Clicker Training FOR CATS Tutorial - How to CLICKER TRAIN CAT in 3 steps

- Learn how to teach your cat tricks using clicker training with 3 simple steps.
It only took me one week to start teaching tricks training to Mia, my bengal cat. By using this simple method, clicker training your cat/s can be easy and fast.
A clicker is simply a small mechanical noisemaker. Clicker training is the same as positive reinforcement training. It links classic conditioning with some animal ethology science that says that behaviors that are rewarded are more likely to be repeated.
Instead of focusing on what your cat is doing wrong (which we know will continue to happen), focus your cat's attention on what she or he is doing right.

Привет круто спасибо за мастер класс 😁👍

Still no cat? That's "procatstinating".

Dude I tried this with my two half-Bengal kittens and it totally works! 6 months in, they can do finger targeting, come when called, sit, lie down, roll over, go into their condo, reach up on their hind paws, and sometimes stay (if they feel like it XD).
I want to clarify one thing he says in the vid which confused me at first: "charging" the clicker. Basically what this means is to associate the sound of the clicker with giving your cat treats. I combined this with teaching them their names, so they would expect something good from me whenever they were called. Basically I just said one of their names, clicked, and gave that one a treat (same for the other) over and over for a few minutes over a few days. Then moved on to finger targeting, sit, and beyond.
You can do this! Cats like to learn and it brings you closer together!
Hi, are you saying you only gave a treat to the one who came? What if they both come? I'm currently trying to train two new kittens. But I'm confused about how to train them both together. When I click for one of them, should I give the other a treat even though she isnt doing anything? Or should I train separately? Its not always easy to train them separately. I dont want to dilute the effect of the clicker by working with one cat so the other hears it and doesnt get a treat. Just need some advice.
@@_____kb totally late reply, but for teaching names it's better to do it separately. Other commands like sit, lay down, etc. is fine to teach to two or more cats at the same time (the cats might even learn from each other!)
How old were they when you started?
I have the same question for two kitties that I plan to clicker train. My idea is to do them separately, at first to get them acquainted with the clicker. Then both at the same time for the other tricks. Would this be a good idea?
Great video. I agree, I think most of the problems people end up having with cats are caused by two things, free feeding and not enough attention.
Thank you! Haha Cat’s behavior explained in 2 lines! :p
Hope it helps someone, even if it’s just a little.
Hi. New subscriber here all the way from Costa Rica. How much food does a cat need everyday? we started to schedule feed but she leaves food so there is food always available... and well, it defeats the point of schedule feeding
@@eltatz If she leaves food give the kitty 1 or 2 mind tell them have u finished? I'll be removing the left food? And if they don't go back to the bowl then remove the bowl as they are full. Don't leave it sitting there. Food goes of when left on the side anyway.

Great video! I’ve got a very eager little 6-month old black kittie who’s been acting as my wing-man ever since I rescued him when he was only a few weeks old. He’s smart AF, loves adventures, and definitely ready for this!
I’ve been training my kitten for around a week now with the help of this video(I literally did exactly as Albert described), and I’m so excited to say that today it’s finally paid off, in training Milo, my kitten, went everywhere I pointed even to the top of his super tall post! So thank you so much Albert!! you’re videos are so so helpful, and everyone should watch them because they actually work and they’re very easy to follow :) thank you!!
Glad it helped! Thank you so much for taking a moment to share some love and appreciation! Messages like this keep us creating new content! :)
Don't hold the treat, just put it on the ground. When your fingers smell like the treat, they can't tell that it isn't food :)
My cat’s name is Milo as well
i just wanted to thank you once again for these amazing videos. i've started training with my cat about a month and a half ago and she can follow finger, sit, fist bump and jump in an arm hoop in sequence for just one treat! every time i post a video of her on twitter it blows up! she is not a very cuddly cat so this is has been an enormous bonding experience for us that we hadnt even known was possible. thank you so much!
You're so welcome! I'm so happy to hear that she's learned all that already! Some of the tricks you are mentioning are not yet explained in my channel so I'm sure you've also done your good research to get there! Congrats! :)
My two sister Tabby's are not cuddly either so I'm glad it works. I'll try it again
I just wanted to say thank you so much for uploading these videos and explaining how easy it is to clicker train a cat. my Bengal girl who is 10 used to drive me insane, once I started clicker training she became the cat I've always wanted. I wish I knew about these skills when I had her at Mia's age as we would have had a better relationship but that's all changed now and we're in such a good place together!
she actually picks up skills like a young cat would, I haven't had to work hard on her either, in fact I started adding in additional skills a bit early as it she didn't appear challenged enough with just "sit". so now she can sit, get into the carrier (that was a major goal for me), sit and stay (working on this one still but it's going well, finger targetting is going well but still needs work.
she sleeps through the night, doesn't hassle me for food constantly or attention, she's challenged, happy and stimulated.
Thank you
Hello, what treat do you give your bengal for clicker training?
My kitty is so chill lol I came to see how to train my kitty only to realize that she does all of the things at the end and more by herself! Very informative and will still get a clicker lol. Loved the video!
Going to binge-watch all your videos! My Bengal arrives in early January and I definitely had a hard time finding Bengal training specific videos on YT. Awesome content! :)

