Amazing you could communicate with the black pudding lady using the phone. The lady actually spoke Mandarin with a heavy local accent. Really surprised the phone could still recognize what she was saying and translate it correctly
Language barriers are the past things. Look for timekettle two way auto translating earbuds in real time. 95% accuracy.
that lady did not have heavy accent. If so, the phone can’t handle it!
To be honest, this couple's accent is much heavier than this lady's Chinese accent.

not sure what to make out of this. If you aware that Alipay might not work sometimes. Why don't you have a couple of hundred cash just in case? Instead of making fusses and getting for free out of kindness. These are small businesses, hardworking and kind people. I think you know there will be issues, and the locals are kind people
Lol, these two couldnt bring themselves to carry a few quids worth of cash in their pockets. Its painful to watch sometimes.
Many vendors don't have cash for change because no one else uses cash. Alipay and Wechat cover everything.
Agree. It's not interesting to take the aunt's food without paying
@janesheng7517: While it's important to carry some cash, some vendors do not accept cash at all.
@@violetviolet888 did they try to pay with cash?? not even
😅🤣The little boy is very polite and wants to take pictures with you. Too bad you don't understand.
Maybe in the future you guys should pay first before the vendor starts cooking, just so that you can be sure the payment will go through. The vendors make a hard living, and they should get paid, especially when you are actually making money from the videos with the vendors in them
Yea agreed! There were another RUclips couple that goes to China and their Alipay is 50/50 too but at least they carry cash in case it doesn’t work. Those Chinese vendor makes so little already. 😢
Totally.
When you eat red dragon fruit for the first time, you should pay attention. Some people may experience red color in the toilet after eating red dragon fruit. Don't worry, this is a normal phenomenon.
It’s the same with beetroot juice
Also pay attention to chew corn kernels well. 😂
Same with asparagus and pee 😂
I discovered your channel through Backpacker Ben and have been thoroughly enjoying it. It is great watching you guys enjoy everything and each other whilst inhaling so much good food. Gets ya right in the feels. Safe travels!
Hello Alan and Shannon: I absolutely love your food adventures. Two thumbs up. I hope to see more food adventures from China. You two are brave... stinky tofu is definitely not for every palate, in a similar manner Blue Cheese or Durian isn't.
Some vendors do not accept Alipay bound to foreign cards. Most do but not all. Some foreigners would ask a local friend (or hotel front desk) to transfer some RMB into the main Alipay RMB Wallet (you just give them the equivalent cash).
Alipay since July 2023 can be linked to foreign credit or debit cards.
The communication is awesome. Amazing to know Scottish eat pig blood sausage. They said Europeans don't eat blood and organs. This is probably the meaning of travel and sharing.
The french eat almost everything that moves (like Chinese). The Spanish are also adventurous eaters.
欧洲人是 不会做 所以才不吃的,, 所有食材到了中国厨师手里都会变成美食
@@k.k.c8670 I can understand why Spanish got that reputation...
@@k.k.c8670 i think it is a common stereotype that chinese eat almost everything, just a part of chinese. me personally, i have a very limited diet list.
@@annaliu908 sure but on the aggregate.
You guys are always fun to watch.
Thank you😆
@@Alan_and_Shannon Shannon, I recommend that when trying new food, you don't have to put the whole thing in your mouth. Just take a nibble to discern taste & temperature before going in for more.
Really enjoying your videos and adventures, travelling out on Thursday and excited to see some black pudding in the mix :) As an older guy from Dundee great to see you both doing Scotland proud :)
I really recommend you bringing some cash with you just in case alipay not working sometimes. It’s illegal to deny cash so paying cash should be fine in China.
25:45 The Chinese character for number 10 is 十. So the Chinese use two index finger crossing to represent 10. Similarly, number 6 in Chinese is 六. The gesture is make fist with thumb and little finger out. Numer 8 is 八. The gesture is thumb and index finger up like mimiting a pistol.
I shall not try the pistol 😂
Love your accent 🥹 and thanks for this glimpse into a city I have yet to see!
so amazing u can meet someone talking to you and so friendly
The leaves are perilla leaves. They’re common in Asian BBQ places. Common in Korean BBQ places and if you ever make it to Dongbei in China their BBQ has it too. So they’ll grill the meat and you eat it wrapped in perilla leaves or lettuce. Do not deep dry lol :)
Omg, I’m salivating
My translation app is called "話語翻譯師" (don't know what is it in English). The screen is divided into upper half and lower half. The upper half is inverted (clever design). The lower half accept what you say in many language such as English and Cantonese. The translation is show in the INVERTED upper half both in Simplify Characters and Spoken. The upper half also accepts what is said in Mandarin. Super convenient. I am a Hongkonger, sometimes I need it to translate Cantonese to Mandarin.
wouldn't be easier if you just write it down...
