  • On a child's first birthday, there are special foods and rituals that are enjoyed in Korea. The first birthday party is called "dol-janchi," and it is always filled with rice cakes, or tteok.
Even in the past, when rice was scarce, Koreans of all classes would set aside rice to make rice cakes for a child’s first birthday. These rice cakes symbolized parents' sincere wishes for a child’s health and happiness.
In this episode of "Hansik of the Day," we look at the history of tteok, the different kinds that have developed in various regions as well as rice cakes that have been passed down through generations in noble families.

Unpopular opinion alert: I don't like tteok so much, it is too plain... Just with filling or in fishes like tteokbokki I like it..... But still I love the tradition ❤️

All of that money spent and that one year old little baby is not going to remember one minute of it! I had the first birthday party and I've seen pictures but I don't have one memory and nobody at 1 year old has the capacity to form a lasting memory. Elizabeth MD PhD nutrition science

And? It's part of the culture. Why be a party pooper?

You must be really fun at parties. Even if the child doesn't remember, the parents will remember, the guest will remember. The child can experience it again through others memories if they happen to be a good story teller. But whatever, you have a PhD in nutrition science, I better stay in my lane.

Uh you totally missed the point. For an M.D. PHD you sure are oblivious. The party is a cultural celebration from a time when infant mortality was very high in Korea. So it's not for the baby's memory as much as it's to celebrate a crucial landmark in an infants life, that they've made it past the critical stage of vulnerability. This ceremony used to be the 100 day ceremony, but because infant mortality is very low it's been drawn out to a year. Just like any celebration, it's usually not for the celebrant, but more for the people to take time and recognize and celebrate the person being celebrated. But obviously you wouldn't understand that because all your degrees have you losing brain cells from getting high off smelling your own farts. And if you have so much of a problem then why watch? Go somewhere else. I bet you're that type of person that comes in to a Korean restaurant and complains about the food being too salty, spicy, sweet and garlicky, huh? Why even come around us and bother us. Go somewhere and leave the rest of us who can appreciate eachother's cultures alone.

Culture aside, they had her after 16 years of marriage. Any couple anywhere would have a big celebration if they could.

It's not simply a birthday party. The tradition celebrates one year born of the child with the presence of relatives and community.....
