Such a nice price considering 1tb ssd and 32gb ram ! Lookinf forward to test it in 3 weeks!
I can confirm that in Canada, the starting price is just $1869.99. Once the sale comes up and with a student discount it should be around just $1400CAD, which is pretty good.
After doing a lot of research that kept me awake for two nights, I decided to buy the Slim 5 14" (Amd 7840HS/ RTX 4060/ 512SSD/ 32GB RAM) laptop. I chose the option of no OS to save some money, but I upgraded the RAM. I ordered it from the Lenovo website and customized it myself. I paid €1537/ $1.674 US dollar, which included an ecoupon discount of €258 and an instant saving of €54. I had it shipped to Ireland. One of the reasons I picked this laptop was that it had lower fan noise and temperature than other brands with similar specs. This means I can play a game in class without attracting too much attention 😂. I also watched some videos that showed that the laptop battery lasted longer with AMD. It also had better performance when not in performance mode. I liked that it had ports on the back but what i didn't like was that the side usb c was not the Thunderbolt 4.0 type C.
Excellent review, I need a high spec work computer due to heavy files, excel and email accounts and for occasional gaming on 2nd SSD to keep separate windows accounts that can’t access each other. I need something with no RGB and not screaming gaming PC during a business meeting with portability, light weight and “no brick” changer. This almost checks it all. I ordered in 🇨🇭 for 1300 CHF inc tax with same specs. Great value!
Mainly in comments to test out (aka show off) my members badge. Great video as always! Love your approach Jarrod on reviews and general vibe of the channel. Appreciate all your and your partner's work!
I really appreciate that you show us your experience from Linux as well, I have never seen any other reviewer doing it. The things you mentioned like shortcuts track pad etc. seems to be working for many laptops these days, however there are still some areas which it is very hard to predict and that is the battery life. Some laptops are not optimized for Linux and have terribly less battery life compared to same laptop with Windows. Can you also please check battery life on Linux for future reviews?
It baffles me how aussie techtubers put so much work in their reviews compared to jays and linus "penny-dreadful-slop" content. Its like Elliot from Internet Today says: "people do like their slop".
holy shet mang! I've been waiting for Legion 14inch review. And Jarrod to be one of the earliest (if not the first) who review this beast! man, what a beautiful day~
Thank you so much for this! This will be part of my list because of the portability. I know portability for me will be important because I travel a lot and I'm a small person--this is why the first generation g14 has been my daily driver over the past few years. But I know I love lenovo's keyboards and build quality. The other thing I was thinking of getting was the razer blade 14 (great review there too btw!), but I heard horror stories of Razer support from colleagues. But yeah this will be on my short list when it comes out. Can't wait to try it myself! thanks so much!
This laptop has been the best decision I have ever made. It's really quiet and efficient for a 14". It literally holds everything you can think of, and even has a full on sd slot! Not that anyone really needs it, but it also runs so cool when casually doing non-intensive things. The OLED display is probably the best thing about this laptop and even though the speakers are not as good as the G14, it's definitely better than the other lower end speakers on the Slim 5 16" model! I personally think it does an amazing job on mids and highs, but lacks bass. Nothing a bluetooth headset can't fix though. I love the slightly beefier body over the G14. I don't feel any heat on standby, and with the G14 it would idle at 54c which was too warm for my taste. You should definitely give this bad boy a try!! I love mine and ended up opting for a Ryzen 7, 32gb ram model since the ram was soldered... which is the only Con I can give to this laptop lol...
It doesn't have upgradeable RAM, doesn't have ethernet port. OLED display looks nice, but its response rate is useless when you are forced to play on wifi connection
Picked it up for $1050 with 16gb ram and installed my own SSD. 16gb is plenty for 99% of users. I love the quiet mode and it maxes out just about everything I want to play. A huge jump over the 1660ti in my Acer. It is not silent like my MBP 14, but it a great companion. No complaints. Also Lenovo's warranty extension with acciendent forgiveness is a great value for $50 ish dollars.
...as always, spot on review. 08:39 would be such a big visual perk to have whole keyboard lit in the color of the current/actual running mode, instead just a pwr ring.
