I owned both and used them for many vocal tracking duties. Sold the NT1-A as it sounds sterile harsh and edgy. TLM49 uses the same capsule as classic U47. The difference worth 1500 considering you have to use a lot of compression & EQ to make NT1 sounds right in your mix. Time is money.
i'm 2 years late: you explained it in 5secs, great job. I don't own these two but that's the point about an expensive and "cheap" microfone. And by the way, the "Interface" should be much better for expensive mics, so they can show what they able to do. A 250.- interface should not go with a 1360.- mic. It's like you drive a Ferrari in the city and you want to compare it to a Prius.

@@RogueFPS hi, the best interfaces are the apollo twin and the apogee duet, if you got one of these, you're on the highest level,. If you got the Avalon too, you're on a pro-level. Most people use the Avalon for the gain too, so no gain on the interface (if you want), the interfaces have high-class A/D converters.
@@johannmuster9726 The appollo twin and Apogee duet are both LESS than $1,000 that is NOT "on the highest level". LOL. Its ALMOST mid teir level though. haha.
IF you want to be on the "highest level" get a antelope audio goliath, Apogee symphony, Lynx aurora, avid hd madi, Prism orpheus, or my favorite Steinberg AXR4T. =-)

Surely NOT a 1500 difference, BUT the Neumann is stable, clean as it can be, way better
To my ears, the low end is a little more robust on the Neumann (with a smoother high end), while the NT1a has a little less low end with crisper highs (more presence). I'll take the Rode and save the money.
The Rode is a good budget mic, and can be ok, BUT without a doubt, the TLM 49 is WAY UP in a better class. The consistency, the warmth, the clarity, fitting into a mix, the head room in a mix, the look, the name quality, the range, and overall professional sound is very much so better than the rode. If you can't afford it, go with the Rode, but no question the TLM49 is in a higher more professional class, without debate.

LionWolf Tactical very true. High quality pres and proper room treatments, along with legit monitoring setups would have proven to bring out more differences between the two and make it much more obvious. The mics in these price brackets are all similar, but the NT1A is absolutely in the entry level category.
What would you suggest to buy under $300 if I'm looking for a warm and with not all that "s" and high frequency like the rode nt1a? The first nt1? (The gray one before they made it black)

Unfortunately recording into the HN-1 hand held recorder isn't going to give you a very good representation of what these microphones can really do. 1. The pres and the AD/DA converters in that hand held recorder are not very good. Recording with a better internal clock with better converters and pres is just as, if not more important than the mic itself. You will never be able to achieve the potential that the Neumann can offer!

I own and have recorded multiple times with an NT1 and recently purchased the TLM 49 and I have to say that the Rode is a great, great mic for the price; however, my recordings have been soooooo much better with the TLM 49. It was very worth the 1700.00.
xquisitaz nice. What preamp are you connecting your TLM 49 too. I usually have mine connected to an aphelion 230 but found I got way better results from the zoom h6 portable recorder.

When it comes to comparing two solo tracks or just simple talk rode nt1 a is sounding very impresive and can easily compete with any high budget mics. Our ears are simply enjoying brightness and full rich sound. But when it comes to mixing vocals thats where the nt1 a becoming at least for me a pain in the ass. Sound have no warm at all. Its just dont wanna sit in the mix with other sounds. The ammount of eq needed after all making the vocal sounds like garbage. In some cases to get vocal plesant to ears midrange has to be removed almost completely to the point where its becoming useless. Thats where the more expensive mics taking their place. Warmth.

The TLM 49's capsule is actually 33% larger. But ya might know that if ya read the specs, bro. You're not just paying for legacy or brand recognition... Well all know that, today, there are literally a TON of serviceable microphones out there. But this doesn't just stop with microphones. It speaks to everything in the recording chain from the mic to the mic pre, compressor, EQ and interface. There are dozens of options, hundreds of combinations. So you can add the Rode to the front of a premium signal path and, because it's a very good microphone, get very good results. But cut corners in your recording path and it begins to add up sonically in a big way. So let's take the cheap mic and run it through a similarly cheap mic pre / compressor / EQ / interface / $100 pair monitor chain... Then run the 49 through a 1073 / LA-2A / AVID HDX Burl / Westlake monitor chain and compare... It's not just the mic. But all things equal, there is still a very noticeable difference in these two mics.
I'm sure some people are buying "this stuff" just to say they have it. Generally, the people who buy "this stuff" are professionals or aspiring professionals who are seeking the best signal path they can afford or upgrade to at the time.

