IMAX vs 70MM vs Digital which Oppenheimer format was best?

- I spent over 10 hours in theatres watching Oppenheimer (and loved every second of it), in three different formats to decide which was the best way to experience Nolan's latest movie.

Still don't understand why so many hates Nolan. He's not only pioneering the usage of IMAX for commercial cinema but also one of the few directors who is still fighting for big theatrical experience of every movies
Absolutely, and he’s an incredible script writer, Oppy was a great adaption of the book
@@DesignedbyKirk yeah i just find it weird people hate him
I don’t think there are very many people that hate Nolan, in fact I would argue the opposite. Most of the time when people bring up Nolan, I’ve noticed that they tend to bring him up in a loving and positive light.
It’s not hate, people just dislike his sound mixing. Which is true, his dialogue is always so drowned out by the sound effects/OSTs
I’ve been seeing Oppenheimer in 70mm IMAX, and honestly I’ve notice how the color and film grains make the image pop out better compared to a digital rendering.
completely agree it looks beautiful in imax on film!
Chris Nolan is truly the master of IMAX
He sure does know how to best utilise the format!
I currently work at Rivoli and there is only the one 70mm projector with the entire film on one print, on a pallet just like IMAX. Probably is shown on multiple reels at other 70mm locations but not anywhere that has an auto rewind pallet system. Our projectionists just sat and made sure nothing went wrong and everything was always in focus. No switching necessary
That's awesome! My mistake, I'd love to know what were the seemingly projector switching indicator icons (for lack of better technical description) that I saw in my screening? My guess then would be that they're put into all 70mm prints from Universal Pictures and distributed to cinema chains, regardless of whether or not they use multiple projectors, compared to the IMAX reel which had none as all prints are done in a single roll
@@DesignedbyKirk that would also be my best guess!
Unfortunately wasn't able to see this movie in 70mm IMAX but I bought the 4k disc and wow it already looked amazing I can't imagine what 70mm IMAX looks like. I have a 70 inch TV and even then the quality was more crystal clear than other 4k movies I've watched.
I live here in Melbourne and the IMAX theater is amazing but the only thing putting me off seeing Oppy is that I don't think my bladder will last three hours - lol!
Still give it a go and maybe sit on the aisle for quick exit haha!
Don’t drink anything the day of and pee right before it starts 👌🏼 ❤ this movie deserves a full 70mm IMAX
solid advice! @@hexedits369
I'm feel so lucky that I managed to actually see this in 70mm imax as the theater is literally only like a 15 min drive away from me.
Likewise, very privileged to have access to such great theatres here, and so close too!
@DesignedbyKirk Yeah, 100%! It's the Manchester Imax i went to, but I just wish they kept the 70mm reels like they do at the BFI.
Thanks for the video. Cool to hear your comparisons. I was lucky enough to get to see Oppenheimer first on IMAX 15/70 at Citywalk AMC theater in Los Angeles. It was really really stunning. So immersive. I then did get to see it in regular 70mm.. which was still really great... but not quite as impressive as 15/70. Thanks for helping educate people about the different formats!
You're welcome! It's so interesting see everything in each format. 15/70 still my favourite of all time
Damn, it's been close to two years since I've seen your channel and this video randomly pops up in my recommended. Cool to see what your up to nowadays.
cheers mate! just purring along!
I went on vacation to London, UK to see Oppenheimer in IMAX 15/70mm at BFI IMAX. I regret not buying 2 tickets for two days because I wanted to see it in that format again so bad after seeing it the first time 😭 Unforgettable experience!
That’s amazing, I’ve heard a lot about BFI and might give it a visit when I’m next there. Hopefully they bring it back so you can watch it again!
Great video man !!! My favourite combo is similar to yours. I firstly experienced this movie at Astor Theatre in Melbourne (70 mm plus matching wine 🍷) and then at IMAX Melbourne in 1570 format. Each unique experiences.
Cheers mate, Astor theatre is beautiful as well, sounds like you had a great combo of experiences there!
The IMAX dual Laser 4K System is now 10 Years old. It was a savior for the Company for sure. BUT in Comparison to 15/70mm, the old System is far superieur. The difference is huge, but nobody will tell because of the convienice of the industry. The DUAL Projections are projecting a Pixel with a half pixel offset next to each other. This results in an unsharp Pixel Presetation, trying to fake more resolution, but only relsuting in an softer Image with NO extra Information. Every single-LASER is sharper than a DUAL System, you can check this easily. A 4K Resolution is only suited on a Screen max 20m wide, that's the sceond problem.
