I learned from a little old lady years ago that if you wanted to transplant peonies, you need to do it on a rainy overcast dark day or in the evening at dusk. I've done that for over a decade, I've divided my peonies & rescued peonies from neglected areas. This bit of "ancient wisdom" has worked every time. She mentioned that Ants were very beneficial & she believed that they helped to pollinate the buds 🤔
Sounds like some super peony advice . Thank you Prayon for sharing that one with our flower tribe . 🌸🌸
The ants are not necessary for the blooms to open. They love the sticky coating but it’s an old wives tail that ants are required.
@@theglamgram you are correct..ants aren't vital to peonies blooming
My daughters husband mowed over her Peony, it was just getting started
“A happy marriage is the union of two good forgivers “
I have had the same peony bush for 45 years from my mothers backyard. its healthy and beautiful.
THAT IS SO WONDERFUL !!
My very favourite flower! I've split peonies and moved them around from place to place and not had any problems. I do have one that gets sun only in the afternoon but it blooms and is doing well. I follow what my mom told me about peonies and how and when to plant them which is pretty much what is being said here. Good luck peony lovers! From Ontario, Canada!
I find support cages are not nearly high enough. This year I am using 4 foot cedar stakes with jute string between the stakes. As they grow, I go back and run a new higher string between the stakes, leaving the lower one to keep the plants from bulging out. Its working. We started with a couple of bags of rhizomes, and 8 years later we have split them many times - we now have about 150 plants. Best part is when the neighbours look forward to seeing the blooms. Their excitement and smiles are worth it.
That's amazing on the growth!
I love peonies and grow them as my grandmother also did--from Ontario, Canada 🇨🇦 🍁!!! ❤️🐝🌻🦋
I’m in UK 🇬🇧 and remember in 60s loads of ants 🐜 on peony buds . Still my favourite flower along with David Austin Roses .
Your dog is as beautiful as the peonies. Thanks for sharing your time.
Great tips!
We planted peonies for about 20 years. Peonies are very sensitive during transplant and may get transplanting shocks. It may not flower the following year and even as long as three years. Try to minimize the movement and motion. Be patient and don't give up! They will be fine!
My favorite flowers.. thanks for the tips ❤
Happy to help . Thank you for watching . 🌸🤗
I fertilize every spring which helps make mine look lush. I have some planted that get a couple hours of afternoon shade and the blooms seem to last longer. I divide my peonies, irises and canna lilies every year in the fall and give some to neighbors and friends. I have taught them how to divide and we also do plant swapping 😊
Hi Kelly, I’m quite new to gardening. I do have peonies in my garden in London. Loved the video and your gorgeous dog. I’ll keep watching for more tips.
Seeing Lucy always makes me smile. She seems so sweet
i've been wanting to take out a small shrub i have and put in peonies and these were some excellent tips, thank you!

Great video. One of my favorite flowers.
Watching from the Pacific Northwest - Oregon. Would love to start my own plants. 🪴 Thanks for sharing!
I just found your channel a few days ago and it’s embarrassing to say how much content of yours I’ve watched as I research through to see if piggies are the right fit for me. I have to admit, I had fallen for Pedro, I loved his hair and temperament. When I stumbled upon Pedro’s passing yesterday through a video, I knew I had to watch his tribute. Thank you for reminding us that we feel. Losing a pet can be very hard. Thank you for your work in sharing, it’s always uplifting, even during the hard times. God bless you!
They are lovely plants. Thanks for the informative tips as always 🙂🌺🌺
Hi Dave , glad you liked the peonies . You are very welcome 🌸😊
Thank you for the tips. I just bought 2 plants in New Hampshire. Can't wait for the blooms...

Hi from Minnesota, your video was very informative thank you so much!
The Peony is my state flower, Every Spring I look forward to my Sarah Bernhardt blooming. They are so beautiful, they don't look real. I have dozens of buds that will bloom by Memorial Day.
Great, succinct presentation! Watched several other videos and this was the best! Thank you!
Mine are around 75 yrs old. I'm glad I found your channel...
Just re-watched this video getting ready for my beautiful Peony to bloom soon ! Mom and I plan on going to the garden center to get a couple more varieties this year. Thanks, Kelly! 🌸
I came across this video while scrolling RUclips. I have two lovely dark pink peony bushes, and I alway like learning how to keep my plants healthy. You are right about the low maintenance, the soil they are in is so old, yet they bloom every year. I did now know you could bring the flowers inside as I was worried about ants in my house. Thanks for the tip on how to remove them! Oh, and I’m in northwestern Ontario Canada, I believe zone 3.
I have never in my 68 years seen such absolutely gorgeous peonies in my life! Thanks for the information. I am guilty of never really caring for my peonies, yet they always bloom beautifully. I wonder what would happen if I actually fertilized them! 😉😊🌺
They thrive in benign neglect
Hi from Norway! Thanks for your peony tips!

Wonderful videos!
Jersey grrl gardeners rock!