My house cat refused to be a house cat so I trained him to come home to the clicker. It worked better at night when it was silent. Lol
I’ve really want a bengal cat but I can only have one cat at once. I’ve had my cat for nine years. She’s my childhood pet. She’s a shorthair tuxedo and your videos have helped a lot with the bonding experience. Hi there - love your videos! We just got two Bengal kittens who are so fun. Could you do a video on feeding? 1- how you went from free feeding to a schedule? 2- what kind of food you use and 3- when do you feed your cat? Thank you so much!! 🙏🏻
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I like the idea! I'll work on one! :)
I can give you some quick answers, already though:
- To go from free feeding to schedule, try to offer "all you can eat" but only 3 times a day. Once they stop eating, remove the food until the next meal.
- I feed Mia wet food only and use dry kibble as treats for training. When outdoors, I use jam instead.
- I feed Mia 3 times a day plus the training sessions. At 8am, at 3pm and at 12am.
Hope this helps!

Thank you Albert and Mia for this channel! I began training my 16 month old cat a couple days ago and your videos are so helpful! My cat is very food motivated and is learning finger targeting and sit pretty well! When is it a good time to ask her to do a trick without rewarding with a piece of kibble? How do I know if my cat enjoys doing the trick even if she doesn’t get a food reward?
Wonderful! Intermitent reinforcement is the strongest for of reinforcement (think of casinos). You can start offering treats less. oftem during training sessions and then, incorporate commands in your day to day, sometimes with treats, sometimes without. good luck!
I just found you and I am completely excited to train (myself!) and my cat! May I ask what treat you prefer to use while training?
My kitten is surprisingly responding better than I thought he comes whenever he hears it after just one lesson but my cat on the other hand who is quite adventurous doesn’t care

hey, I been loving your videos and i’m wondering what’s the best age to start training them. I wanted to know specifically the click trick, the finger trick and the getting used to a a harness and leash to then go outside. Thank you for all of you videos
Probably easiest when they're kittens, probably 11 weeks-ish, bc before that they lack focus and just want to play (which is great!). You can definitely do it with older cats though! There's no age limit, just be patient and lean into the repetition :)

