    Video description :
    Before you can do any clicker training on a cat you need to teach them what a clicker is. This process is called charging or conditioning the clicker.
    So what do we need ?
    First of all you need to a clicker, about 10 to 15 treats (pea sized treats or other food rewards) - use high value foods as a reward, anything the cat REALLY likes, meat or canned food.
    Do the exercise when there is little to no distraction in the room
    Charging the clicker’ means we are going to create an association between the sound of the click and food. (connecting the food to the sound of the click)
    The clicker’s unique and abrupt sound paired with food will help your cat clearly distinguish the moment they did something right.
    For this initial exercise your cat does not has to do anything specific. Wait for the right moment (we don’t want the cat meowing or jumping), click and treat., pause for a second, do it again (the cat sits or looks at me), click and treat., and so on.
    You can toss the food on the ground or you can use a spoon to deliver the food when the food is more sticky. Using a spoon makes things less messy, as your cat will just lick the food from the spoon.
    If you don’t use a spoon, use small pea sized treats. After you click place the reward on the ground.
    I like to use a spoon with wet food because it is easier to regulate how much food is on the spoon.
    The cat gets a treat immediately AFTER the click. The ‘immediately after ’ is very important : the treat must not be given at exactly the same time as the clicking sound, because then no association would take place. In the beginning, a time span of half a second between the click and the treat is ideal. This time span can get longer once the association has been firmly installed into the cats brain.
    If the time span between the click and the treat is too long, you will fail because your cat will not make the connection between the click and the treat.
    Also pay attention not to reach for the treat until after you clicked. Otherwise your cat will think the hand motion is the marker and will watch for that.
    So try it : you take the clicker in your hand, put a few treats easy to reach nearby, and call your cat towards you. Only click once each time, and give him the treat within half a second. Repeat this a few times. And whether you believe it, or not, you are well on your way to condition your cat!
    Make about 8 to 10 repetitions of clicks and treats in one exercise session. A session won’t any take longer than 2-3 minutes maximum.
    About two to four short sessions during two days should be enough for your cat to make and remember the association between the click and the food.
    Only when the connection is made, you are ready for the next step in clicker training.
    With clicker training you can teach your cat all sort of things. In our next video I will show you how to teach ‘Sit’ to a cat using clicker training.
    One last tip before you can start exercising:
    Pay attention not to move the clicker hand, you can hide it behind your body. Also you don’t need to give commands, speak to your cat and don’t make any specific body movements, because they will be interpreted as a unwanted clues.
    Have fun

    Hello, this is such a good video, thank you. I think I've been reaching for the treat too soon. So, I will get the wet food on the spoon and leave my hand there, click, and then pass the treat. I did this so I had the treat ready and didn't take too long to pass it to him. Instead should I get the wet food ready on the spoon then moved my hand away and into my lap, wait, click, then reach for the spoonto pass to him? I struggle to get the wet food on the spoon fast enough if I don't get it on there before the click.

    • @IamCasper
      @IamCasper  4 года назад

      Yes, I would prepare the wet food on the spoon and keep it out of reach. Then ask to perform the action. Click at the exact moment it is performed and then give the treat immediately after. That is the way I do it. It works!

    What do you do if your cat is very jumpy? Not sure what the right moment is. Do I have to “surprise” her with the treat? Every time I click or give a treat she gets so excited and starts jumping and biting for more treats.

    • @IamCasper
      @IamCasper  6 лет назад

      You must click at the exact moment the desired behaviour is performed or shown. Th treat follows a second or two later. So you don't have to surprise your cat with the treat. Your cat has to associatie click wit treat. When she starts jumping for more treats I suggest you turn your body and face away from your cat... removing the attention you give. When she calms down you can restart.
      Hope this helped. Let us know how it turned out!

    Can this help to lower or eliminate violent behaviour towards another cat? Ty

    • @IamCasper
      @IamCasper  5 лет назад +1

      Hello Bianka, If violent behaviour is the result of buildup stress then clicker training will definitely help, because it makes the cat focus on achieving a specific result and it will make him tired mentally so this is lowering stress.
      Clicker training is also very good for bonding with your cat so it will absolutely helps the cat in reducing stress levels.
      Make sure you do the training separately and in a save environment so that the focus is completely on the training rather than on the other cat. Good luck! let us know how it went.

      I would say in 1 to 2 days if you do 4-5 sessions a day to get the clicker charged. It goes really fast

    how do i first teach kitten cat to sit and at what age do i begin

    • @IamCasper
      @IamCasper  5 лет назад +1

      You can start at any age with clicker training.
      To teach sit:
      Most cats or kittens sit easily... wait with a treat and when they eventually sit, click at that exact moment and give treat.
      You can move the treat over their head to make them sit quicker too, then click and treat.
      Just make sure you click at the right moment.
