Outlast was an exquisite blank page to find scary textures and to create an homage to classic horror movie soundtracks.
For the music of Outlast 2, it was important to both Red Barrels and myself to have a really different score from the first game. I was challenged to make a soundtrack that was as interesting and authentic as the first one, but with a unique approach and fresh musical palette.
The great quality about horror is that it allows for creativity. I wanted to push the boundaries and challenge conventions with this score.
I wanted to create something more physical, brutal, and raw, but it also had to be original, adventurous and bold.
I went away from the orchestra for Outlast 2. This score features recordings of guitar, banjo, acoustic bass and experimental percussion. I then distorted and tweaked them through modular filtering to amplify the eerie quality of the music. It’s a way to extend my musical palette, starting from accessible and making it inaccessible.
For the soundtrack release, I wanted to create a concept album. It was important to me to tell my own interpretation of the story. Although the game's narrative is quite gruesome, in the end, this journey has been a very personal one, as I have explored my own fears and touching the darkest and more sensitive sides of my soul through the music.
I hope you will appreciate the experience -- I really enjoyed creating it.
Samuel
The music makes me shivers, the game is pointless without music so thank you for you incredible work!
Samuel Laflamme you're very good and nice
It's brilliant, it really creates a unique atmosphere in the game
This soundtrack inspires me to bust a nut to Jesus Christ himself 😍😍😍 AMAZING work 👌
Samuel Laflamme dude, you are like the jesper kyd of horror music, very fluid and creative with music and able to blend it in with the atmosphere🤘🏼🔥🔥 btw man, what was the soundtrack where blake is in the library running from the ugly dude? it had a steady bass going and i gotta say that part was the scariest for me, damn near had a heart attack 7 times 😂
Outlast wouldn't be Outlast with anybody other than Laflamme.
Excellent choice, RedBarrels
Truly hes the reason these games feel like they have so much life in them...
@@michaelbecket4901 Agreed.
@@michaelbecket4901 it's because he has an approach to strings that not many composers use.
@@phalanxiatheroan863 so hes creative? Lol
@@michaelbecket4901 I was agreeing yeah.
Sounds creepy, sounds beautiful, sounds frantic... Sounds like Outlast.
To this day, I absolutely adore this soundtrack.
Same here man....perfectly gorey ost
Samuel Laflamme, you've done it again. Your music is such an important factor in Outlast. It's my favourite game, and just the music makes me shiver. Truly a piece of talent. Thanks for being part of this game, and help making it what it is.
Red Barrels: Hi there we are making a second Outlast and It would be nice if you can make the soundtrack.
Samuel: Hold my beer
This is a masterpiece, well done.
Venom HD And then The Red Barrels held Samuel's beer for months
I think they're still holding it.
Phazey Arrhythmicattacker But he finished composing it? He's probably finishing that beer now..
+Aryan J They had to hold that beer for so long they stiffened and so they're holding it to this day. ☺
They spilled the beer when they got the music! ;p
thank you master, for one more night.
2:51 is the sound you hear when you know that you're gonna die.
*heavy breathing*
I love, absolutely love how well the tracks fade into each other. it's one of the best soundtracks I've heard ina longtime.
Oh thank you so much!! I worked a month long to re-edit all the cues and make these as a concept soundtrack album. It was important for me to create this soundtrack a whole musical experience by itself.
Oh wow!
It worked! You're one of the biggest reasons why Outlast and Outlast 2 were so memorable for me. It's the music, man! It brings up so many emotions, fear, hope, dread and so much more... No need to thank me haha. I'm just glad it's all paying off for you, and that a lot of us are enjoying your music! I don't think this series would have been the same without you.
I'll go buy the album now, and listen to it a few dozen times. :)
IM LISTENING TO THIS WHILE DOING HOMEWORK AND I WAS WONDERING WHY I WAS GETTING SUDDEN BURSTS OF STRESS
Oh my god... THE BEST soundtrack for horror game ever created! Not including the first Outlast :)
Anon 4ever Different styles, cannot compare each other.