I originally got the G14 4060 but after Best Buy had the slim 14 on sale for the same discounted price I had to swap it out. I do not regret it. You lose the 1 free memory slot but gain extra m.2. 16gb is enough but more storage is a plus. The Slim 14 also runs much cooler than the g14 and that oled… I cannot go back to ips after looking at oled. I originally posted G14 or go home but after using the slim 14, Jarrod you were 💯 right and I should have listened. My first Legion.
I already have this Model (Im in Germany). I`m coming from a MacBook, so take all of my comments with that in mind: The Screen looks awesome, although I do need to stay close to the max brightness in most scenarios. The speakers are not great (compared to even the old M1 Macbook Air). Keyboard is awesome. Trackpad is finde, but not comparable to the MacBook. I have only played Destiny 2 and Anno 1800 so far. Both run absolutely fine and especially Destiny looks crazy good on that OLED screen. I also run Zwift on battery power, which is fine, but drains the battery pretty quickly. The biggest issue I currently have is the USB-charging. I`m used to simply plug in any usb-c charger ans the laptop will accept it. I hoped I would be able to run light workloads off of a 65w USB-C monitor, but that doesn`t seem to work, as the laptop won`t charge at all when connected to it. All in all a pretty great laptop.
Man you’re the first tech review channel ive seen that included latencymon on your test. Truly a life saver. Especially to music producers/ creators that utilizes audio in general. Really appreciate it! Kinda mad i havent found your channel earlier😂
I just wanted to say thank you for your fantastic laptop reviews! I'm currently in the market for a new laptop, and I would love to see your take on the Asus ROG Flow X16 2023. I trust your opinions, and it would help me a lot in my buying decision. Keep up the great work!
Another great addition to the 14" gaming laptop world but the apparent absence of USB 4, 1200p/1600p IPS options, premium dGPU options and front facing speakers hurt the proposition a bit.
@@derekhatake OLED sucks at lower resolution because of the subpixel matrix ruining Windows text (watch any Monitors Unboxed video on 1440p OLED monitors) and IPS is cheaper, more durable and allowing better battery life with a lot of word processing and web browsing. With the dinky RTX 4060 choking at 1080p in recent games, anything more might be redundant for games and 3d rendering apps. User choice is always best.
Hey Jarrod! Great review mate! I bought my last 2 Metabox laptops based on your reviews. Was looking for something more travel friendly. Just purchased this one! Keep up the awesome work mate :)
Your videos are amazing, but there's one small correction: you should not represent "infinite" contrast as 1:1; that's not how it works. When you write, for example, 1000:1, you are talking about the contrast ratio, which means that whites are 1000 times brighter than blacks. If you write 1:1, it implies that whites have the same brightness as blacks, which doesn't make any sense. The contrast ratio for OLEDs would be infinite to one, so it may be better to just write "infinite contrast."
When measuring screen brightness for an HDR screen you should use a 10%ish window instead of full field. I measured this laptop hitting 740 nits at a 10% window which is similar to an lg c1, fairly impressive. Oled struggles in full field and full field kind of doesn't matter anyway so it's a little weird to see a 400 nit being reported. Games don't just have white at max luminance.
of course, the only case when a laptop is glossy is when it's OLED... why aren't glossy ips a thing on laptops? I have a glossy ips monitor and it looks amazing.
Looks sweet. I used legion y540 with i7 9th and GTX 1660ti. Really enjoyed it. I managed to sold it after 3years and just lost like 100$ on that. Now I moved for a ThinkPad E14 G3. If ThinkPad would have similar specs to this legion 14 I would go for it
Jarrod, Great videos. Very thorough. US price in early February 2024 is $1479.99 but is on sale at BB for $1179.99. Your website is of great help in shopping for deals. Thank you for alerting me to the fact that this laptop does not have expandable RAM. I think I may go for a Legion Pro 5i which is on sale at Costco for $1299 (i9, 32GB, 1TB, 4060). Please do more videos on Eluktronics. I had never heard of them prior to seeing them on your website. Found an amazing machine for $1099 but am hesitant as there are so few reviews. Thank you again. One of the main advantige of this 14'' laptop is that screen is 14.5'' and I think it is perfect size, maybe next year we will see Slim 7 14'' too which should be better model, only thing I hesitate to by this is OLED burning problems.
Yeah a slim 7 14 will be a dream what I would love is a snappier keyboard with RGB, more GPU options and say certainly a better build quality the 7 series is known for.
I just got this with 32gb ram for 985 usd certified refurbished from Lenovo. The g14 with 32gb ram was 1699 use on sale! after taxes its like an $800 difference! And in the g14 review the 4070 is barely faster because it's limited to 90w tgp! I feel like I got a pretty good deal.