Hi. From eastern side of Washington. I live peonies. Mine I planted a few years ago never got flowers. But to my surprise this spring its loaded with flower buds 😅 so happy. Thanks for the info
Hi from Spokane. Peonies are my favorite as well.
I have had three peonies that I planted from small plants about five or six years ago. I also have two that were given to me from an old plant. It took several years for my original plants to bloom, and then about the fourth year, they bloomed beautifully. Last year, I had one bloom. I didn't do anything differently. Why might this happen? Also, is there anything I can do this fall to help them bloom next spring? When do you fertilize and with what type of fertilizer. I so want beautiful peonies.
Learned some good things today! Will remember! Mine is probably too deep and I added mulch! Leaving the green leave s as I await to cut them down in the fall- hoping for more buds next year!
So gorgeous!
Thank you flower friend !
Lovely. Beautiful peony garden. I am just now getting my bloom payoff after waiting patiently…well perhaps impatiently! 😂❤
Thanks, love my Peony
I love peonies , I wish I can grow here this year
🇦🇺hi, I’m from Australia & needed some tips to plant my store bought peony.. thank you it was very helpful 👏👏🇦🇺

Thank you because of you I now have 6 peonies and hope the grow and bloom thank you. Do you ever share your roots or sell them? thank you kindly. I love gardening to relax after working many hrs am a nurse and gardening relaxes me.
Very beautiful and amazing peonys l lovet it's an attractive garden .🌺
Thank you for your kind comment Linda 😊🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸
Lovely flowers.
Thank you flower friend 😊🌸
I'm learning so much from your videos thanks for sharing. It's such a beautiful flower and you can't believe how much trouble I had finding out It's name.
Thank you. I Love Hydrangeas, peonies and roses. Especially old Heirloom varieties. I transplant peonies and other plants using my block technique. I cut out as big a block of soil around and under the plant as possible and relocate it to the desired site. Plant generally has no idea it was moved. Hard on my back but it seems to work. The advice another poster they received from that old lady about doing it on an overcast day makes sense to me. Keeps the roots from being sun dried. As for the ants, they don't hurt the plant. They might also remove noxious insects. I ignore them unless, as you say, they are on plants I am bringing in.
Do you sell peonies or old roses?
Thank you from Sweden.
Hi Kelly, Thank´s for sharing! Sweden/Stockholm.
Thank you. I didn't know about full sun all day
I've been obsessed with Google Lens this year. I go around the property looking up every plant I don't immediately recognize.
There's a gorgeous deep pink peony growing in a dirt mound that got left 15 years ago.
Don't know where it came from, but I'm so glad I left it!!
However, I was planning on digging it up and potting it so I can make sure it will live through winter but now I'm not sure I should do that. 😢
Michigan, growing peony w LOVE!
Could I ask you a question Kelly? I'm growing a peony in a large container in a mostly shady but bright terrace, thinking I'd try my luck. The bare root was medium sized and there's a bud coming, I see some smaller buds too. Do you think this means the indirect light it receives is enough for healthy growth, or is the bud the remnants of the previous year's growth? I would be satisfied with having less blooms, but consistent every year. I could consider moving the container to a sunnier spot, but that part of the terrace is more like a very hot greenhouse in summer afternoons.
I’ve put used coffee grounds on the soil to stop the ants climbing up the stems as ants don’t like coffee grounds.
Thanks I’ll try this, ants are such a problem.
Beautiful - from England! Was looking for some phoney advice!
Amazing ❤
I’m watching from Oklahoma! Thank you!
Hi, from Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Great tips!
I’m new to your Chanel. I wanted to learn to take care of my hydrangea and how to propagate.
Peonies in Belgium, I really have to watch out that the soil drains! I will try the support cage tip next summer to stop the floppy flowers from getting muddy
I love Cranbury New Jersey I live peonies thank you love you video
I just inherited two lovely peonies from my mom and will definitely be keeping these tips in mind! My mom says to water them to death and has them in pastic 50 gallon buckets in native soil (pretty dry and dusty stuff lol) and they send off beautiful blooms every season 😅 not sure how we're related with those green thumbs of hers lol
Another tip, if you pinch off the lateral buds you will have one, strong, perfect bloom and the stems will be less heavy.
Hi from Victoria British Columbia. Thanks for the great tips
Thank you for the tips! They will help me going forward! From VA
Happy to help Melissa ! Thank you for checking in from VA 🌸🤗🌎👏🌻
Very nice
Yes, NJ
Love peonies
Two things I do. One is nematodes. I always do them once a year. The other is I use a product called Vitazyme. It is a probiotic that you buy in concentrated form. You can use this stuff on any plant or tree. A lot of the apple orchards around here use it as a drench in the spring. It will blow you away. Of course, that shovelful of composted animal manure helps too. Do you hold your buds? We are just finishing the season here and now I will start pulling buds out of the cooler to complete their bloom. You can hold them up to two months. oh, and I have some peonies they call Pioneer Peonies. They have a flash of red at the center. I got mine from a man in his 90s who got them from his grannie. Love them.
Iove peonies,good video
Thanks!
