I learned quite a bit while researching and testing this topic! Had no idea how dual-channel worked with mix capacities. Hope you enjoyed this one! Let me know what other morbid curiosities are floating around in your minds for me to investigate :-D
I've been wanting you to make this video for a LONG time. Can't wait to hear your findings!
I wonder if you can mix SSD's and SATA drives in RAID...
SSD's and HDD's in raid??
YoungTechReview i know it’s not very smart. Just wondering
Why did you stop using #ScienceStudio as your company name?
In a nutshell: It's fine. Yes, mix memory if you have to. Your system will run at the speed of the slowest module.
Thanks
Nothing a bit of oc can't solve.
What if your motherboard is the one that’s bottlenecking your ram speeds
@@UnitsChannel Doesn't quite work that way. My point was, the short answer is don't stress out over mixing different spec RAM. System's gonna run just fine, it will de-clock to the speed of the slowest RAM modules it finds. If your mobo is underperforming, that's a different matter.
Nowadays the memory controller sits in the CPU, that puts the MB mostly out of the question.
As example: with my old i5 I can run either 4.4 GPU + 2133 RAM or 4.5 CPU + 2000 RAM, but both at the "max" is not stable.
Be happy that OC is so easy nowadays.
Wait, wasn't this channel called "Science Studio" or my memory is too blured due to no nut november.

It’s killing me inside watching you put a ram in with one hand
Why?
Yeah, why? I do it all the time haha
Eduardo Yamamoto its more secure to put it in with 2 hands, also looks more professional.
Not only more secure but you want to apple equal pressure on both sides of the ram to prevent damaging it.
@@derpzu5838 Pros use 1 hand though, while using the other to drink a cold beer.
I can confirm that you can have mixed modules with no problems, at least if you choose similar rated modules with similar (or close enough) timings. I had 16gb DDR4 3200 of gskill trident z rgb memory, and wanted to get 32gb. I got a cheap pair of corsair vengeance lpx ddr4 3200 16gb modules and put them in my PC. I knew about the potential problems you could have with mixed ram so I went ahead and matched the speeds AND the timings manually. I got all of my ram modules to timings that were better than advertised! I went from 16CL to 14CL on all of my modules, and I believe I could get them to run as high as 3600mhz (possibly more) but my current motherboard (B350) only allows up to 3200mhz.
Edit: forgot to add that I havent had a single BSOD since I mixed my RAM. It's been stable for almost 2 years haha.

Thank you! So much back and forth on this from what I've read but your explanations sold me. I like to play it safe and will go with identical ram sizes.
Thank you for this useful info. I was looking to buy more ram at a higher capacity cause I'm running 2x8 right now but now I know to look at more than just the capacity (2x16, 2x32, etc.)
Oh its possible and I've done it many times, tho occasionally I run into where the system just don't like mixing some brands, I had one system where I thought the board was bad as it would stress test just fine and everything, but it would randomly freeze at idle, here the system has 2 different revision kits of Corsair Vengeance ram, they looked alike, but revisions were different, thats why I never immediately went to testing the ram as it worked just fine in another system for years.
Your channel's quality is crazy!!

Thanks for the video, man. I'm researching this and is good to have some answers. Also, do you recommend those Team Group RAMs? I found an 2666mhz for cheaper than an 2400mhz from Hyper X Fury. I still might get the Hyper X because my current module is from them (though 2133mhz) but part of me really wants to get the higher speed since I'm probably gonna upgrade my i5 6600 next year. Anyway, heard some bad things about Team Group and the price makes me unsure if it's a good choice.
Thank you so much for this video! i have been looking for a video talking about ram mixing and you summarized the whole topic in one video! Im adding another 8gb ddr3 ram to my existing 8gb ram soon
So if the modules are the same it wouldnt make any difference?
Like say a corsair module at 8gb 3000mhz at whatever timings paired with a g.skill module with the exact same specs wouldnt have a hitch
Yep
glad! now i can mix up black from tforce and white from corsair dominator!
They might even be made with the same die.
its been some time and ive looked into memory a bit more. theres also the different dies, die manufacturer, and the latencys..
Did you recently change the channel name from science studio? Did I miss an update video?
Thank you , you answered the exact questions I had. Keep up the good work. 👌👌👌👍👍👍
i have crucial ddr4 3600mhz cl16 and i was wondering if i could add 2 more sticks of corsiar ddr4 3600mhz cl16, would this work and will it be stable?
What I have seen, generally mixing different ram brand or even different speeds will work fine if the PC uses the speed of the slowest module as long as they are of the same ddr generation. However, for optimal performance, you should use identical modules. In my main gaming PC with an i7-6800k CPU, I have four identical 4 gb gskill ddr4 3000 MHz (16 gb total) ram modules in quad channel.
How about in laptop setups when the stock ram already solded in the motherboard? It is ok to insert another ram? Although they are not actually the same?
Same issue here.
Not.the speed but the capacity. Got 4GB soldered, wondering if I could add a 8Gb stick.along with it and will 12 GB in total run just fine in dual channel.
What did you do?
Thank you!!!! I have always wondered about this.
Very informative, thank you so much!
You still havnt told us why you changed your channel name.....
As for RAM i love corsair vengence RGB Pro
That's the RAM I wanted, I had gskill Aegis 16gb kit and was wanting to upgrade. Got Corsair Vengeance LED though which matches my actual build being red and black, so I was actually pretty happy.
Wait I have it
I'm up for whatever uses Samsung b-die and is in my mobo's QVL.
I learned the hard way as a teenager by mixing RIMMs and terminators. Thank GOD DDR SDRAM took over and Rambus RIMM RAM died.
Rambus RAM was quite bad at mixing unlike the DRAM we use these days
or the DDR SDRAM back then
RIMM RAM is funner to say though
@@TheXlen so sdram and dram is okay to mix?

