I learned from a little old lady years ago that if you wanted to transplant peonies, you need to do it on a rainy overcast dark day or in the evening at dusk. I've done that for over a decade, I've divided my peonies & rescued peonies from neglected areas. This bit of "ancient wisdom" has worked every time. She mentioned that Ants were very beneficial & she believed that they helped to pollinate the buds 🤔

The ants are not necessary for the blooms to open. They love the sticky coating but it’s an old wives tail that ants are required.

My very favourite flower! I've split peonies and moved them around from place to place and not had any problems. I do have one that gets sun only in the afternoon but it blooms and is doing well. I follow what my mom told me about peonies and how and when to plant them which is pretty much what is being said here. Good luck peony lovers! From Ontario, Canada!

I find support cages are not nearly high enough. This year I am using 4 foot cedar stakes with jute string between the stakes. As they grow, I go back and run a new higher string between the stakes, leaving the lower one to keep the plants from bulging out. Its working. We started with a couple of bags of rhizomes, and 8 years later we have split them many times - we now have about 150 plants. Best part is when the neighbours look forward to seeing the blooms. Their excitement and smiles are worth it.

We planted peonies for about 20 years. Peonies are very sensitive during transplant and may get transplanting shocks. It may not flower the following year and even as long as three years. Try to minimize the movement and motion. Be patient and don't give up! They will be fine!

You are right about the low maintenance, the soil they are in is so old, yet they bloom every year. I did now know you could bring the flowers inside as I was worried about ants in my house. I have had three peonies that I planted from small plants about five or six years ago. I also have two that were given to me from an old plant. It took several years for my original plants to bloom, and then about the fourth year, they bloomed beautifully. Last year, I had one bloom. I didn't do anything differently. Why might this happen? Also, is there anything I can do this fall to help them bloom next spring? When do you fertilize and with what type of fertilizer. I so want beautiful peonies.

Thank you. I Love Hydrangeas, peonies and roses. Especially old Heirloom varieties. I transplant peonies and other plants using my block technique. I cut out as big a block of soil around and under the plant as possible and relocate it to the desired site. Plant generally has no idea it was moved. Hard on my back but it seems to work. The advice another poster they received from that old lady about doing it on an overcast day makes sense to me. Keeps the roots from being sun dried. As for the ants, they don't hurt the plant. They might also remove noxious insects. I ignore them unless, as you say, they are on plants I am bringing in.
Do you sell peonies or old roses?

I've been obsessed with Google Lens this year. I go around the property looking up every plant I don't immediately recognize.
There's a gorgeous deep pink peony growing in a dirt mound that got left 15 years ago.
Don't know where it came from, but I'm so glad I left it!!
However, I was planning on digging it up and potting it so I can make sure it will live through winter but now I'm not sure I should do that. 😢

Could I ask you a question Kelly? I'm growing a peony in a large container in a mostly shady but bright terrace, thinking I'd try my luck. The bare root was medium sized and there's a bud coming, I see some smaller buds too. Do you think this means the indirect light it receives is enough for healthy growth, or is the bud the remnants of the previous year's growth? I would be satisfied with having less blooms, but consistent every year. I could consider moving the container to a sunnier spot, but that part of the terrace is more like a very hot greenhouse in summer afternoons.

Two things I do. One is nematodes. I always do them once a year. The other is I use a product called Vitazyme. It is a probiotic that you buy in concentrated form. You can use this stuff on any plant or tree. A lot of the apple orchards around here use it as a drench in the spring. It will blow you away. Of course, that shovelful of composted animal manure helps too. Do you hold your buds? We are just finishing the season here and now I will start pulling buds out of the cooler to complete their bloom. You can hold them up to two months. oh, and I have some peonies they call Pioneer Peonies. They have a flash of red at the center. I got mine from a man in his 90s who got them from his grannie. Love them.

Actually its best to cut Peonies short, dig up, seperate, & replant in mid-late Fall! They're dormment and waiting for the long cold nap, its necessary for rejuvenation.

What do you fertilize with and when? I have new roots to plant asap.

You mentioned that peonies are low-maintenance. I think some of mine aren't blooming as successfully as they could/should is because of a couple of things you outlined: they don't get as much sun as they want (the trees in my yard are likely much, much bigger now than when the peonies were first planted) and maybe they need the ground cleared away from the stems / planted too deep. I do cage them because they're so heavy, but wonder if fertilizing them would strengthen the plant too. What are your thoughts on fertilizing peonies?

Thanks for the tips. I have a Yellow Paeonia Peony that Ive planted and the leaves are going a burgundy brown colour and Ive had no blooms. I wonder if the plant is shocked from transplanting it? Or if the sun may have burned the leaves? Im on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Same weather conditions as Seattle Washington. Thanks again Patricia Ann Jenkins :)

It may wait until it's third year to bloom. My yellow ones have 3-4 buds each at 3 years.

We inherited about 10 peonies plants and unfortunately we live in a super humid and rainy environment. I'm finding out I need to start spraying fungicide on them right as they start growing to avoid blotch (this year) or powdery mildew (last year). They are worth the hassle though, we just got a new one blooming a deep red color just this week

Any tips for planting from root into container/ pot please… currently renting so def don’t want to plant in ground & leave them behind. I’m from South Africa, Cape Town. After searching for 3years I found 2 suppliers in other towns who were willing to sell me rhizomes, getting them couriered towards end of July. I’m binge watching all the videos! Thank you for this channel & all the tips!

Oh how cool , I would plant them in deep pots ( at least 17 inches deep and wide )so the roots can stretch out as they mature . Also keep in mind that Peonies need a certain amount of chill time over the winter . Here is some information on chilling them properly
