    Aurora Colorado - Suggest when using bamboo supports and garden tape to loop the tape around each support which adds more support to each side. Often when just using one long piece of tape around the whole plant the tape will slide down the bamboo and offer little support. Best practice is to put the peony “cages” in place before needed. Happy gardening from Colorado.

    Thanks for the tips! I have been using the small tomato cages and they work great. You don't see them when the plant bushes out but they work well and are cheap. They are much cheaper than the peony cages.

    I think the grids offer the most support, have used for years. Peonies still flop a bit within the plain hoops. Have never seen the double hoops, those would probably work better than the singles.
    If using the grids, put over the peonies when about 8-10" high and gently guide them into individual grids, this gives them air space and also distributes plant for maximum fullness. Some of the stems will be shorter than others, check their growth each day and then guide into an empty grid when tall enough. Stems are pretty flexible in beginning (before buds develop), but try to place stems in the grid straight above when possible.

      Oh nice . Fingers crossed your peony flower blooms this year . Sometimes they take a few years to get reestablished before they bloom again .
      Make sure there is no more than 2 inches of soil above the highest eye . If your peony is planted too deep it may not flower. Some gardeners in warm climates follow the rule of only have one inch of dirt on top 🌸🌸

    Fantastic info!! A question about deadheading them -- is it ONLY good for visually "cleaning" them up and redirecting energy? Is it possible that it could encourage them to rebloom during the same season, the way deadheading works on other flowers like Rudbeckia and Tickseed?

    I’ve found that when staked upwards the water doesn’t drain out of the bloom after a rain and the bloom becomes brown and rots. When drooped over - they drain and dry

    I use what I call tomato cages to prop my peonies up and it works pretty good for the main part of the plant, but the stems that grow above the cage with the heavy flowers still droop over. I’m thinking I need an even taller cage to support the actual blooms. Maybe that grid support will work, I’ll check it out! P.S. Are there Peonies with stems that are stronger to start with? Specific species I mean, that you could recommend (I’m in zone 4-5)? I’d appreciate it.🙏

    Buy your round plant supports at the dollar store. Nothing fancy about them; they've been around for decades. It's not a 'system'. It's a plant hoop for a buck or two. I even have one extra tall with 3 hoops! Had them for years; store them away in the winter.

      You can put a few bamboo poles around them and use twine or gardeners tape to circle the plant and keep them up . You can also cut out the heaviest and/oldest peony blooms to make a lovely bouquet and then maneuver the other stems so they can terrine and prop each other up

    • @KellyLehman
      @KellyLehman  11 дней назад

      I know , that can be an issue . I usually give the blooms a gentle shake over the grass to get them off but you can also give the blooms a quick dunk in a bucket of water to get them off and then dump the bucket of water in the grass to see if the ones you saw came off . 🌸🌸