Lo Knows, Sort Of Ha! Me, too. Of course, if one's skillset doesn't warrant it, what's the point, eh? I mean, a $10,000 drum set is not gonna help a kid who just picked his or her first pair of stcks yesterday, right? There is a point, beyond which, good becomes "great." At the upper range, the focus of the discussion switches from which is "better" to how are they "different." Not to mention, you recorded this comparison using a Zoom recorder. tsk tsk tsk. It's like driving a Ferrari in gridlocked traffic and saying "See? It's just a car..." :c)
NT feels harsh compared TLM. TLM does not require much post processing, you get quality audio without adding any significant post processing. Latest NT isn’t bad, but TLM helps you saving that processing time that you need for NT. In long term TLM 49 is better investment.
The difference in these two microphones in reality can be fixed with EQ. So definitely the Mics price is not justified and I would buy multiple NT 1As instead of just one of the TLM 49.

I’ve got national contracts and I used to use the NT1, that got me the jobs, but I recently got the TLM49 and the clients have expressed how much more pleased they are with the sound; so that weighs a lot when they can tell the difference and offer more work on the fact.
It's not worth the $ PERIOD. You can warm up the sound with some Slate Virtual Tape. Save your money.
Testing a Neumann mic in a zoom recorder….. yikes
I had the TLM 102, 103 and 193, plus the Tube Rode K 2. The difference, to me, was obvious from the first second I connected the TLM 49. The others are all good, I'd put the K2 in second place, but not close. Not a subtle "better" but an obvious better. Warmth, depth, clarity.

Brandon Harris Yes, I own both and I would never record vocals alone with the NT1 unless there was some specific sound I was looking for on a background track maybe. The difference is huge and my recordings have been so much better since I bought the TLM 49

The TLM for sure has a unique warmth to the mic. Basically, I can hear more of the character in your voice with the TLM49 mic. The NT1-A sounds clear, but there is almost no warmth to it, so it doesn't give a good representation of the voice speaking into it. Like with the Rode, I can obviously tell a person is speaking into it, but with the TLM, I can tell WHO is speaking into it, which for me, says a lot about a mic.

I have a signal chain of tlm 49>mogami cable>LA610>warm audio76>universal audio apollo. The better your signal path the more you will bring out the character of the microphone. When I first started recording it's cheap gear the vocals sounded really thin. When I made my upgrades you could hear all of the small details you didn't hear before. It's funny when I first got my TLM 49 they only cost 1500, now they jumped up in price and to me it seems like this mic is a studio work horse.

I totally agree...$1700? Thats a lot of money, but you also have to consider that you are going to be using this mic more than once. If you are recording music constantly then you are actually making an investment that, in my opinion, is worth every penny. To say that you would have it in your studio as a "show stopper" is rediculous. There are certain things in the recording industry that you don't skimp on and a microphone....especially if it is your only one, is one of them. No amount of software is going to improve or correct the integrity of your sound once the signal flow has pased through the chain of hardware. It really depends on how serious you are and what kind of results you can accept at the end of the day. Im not saying one of these mics are better than the other. My point is, if you want your vocals or whatever signal you are passing through to sound better, don't look surprised when you can't get there with a cheapo microphone. There are however, many cheap microphones that do sound great. Rhode ntk was my first condensor mic and I was always inpressed with it.

