If you do the dropkick, hit or whiff, it puts Haggar into a knockdown state. Needs to get up and everything But if you cancel into pipe, you avoid that knockdown, so it keeps combos going
I'm not a ZMC player, so I'm always confused when I see Dante in second position. I guess it gives more direct access to the Dante TAC and slots Vergil for XF3, but I feel like the DHC extensions and Vergil w/Jam is just way better given that he is still an absolute monster in XF2.
I think part of it is that Dante has a double jump for incoming. It's not much, but it means he doesn't have to eat the same level of filth that Vergil will before he hits the ground.
Saying Vergil is "still an absolute monster in XF2" is drastically underrating XF3 Vergil. XF3 Vergil >>> XF2 Vergil, it's that simple. Also, Anchor Dante absolutely requires XF to be effective, so using XF2 Vergil is basically just agreeing to lose if Vergil then dies. The reason Dante needs XF as anchor is because Dante's damage isn't good enough to reliably kill without it, which is just another reason Dante/Vergil > Vergil/Dante; Vergil can finish Dante's combos. Anchor Dante can definitely work, but not when you have Vergil.
I actually like the tournaments where people are forced to use diverse or only one high tier character squads. At the top, most teams have one or two of the same characters.

I've never understood why Haggar players will whiff pipe after landing the otg dropkick. I assume it's just to animation cancel the dropkick?
Yep, the dropkick puts you in a hard knockdown, while using the pipe allows you to get followups even if it doesn't hit.