Listen the Dead Space soundtrack's
Necrhomorph attack
I like prey's soundtrack more.
This is going to be one bloody, gory, controversial, fucked up and disturbed work of pure art... I can't wait.
The soundtrack for these games is perfect, great work!
nice cant wait for the game to release :DD

REDEMPTION
18:19 🔥
30:33 At the end of the game, I remember crying salmon snot. This music was playing precisely.
REDEMPTION
I love this soundtrack more & more as years go on. The intense chase scenes, the creepy Texas Chainsaw Massacre-like experimental segments, and the holy music trying to break through the darkness at the end. Very beautiful 👍🏻
The original Outlast's soundtrack felt claustrophobic and haunting, Outlast 2's soundtrack makes you feel like you have enough room to freely roam around, but nowhere to truly hide; which obviously fits the gameplay.
What I also like about it is that the chase themes make you feel like you're outside, sprinting and feeling the wind on your face as you're desperately trying to not get snuffed by an animalistic lunatic, whereas Outlast 1 made you feel like you were inside with limited possibilities of where you can run. Obviously there are times where you are inside/outside in both games, and the soundtrack always changes in tone slightly.
I've said this before, but the soundtracks are like makeup to the scenery; they complement each other greatly.
I'm aware they're using a different composer for the Outlast Trials, but I'm hoping you get to have some influence over Outlast 3, because you really know what you're doing when it comes to sound and music.
I still fucking adore this OST. Incredible stuff
Six more days. Can't wait!
Mr. Laflamme, you're truly an amazing composer.
The Outlast series' music has been absolutely incredible. I'm very glad Red Barrels chose you to create it, because Outlast just wouldn't have the same feel without it.
This music is a masterpiece, from the first Outlast've seen this quality in the melodies, the music and the sound effects, I did a perfect job, I can not wait to be 25! keep it up 👍
This is still my favorite video game score.
Thank you so much!
Like theRadBrad keeps saying : Listen to that while running
Playing this right now and always thinking "This damn music is what gets me the most!" It's so good! Without it, the game truly wouldn't be what it is! Good job Red Barrels and Samuel Laflamme!
I hope my diapers get delivered in time.
such a unique & intense soundtrack. im not sure i would’ve enjoyed outlast 2 half as much without it. seriously incredible stuff
Thank you 🙏🏻 It means to me!
go for a jog at night and blast this on your headphones. I guarantee you you’ll break records.
I love how each and every single track mingle and seamlessly transition between each other
So excited to hear Samuel Laflamme's work in the Outlast Trials!!
Unfortunately, it isn't Samuel this time, it's Tom Salta instead. But it does sound promising.
At least he used different names so it wouldn't exactly be spoiled. This is great! We get the full soundtrack without spoilers. Why didn't Capcom do this with Resident Evil 7
Miles Upshur 2 cuz it was slower paced than Outlast...also it wasn't that scary since we cud fight back
The Ave Verum Corpus by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in the end is just the cherry on the top. Congratulations for all the compositions. Great job, Mr. Laflamme!
i will always have such a deep respect and appreciation for this soundtrack and the work you and your team put in to it. fucking incredible attention to detail, so wholly intense and unique. the music is definitely my favourite part about the outlast games but outlast 2 is absolute sonic chaos and it's jaw-dropping. fantastic job across the board.
I'm getting goosebumps every 10 seconds...
this is a master piece. Can't wait until the games out! Greetings from Germany ;)
Neeee du darfst es nicht spielen, kleines Kind. ;)
ehhh? xD
Hast du´s nicht verstanden?
Shuya Den satz ja aber..meinst du das grad ernst? :'D
13:02 15:14 parts in the actual game is just fucking terrifying ( Forget which one exactly for that one chase in the fucking crawl space...... But love it!
