Off stage Don Rickles was one of the nicest and kindest person you could ever meet. He took shots at every race and everyone was okay with it.
Back when we weren't offended by everything and could just laugh and have a good time!
Everyone was OK with Rickles doing it because he was an extremely funny guy. There was also a genuine warmth behind his equal opportunity racial jokes. Not everyone could do his shtick because they didn’t have his talent or his intentions.
I’m 65 white male, Sanford and Son, One of my favorite shows In the 70s. back then everybody had a sense of humor. Fred made fun of everybody black white Hispanic, and we all laughed. Today everybody is offended by every stupid little thing. I still watch the reruns and love it.
Nah, man. We still have a sense of humor, AND we can say more than we want more than ever before. Don't let others get you twisted. It's different than back in the day, but it's not "worse". Look around at comedians these days on some RUclips vids, and you'll find offensive stuff. I'm not much younger than you, also white, also was raised on the same stuff you were. I never noticed a switch, but apparently some of yinz do. Don't let someone convince you of something, bro. Love 💙

To make sure, they just disallow us to disparage any genetics at all. That's THEIR job. They are the worst racists of all. They are elitists. They think their inbred blood is better than our "mongrel" blood. They once famously "purified" their own race, by killing all the ones with gypsy blood mixed in. Just to give POLO a little more info: The Dean Martin Celebrity Roast was a series of television specials that aired from 1974 to 1984. Don Rickles was a giant in entertainment. One of the funniest people that ever existed.
Just find some George Carlin, and you'll be set. One of the greatest to ever do comedy.
Don Rickles is the GOAT. He was so brutal when he did his act but, if you ever pay attention like to what he said at the end to Redd, Don was the kindest, giving, polite, humble man in show business. He was loved and respected for his friendships and generosity among other celebrities and to everyday peoole and his fans.
That is why he could say the things he said and people accepted it. They knew it was an act and he was the best person and the only person who could get away with that kind of humor then and no one has been able or tried to do what Don Rickles did as a routine.
He is the GOAT.

Some of my best laughs as a kid was watching Tim Conway and Harvey Korman together on the Carol Burnette show, trying so hard not to laugh. Tim was freaking hilarious!
my grandmother had redd foxx albums in the 60s..ya got to clean ya azz before a date..a skit..granny loved..so i always liked redd foxx and kept my azz clean.. she was born in 1917..and lived to 93

One of, if not the greatest to ever do it. Not a hateful bone in his body. Over time it seems like people forgot what comedians are, it's pretty damn obvious if someone is telling a joke or if they're just a garbage person. But unfortunately people make it their job to be offended because it gets them attention.

Having grown up in the 1970s, I know that if you watch the movies of the time, like Animal House, or Blazing Saddles, or 1941, or Caddyshack, or The Blues Brothers, the number one thing that you cannot miss is how much less thin skinned the entire populous at the time was. They had a sense of humor and could laugh at themselves back then. Can society today still do that ?
Loved Sanford and Son, Don rickles made fun of the people he Loved and admired. He was a gem.

This is my first time listening to your channel. Fantastic. I love that you keep it real and understand satire. You could never make great shows like in living color today. If we cannot have fun and joke with each other. This now is where we are. Keep doing what you are doing. I’m white and Richard Pryor is my all time favorite. Along with Chris rock, Dave Chapelle, and Eddie Murphy.

I loved Sanford and Son. All these years later I still remember Fred going through the drawer looking for the reading glasses and when he said”It’s the big one, Elizabeth. I’m coming. You did miss some funny stuff on “Good Times” when Florida would ask JJ where something came from and he said he “found” it. She would raise her eyebrows and tell him to put it back where he “found” it. It was a good show where a hard working Mother and Father in the projects tried to teach their kids to be good people. Shows were funny then. No one was critiquing shows to make sure no one’s feelings were hurt. People could laugh at themselves.
That was great. I appreciate your honesty.

I hear this a lot, but I’m not always sure what people mean by it.
The social context has changed. Should we change it back to the period (1950s) where Rickles found success with his equal opportunity racist schtick?
People still do racial humor. Sometimes it works and we laugh. Sometimes it falls flat. If you want to do jokes on the topic of racial issues, you still have to follow the same rule: be funny.

Don Rickles roasting Bob Hope is one of his best.
Saw Don when he was in his 80's and he was still sharp. Also, never missed an episode of Sanford and Son. One of the best shows ever!
I remember watching the Roasts as a young teen. Rickles razzed everyone but he did it with love. Everyone knew not to take anything he said like that personally. Still love watching The Jeffersons. Great comedy. A lot of the classic tv shows are on Pluto TV app. Glad to be able to still watch them. Love George Carlin too. A different kind of comedian but funny as heck.
I can't say I'm a better person than kids who didn't grow up with humor like this but I can say that I'm a person with a much better sense of humor because I grew up with this type of humor as a kid.
The Dean Martin Man of The Hour Roasts were so funny back then. There only put out a few each year, but they were always something to see.
As others have said you had Don Rickles the comedian and Don Rickles the person. If Don was make jokes about you he really loved and respected you.

I met a family friend who was a Greek waiter back then. Sinatra, Milton Berle, Rickles, all these guys would have dinner there. They all gave handsome tips like Sinatra did. And yes there were some "wise guys" there too. He said Rickles was probably the most talented entertainer he ever met. Don called him dago lol.

Never cared much for Don Rickles. Being 74 I watched all the shows in the 70’s from Archie to all the spin offs. Thank you Norman Lear.