Case is: Do you make enough money to justify the TLM49? If that's not the case, get the NT1-A, it's an impressive mic.
NT1A is not the best for this comparison as it is much brighter, some people do not like this, the NT1 would be a better choice for this comparison..
As for expensive microphones being better with the SPL, not really as the expensive U87 can handle only 127db.
I find Neumann very expensive for what they are, but at the same time people pay 1800 for a foldable phone so Neumann website is correct, their microphones are not expensive.
The problem is that the quality is affordable with much more affordable microphones.
NT1A is the BOSS its has a boost on the LOW ENDS

The NT1A is known to be hyped in the high frequencies, sibilant and harsh for many sources. To many the TLM 49 sounds dull because it has less HF but it takes EQ like a charm and you can dial in more HF without them being harsh.. ;)
The Rode is brighter, and for the read you did, I prefer the Rode. Sound over price any day.
Having watched a great many mic reviews, there are so many things to take into consideration. One, if not at the top of the list it should be close to the top, is WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO USE THE MIC FOR? If you are doing professional level singing/voice over, clearly the Neumann should be your choice. However, if you are doing something like a podcast, gaming live stream, etc, the Neumann is absolutely a ridiculous purchase (overkill). The differences in what goes over the stream is probably indistinguishable.
Now also near the top of the list of consideration should be DOES THE MIC 'FIT'/'FLATTER' THE VOICE/INSTRUMENT BEING RECORDED. If you take ten mics that are extremely close, regardless of price (lets keep the sub $100 ones out of this part of the discussion) and have ten different people use each mic, what flatters one person may not flatter another.
We can go on and on about which of this two is better, but as one can see, there are some many things to take into consideration.
My thoughts, for the average person watching this video, and these are you ONLY two choices, go with the Rode. Chances are if you are doing something that requires something like the Neumann you probably aren't researching on RUclips (this or any other channel) for a microphone and have "The Pros from Dover" giving you advice and testing with you.

To EQ to the specifications of the mic is to assume that the specifications of that mic are perfect for your voice. I don't know a single case where that is a perfect recording. When you EQ, you work to bring out the best parts of your vocal chords, suppress the unfavorable ones and cut lows that are unnecessary maybe sweeten up the highs a little. That is the purpose of using an EQ on a vocal track. What you are suggesting is that we can take any mic on the market and make it as good as a well built mic that is obviously used in professional studios for a reason. Hell, we might as well take all the Neumann U87's and Sony's out of the studios and go with MLX 990's in that case. It sounds nice but doesn't work that way unfortunately.
Listening to this comparison, I'd be inclined to EQ the Neumann to make it sound like the Rode!
Many affordable mics sound better than the neumanns after they are modified. Even the tube mics. The cost to get a mic modified is about $250.

I don't know why, but I liked the Rose better. It sounded less muffled that the Neumann. I guess the signal is hotter than the Neumann.

You sound much better on TLM-49, just saying...
Theres a big frequency bump in the high end of the NT1-a after 10K and also around 3.5K and 150hz. Its also rolling off the low end around 100hz. All of that said the TLM 49 is obviously the better mic but the Rode NT-1 NOT the Rode NT1-A would've been a better comparison as the Rode NT1 has a much FLATTER frequency response and more low end.
All of that said the TLM 49 has a huge frequency bump at around 3K and 10K. BOTTOM LINE....NO not a $1,500 difference but if you can afford it YES.... TIME = MONEY

The difference between this too microphones really is minimum. But that's the difference between amateur and professional equipment. Really close, but not the same. And this tiny improvement shows all the details. Give a natural body to your voice. If the question is money - Rode. If you testing quality - Neumann. But your asking about "money/quality" X "worth it?". It depends of your goals. If you're a professional, you got to go with Neumann. If you working with economics, Rode. That's how I feel about it. :)

Marco Camargo If you're truly a professional, you'll get the goods with either. Put a rode track in front of a skilled sound engineer, and nobody would even notice it was a cheap mic used. Obviously, the Neumann is the better mic, but without a direct comparison, how many people can hear something and call out the make/model of mic used on a vocal piece? The fact that rode put that level of quality within reach for the masses is impressive. I do agree though. Spend the money if this is your living.
Brought the nt1a and I feel it really suits my voice as I have a brighter slightly higher mezzo soprano voice however not too high to trigger the frequency response making it harsh like ppl say absoloutley love the nt1a with my voice. The Neumann I think is more suited to deeper Sinatra type voices so would make my voice sound wierd

Rode NT1-a is good, but it is distorted shrill harsh and edgy. There are other mics in the price glass that has a smoother top end. I recommend the Behringer B2, or you could get the Rode NT2-a whitch is an improved version of nt1-a
The Rode NT1, rather the the NT1a is a much more even/flat response mic. I think I would go with the NT1 rather the the Neumann and buy a Neve preamp with the money I saved. Just my opinion....Nice video.