27:47 this is the moment where you hear all the growling and screaming running towards you
Outlast = NOT Voice NOT Face Of Main Character
Outlast II = YES Voice NOT Face Of Main Character
Outlast III = YES Voice YES Face Of Main Character :)
outlast IV=TMI
Why does everybody leave out the dlc wistle blower
@Redofreko oh my bad 😂😂😁😁😫😫😫
You're right bud
except we'll got Outlast Trials first
@@alvin7642 LOL Thx!
This is my current go-to for horror writing. Love it.
I run in the treadmill whilst listening to this soundtrack, and I have to say it works like a charm
Hurts my digits thinking about all those people playing those instruments for this soundtrack. Inferno 🔥
Jesus Christ this soundtrack IS F$%KING AMAZING!!! Great job Samuel LaFlamme, great f&%king job!
man its crazy that this is a whole different game and soundtrack melody but still somehow hits just the same as the 1st outlast
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
The last piece sounded depressing. Something big is gonna happen there.
And about the REDEMPTION thing, I assume it's as simple as it is seems. The Testament of the New Ezekiel will cleanse Blake and Lynn of their sins.
TheCaboose23 maybe it's just for Blake becaues maybe he has some kind of personal guilt for not being able to save Jessica from loutermilch and he feels like it's his fault somehow and blake at some point might have a chance of redemption but not just for his guilt of Jessica. But also for his act of sins that he's committed in his life events but we will have to see if this is True or not.
Adriel Hunter Ooo. I like this theory.
Ezequiel* :l
well the piece *is* about Jesus on the cross. I don't care what your religious affiliations are or not are, but being on a cross slowly suffocating by your own weight sounds like a pretty depressing affair.
"I thought we were all dead" Best one 🙏❤
Thank you for releasing the music before the game was, it gives me an opportunity to imagine my own story line and let the atmosphere of the music sink in.
I'm a huge fan of instrumental, atmospherical and dark music, so I always have a picture in my mind while listening to music such as this.
I can't wait to play the game, well done !
This is awesome.. Great job Sammy
Whenever one of the chase music played, my anxiety rose so much, fantastic work again Sameul!
You've made this game great and terrifying with your art :)
Genius! This soundtrack made the game for me! Excellent job mate!
IF YOU TAKE ALL THE CAPITAL LETTERS IN THE DESCRIPTION AND PUT THEM TOGETHER IT SPELLS REDEMPTION
Wow !!!!!!!
:O
I knew there was something up with those letters!
This whole soundtrack is lovely in the most horrifying way. But "show me your true face" is on another level. Always makes my jaw drop. The mechanical pulses throughout? Brilliant.
30:00 This part is just INTENSE AS F*CK 😝🤘🏽🤘🏽
thank you for doing this. sound amazing! can't wait to see the visuals
The capitals in the description spell out "REDEMPTION" what does this mean?
holy shit nice find.
Dude...how..great observation
Joseph Velardez Your name should be Jesus not Joseph.. Good catch
I'm sure it refers to the game ending somehow.
R0GUE No Walrider this time around.
as usual, samuel's work here is PEERLESS. another brilliant soundtrack.
Gracias a tí por esta banda sonora del juego, me lograste dar la inspiración para mí futuro proyecto con un juego de terror. La verdad muchísimas gracias ;)
This game is just an adrenaline rush from start to finish. The atmosphere is other worldy and creepy. I love it
Thank you for this timeless horror sound masterpiece.
amazing work
we all love you samuel
Absolutely thrilled for the launch of the game and this seals the deal.
RandomCanEHdian Ayyy. Last time I saw you was on the Whistleblower trailer.
Been playing since launch.
i'm sweating right now listening to this... Bonne Job Samuel ;)
Thamk you for this beautiful scarry game!I've finished all the modes!Love them!
Tears of excitement on Track 2, anyone notice its a rendition of the first games soundtrack? beautiful!
really hope they bring you back for Outlast Trials!!!
I am now more excited then ever! This music is kick-ass!
The Chase soundtracks are just so epic
Probably the best soundtrack I've heard. Absolutely incredible!