God I miss those days. I had a rough upbringing but I knew how to laugh no matter what because of these shows! The Carol Burnett show was my favorite with Tim Conway and Harvey Corman just had me dying! Harvey could never keep a straight face which just killed me! So funny!! Today I struggle with trying to get out of the depression I have lived with my entire life even though I know the truth of God, (no religious dogma involved) and I have no fear of dying. The world no longer has anything fun for me. I've been alone for 20 years with ill health trying to heal myself of everything I went through, it was too much, far too much! And while I know everything on earth right now is all about stopping the karmic cycle and stop the negativity, it's going to take quite a while yet before that happens. Everything is so slow. So many people still asleep, although quite a few are awake now, more than I expected. I have extremely high hopes for us collectively, I know we'll get there, I'm just very, very tired.

Just wander through the Dean Martin Roasts to find something that interests you. Like you said, they went there back then. People weren’t afraid to laugh at racial BS back then. Now people are far too sensitive. Possibly because too many people veil their racism in the guise of comedy.
I loved Sanford & Son too. Back then I lived in El Segundo. Redd Foxx was one of the greats. My brother found some of his old comedy records in a record shop. He absolutely killed.
People sat in the front row of the nightclub just to be insulted by Don . They wore it like a badge of honor

Fun Fact: Gary Shandling was one of the Sanford and Son writers. Actually other than Paul Mooney most of the writers were white Jewish guys like a lot of Norman Lear's shows. Foxx had a fascinating life even before he was in the Chitlin' Circuit. You should try Good Times again (along with All In The Family). They're a bit more culturally important than Sanford and Son. Norman Lear was a genius and yet rarely had anything to do with the writing with a few exceptions.

You nailed it, propaganda and media saturation.
“You can’t do that today” is what people say when they don’t really understand the talent of Don Rickles. Rickles was funny, funny at a genius level. There are comics today working at or near that level.
What made Rickles racial jokes funny? Dissecting humor is always fraught, but I’d say that his notorious biting mean-spiritedness was tempered with human warmth and affection for the target of his jokes.
We should also look at the context of this roast. These black entertainers sitting at the high table were finally being allowed to sit at the table. Their talent was finally being acknowledged and honored after decades (centuries, really) of being denied entrance. In previous decades, black entertainers weren’t really allowed in the room, with rare exception. And even those exceptions had to use the service entrance.
The joke about Redd Foxx’s success after years of failure had a subtext. It’s the subtext of a talented comedian being denied access because of the color of his skin.
Context matters. Comedians don’t tell the same racial jokes because the social context had changed. I don’t mean we’ve become “too politically correct”. That’s the mantra of people who want to return to older social contexts. We have room for new racial jokes in our new social context.
I don’t want to turn this into an essay, so I’ll throw one more thing out there: with the exception of Dean Martin, I bet most of the non-black people at that table were Jewish. Why is that?
It had to do with a time when comedy, movies, and a lot of popular entertainment was looked down on by white society. Jews didn’t take over Hollywood. They developed it. Stand up was invented by Jewish people who had no other creative outlet. At the dawn of mass media (Radio, Movies, and then TV) Jews attained success with white audiences. It just took longer (and required other societal shifts) for black entertainers to catch up.
OK, this is officially too long. Let me leave one last thought. I promise, this is the last one. There is a reason that Jewish comedians and Black Comedians have worked well together in general.
Narcissism is at its peak in today's world. A virtue of comedy is being able to laugh at yourself.

It must be a generational thing. I can still listen to a comedian do their routine and no matter what jokes they tell I can still laugh about it and not hold grudges. It's called comedy for that reason. So maybe it was just a time that I grew up in because we were being told we should hate Lenny Bruce and George Carlin because they spoke differently about the things happening in our country. But, they were right. It just took a while before everybody wanted to admit it. So I can take just about any joke. Unless that joke becomes a reality. Peace!

They dont do "put down" comedy like this anymore, such a shame. You can see at these roasts they were all friends, respected and laughed WITH each other! Now? Forget it! Jimmy Walker wasnt treated well in that show he was in ,the fellow actors hated that America loved him and became the star of the show. I read it was very hard for him on set! Shame...

Demond Wilson played Lamont on Sanford And Son, so Rickles was saying playing Demond Wilson's father was "punishment" for all of his failures, I'm assuming. Which of course makes no sense because, as you alluded to, Sanford And Son was a great show, but like a lot of Rickle's jokes, the humor was in the delivery and not so much the joke itself. Some of Don's jokes were genuinely funny, but a lot of them were made humorous by his timing and how he told them.
@timpwhit --- What Don was referring to was Redd's career prior to Sanford and Son. Being a Black comedian and or actor in the 1950s and '60s was a very difficult career choice. Comedians in those days, White or Black would have to work in strip clubs and small niteclubs doing their acts before, in between and after the bands, girls, or whatever was the main act. Most clubs and hotels wouldn't let Black comedians or musicians work in their clubs. The ones that did would make the Black acts use the backdoor and through the kitchen to come in the building, not the front door and they were not allowed to sit in the bar or audience and watch the other acts.
Now, it was bad enough dealing with that but then Redd was notorious for being very vulgar and dirty jokes that were pushing the envelope of being censored and getting clubs fined and shut down. He tried to run his own club and it failed, he tried to get acting jobs and never haf any success. He had a drug habit, bad marriages, trouble with the law, and was basically washed up and no one would hire him for any job. Until Sanford and Son gave him a chance and he became a star at a late age in his life. That was a time when having a crude, racist, old man as the main character in a sitcom was popular thing and we got Sanford and Son, All in the Family, Chico and the Man, Barney Miller and some others that weren't as good as those three shows.
Don said Redd having to work with Demond Wilson was his punishment for all his former failures to finally make it big because Demond was known to be a very difficult person to work with and didn't like that Redd was the star and got all the attention when he thought it should be him. After all, Redd was a washed up old comedian and Demond was hired as the main character originally and became the brunt of the jokes on the show and in real life.