Oo, nice one! Many decisions I like, even 2 SDD slots... Only thing that is a pity imo is that iGPU is on non power-delivery usb-c. I love using one-port usb-c for work when I want to use integrated gpu to not overheat it unnecessarily.
@@tylerkrasavage5656 not like this, but in options you can set it to use iGPU only, dGPU is completely off. For non-gaming (or some specific tasks) this is very nice, less energy and heat. But many people want to use external monitors, and kind of one cable (usb-c dock) setup. For that you have to have usb-c with power delivery AND connected to iGPU.
I got the Lenovo Legion 5i pro 16". The only complaints I have is the charger is a bit big and the battery time should be a bit better, other than that its a beast of a laptop. Would be cool to have a sd card slot and the finger print sensor.
I am surprised that 14" model has ThinkPad like keyboard layout (PgUp/PgDn keys next to arrow keys) and 16" doesn't. I wish 16" had the same layout. Grrat review. Thank you!
(Almost) centered trackpad, important ports on the back, minimalist design. This will be a great laptop for clean desk setup. Especially for the one that prefers to put the laptop under the bigger monitor to utilize the laptop's built-in monitor.
Just bought mine. Get it on Monday - first ever gaming laptop. I have a solid 3080 PC, but wanted something to game on whenever I go on trips/am lazy in bed.
Regardless of preference putting a blurry antiglare filter over a high PPI oled screen shouldn't be a thing you're essentially negating the benefits and the blacks would look worse as well. I would have got this if it had a LAN port.
This looks like an excellent 14 laptop and the 2nd SSD is a huge yes, BUT please, Lenovo, add an option for matte screen on this model, glossy screens are so annoying !
ooof now I gotta pick, 16 or 14 inch... 14 gets better screen, 16 is more immersive, 14 gets better battery, 16 gets gets better upgradability, but I do like the numpad...
Seems that memory speed has been the deciding factor of who has the edge with the 4060 GPU onboard. That and most times the small variance in CPU temp with lower clocked units beating out higher clocked yet hotter chips. Thank you for all the fantastic information, Jarrod.
looks interesting however... It does not appear we get a 32GB option in the USA (unless the PSREF is wrong). Also, even in AUS you cannot choose the 7940HS AND 32GB memory. So the perf you are getting might be less if we are stuck with 16GB. Edit.. looks like we can also config 32GB with 7840HS
It very may well be wrong. I got a Wi-Fi 6 card in a Legion 7 in 2022. And it was BAD. That wasn't on the specs; Wi-Fi 6E was. That wasn't what I got. As for this laptop, there is a 32 GB option at time of purchase if you customize it.
Wow, I'm early! Just woke up to some doughnuts brought home, can't wait for this! Edit: Splendid! I actually would like a glossy screen, matte coats to me are more distracting and wash out colors, to me, that would be a waste of an oled screen.
A Lenovo Yoga/regular ideapad sized laptop but with a raw performance as same as Legion. Glad to see finally Lenovo do a compact gaming laptop like Asus did to their X13 & G14.
Which one would you recommend for gaming purposes and for my work "DBs and programing with Android Studio" Lenovo - Legion Pro 7i 16" WQXGA - Intel 14th Gen Core i9 32GB - RTX 4080 12GB - 2TB SSD or ASUS - ROG Zephyrus G16 (2024) 16" OLED 240Hz - Intel Core Ultra 9 - 32GB LPDDR5X - RTX 4080 - 1TB SSD
So I was on the hunt for a gaming laptop about a month or two ago… Lenovo has been around for a long time but I was leaning towards a Asus or MSI. I stumbled upon the Lenovo LOQ 16, which I believe you did a review on the 15 version. It has the exact same specs as this, a 7840hs and RTX 4060. It did have an extra NVME slot that I popped a 2TB in, came with a 1 TB. It also unlike this one had two SODIMM slots so I switched the ram from 16gb to 32gb. Between the ram and SSD I spent about an extra 200. My laptop retailed at around 1400, but on Lenovos website I caught a sale and a first time buyer discount and got it for 984 before tax. Being larger it gets better temps with a cooling pad I’ve rarely hit 80c, and only hit 80 in the most demanding of circumstances. It is an all plastic build, but to save the money it doesn’t bother me. Best laptop I’ve ever owned and I’ll probably go Lenovo next time, was a great experience all around.
Ngl, I almost want to cancel my Framework Laptop 16 order because of the screen, two SSD slots (the Framework really only has room for one and a second short slot), and the Nvidia GPU. Though I do like having upgradable RAM, a working fingerprint sensor in Linux, and Framework's modularity! Argh! 😬
I have the slim 7i 16". Not sure I could go down to using a 14" for gaming. The 16" screen is just that bit more immersive. That slight extra portability would be nice though. About half a kilo from the model I have.
I don't really get the argument about 14 inches being too small for gaming. Sure, if you're used to sitting 3ft away from a large gaming monitor, it's going to look smaller. But compared to my 65" TV at normal viewing distance playing console games, playing with my G14 on my lap gives a bigger apparent image, plus more vertical image due to the 16:10 ratio 🤷♂️