What a food adventure 😍😍
Glad you guys ended the night with that nice crispy pork belly! Seems very tasty.
9:07 That little kid in red finally garnered the courage to ask for a photo with you, but got "rejected", lol.
Stinky tofu is definitely an acquired taste. You guys are brave to try it.
Literal garbage 😂
15:24 I had stinky tofu before and it wasn't that bad but the variant I had is not black/khaki green in colour.
I've eaten stinky tofu but it didn't look like what they had.
@@MacrosFTW Hope they don't have diarrhea after eaten.
I ate it once, but it wasn't black. The stand that sold it smelled like sewage, though, so I was expecting the worst. However, once the tofu was fried it didn't smell that bad at all, and it tasted like regular deep-fried tofu that was a little fermented. All in all, it tasted OK, but I was disappointed that it didn't have a stronger taste.
wow, you two went to Nanning, seems you are getting used to “communicate” with locals now😂😂
lol I was just there miss you guys
hi friends, if your Internet in China is not so good, maybe you can exchange some more cash, so as to avoid the embarrassment of being unable to pay! Just a few suggestions. Have fun
you can go to Xishuangbnana in Yunnan province, it got biggest night market in China, it's like in Thailand.
Think of blue cheese when you eat stinky tofu. Its basically a similar idea, except one is made from fermenting milk solids and one is made from fermenting tofu. It is an acquired taste. However different street vendors make it differently so maybe this version didn't taste so good. There is also different types of stinky tofu and personally i prefer the puffier versions because they have a nice crunch when friend and have a nice fluffy center. In China, the best tasting places usually have massive lines :D
Yeah exactly, the smellier the blue cheese the better!
The tofu in this video looks really bad. Not as good as a high quality one.😂 Maybe they tried a pretty awful one that even the locals won’t buy.
You should have tried the food stand right next to pork leaves, the one with yellow lighting~~~that is the icon food originally from nanning.
WOW Wonderful.. Cheers Dears...
In China if we eat too much deep fried food, we will drink some herbal tea to “ 下火”,it means clear the internal heat caused by the food. So, it would be very interesting if you guys try to drink some berbal tea and react. It’s easy to find in Guangdong and Guangxi Provinces.
You 2 lovely young people
You don't realise that they are insulting ??
interesting
pork blood sausage (black pudding) is a common food in the northeast of China. I think a lot of places share similar food concepts due to similarities of climate and stuff, I always find it very interesting when different cultures share similar concepts
18:05 very considerate details, and if in India, they would put their hands into the juice and stir it
Yay, a fellow Canadian! I just love how adventurous you two are. Mmmmmmmm stinky tofu……you went for the strongest version….
It's just like chinese trying British Vieux Boulogne 😂
23:03 It's not coals, just round black and smooth surface rock.
You should come to Sweden. Black pudding, potato cakes, bacon and lingonberry jam. Best thing there is!
Alipay can't be used, maybe it's the phone card, because you didn't buy a phone card from Chinese mainland. China's calling card is to verify the identity of China people. But it can be used briefly for a few months. It is suggested to buy Hongkong or Macau cards in China, and some vendors selling calling cards can consult. Have some cash on you in case of emergency.
Yes! I just posted a video about this 😅… a Chinese SIM is really as important as AliPay and WeChat here. And it’s so easy for foreigners to get compared to other stuff in China! We just need a passport and to walk into any China Mobile or Unicom-the name on the door is even in English!
You're right. It's not appropriate to use international roaming in China. It's too expensive. It is more suitable to buy China SIM card or Hongkong SIM card. You can use VPN to upload YT video on your computer. China is a cashless society, so it is convenient not to carry coins and paper money. Do you know that?/You know what? There are millions of bacteria on paper money. If you are a foreigner, you'd better bring some cash to spare.@@abbyabroad
@@abbyabroad Thanks for the info!
❤ 😋😋😋
The stinky tofu you got was a bad one. It’s supposed to be puffy on the inside and crispy on the outside, not soggy. Just a tip, buy from stalls that specialise in only one or two things, you’ll get better food this way
Squid with curry sauce, try it when you can get it., it's a common street food in Hong Kong.
I totally agree with you: the dragon fruit with a white core is tasteless haha... However, I don't think I have ever tried one with a red core... I love the one that is yellow on the outside, and very sweet on the inside and where I live, we import them from Colombia and it is called pitaya.
Agree the red ones has more vitamins and a bit expensive and smaller.
The translation app looks cool - what app is this?
Google translate
OMG I am from Nanning.... And i was home for the spring festival for 10 days! I would say that this is one of thr cities that has the most night markets in China! you can find affordable food and clothes. rememver to try the famous rice noodles!