Hi! Your videos are so nice! I wanted to ask you how old was Mia when you've started training her? I've a new kitty friend that is 3 months, she's already following my finger with the treat thanks to your video. Can we start so early?
You are my favourite youtuber ❤ ❤😊
Great video and so informative. Just want to point out clicker training is a type of operant conditioning and not classical conditioning. Operant conditioning involves associating a voluntary behaviour with a consequence through incentives, while classical condition does not🤍
Very helpful. So can you eventually use the commands without the clicker and treat? Or do you always have to follow Mia’s command following with clicker and treat?
Hola Albert. Moltes gràcies pels videos. Una pregunta: estem buscant un clicker i ens hem trobat que a la tenda hi ha de diferents sons. Hi ha cap que recomanis més que altres? Que soni fort, que soni buit, que sigui un so més sord, ...? Merci!
Good.
I think Im gonna start training my cat and my brothers cat with the help of your video, so thanks for your tips hottie ;)
Good luck!! It's easier than it seems!
That is amazing!! I am doing it with my car. What about the behaviors we don’t want our cat to do? Mine is two months and she bites everything including me all the time
That's because she was taken from the mama n siblings way to soon.
They learn that bitting hurts via there siblings n mama. Kittens are teething at that age up to a year as the big adult teeth come in.
A kitten should be 3months old when they leave the litter mates n mama as this is when they learn lots of things.
Hello I’m a new cat mom and I want to be able to train my cat like yours! My plan is to buy a clicker and binge watch all your videos! But for clarification, do you “click” after they’ve done the behavior you wanted or before so they know what to do? Thank you for your knowledge! Happy New Year!
Hello Corina! It makes me so happy to receive messages like this one... ☺
Once the clicker is "charged" your cat will know that after a "click" comes a reward. By clicking when your cat does the behavior you are wanting to achieve, the cat will know that that behavior gets them a "click", and "click" comes with a reward. So the trick here is to "click" in the exact moment when they do the behavior (while they are doing it). For example, if you are getting your cat to sit down, you'll click when your cat's butt touches the floor, not before, not after.
I hope this helps! Best of luck!
@@OutdoorBengal this helps a lot!
Thanks for the informative video. What sort of treats wold you recommend and why?
Heya question - I want to clicker train my cat with her dry food but she doesn’t like her dry food at all. How can I test try new dry foods without wasting lots of food and money on the big bags ?
Hi there! I’m so happy that I bumped to one of your videos, I just started to follow your tutorials and I love them! Super easy to understand. I need to re-bond with my kitten which is going through puberty stage.
I have 2 questions tho:
what exactly mean “charging your clicker”?
And what do you mean by “scribbles”?
Thank you
Hi Daniela,
Not the video author but charging your clicker I believe means to get your cat used to its sound and associate it with treats, like cats associate the noise of their treat bag with treats. When he said Scribbles I assume he meant kibbles as in dry cat food rather than treats, since the cat can eat a lot more kibbles in a short period of time vs cat treats in a short period of time :)
Hi Albert,
I LOVE your videos!
I have two kittens that are 4 months old and started training them as you recommended at this video, however after a week I still don’t feel that they understood that the click is associated with the treat. Would you say that I need to do it for longer? Or maybe they are too young? Is there anything else I need to consider, like the pace? Thank you so much!
Great video, thanks! Just got a clicker and will start training with it. One question though: if I have catcandy with me, they will try to scratch it out of my hands there's a big eagerness, doesn't matter what time of the day I train with them or if they had food or not. And this scratching is quite painful. Any tips?
Do you have recommendations for multi cat homes?
I have two bonded cats who have severe FOMO, so they get anxious when separated. Individual sessions have been almost impossible.
Just a random thought I had when I read this comment…what if you had different clickers/sound devices for each cat? (Which would each have a unique sound) I wonder if you could teach each individual cat that their unique clicker sound means they did something good
I have been attached to my cats er since I had them thank you for your videos 😊 :from biggest fan lol ❤ ❤
Thank you soso much for sharing your experience!
Hi Albert!
Thank you for your videos! We got two kittens from the rescue a few weeks ago and I’d like to use your videos to help train them now that they are a bit older and have had some socialisation. My question is, how should I do the training with two cats. Should I hold training sessions together or should I separate them? They are always together so it feels weird to take one of them away!
Thank you 🤗
Should I continue to click the clicker as a phase out the treats?
so do you feed treats as you click the clicker for a week 4 times a day 5 minutes for a week? To start with clicker training
Hi Albert! Thanks for this video. I have a question. What are the signs to identify that the clicker is charged enough to move to the next trick?
Love to Mia ♥️☺️
So "charging" is just something you do at the beginning of training -- it really just means to associate the sound of the clicker with giving your cat a treat. So what I did was say my cats name, click, and then give her a treat over and over for a few minutes, over a few days. If you do this enough, when you say your cat's name, they will come expecting a treat, and when that happens you click and reward.
In general, I would spending at least a few weeks on each trick before moving on (I train them almost every day bc it's basically a game for me :)
I didnt quite catch that, what did you say you use instead of treats? Wonderful video, thank you so much!
love your account!! How do you train 2 cats? Can they be in the same room when you do it?
Good question. I'd like to know the answer too
Hi! Im picking up my bengal on Friday and Im so pysched 😍 but I was wondering how important is it to have a cat tree. Cant I get a simple 2 feet hammock with a scratching post? Or should I invest in a tall one so its not suppressed?
I imagine you now know that a cat tree is quite important ;) I have two for my two Bengals and it's still not enough for them XD
Hehe nice video imma train my cay

New subscriber. I’m sorry but do to the Accent I misunderstood what you gave the cat instead of treats to reward your cat. Great videos man! I love people who treat Their animals amazing
Hello! I love your videos & I can't wait to start training my kitten. He was born about a month ago and I won't be bringing him home until he's about 12 - 16 weeks. How long should I wait to start training? I figure I would want him to get used to his new home and environment before getting started.
Good luck with the training!! You can already start! Start with easy tricks such as "Come when called" or "Finger Targetting"!
Hi! I love your videos, but I have a question: since you said you train with Mia a lot, how do you manage food the days of training? Do you reduce the ammount of food on the regular meal time to compensate all the food you give her during training time? Or how does it work for you guys?
I think it was as he said either 2 or 3 times a day the amounts should be the same for the weight of your kitty, train only during play or down time and not close to feeding! Hope this helps!
For my cats, I train them every day (not as a chore, it's honestly really fun!). I feed them in the morning, train them in the afternoon, then feed them again ~9pm. If you want to start training, you could reduce the amount of food you give them by a little, but don't stress it really. If you notice their weight is creeping up, you can adjust.
Wonderful video & channel.
Just 2 questions if you can answer me :
1/ you said the 1st lesson is to touch your finger but how did you prevent him from "eating" it? ;-)n (or playing with it)
2/ do I well understand, the step 0 is to click and give a treat in order the cat to understand clicker = reward (with no specific action in this first step)
tks !!
Nice videos. We have 2 Bengals ans want to train them also. Is this even possible with clicker ? Because the other cat also hears the clicker and did not do anything for example.
hey, I really like your videos. I got a Bengal cat a couple of days ago, she is 12 weeks old. what age did you start training Mia? Thanks!
I started a week after she got home, at 13weeks. I started with easy tricks like come when called and finger targetting and as she got comfortable I increased the difficulty of the tricks and my standards to reward the tricks she already knew! :)