Thank you for your amazing review! I sold my Legion 5 Pro 3070 cause i travel a lot between Italy and Australia and i bought this Legion 14 at the Lonovo Australia estore for only 2050AUD with the discount !!
Do you buy this?
If I am not wrong I believe thunderbolt is only possible with intel cpus or Mac’s, but for AMD we could have usb gen 4 .
How did you custom order it? I I can't seem to do that
@@knight3599 you have to go on their Lenovo website. Chose the laptop and then options pop up to either add ram and customise it
Excellent review, I need a high spec work computer due to heavy files, excel and email accounts and for occasional gaming on 2nd SSD to keep separate windows accounts that can’t access each other. I need something with no RGB and not screaming gaming PC during a business meeting with portability, light weight and “no brick” changer. This almost checks it all. I ordered in 🇨🇭 for 1300 CHF inc tax with same specs. Great value!
Kind of tempted to get this for the OLED screen
wait until they make a model with a matte oled, the non-oled lenovo's already look so good in color it isn't worth the jump if you already own one.
Would be better if it was mini led

The OLED is incredible, I have this laptop and have had many others. I love this thing.

FINALLY I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR A 14” LEGION 😭
Such an excellent review on an excellent 14in laptop this year. well done! really makes me wanna grab the laptop!
It baffles me how aussie techtubers put so much work in their reviews compared to jays and linus "penny-dreadful-slop" content. Its like Elliot from Internet Today says: "people do like their slop".
Most comprehensive review I‘ve seen on this machine! Really enjoyed your meticulous approach :)
I've been waiting this laptop since 2 months ago, and FINALLY!!! thanks Jarrod
holy shet mang!

Have you done any native resolution gaming on it?
It doesn't have upgradeable RAM, doesn't have ethernet port. OLED display looks nice, but its response rate is useless when you are forced to play on wifi connection
....Bought the Framework 16. "Never buying another laptop again after this." Shit, this is tempting. Very tempting.
Dude, why am I in the same boat $1050 price, 16 gb ram, and came from a 1660 ti although my previous one was an hp omen 16.
How is the laptop so far?
I have been waiting for this since it was announced, definitely my favorite laptop of this gen so far...
...as always, spot on review.
Hows the battery for the slim vs the G14 in your experience?
I already have this Model (Im in Germany). I`m coming from a MacBook, so take all of my comments with that in mind:
The Screen looks awesome, although I do need to stay close to the max brightness in most scenarios.
Does the screen have vrr like Gsync or free sync?
Man you’re the first tech review channel ive seen that included latencymon on your test. Truly a life saver. Especially to music producers/ creators that utilizes audio in general. Really appreciate it! Kinda mad i havent found your channel earlier😂

