- $100 mic vs $1,000 mic vs $10,000 microphone on vocals and in a mixed trap production. This comparison demonstrates the differences between recording a vocal through different priced mics. This shootout also tests the 3 microphones thru an analog preamp EQ and Compression. Do you think the price is justified by the increase in quality? What is the best mic? Listen to the shootout and decide for yourself! You can record vocals without a booth if you have enough acoustic treatment to cover most of the hard surfaces of your recording room.

I've gotten so used to watching these videos that I don't even see him as a puppet any more.
What puppet?
Never was a puppet to begin with 👌🏻
Idk what your saying, Are you talking about Reid?
@@ReidStefanMusic You should make a video on Boss voice pedals
For a second I was annoyed that he touched the pop filter during the record of the song. How can we figure out how the sound differs if you are pushing against the mic while recording.
REALEST PUPPET IN THE GAME
I thought the MXL 900 sounded great considering it's just 100 dollars.
So basically, In order to take full advantage though of the 10k mic you still are going to need 1-3k processing gear.
Sean good one lmao
that's correct, and expensive outboard gear will make your cheap mic sound better too!
Reid Stefan so I’m better off investing into onboard gear
His preamp and compressor are easily in the 5K range together. Jesus fuck.
Not true. If you have a Sony c800g you will be ok. That’s all you need plus a decent interface
The Sony sounds so nice tho! Is it worth 10 times more than the Neumann? I don't think so. But I bet the differences can be heard even more when listened as WAV files, instead of RUclips sound quality which applies lossy compression to it.
It's beyond worth it for Sony to price the c800 where they do, to keep the respect that it has. Only the like... 1% of the music industry records on it lol. Isn't for home studio people at all. A home studio owner could very well budget and cop one of the higher tier Neumann's tbh
that c800 is just unfair. Ridiculous quality...
Great shoot out 🙌🎧 "100k cause I'm working every day" 😂
Still using my 18 year old AT4050. Stills sounds great
That's a great underrated mic
I have a 4040 right now and I’m thinking of upgrading to the 4050 but only for vocals... is it a better upgrade for cardioid ? I want smoother and not so much high end harshness
the sony sounds much crisper in the song. seems like the delays caught that extra detail too. cool, thanks for sharing!
I liked the Neumann the least by itself but actually liked it the most with the music. Toy around a bit between 2k-5k and above 10k and I think all mics fit the bill
It’s the first video I’m watching from this channel and this puppet is iconic already 😂
Conclusion? Get an SM7b.
They all sound the same in the song
No, they didn't...
@@OSCOMusic yes
@@charlieproduction9897 goes to show how many people are listening on poor headphones or in untreated rooms.
@@OSCOMusic or the ear is the problem. so why invest 15k if ppl cant hear the dif
@@OSCOMusic Wow. What do you think the music you release where will be listened to? Everyone goes to a professional studio and listen to Eminem there? This is what 90% of sound engineers don't understand.
Definitely doesn't seem like the difference in sound is represented by the difference in cost! Good to know, I'll save my $10k!
Don’t pretend you had 10k to drop on a microphone anyways 🤨
@Snazzelicious Like many other expensive brands out there of all sorts of products it’s all about the status it gives you among your peers than anything else. I’ll tell you right now you’ll have a much easier time finding artist to come record at your studio and pay you money if they know you have a $15,000 microphone compared to some hundred dollar off brand microphone even if their quality was exactly the same. Just like you’ll find a hotter woman to sleep with If you’re wearing a Gucci outfit instead of some thing from Walmart and driving a Lambo instead of a Honda Civic. 💯
The truth is that consumers do not care about gear, they only want to hear good music. If you are a singer and you know your stuff you will sound great in a $40 dollar microphone. It all comes down to how you master the things you got. Going for expensive gear at first can be the worst thing you could do if you don't know how to use it.
STR8 FACTS ON FACTS ON FACTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The best advice
MASTERING fix everything ... wooooord
Im currently recording on akg220 and vocals are turning out good (the heavy process i do) and one of my friend that knows pretty much good about mics said i made that cheap mic sound expensive. Now im about to jump on a expensive mic
Agreed, I would spend more money than $40 😂 , so far you can really achieve great mix if you work on it, I would not spend 10000 on a mic there are really good plugins and mic emulations out there.