TLM 49 is the best but NT1A good at the price range
He misses the fact of just how low-noise the NT1-A is, and what purpose it's designed for. It's not so much for vocalists, although it can be very effective for quiet breathy singers. Where is really shines, is when you put it in front of a slammed guitar amp. He goes into that a bit, when talking about how a higher dollar mic is going to handle the load better, but not so much in this case, because that's where the NT1-A shines, and since he doesn't play guitar, he's not really emphasizing just how good the mic is in those situations.
EQ the sibilant edge out of the NTA-1? I wish that worked and then I’d have something more than a $250 paperweight. Condensers, in general do not take EQ well but with the Rode, all life is sucked out of it.

i have been serioulsy been trying to put that comparison together for you, but everytime i sit down to get something going, i come across issues with BOTH of my devices giving off a terrible line his. Its driving me insane. Im trying to single out the problem but its driving me made. i think these devices make my mics SUPER sensitive, and when connecting them to my Yamaha mixer it somehow amplifies the noise, which is totally weird, they actually sound better going through my mbox then my mixer. I feel like im over lookign something but i want to make sure my gear is whisper quiet when i finally but that vid together
The TLM 49 is better for professionnal singers since sometimes, when they reach a higher note, it will "distortion way less" as you mention it. But it's less "crispy" as the NT1-A. But, for those who understand "professionnal recording" you can get the "crispy crystal clear" sound when you edit it with your application ( ex: Protools ). As for the NT1-A, well, it's good for amateur singer who don't care too much about the "global" end sounding results as it does the job. I mean, I would use it for my projects... ( if I have no choice ). It's still a good mic but... if I had the money, I would go for the TLM 49 as it's doesn't take too much "highs" when you record. It's like "sony earphones"' Sony tends to "boost" the highs and the bass to make your music sound "crips"... which is good... but it's not the natural sounding you get when you listen your song from a professional studio speakers for instance. Hope this helps. ( as for the price, it's relative to all, I would rather buy the 700$ KSM shure 44 ( price varies now from different sellers ) which would fit my needs. So it depends what you wanna do with your mic. Not how much money you have.
Not just about lows and highs ..The Neumann is less strident. There is no sloppy to the signal like the Rode. The Neuman is more in tact. I own Rodes and Neumanns. This is just an observation in this video.

Yeah for sure, but i wonder since it is a "cheaper" microphone, if its the brightness or maybe just a little to high in the mids,, bottom line it is a great mic and you cant beat it. I use it way more then TLM-49

I just did a video on it on my channel using the Avalon 737 sp voice channel strip. Unfortunatly, the warm mics would start at around $400 and up from my experiences. If you want to avoid the high frequency's, then i strongly recommend the Shure SM7b, its more of a broadcasting, voice over mic, occasionally used for music. It will DEFINELTY cut the high frequencys. Or you can consider using a shotgun microphone like the Rode NTG2, $269, i use that one as well and have made a video on that. Good luck!

Great video. For a mic under $300 the Rode NT1A sounds great, if you’re on a tight budget and can’t spend $1600 on a mic it’s a no brained. The Neumann sounds fuller and warmer, but kinda agree...does it sounds like a $1500 difference? Especially if you’re running the Rode thru a decent mic pre? Maybe not so much. But if your charging clients and recording projects and making money, you can make the. Neumann pay for itself in the end, and the name brand definitely carries more weight.
Holy crap ive never heard the Rode sound so bad anyone who cant tell the difference probably isnt listening on monitors because this is not even close the rode sounds thin harsh noisy the tlm sounds like its already been processed ran through expensive hardware

Shame you didn't have the Rode NT1 to compare with. Its far more refined and balanced with an incredibly low noise floor. Its a completely different design to the NT1a