Peony is the most beautiful one❤❤❤
You have a beautiful garden! Yesterday I bought my first peony plant, and from the look of it the pot has three or four stems coming out separately from the soil, Do you think I can plant them individually or in groups of two, so that I have multiple plants? I’d really appreciate your tip!
❤ from NY
In the North, in Pennsylvania we call Peonies, P n eze. Peonies in the South, they call them pea own nese like the Mexican surfs, peones. I don’t even try to pretend that I know anything about peonies maintenance. I love P n ese, I have quite a few bushes in my garden, I love them.. great tips though thanks. 🥰❤️🎶
Cool! There is detachable cage support
Thank you for posting this great tip ! Yes they are so easy to work with too . 👏👏👏🌸🌸
I live in Hamilton Square. I had no idea we had this in Cranbury!
Thank you!
You are very welcome 🙏
Great video 👌🏻♥️
I found out that I could have peonies in zone 8 and I purchased 4 rhizomes and they are growing beautifully in black pots on my back porch I would like to put them in the ground. now I'm wondering if I should wait to transplant them? Or should I leave them this season in the pots? Beautiful, Blessings
I’m a new gardener also. And I have planted a few peonies 3 years ago from just bulbs. Mo
Blooms on the first 2 years maybe because I had them in planters and like you said in your video, planted too deep. So I transplanted to the ground then last year and finally got blooms!!. My question is? How can I propagate peonies? Or do you already a video for it?
Just found your channel and subscribed .
Hi Bonna, so glad you found our Flower Tribe. Welcome ! You can propagate peonies through cuttings , from planting their seeds and also from digging them up and splitting the plant so each section has a few viable eyes . I will make videos in all of these soon . Thank you for the inspiration 🌸🌸
I love seeing how to take care of my flowers . I love Cranbury New Jersey love your tshirt where did you buy it
Thank you what a great video. I love your dog I have 2 Bernese Mountain dogs.
You are very welcome . Love the Berners 🐶🤗
I have had success moving peonies, they are delicate and need the cage and care when moved. I have lost a few but mostly success.
My peonies get morning sun only..and they bloom profusely....I have pink..white..red ...and they're beautiful..I've cut the older plants in half and given them to friends and my Mother -in- law...and they heavily bloom in spring..my elderly neighbor dug his out and gave them to me..I planted them where I could find room..they are beautiful
Beautiful!! Thank you for the tips!! I’m going to get my first one! Which varieties do you have? I love the white one too!
So happy you loved them . My favorite double pink peonies are called Sara Bernhardt. I have a bunch of different whites but they were simple labeled as double white when I bought them 🌸🌸
@@KellyLehman Thank you so much!! I’ll get one Sara Bernhardt and One white one to add it in my backyard!! Can’t wait to enjoy these gorgeous beauties for years to come!! What a treasure you have created!!
Never move peonies in the spring! Late august-September is your best best. I moved several peonies, they did great
Actually its best to cut Peonies short, dig up, seperate, & replant in mid-late Fall! They're dormment and waiting for the long cold nap, its necessary for rejuvenation.
My fav!! Too bad I can’t grow it in my state. Store bought is all I can get 😩
What do you fertilize with and when? I have new roots to plant asap.
You mentioned that peonies are low-maintenance. I think some of mine aren't blooming as successfully as they could/should is because of a couple of things you outlined: they don't get as much sun as they want (the trees in my yard are likely much, much bigger now than when the peonies were first planted) and maybe they need the ground cleared away from the stems / planted too deep. I do cage them because they're so heavy, but wonder if fertilizing them would strengthen the plant too. What are your thoughts on fertilizing peonies?
Thanks for the tips. I have a Yellow Paeonia Peony that Ive planted and the leaves are going a burgundy brown colour and Ive had no blooms. I wonder if the plant is shocked from transplanting it? Or if the sun may have burned the leaves? Im on Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Same weather conditions as Seattle Washington. Thanks again Patricia Ann Jenkins :)
It may wait until it's third year to bloom. My yellow ones have 3-4 buds each at 3 years.
We inherited about 10 peonies plants and unfortunately we live in a super humid and rainy environment. I'm finding out I need to start spraying fungicide on them right as they start growing to avoid blotch (this year) or powdery mildew (last year). They are worth the hassle though, we just got a new one blooming a deep red color just this week
Any tips for planting from root into container/ pot please… currently renting so def don’t want to plant in ground & leave them behind. I’m from South Africa, Cape Town. After searching for 3years I found 2 suppliers in other towns who were willing to sell me rhizomes, getting them couriered towards end of July. I’m binge watching all the videos! Thank you for this channel & all the tips!
Oh how cool , I would plant them in deep pots ( at least 17 inches deep and wide )so the roots can stretch out as they mature . Also keep in mind that Peonies need a certain amount of chill time over the winter . Here is some information on chilling them properly
www.gardeningknowhow.com/ornamental/flowers/peony/peony-chill-hours.htm
Thank you for checking in all the way from CapeTown Sputh Africa ! 🌸🌎👍👏🤗🤗