Here's a story, when I was teenager, when 18 was old enough to buy beer, Schlitz and Budwieser were priced the same, and tasted the same, for whatever reason, they decided to stop advertising Schlitz, and dropped the price, Budweiser went up... in a few years, if you told anybody you drank Schlitz.. .What??? you drink that nasty garbage? LOL ... it's all perceived value..... there isn't 15 cents worth of difference in how these mics sound... but you can believe if I spent 10,000 on a microphone, I would convince myself it sounded better.... and to so called audiophiles who have come to recognize what certain mics sound like are under the same delusion.... but to people with no such predudice, AT BEST they may sound a tad different.... but different isn't better.... it's different... then take the masses, nobody notices the tiny nuance that you are hearing... that all said, I'm a photographer and filmmaker, I understand that one needs to impress their clients, when I'm getting day rates, I set up all the bells and whistles.... so I get that.... but the world doesn't care...... I'm no singer, there isn't a microphone in the world that will make one out of me.... it's the voice behind the mic, just like what the photographer and filmmaker points their camera at..... :) So if you aren't out to impress a client, get the cheapest that gets it done.... I like your reviews...
Come On In We're Dead all the mics sound every different especially after processing. There is a couple thousand dollars of difference between the sound quality maybe you just can’t hear it all that well.
@@bigstevedzn2353 no he’s right, they might sound different but not better

Just a convenient timestamp for comparing the mics' raw tone.
Awesome videos brother! Learnt a lot from you, and i'd love to have a setup like yours one day
Tlm 49 is something, woow
I just realized that this channel is ran by a puppet. I think it’s cute. 😆
Migos used a bluebird and a blue spark on No Label 2
proof?
Loren Ferrer look at their noisey episode.. they got a bluebird in a closet they used to record in
Yes but the spark was going though outboard gear go back and watch
And still sounded like shit
There rich so it didnt sound that shitty clearly.
Come on that song was hot #1hunnak now I stack it inna day yuh😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥 6:30
Dat American flag on the mic is rad lmao
Hmm now I'm interested in budget preamps and compressors for tracking
I mean Soulja Boy produced and sang "Crank That" with an internal laptop mic using all FL samples, plugins and synths (bootlegged). What he make like 400 million off that song at the end of the day... Everyone can do the math.
UrbanLikwid he then re-recorded the song in a studio once the label decided to push it
Guess it was still good enough to get to the label to even get re-recorded in the studio.
Eynoux Adjoumani Did he really?
@@reekrodriqguez6552 I thought too, but i'm not so sure, there is no true source about that, i can't find the original version recorded with this famous laptop mic. But what we can say is that XXX Tentacion recorded a lot of his songs with laptop mic and it gives a certain particular aspect, of course it doesn't mean that you can throw your expensive gears.
@@EynouxLaStar I don’t think he re recorded it
I hate the harshness of the sony
I just want to know why my female vocals sound thin like paper, but when I hear pro sessions they sound huuuuge, warm and thick. I feel like the song example didn’t get that point across because they ended up sounding very similar and thin after the plugins. The Sony definitely sounded brighter and fuller in the shootout before music though.
Damn, I actually like the MXL a whole lot more than the Neumann ! The TLM sounds quite muffled and caboardy to me, even if the low-end is better defined.
Dude you are an artist... this puppet is just amazing..
Can you recommened a GREAT vocal tracking compressor for under 1k? Rap/trap and pop vocals. Cant afford cl1b but cant find another high end option
Realist puppet in the game Realist puppet in the game Realist puppet in the game! 100k I stack it in day. Lol da puppet master!
I think most important is still the mic placemant and room acoustic. If you use it right, you can take much out of the cheap mic.
absolutley true! but signals recorded with a better mic you can easily handle in the mix
The C800g is tube mic and tube mics generally sound better. They have a clear rich sound all around.
i think for podcasting and some sampling a 100$ mic is just fine.
I love the way the tlm 49 sounds.
Reid, your videos are good. But what's the point of the whole _puppet_ shtick? IMO it's creepy as fuck. I'm getting uncanny valley vibes from your videos.