Amazing! The beginning remembers me to the Joker Theme from The Dark Knight. Best soudtrack for the best horrorgame ❤
this is an excellent piece of horror music. on par with The Shining's soundtrack, but a modern, more rushy and FRANTIC version, in which you are being hunted. you've got it perfectly to what it was originally created for, a horror game which in itself is the digital embodiment of hell. good work Laflamme
Just finished the game, what a ride, in great part thanks to your music.
Parabéns ao Criador destas músicas de terror macabras, gostei demais, ainda bem q a saga Outlast continua de pé.
Another Masterpiece
Thank You!
Barnabás Falvai busta
Mr Laflamme one word : Masterpiece
Samuel YOU ARE FANTASTIC
I'm so hyped!!!
These are freakish-ly beautiful .
The music is what made this game for me...incredible stuff! I'm gonna play this at my house to scare trick-or-treaters this Halloween!!
РАЗ В 50-Й УЖЕ ПЕРЕСЛУШИВАЮ!! NICE!!!
run dude RUN
I love to hear this, it's so gentle, all fucking percussion sound!! I love this soundtrack, you're te best!!man
I hope you're on board for Outlast Trials!
Best soundtrack in my opinion. Good Job!
I love the discreet trumpets in the chase music !
nice job Samuel, just a bomb!!!!!
That is amazing. I didn't play game . I just listened soundtracks. But I scared.U re master Samuel Laflamme.
This sounds so sick and creepy at the same time!
This is pure Samness!!!
I was shocked by the last song because we sang it for choir at my school, it's called Ave Verum by Mozart
Вот это по-настоящему годно,аж мурашки по коже бегут.Жду игру с нетерпением!
The music soo great. It makes me shiver when I'm running in the game
Fuck yeahh I was just looking for music to sleep to and I saw you just uploaded
Outlast 1 was an amazing and intense and scary Soundtrack! Outlast 2 has pushed it's boundaries in a good way! I love both games!
It took me a few listens to allow this soundtrack to grow on me.
(mainly because I didn't enjoy the game as much as I enjoyed 1 (developer decided to use some schlocky gimmicks that pulled me right out of my immersion and into laughter, unlike 1 were it was a feeling of constant pressure even though there wasn't anything there to be scared of, although that's your fault haha))
However, listening and analysing this as a standalone, there is such an intimacy with the strings, the harmonics carefully and beautifully captured. It isn't bombastic and over the top, the strings are captured close mic and oooft, boy do I love that sound. No where enough composers utilise string work like you do.
You did it in outlast 1, and I think that was one of the major reasons I got dragged into the game. Harmonics and string abuse creates such a strong frisson in me. Goosebumps everywhere. Your motiff recalling every so often, broken up on a music box, even then there is tremolo damaged sounding strings.
❤️ To you sir for making this amazing and breathtaking artwork.
Thank you so much for your comment! It made my day! ;-)
@@SamuelLaflamme Happy to hear that.
In terms of ingenuity in pushing that envelope, I put you up there with Christopher Young, Elliot Goldenthal and Jerry Goldsmith.
You pushed away from what is expected in horror thematics, it felt like an older horror movie score were the composers had proper time and budget to create a vision.
I guess, thank you for being bold and making something you believed in.
I'll try the game again, I bought it on release. Just need to get over "those scenes"
Hope you're involved with #3.
@@SamuelLaflamme Oh, can I ask, is there an actual name for that bow technique where it grinds the string?
Phalanxia Theroan Wow thank you so much! They are such masters!!
Phalanxia Theroan No precise technics... more experimenting with a bow on « whatever » have strings... the harshest sounds were made with metal electric bass string... on a piece of wood with violon microphones... we were able to bend the piece if wood so the pitch of the string was not stable... ;-)
30:40 Sounds like a Homage to the first game :)
absolutely amazing.
It was cause of the soundtrack in both of them why I panicked watching these! =) Excellent horror music.
You make the best soundtracks
I have Crippling Depression!
outlast: uses haunted tuba
outlast 2: uses the choir of moaning souls
when you don't pay money back to your gang members and all of them chasing you down
