According to imdb he did Twelfth Night first as Pat Doyle, but it's hard to know when movies come out which came first. Either way it's gorgeous and from a young score.
The first time I heard _Non Nobis Domine_ by Patrick Doyle, I had turned on the car radio. Minnesota Public Radio's "Friday Favorites" program was on, and someone requested this song from the movie _Henry V_ . When I heard the song, I wanted to see the movie.
I listened to this over and over again after my brother, Christopher, died this past October in a motorcycle accident. Requiem in pace, frater Christopherus!
This is simply the best piece of choral music written in recent times. The orchestration and arrangement is superb. It does everything you want it to, culminating in the most joyous musical climax. The best performance I have heard and on a par with the film if not better. I wish I'd heard it live.
+Steve Roberts Yes, Patrick Doyle's 'Non nobis' for Branagh's _Henry V_ is a great and beautiful piece of music. On first hearing it many years ago when the film debuted, I assumed it was a traditional hymn from long ago. Amazing that it's contemporary. After a death in the family, the melody just came to me, from out of the blue. So I learned the latin words and sang it over and over, for my lost one and for all those who grieve. God bless Patrick Doyle and all music makers. God bless us, every one!
@@GildaLee27 It is based on a short Latin hymn used as a prayer of thanksgiving and expression of humility. There is a simple chant of it but not this melodious, multi-harmony in-the-round version of it. Very reminiscent of Handel's The Messiah.

I'm English, and Agincourt and Henry the 5th brings me here. And this piece always strangles me with emotion. But my Grand-fathers were at Mons, Passchendaele, and other places in WW1; and also at the Desert Rat campaigns with Monty in WWII. My uncles were Paratroopers who applied for SAS positions and my father was in the royal Hussars during his National Service. One thing I learned from them all: War destroys and makes us less human. It's something designed by governments that will always employ the working classes to do their bidding on a whim, at the cost of the decimation of their hamlets, towns and cities, without sending their own flesh and blood into the fray. Those mentioned in this note are long past, but there will always be something in me that will take up the gauntlet, if pressured, to fight on the side of righteousness. For my own risked their blood for such causes, and life altering endeavors. But all that aside..there is something in this that stirs the cockles of my breeding. It is there. It is in me...
The film of Henry V, which this was written for, recognises the dehumanising impact of war. As the King is lauded by the soundtrack, we see him struggling with the impact of the death all around. The appropriateness of the glory of the music is questioned by the visual images.