Hi Albert, thanks for your explicit video, helps a lot! I just want to be sure if you have to treat your cat EACH time you click, even if the skill is confirmed to be learnt?
I meant, once the skill is confirmed to be learnt, should we continue to C&T? I started the clicker training yesterday with my cat, 2 months and a half, the point is, there is another dog, 1 year and a half in an apartment, how should I manage the training while the dog is indoor? Separate them and stay with my cat in one room?
Explicit?
How many times a day do you clicker with food when you are getting them used to the clicker?
Hello!
In all of your videos, you seem to be giving Mia a lot of treats during the training sessions so it got me wondering. On the pack of treats we have and give to our cat, it says "max 6 treats per day" and I found that on multiple of other products for cats. Are there some types of treats that cats really like and can be used more frequently?
Thanks!
Hello! Thank you for taking the time to share your questions! Your point is indeed a very good one, that I tackle shortly in the video but it's probably not clear enough...
You are totally right, treats are extremely caloric and cats can get overweight if you abuse them. I do not like treats and I don't use them either. I use regular Kibble instead amzn.to/3oaNcpR
This allows me to give Mia a lot of treats withouth affecting her health or nutritional balance. I feed Mia 2 times a day + 2 training sessions with Kibble. Days where I just do 1 training session, I feed her 3 times instead.
I hope this helps! Happy trainings!
Hi, thanks for your very fast reply! :) are you feeding your cat wet food then, so she's still enjoys the kibble during training?

Hi! Love your videos! I was wondering, how old was Mia when you started training her?
My Bengal kitten Sunlight is four months old and she's full of energy, she's more interested in toys than treats, I can't always reward her with toys, how can I train her efficiently?
We started training when she was 12 and outdoor training at 14 weeks. Are you free feeding her? If you put her on a schedule that will help you a lot! :)
Thanks for your great videos! :-D I have two kitties and one of them responds very well to clicker training with the help of your videos, and the other one is not interested in the reward (cat treat) or training. I have two questions: 1) how young can the cats be when stopping to free feed? I hope this can help the less interested cat in training to wear a harness. They are soon 5 months old, but when I asked my veterenary he had never heard of clicker training for cats and could not see the problem with free feeding. 2) The cat that responds to clicker trainging paws towards my fingers when I give the treat, and I am not sure how to make him stop? He rarely have the claws out, but I would prefer him not to. He does this AFTER I have clicked because he did the behaviour I wanted, and since I already have clicked I give him the treat (right?). To illustrate with an example: I ask him to sit, he sits, I click, and then he pawes towards my fingers for the treat. Should I not give him the treat even though I clicked? I am worried I am enforcing the behaviour... Would love to hear your advice!
I'll try to break down my anser into 3:
- Cats can be trained and Mia and all those who've tried it, are the living proof.
- There's no problem on free feeding but you are removing the best opportunity to 1) bond with your cat, 2) teach them things, 3) help them adapt to follow your schedule
- The last point, about clawing, there are several things you can do: 1) don't have the treat on your hand. Put the treats in a pot and keep the pot out of reahc. 2) throw the treat away instead of giving it close to you. 3) don't give the treat until they look at you in the eyes after the trick.
good luck!
@@OutdoorBengal Thanks for taking the time to reply! :-)
My kittens get too incensed when they see treats. They start climbing me and biting at my hands and can’t focus on behaviors at all. This happens even when they are full after a meal. What do you suggest?
what does free feeding mean exactly? does it refer to wet, dry or just any food?
I like it
I don't even have a cat; but she's so cute and smart makes me want one...
Lawd I thought it was only babies that did that to people... lol😂
Hi, I tried to follow your advice... I do not free feed my cat but when I click and give him a treat he sniffles it but do not touch it. It seems he prefers having a hug rather than treats. Do you know what to do ?
