I had the pleasure of running into Don at an airport in 2001, was waiting for my luggage with a co-worker of mine after we returned from a work trip and I spot Don sitting there waiting also. We went up and said hello to him and chatted a bit.. very nice guy and he was always on it.. my co-worker asked Don if he could say hello to her on the phone.. Don agreed, proceeds to hit on her and ask her what she's doing married to this schlep.. It felt like we got a 5 minute stand up routine from him.

Many here might not know this, Mr. Rickles graduated from high school, enlisted in the Navy and served during World War II. He really was one of the best.

The music you mentioned is called The Matador. I think it's a traditional bull fighters song from Spain or Mexico. Rickles used it as his theme/walk-on song for years.

Man, Rickles is on another level. Sitting here with arguably two GOATs, just casually running the room, with both of them hanging on his every word, with the audience tagging along like children to the Pied Piper. Legend

Whenever Rickles was on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson (which was often), he'd be played on stage with that music by Tonight Show band leader and trumpeter extraordinaire Doc Severinson. I saw a documentary about Doc recently, and he was still going strong into his 90s, still performing and teaching his craft to the younger generation. He's in great shape, spends lots of time in the gym to retain his musical abilities. It was surprising to me how physical it is to play trumpet at that level, but you need it to hit those high, sustained notes.

I would have to say that Don Rickles may have been a great inspiration for Robin Williams. Not so much in the content, but in the speed of comedic delivery for sure.. Rickles was more personal with his material, and Williams was just all over the place, as you were always surprised with what would pop up in his act, or should I say Improv..

Rickles' highly interactive and confrontational style eventually melded with his own vision of himself as a bullfighter-to which Johnny Carson began to play La Virgen de la Macarena as Rickles' entrance music, a traditional matador's song that takes the bull by the horn section...Google

They always have it backwards. The mob had some Frank Sinatra ties. From the stories you do hear, Frank was always the guy and the mob was always like "Frank, is it ok if we..."

The matador music was always Don Rickles intro music. He would have been censored to oblivion today. He hung around what they were called the Rat Pack. Alot of those celebrities hung around the mob in that time. The mob ran most of the casinos where these celebrities entertained.

So some scuttlebutt about Frank and Monroe. some theories move around Sinatra had Marylin taken care of cos JFK and his brother didn't pay back monies. Campaign monies and Frank had their playtoy taken away. I don't know if that's even near truth but one of the many theory's
