They always say nonsense that China's streets are dead, but look at the timing of your visit. It is the Lunar New Year, China's biggest holiday. And Guangzhou is a first-class city with a population of 20 million people, but it was originally an immigration city, so many people return to their hometown to see their parents, so the streets are empty

Yep. Some of the Megacity in China are "relatively" empty especially in the 1st 3 days of CNY. Had a similar experience in Shanghai a few years ago and use the opportunity to go to restaurants that normally needs hours of queing time. Starting from the 4 th day and on, the domestic tourist would comes in and man o' man, one would learn how to redefine one's personal space -- it's just something in your head 😁

The strawberry candy is called: Tang Hu lu. It's traditional Chinese food, invented in Nan Song dinesty . Around 800 years ago, the emperor Guang Zong wanted to find a way to cure one of his wife, and a doctor from outside palace gave him this prescription.
Using rock sugar water boil hawthorne berries.

China is not just big but geographically diverse. Almost all types of terrain on earth can be found in China. Also all kinds of climates from sabarian winter to topical summer. The strawberry you tried at 3:00 is most likely from northeast part of China called Dandong. This unique diversity provides Chinese people all kinds of food and ingredience. That's why Chinese cuisine is so rich.

Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for family reunion in China and it is as the same as Thanksgiving in the US. Now you can tell why the street is empty. Kiwi is originated in China and it’s original name is Chinese gooseberry. New Zealand growers rebranded it to Kiwi from Chinese gooseberry for commercial purpose in 1962 when they started to export Chinese gooseberry. If you go to Japan some day, you may find Ramen is Chinese food in there.

Chinese New Years is like Christmas, it's a family event, people will be out around the 31st, but really most people are on their way home, by 31st evening it's usually clear. 1st day of CNY is super quiet because everyone is inside and shops are closed, on the 2nd, you are starting to see some tourists, but things don't really get going until after the 5th.
If you know where the celebrations are at, you can go party on the 31st, otherwise you will just see empty streets.

Most 1st and 2nd tier cities in China are empty during the Chinese New Year because most people go back to their hometown. You will hardly see street vendors, and a lot of the mom and pop shops are closed. Malls can't close because they are required to stay open. At their hometown they go visit family members and old friends (Bai nian), give kids or the elderly red envelopes, play card games and mahjong, and there is excessive amounts of food and fireworks.

Great video! Ramen and gyozas are actually Japanese Chinese food. Traditionally (and often still today), you would go to a Chinese restaurant (in Japan) to get them.

During the Chinese New Year, many people return to their home provinces to reunite with their families. Those fortunate enough to already live with their families in their hometown often travel to other provinces for vacations-perhaps to the north, the middle, or the west of China.
In the South, where you are located, it is not typically known as a vacation spot, with the exception of Hainan Island, the southernmost part of China.
If you find yourself in Hong Kong during this time, you will discover that the Chinese New Year is actually the quietest time of the year. Many people choose to travel elsewhere, either to the mainland or overseas, for their vacations. As a result, numerous shops, including restaurants, close their doors.
This explains why the travel records for the Chinese New Year in 2024 have soared to over 400 million times, setting a new record that surpasses the pre-COVID figures of 2019.
Most of the foods you tried, including those you enjoyed, are considered snacks or quick meals, rather than substantial, decent meals. These are foods we typically consume when we are in a hurry or extremely hungry, not the kind of meal a whole family would share during regular celebrations, formal gatherings, or family dinners.
The meals you had were not proper and decent at all.
P.S. If I did not know you any better, I might feel offended and think you both were being rude.
I know you both tried to be cute but you weren’t. Be sensitive to the local culture. Be respectful.

If I were a first time tourist in China, I think I'd prefer to go there at this time as well so it won't be packed. I guess it follows - less people, less expensive right?

@@bashersbeware This is definitely a bad choice since most stores are closed during the holidays. This will cause some inconvenience unless you choose some of the more popular tourist cities. Because there are more customers, more stores are willing to triple their employees' wages during the holidays to maintain normal operations.

    • @hongkongchina2048

@@bashersbewareNot at all! The best time to visit China is actually around Christmas in Hong Kong, China and Mainland China, because of the Christmas lights.
The worst time to visit China is the Chinese new year.
The second worst time: Chinese long holidays.
Avoid long Chinese holidays (Chinese new year holidays are included).
P.S. try the low season (before the high season) in December/ or late November.

During the Chinese lunar holidays everyone goes back to their hometown. Even in Taiwan, don't expect to see busy and crowded streets in the major cities.

Chinese new year is not a one or two day celebration, it’s rather a week-long or even 2 weeks of celebration. And for many working class people this is their only long-time vacation in a year where they could go back home and visit their families. Guangzhou as a big city has many of its population saturated by workers from smaller cities around it and even all around the country. That’s why you wouldn’t see much people and shops closing early because there’s just not many people to do businesses for and not many workers to keep running the businesses. Everyone deserves a break and be at home.
