- Our beloved Fatima Sydow, Cape Malay Cooking Queen, left us peacefully on 19th December 2023. Join us forty days later as her partner of more than 15 years shares cherished memories, including special moments that defined her culinary legacy.
We express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who welcomed Fatima into their homes. Share your memories and let's continue to celebrate the culinary queen who touched our lives. Rest in peace, Fatima. Your love and legacy will endure in our hearts.

Thank you for sharing, Renford. Memories last forever and Fatima left us with so many beautiful memories. She was a lovely and loveable person... she encouraged everyone and had such a peaceful spirit explaining how she loves holding on to her used utensils or sloffies, etc... she was thankful for small mercies and that shows a lot about her genuine character... I will always search for her recipes eventhough I've been cooking since my childhood just like her. Fatima had such a way of expressing herself and relaying stories of the past which will always stay with me. Stay strong and continue to live with passion the way Fatima enjoyed life. 🛐 Thank you for being there for our special Fatima.

I am not the greatest cook, but during lockdowns, I found Fatima online, and she taught me to cook curry. I will never be on her level, but I can do more than before. And slowly I am teaching my son.
So her legacy will live on.

You know being thankful or saying thank you even 100 times; is a sign of being humble and appreciate the little things. It brings blessings and happiness even now in time of your pain. I am a South African living in the USA. I have been following Fatima for a long time now. I chatted to her and prayed for her recovery. She was an Angel. I am so sorry for your loss. Fatima was loved by all. She had such a beautiful personality, even though she was sick she would always laugh and be happy.

Hi Renfred. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and feelings of Fatima. The path you find yourself on is not easy. You are at a stage where the waves of emotions still come crashing down and leave you gasping. From my experience, it does get better as you are able to see the wave coming and prep for it. To you and all of Fatima's family, may God cloak you in comfort, grace and peace. One day at a time is all you need to get through. Grief is not a race. Take your time. I was reminded of a quote on thankfulness at the end of the book Eat, Pray, Love, when you spoke about saying thank you many times, and when I thought about how grateful and thankful I was, for finding Fatima online during Covid. The quote says - " In the end, though, maybe we must all give up trying to pay back the people in this world who sustain our lives. In the end, maybe it's wiser to surrender before the miraculous scope of human generosity and to just keep saying thank you, forever and sincerely, for as long as we have voices." Thank you to Allah for the GIFT, BLESSING AND PURE RAY OF JOY that Fatima was. I am thankful that she sustained and continues to sustain us. During a time of such isolation and pain, she was a beacon of light to so many. Dear Renfred, your pain breaks my heart, yet your sensitive soul shines through. We see why Fatima loved you. I could feel your pain through this screen and could relate as i just tragically lost my only son a month ago ......im glad you did this talk it helps with the healing so does crying so ro that whenever and wherever. My heart goes out to you Renfred ..I bought Fatima’s book and watch lot of the videos and some I remember how she called sunny boy in her videos especially if he barks when she wanted him to remain quiet . I live in the Uk never had a chance to meet Fatima . If there is anyway I could send some funds to assist with sunny boys maintenance pls let us know . Would be grateful to help. You were always hiding from the camera, it must have taken so much for you to be in front of the camera......we the followers appreciate seeing the side of Fatima with her better half...THANK YOU.
Whenever I'm with my grand children they always request that we watch one of Fatima's cooking videos, my granddaughter was devastated to hear about the loss of Fatima.
Fatima had followers of all ages, she was loved by all.

Gone but never forgotten. Fatima touched my life in such a profound way. She taught me that regardless of happened in the past , we CAN rise above it all and stand tall. I'm a South African living in New Zealand and across the sea and miles and miles away she lifted me up. I am forever grateful that she shared herself with us. Lots of love and gratitude. Our hearts go out to you, thank you for sharing Fatima with us. I had the pleasure of meeting her in 2016, at Salt River community center, where she had the launch of her 1st cookbook. She was such a beautiful human being, she wrote a message in there that brought tears to my eyes, she made me feel like we knew each other. I will treasure her cookbooks and memories forever. I literally revisited a video of hers about 3 months ago and expressed how thankful and what a full circle moment it was for me to stumble upon her channel after so many years of not being as zealous as I used to be about the kitchen.
Listen, SHE TAUGHT ME HOW TO COOK. No exaggeration whatsoever. I was still in high school then and now I’m out of high school and finishing Uni. I’m a young black woman and I think it’s safe to say; I will make a good wife in terms of cooking for my household & inlaws.
She was SO gentle in her delivery and explanations. I always felt like she was next to me holding my hand through the then intimidating recipes.
My love for cooking AND baking has literally been ignited and who else to come back to than Mama Fatima? Only to find this sad, sad video…