OMG.... I will take that $100 mic thank you very much!!!! VERY impressed... VERY! After all, a 10K mic has absolutely nothing to do with a million-selling hit record!! FACTS!
it does bro trust...
UKNOWN O no it doesn’t lmao.
Tat Neuman is honestly perfectly fine for using in a professional student and after mixing and mastering and everything with a track you really wouldn’t even be able to guess which was used.
@james Someone Dre or Kanye can use any mic and spit out a hit at this point.
@@johnbach2380 I think there was a vid of Kanye making this point in about a $1000 mic
I use Rode nt2a .. that was awesome
.
Nt1 here.. no regerts
The Sony sounds so good.... the low mid build up/mud just goes away entirely
It's crazy the big money difference you can pay for a minimal sound difference ... Definitely the sony sounds the best .... I own one and I love it... I wanna buy a cl1b next ... Nice vocal chain bro !!!!
I'm in the same spot! Got a c800g and love it! I've got an Avalon 737, BAE1073, Apollo Twin and an Avedis MA5. The only real thing I need that makes my Vocal Chain complete is a real Tube Tech CL1B!
I don’t hear much a difference, I might be sound deaf tho
I don't hear much of a difference But I'm chalking that to RUclips's compression of the Audio.
You can hear a big difference between the MXL to the Neumann but you can't hear much of a difference, if at all, between the Neumann and the Sony.
$100 to $1000 Mic = Worth it
$1000 to $10000 Mic = Might be worth the bragging rights.
I think the quality from the $100 mic and the Neumann are the same but the sound a tad different
Where can I find a Sony c800g nowadays to purchase? It’s so rare to find now ;(
Bury all 3 in a full production with EQ and FX and I know I couldn't hear a difference. Maybe on a whisper quiet ballad with a female vocal. Your masking that little bit of difference after pre anyway, the MXL in the right hands would be better than the Sony used by a novice. I guess the catch is the experienced engineer would be using the higher dollar mics already. I always check the gear list with every studio I've recorded at and if I pay I want those higher dollar mics. We would all have that Sony Mic if we could justify the price. That MXL sounds great in this soft spoken test but would it handle a powerful singer throwing a ton of vocal pressure at it ? Maybe in another video :) . A whisper to a scream !! Then compress that down to MP3 which is probably 80% of what the world listens to now.
QUESTION?? : Would every hit that's been on the charts in the last 5 years not have been a hit if recorded on the MXL? LOL, It wouldn't have changed a thing. A great singer is a great singer no matter the mic with the exception of the $20 toy mics out there. Ask Bono about the SM 57!! Just my opinion, I'm sure none of the audio gearheads would agree.
Yeah I will raise the 80% to 99.99% (for real)
Ever thought of making a freestyle song based off of your “Realest Puppet... In... The Game” intro?
How the hell did you find a tlm49 for 1k?
I see prices going for $1,800.00
You have good credit or are you a trust fund child ?
YEAA BOIII or I produce vocals for people every day... 🤷🏼♂️
Reid Stefan just messing with you. What are your rates ?
It is so funny when they are stripped of how close they are. The Sony is def warmer, bit 10 grand warmer? Just throw an eq on it
It's all about the pre and the comp
shouldnt you be singing or using an instrument when you test mics.... i dont thinking gently speaking matters a whole lot to a mic. I think even $60 is too much for "one hundred k" speaking...
Obviously the Sony is king of vocal mics but I preferred the mlx in the song example. The crappyness sound went good with the song imo lol
can i have the sony one, when you're done with it?
this fucking cracked me up. great video
😂😂😂
Not gonna lie, I cant say that the song at the end sounded better with Sony than it did with other mics
A reasonable rate of return would say, NO! The Sony isn't worth the overpriced hype. Keep the vids coming. That puppet rocks!
True! I think for Sony the real price should've be around 5000-7000$ brand new, as it was back in the 90s-early 2000s
Very interesting video. I can hear the difference post processing. One question: if I can't afford all of the outboard gear (I'm looking at the TLM 49 and a UA 610 solo) will I still get a lot out of the Neumann resolution with processing the the EQ and compression in the DAW as opposed to outboard??
