty
Thank you 😋
Sprinkle some frozen peas, before you put the lid on, for an extra kick use some Worcester sauce.
Good idea
Nice video.Gareth.
It’s amazing that some of the cheap brands a better than the expensive ones.. l find that a lot..
yes pretty good to be honest.
Should make a pie with the bramwell Irish stew. That's banging that
i used to work for princes, they also make the Tesco, asda etc.. they just change the labels!
Why is there an apparent diffrence in this comparison then?
I've just purchased myself a couple of tins of lidls newgate stewed steak.. we are htting a strong 75%.
Oh great pal
Prince one in morrisons is over £3 a tin now 😲 crazy. Will have to tey the asda one
I got some of the Irish stew the other day, it was lovely. I fancy doing a meat and potato pie now.
I’m on my first bru of the day and you’ve got an ale on the go with a pie & chips 😂 also quick ask .. can you do a pizza video of all different ones ? 😊
Great video again 🇬🇧 🤜🏻🤛🏻
have a look in my pizza playlist and comparison, ive done it.
I have a pie maker that I got from Aldi for £15. Used it to make pies, quiches and poached eggs so far. Not got round yet to seeing if it will do scotch pancakes. 😁
Hello, thank you for an honest, no nonsense taste test on all your products, sausages and the steak tin steak meat. It’s nice to have some and it’s not fancy but it’s down to earth and tries to save all of us money. Thank you😊 15:43
I appreciate that!
Aldi's looked like soup! Gutted, Aldi usually win these side by sides.
Doing a shop in Aldi tomorrow as well, fully expected to be grabbing a can when I hit play, I'll now be leaving it on the shelf.
Cheers Gareth, £1.79 saved 👍
yes just the flavour put me off thats all.

Cheers Steven. Yes going to review it soon going on other channel Staying Inn Beer Reviews 🍻🍻👍