The 15/70mm System (if shot on 1570 too) is still after 50 Years in a league of its own, one of the most spectacular Things we can see today. You don't see any Pixels there, it's like infinity Resolution, projected with ONE powerful Bulb. You have to see it on your own.
There is no Comparison until we see, a true 8K x 6K 4:3 native Texas Instruments DLP Chip, no fake Pixel Shift, no Pixel overlaying. (For showing 1570 scanned Movies)
Shot digitally, no Comparison until we have a 12K x 8K 4:3 native Sensor in Size of Medium Format (GFX like), with highest Dynamic Range and fast Rolling Shutter.
- none of this is in the Pipeline at this moment.
- None of this has the asthetics of Film either.
... 15/70mm was and will be the ultimate Experience, let's support it
Happy and Joyful New Year, Kirk!
and to you too!
Amazing video!!!
thanks mate!
know what it means to feel like you can "go out and touch" the people on the screen. IMAX doesn't feel big, it feels real. The sheer size registers as actually being there. It's even more effective than 3D when it comes to creating a fully emersion experience. The real question of course is whether Oppenheimer can be enjoyed purely on it's merits as a drama, and certainly it does. But it's pretty impressive that this format hasn't been forgotten by any means.
It really does, nothing quite like it, always look forward to going back to IMAX for the next film
The movie theater in Houston where I lived had Oppenheimer in 70mm, I watched it in 70mm instead of IMAX with laser (aka LieMax) and it looked incredible in 12K, I wish the movie theater in Houston I went to had the true IMAX (aka 18K resolution)
70mm still would of been incredible, great format
I watched it on 4k blu ray on my 150 inch home theatre and oh boy even I didn’t knew that my projector was this good
Digital cameras today have superior dynamic range AND colorimetery to any film. And with digitals now being available in up to 12K resolution, even the resolution war has now come to an end, and only large format IMAX 70mm still holds an edge.
highly debatable
@@DesignedbyKirk Literally it's not. People may still prefer film for...reasons...but colorimetry, dynamic range, and resolution are not them.
Issue is no one shoots in 12k, and even if they did they downres it to 2K because of CGI because upscaling it back to 4K.
Film still holds an edge especially if effects are done practical until movies are natively shot in a higher resolution and aren't downscaled for CGI purposes.
@@DDRMR Practical effects are becoming something of a niche market, though. You're having to find edge cases that justify your love of film while the facts haven't changed. Digital has surpassed film in most respects.
We don't have a theater showing 15/70 where I live, but we have a really wonderful theater that shows 70mm. Oppenheimer was the single best looking film I have ever seen in a theater. The 70mm print was extremely crisp and beautiful.I've seen other 70mm prints there, including both Interstellar and Dunkirk, but none of them looked as good as Oppenheimer.
70mm on a really big screen, with a top notch soundstage is close to 70mm IMAX.
Both wonderful experiences
I went to see Tenet in 70MM at Rivoli. It had a really dark shading, pretty unique but the sound was nothing special unfortunately. I wish there were more Dolby Atmos cinemas in Australia, they’re pretty rare and the only cinemas that I’ve been to that have them are Docklands Hoyts, Chadstone Hoyts and Crown Village.
the BG music around 3:40 🔥🔥😲😲
Great soundtrack! Credit in description it's a meditative piece
I saw Oppy at a 6:30AM screening (yep, that's an "A" as in morning) at the Chinese theater in Hollywood and scored a seat under the projection booth. Like your Rivoli there's a charm to experiencing films in historic theaters but the sound quality (albeit still fantastic) doesn't reach the experience of modern theaters. I'm hoping to catch Dune pt2 at the Irvine Spectrum when center seats become available. Wish me luck!
Wow that’s an early session indeed! As long as you enjoy it that’s the main thing, didn’t know they even did sessions that early!
I liked standard 5 perf 70mm the best. More of the picture was shot in it, and you don’t get the same grain on the non-IMAX scenes as u do on the 15/70 print. The expanded AR doesn’t necessarily lend itself very well to the genre of film that is Oppenheimer
If I were to do it all over again, regular 70mm with the best Meyer sound system u can find in a cinema.
Fair calls! I loved the 5 perf 70mm experience, it was wonderful
@@DesignedbyKirk The landscape shots and desert sequences were gorgeous on the 15/70 print; incredible resolution and detail. But I’d trade a few minutes of expanded AR footage on a biopic for a better overall viewing experience
Kirkk, to your good luck they are re releasing Tenet in IMAX 70MM and also dune 2 is gonna be in 1570 enjoyy. Btw did you go to Melbourne imax for TDK triology in 15/70mm how was it?