The rode nt1a proximity effect is something you only want to use on a professional artist lol which is crazy....cause if you have someone who constantly moves tlm 49 is better becuase that proximity effect isnt so harsh...but its a benefit too for the rode nt1a....I love it ...you ge tthe most for your money

This is my thing the rest of the vocal chain matter so on an amateur system no...but if you have a neve board or....UA apollo with a great river preamp or you know setups like that you can hear a big difference and it makes the cheaper mics sound better....i go more for charactee than what sounds better im more of a what sounds different type of guy...and i like the darker toned mice because 90% of mics will be made for the best clarity possible so i know its easy to find a mic with nice top end and such

The TLM-49 might sound considerably different if it were not listening to your shoulder while you speak towards the body of the mic ;-) The TLM-49 does have a bit of a compressed sound, and the top end is EQed in the circuit. Their idea was to make a mic that sounds "Finished", and the NT-1has a bit of zing in the top, often perceived as presence. Jim Williams did a very good job designing the circuit of the NT-1, it's very quiet, and a decent mic. (It mods well) The TLM uses a very fine capsule, in fact it is half of the K-47 capsule, not the same one as in a vintage 47, and the TLM is not trying to sound anything like a U-47 or an M-49. It can be good on a voice, and it's nice on a kick drum!
i wonder if you roll off the highs on the rode, it might be comparably the same. otherwise they're very different.
Tlm49 uses a 34 mm k47 (u47) capsule darker nt1a uses the typical Chinese 32mm k67 (u87 style) capsule brighter
I have NT1A I wonder why there's an Echo/Reverb sounds on my voice every time I use USB connection on my audio mixer to my laptop even I did not use any effects on it, but when I switched to RCA connection there's no echo. what do you think where that echo coming from? I want to use usb connection.
Hello Man, could you help me please. I've this Micro too but the sound after recording seems to be a little too bad... compared to another microphone that i've (AT 3035). Do you use a treatment eq to make the sound clearer? Would you have some settings to advise me to optimize the sound of the microphone ? I use a Appolo Twin with the neve preamp uad, as a preamp. The TLM sounds better
No matter how expensive your mics are, a bad room makes em sound like crap........
Even I as a nub kan hear the difference, the TLM49 is the better of them.
With the price in regards I rather go with Rode NT1a or NT2, but it's only a hobby for me.

Lo Knows, Sort Of yea but, it may also be a difference in frequency response that I'm hearing etc. I'm not sure how mutch I can trust my headphones.

The rode nt1 is best for beginners the tlm 102 is best for the pros

i dont know why peopel with no studio would buy a neuman because these sic expensive mics only works in a sound isolated area
Greetings, I'm new to your channel. I own the tlm 49, and I love it. That being said I'm a lil jealous of some of your gear, but most of all I'm super Jealous of that best dad ever kid project in the background... :) I'm subbing just for that.
I've notice that you rarely use your avalon to record, may I ask why? I would think that $2k best would be used for Everything!!! Lol I would use it to order pizza at that price point...
around that 200-300 the best 3 brands and mics ive ever used was NT1-A/NT1 (New Model), AT 2020/2035/2040 and Blue Microphones Bluebird and Baby Bottle
Antoine Yetts try blue encore 300. i've had great result with it. i'm not sure why it's not as popular as its cousins.
I have a Rode and defiantly have to attenuate the highs around 8 to 11k.

I think the Rode mic sounds more bright and the Neumann sounds dull. I would pick the Rode over the Neumann even if I was a millionaire.

i think the rode is good for a 30-second hyped promo sound. but the neumann would be better for long-format audio books, since it is smoother.
Neumann slays it. The Rode is fine on its own. But dang. Huge disparity. Great video, man.

That zoom is great! The Rode is more radio. You can always cut the top & boost the low mid for the price. Thanks for the demo

My first mic was the Rode NT1-A and it made me a lot of V/O money, but over the years I've added a lot of other mics to the locker and now I own the TLM 49 and it's a no brainer. Neumann wins hands down. But like others have said your digital signal chain is also critical in improving any mics sound quality. The Rode is a great starting point, but if you're serious about V/O's you need to trade up, just like when you're playing Midnight Club. You're never going to beat the better cars with your entry level vehicle.