Another great addition to the 14" gaming laptop world but the apparent absence of USB 4, 1200p/1600p IPS options, premium dGPU options and front facing speakers hurt the proposition a bit.
They are gonna probably come out with a premium version of this.
@@dalefrancis9414yea
why would you want an IPS screen?
@@derekhatake OLED sucks at lower resolution because of the subpixel matrix ruining Windows text (watch any Monitors Unboxed video on 1440p OLED monitors) and IPS is cheaper, more durable and allowing better battery life with a lot of word processing and web browsing. With the dinky RTX 4060 choking at 1080p in recent games, anything more might be redundant for games and 3d rendering apps. User choice is always best.

I'd like to see them offer it with a 64GB RAM option though, or socketed RAM, but overall, this seems like a good package.

Lenovo has a special in Aus. Picked this up for AUD $1999.00, note: It comes with 32GB of RAM.
I can't sacrifice Thunderbolt4 port. Lenovo should think about it again
Thanks so much for this review. I've literally been refreshing the Lenovo Legion Slim page every day to see when the 14" will start selling in the US.
Lenovo make some really good laptops 😊😊
I see a new Jarrod's video, I click the video! Great video as usual!
That is probably the best laptop up to date
Thanks for the video man❤
Your determination and dedication inspired me to make my own music bro, thankyou!
of course, the only case when a laptop is glossy is when it's OLED... why aren't glossy ips a thing on laptops? I have a glossy ips monitor and it looks amazing.
Looks sweet. I used legion y540 with i7 9th and GTX 1660ti. Really enjoyed it. I managed to sold it after 3years and just lost like 100$ on that. Now I moved for a ThinkPad E14 G3. If ThinkPad would have similar specs to this legion 14 I would go for it
How much battery life are you getting on the ThinkPad? With half brightness, Silent/Windows Battery Saver mode?
Yeah a slim 7 14 will be a dream

Oo, nice one! Many decisions I like, even 2 SDD slots...
Only thing that is a pity imo is that iGPU is on non power-delivery usb-c. I love using one-port usb-c for work when I want to use integrated gpu to not overheat it unnecessarily.
What do you mean? Does the laptop only use the dedicated GPU when plugged in?
Finally a laptop with no screen bleeding but what about the burning issues that are shown in the vantage software?? 😢
They're to help prevent it. It's standard with laptops with oled displays.

(Almost) centered trackpad, important ports on the back, minimalist design. This will be a great laptop for clean desk setup. Especially for the one that prefers to put the laptop under the bigger monitor to utilize the laptop's built-in monitor.
With the fingerprint scanner and oled screen it kind of feels like a slim 6 to me😂

I agree. But you can always add a matte screen protector
ooof now I gotta pick, 16 or 14 inch... 14 gets better screen, 16 is more immersive, 14 gets better battery, 16 gets gets better upgradability, but I do like the numpad...
Looking forward to the 50-series laptops next year. Going to step up from my 4080 laptop to a 5080 or 5090 one
Seems like a good alternative to the G14. I'll keep my eye on it.
Lonovo has some of the best, if not the best laptop keyboards.
Seems that memory speed has been the deciding factor of who has the edge with the 4060 GPU onboard. That and most times the small variance in CPU temp with lower clocked units beating out higher clocked yet hotter chips. Thank you for all the fantastic information, Jarrod.
This might be my dream laptop but damn the price is $1.5k 😭 might just go with a 14” Lenovo Pro Slim 7 for $950
looks interesting however...
I love the white backlighting on the keyboard. It's always so frustrating when they do RGB because it never works properly in Linux.

for much better performance and cooling, the legion
Oh and it has a usb a on the right side! Great for a mouse dongle or my laptop cooler when I’m gaming with a controller. Has two more on the back.
Argh! 😬
Still waiting for 18" version with maximum CPU performance and cooling.
It's crazy how the Acer Helios 300, is still holding up!!
Waiting for Christmas sales. Perhaps a matte screen version will also be available then. Defo time to OLED!
Great machine. Best laptoo reviewer.