Thank you for this video! Finally a video about mixed ram!
my question is i have 64gb ( 4x16 ) they are the same brand and module same frequency but two of the sticks have a timing different from the other two would be ok to mix timings ?
I've also found all this to be true Greg, especially the note about AM4 platforms being picky about memory relative to intel. I've built a number of am4 systems and the first couple were built with whatever was cheap or on hand, and they were never happy at xmp speeds, but choosing ram off the motherboard's QVL has always worked out for me.
Picking from the QVL probably guarantees compatibility. It still can be a pain if you want to find the best cross point of capacity and speed. It can take a while to find something that is still available.
this advice was better 3 years ago when I said it. It's mostly not a problem now. @@uncrunch398
An important addition, I think, people shouldn't assume that the memory is the same if they don't buy it as one package. On the same model the memory can be different, for some/many models they use more than one die. Corsair Vengeance for example is known for that, you might get SamsungB, you might get HynixC...
how much difference will thatt do? I have Corsair DDR3 1600MHz 2x4gb 8GB LP in my system now. so if I buy the current stock, will it be different from the old pc?
Great point. I have that exact ram. I had 2x8 gigs, so I upgraded to 4x8 by buying another 2x8 gig kit. Same brand, model, frequency, latency, etc, but different manufacturers. It caused me to have boot issues. It would work fine for a couple of months, but then it wouldn't boot unless I power cycled multiple times. Eventually it wouldn't boot at all until I removed the RAM and put it back it. Same thing would happen every couple of months.
@@mtbboy1993it caused me to have boot issues. My PC would turn on but wouldn't post. Sometimes I could get it to post, if I power cycled a few times, but eventually it wouldn't post at all. Removing the Ram and putting it back in seemed to temporarily fix the problem, but for whatever reason the problem reoccurs every couple of months. The only thing I can trace it to is the RAM upgrade and having different manufacturers. I don't know of a way to check the manufacturer, at least not online.
@@BamaShanks Usually it has a name on it. Unless dyou bought some random cheap ram. Best thing is to search for same Ram. But if it really differs within same model I don't know how to avoid that. Not had this issue. I rebuilt my old pc with two more sticks of corsair Vengeance ddr3 1600mh was 8gb upgraded to 16gb. No issue.
But if it worked for me does not mean it will work for you. I've not had issues with ram dying or being defective. So I went for Vengeance ddr4 on my new pc. No problems, 64gb. 👌
@@BamaShanks maybe it was faulty? I did not have much time on the rebuilt pc but it booted up fast no issues. But could have got exact same memory down to every single part. Who knows.
I recently bought a used kit that was meant to be the exact same as I already have (2x4Gb DDR3-1866) but turns out the seller sent me one 1866 and one 1600 stick. I tried running all four but I get BDOD due to memory and when running memtest I got some errors. According to this video it is possible? But how?
is it ok to mix cl15 and cl17 ram together? i bought a new 4gb ram but it has c17 and my main is cl15 is it ok to put them together?

I wish you'd covered mixing different voltages as well. I believe I ran into issue trying to add in a theoretically compatible 1.35v 4GB module into an existing three module 12GB system (3x4GB) where they were operating at 1.5v. This resulted in a boot loop as the mobo tried to, I think, train the memory and failed. Once I removed the new 1.35v module the PC was still stuck in a bootloop and I had to clear CMOS to get it to start. These were DDR3.
I want to add more RAM in my PC. What if i don't know voltage and latency of my RAM? Can i put whatever RAM with same speed if they have diffrrent voltage or latency?
Technically, on a laptop with soldered RAM and one SO-DIMM socket. It's essentially mixing RAM. I don't know if I like that though.
laptops with soldered ram are the worst. i had to remove the mobo from a cheap laptop to get to the dimm slot and it was an utter nightmare
@@jordydrop Yea. But unfortunately, if you want thin and light. It's literally your only option. I wish we could do a bit better on the engineering to make SO-DIMMs work on ultrabooks or have a new mem standard.

Thanks for referring to this subject. I have one module - HyperX Savage that is no longer available. I must mix it with different HyperX that has higher clock rates. Hopefully this will work as these are same company modules just different frequencies. I must adjust that in the BIOS though... In the past it wasn't so ez though... Now the DDR4 offers much more flexibility (sorry don't know about DDR3).

Thanks for the video. I have been wondering about this. I have 24 gigs one 8 gig stick of 3200mghz & one 16 gig sick of 2600 mhz. I was limited on $ when I first built my PC. I went with only 1 8 gig stick of ram with the intention to upgrade later on. Unfortunately my local shop only had the one 16 stick in stock so....... I haven't had any issues so far. But it really depends on your motherboard (if I'm not mistaken). I have any budget Asus prime b450m-a and it says in the manual It will work, but only like you said reverts to a common denominator.