Stinky tofu is from Hunan Province. The old generations also don’t like it like my dad(70s). For them, it is the new and unusual thing.
I eat pork like that all the time, just salt and pepper though. So good.
If you Alipay were not working, get CASH with you ! They are just doing small business. Don’t take it for granted.
Always good to try new things and interesting
Yes, we should have the courage to explore the world.
Lol they try everything and anything and sometimes it horrifies me haha but good on them
those are not langoustine, they are mantis shrimps, which are very popular during the summer.
Good game .
Thank you 👍

I am guessing your digital payment is linked to your bank card, so it's a hit and miss, probably the authentication problem on the bank card side. If you are using Chinese bank, that's another story. Chinese block chain tech is very advanced, which is why the local digital payment works in a blink of an eye.

I thought you guys were from Ireland lol... By Your accent!!
Similar accent haha!
That bipolar weather can be compared to Melbourne, Australia.
The lady is very nice to give you the free food.
Just notice, that is the market street right opposite my apartment!!! 😂
Hahha no way!
@@Alan_and_ShannonBy watching at your vlog, we should all be around Nanning at the same time. I left Nanning right before the New Year. What a miss. Well, if RUclips would have pushed you guys to me earlier, we could meet up. Street foods nowadays are becoming boring, as they are not much different everywhere. Local delicacies and famous wee restaurants were what I crashed into in my last visit. Anyway, enjoy your journey there, and keep the good jobs coming! Take care you both 👍
U can get a dragon fruits in the UK; definitely.I live in Essex and I always get dragon fruits from greengrocery.
Can get them for a fraction of the price here, that’s why we’ve never really ate them in the uk🤣
Never had black pudding myself but I like chicken-duck blood soup.
You cannot forget about street food😂

You know how much would cost for the grilled octopus in the restaurants in US? At least $15 for one of these on the skewer
How comes you guys don’t buy drinks with the food?
We got some juice near the end!
How brave to tried stinky tofu,, awesome people😂
Thank you!

There are different Stinky tofu in various areas of China So you may enjoy it more the yellow colored fried version.
I think you are in Zhongshan. Roast pork belly and shiqi pigeon are some of the famous food for foreigners in that area.
Does it remind you of haggis?
stinky toufu is fried and is actually good. But the fermented amaranth stem is really bad. My mom steamed it with rice once separately, but it smelled so awful that I refused to eat the rice.
That carrot u thought is actually intestine with vegetable stuff into it

Alipay. Are you guys using Tourist card?
It is our UK bank card we use for it
The food is freshly mad,if you don't want it, it can't sell it to other guests, so it's free for you. Seeing that you can go to the next booth to pay, you should go back and pay the money to the family. It's not a good look at you guys. Business is not easy. Think of others.
It’s because the womans Ali pay was not set up correctly and it doesn’t allow foreigners to pay for items and are not food/drinks or goods.
It happens about 10% of the time, going back to the Lady wouldnt have made any difference
Because the international card doesn't work for like "individual business", only works for registered companies, to avoid like money laundry.
True, and some small store's QR code only accepts dept card, in that case credit card won't work.
yeah, best to carry cash aswell
@@Alan_and_Shannon maybe you can ask some locals Give them cash and they transfer & top-up your Alipay digital wallet so that you don't have to carry them
@@Alan_and_ShannonYes you’re right you should carry some cash incase.

why not you guys test pay before order to avoid embrasment? some street food vender use personal qr code rather than commercial qr code that is why not support your credit card which bonded to your alipay.
9 out of 10 times it works, don't find it embarrassing
@@Alan_and_Shannon Okay,no offensive,I also use alipay which bonded to my credit cards. just want to let you know I also hate when it is not supported( In this case usually deposit card is acceptable)but I understand foreigners are hard to get a deposit card in China, so I hope the government regulated this in the future that make commercial qr code is a must to have businesses even it is a small vender slaes.
He is right . Some street-stalls dont use business Alipay QR code, they use personal QR code. So foreign payments will fail. That's also why you hardly ever fail to make payments in big shopping malls.the small vendors do not need to pay taxes. 用中文总结一下, 支付宝为什么 有时候付款会失败 原因是 有些商户用的个人收款码 并不是店铺收款码,个人收款码是不能收外币的。
Nice street food market
It was great!
后面的 脆皮五花肉 才好吃😂😂
Some simple personel QR code,If u scan and pay with the credit card will face failure,Solving this problem you need charge some changes into ur alipay ,the balance in your accout paying these personel accout will be no problem. The business QR code scaning with ur ID card is no problem.Hope it helps ya nice couple.Peace

A small suggestion, if you have difficulty communicating with merchants like at the end of the video, you can find young people near you to help you. It is easier for young people to understand the content you translate using translation software, and it is easier for young people to quickly know how to use your translation software to communicate with you. The highest proportion of young people who know English is around 18 years old, because this age group is about to take the college entrance examination, and English is a compulsory subject.
Yeah they can be a life saver!