Going back to IMAX soon for sure yes! Keen to watch some more of the Nolan goodness before Dune PTII!
BTW Love the Rivoli
Rivoli is awesome!
Empire of Light (2022) was mid but that scene where they changed the film reel was amazing. Made me really appreciate Mank (2020).
So true
Kirkk, any updates on the Prints which I requested bro?
I don't believe they're in a position to distribute or ship the film unfortunately, once they go to a theatre they don't typically leave I must say sorry!
how would compare dual 4k laser imax to 70/15 mm? same size as the 7 story film screen
I did make this comparison in the middle of the video during the IMAX section :)
70mm imax and it’s not even close although dual laser is a perfectly good alternative
Absolutely. All the formats I’ve seen. Not one I regret.
agreeeeed oppenheimer in 1570 imax was an 11/10 experience
where as DUNE 2 in imax the same theater (was digital) felt more like a 9/10 experience
tho the black and white harkonnen arena scene realllllyyy had me, imagine if that was in 1.43:1 1570
Truly was awesome! Oppenheimer trumps my 15/70 experience of the two
I don't know, if IMAX would using film like in the past, as the common media at that time (like during my parent's childhood 😅😅)
Only a select few theatres do!
Hi kirk, IMAX Melbourne is doing IMAX Film festival in January. Please do yourself a favour and watch The Dark Knight Triology in IMAX 70MM in that theatre!
Will for sure!
Wait why do they compress the digital version used in the laser projection?
Otherwise the file size would be incredibly huge
@@DesignedbyKirk does this cause problems because of read speeds of the systems the play the film, the write speeds for the DCPs, or the capacities of the DCPs?
Amazing video Kirk! Now I feel more sad that there is no single IMAX 15/70MM Theatre in India. Fuck!
is there any imax digital?
Oh yeah, Oppenheimer is already available in place where I usually download movies for offline watch 😯😯😅😅. Well, I watched it on my TV and it still give me decent experience
Hopefully you enjoyed the film!
You guys are lucky 😃
If we get any 1570 nolan film at Gujarat science city IMAX then the noise is going to be the crazy 💣
Does Gujarat support IMAX digital? What projector systems do they have there?
@@DesignedbyKirk This imax is owned by Gujarat govt and only plays 3d documentaries through it's 1570 projector
I see, do they have an IMAX digital projector?
@@DesignedbyKirk for now no but they are upgrading to dual laser soon and it was confirmed by IMAX vice president Preetham Daniel
Currently Science City IMAX is limited to screen only few documentaries which they have and also they are searching for other movie or documentary prints
@@DesignedbyKirk
Ha ha ha 😂😂😂.... Most of today's IMAX are digital. LIEMAX. It is Real 15/70 IMAX but now government is renovating it to dual 4K laser. I'm afraid if they discontinue screening 15/70 film movies. Which is much superior than today's digital projector.
Oh 70mm for sure, watched it in the science museum and the rest is not even close.
Absolutely, it was perfect!
comments in the start of the video seems validated for oppenheimer
Twas a great film
I wish cinemas were more honest with the type of IMAX they show. Not every IMAX screen is the same, only about a dozen in the US and two in the UK (where I live) show films in the actual 1:43:1 ratio. The rest are liemax.
I was planning on watching Dune part 2 again in IMAX, but what’s the point if true IMAX screens are so far and few between and cinemas aren’t transparent about that?
Yeah I do feel there is room for some more clear marketing / identification what theatre is what
Hi kirk, David Keighley replied to my Email he said he will look into providing prints for Gujarat 15/70mm IMAX
hopefully you get some movement, best of luck!
@@DesignedbyKirk Thanks Dude!
Yeah kirk India has 26 IMAX Digital theatres but all of them are 1.90 and not even a single one is a 1.43:1 Dual laser venue😢
might have to make a video about that, lie-max spreading everywhere
9:39
I respectfully disagree. I saw Oppenheimer at Universal Cinema in 15/70 IMAX after they extended the run, and my theater, having gone in late August, weeks after the film's initial launch, was packed out the wazoo.
Yes, my IMAX theatres were packed and full for Oppenheimer 15/70 right up until it finished the run in December / November. I was referring to a standard 70mm screening I saw on a late Sunday afternoon, was quiet
@@DesignedbyKirk Oh! Thanks for pointing that out.
Sicilian Murphy 😂
Saw the movie three times but still can't say the lead actors name correctly? Bro, come on