That "one hundred K" song sounded like shit in all three instances,
Quá khập khiễng kkk
🤔 interesting could then almost use any cheap mic and just EQ to taste maybe
Thanks 👍
@Yippee Skippy I think you can still make a $100 mic sound super good
@Yippee Skippy knowing how people want to show off especially in the music game, I don’t think they would want to save money. Also, when you add everything else to the song (if that’s what your recording) then it won’t be noticeable. On top of that 99% of people won’t/can’t hear the difference because there not in a high end studio or environment to hear those differences. So I’m still confused on how a $100 mic is bad
Ps. Most people when talking on this subject want to justify buying there expensive mic so please keep a clear head when replying
@Yippee Skippy one thing I forgot was that I recently picked up a $50 mic just to see if I could make it sound like a more up in price mic and it didn’t sound more lumpy or have any more “horrid coloration” then $500-$2,000 microphone.
@Yippee Skippy also have you even tried making a low end mic sound good, if not then you wouldn’t understand the POV that I’m coming from
First of all, I want to thank you very much for your videos! very and very useful video. But! I would like to ask you, more saw about processing vocals. interesting topic.
You may also need a 10k speaker to hear the difference 😂
I liked the $1k mike best. The expensive mike sounded thin.
bro rode nt 1 sounds 100x better than this sony shit
Heyo @Reid, do you also recommend them to track/capture instruments? Thank you for the tut man 👍🏽
hello all good, I would like to know.
why my behringer umx610 controller is not picking on ableton live 10,
old mind on ableton 9 got it normal? help me thanks
The Sony Gives you top level quality. It’s so much better it puts the other ones to shame. U87 would have made things interesting In my opinion. I sold my u87 it was a good mic but the Sony is what I was looking for. 10k is a lot but like he said you get what you pay for
Wait till you dicover the Manley Ref C and switch the tube to the Telefunken, it's almost Sony, not Sony, but the closest of all mics on the market. And the best that it has it's own characteristics and personality. No mic will ever sound like Sony, and nor even a Sony mic will sound like another one. Trust me, if Drake/Dre/Eminem etc. would've use let's say the TLM102(remove the inner foam from inside), all the people would've use it. It's just a name and hype, in the right hands any good mic (not cheap ones) can sound JAW DROPPING.
P.S.
Manley was used by Shawn Mandes, Katy Perry, XXXTENTACION, Avril Lavigne, Benny Blanco, Bad Bunny and many more.
@@eddwardmusic I completely aware about the Manley Ref C. Great mic. Not my preference if Sony C 800 G is a option. Telefunken 251 on the other hand is my preference out of all the mics. All the mods to the mics aren’t my thing. I don’t know a lot about that exact for swapping tubes out maybe
Why this puppets lineup better than mine 😭😭
Sony c800 G Mic Wins!!
100 dollar one sounds better on your voice
Your intro is annoying change it
This is why puppets should be allowed to vote
Sony C800g x Analog = Lil' Wayne
I'm wondering if the Sony might actually be one of the only (if not the only) high tier mic that will depreciate in value in the future. It represents such an extremely hyped, bright and frankly almost "chinese" sound (without the thin sound of chinese capsules) that a lot of people have wanted for a long time. A lot of detail, super bright and just in your face the whole time. But at the same time, people are really moving away from that sound more and more, and going for the vintage sound. I know that I wouldn't really know what to do with it. My Flea 49 is on the verge of almost being too bright, and it's not even in the same brightness league as the Sony, even though being the same quality and tier.
The sony is almoust annoyng how sensible is it
i love u reid great execution on the sound test, keeping the same inflection on each mic. no one does that. thanks
the TLM sounded a little over driven when the EQ/Compressor and Pre were enabled. but still. Very good comparison
i heard that too
Haha TNX for the tutorial .....Awesome & Fun & useful
Not much difference between the three lol
Video was great but the song example was bad, if you put autotune and all that unatural stuff on it, it won`t make a big difference. If my songs would be "saying 100k 8 times" i would record them in the bathroom with a Rode NT1. You should rap or sing for real, clean, than we can talk about quality
Het reid I’m about to get a Sony c800g how many times a year to I have to change the tube?
When I was using it every day I was changing the tube every other year. I found a local repair guy in LA who changed the tubes affordably. I purchased a collection of backup tubes knowing they have a life expectency
@@ReidStefanMusic I see well thx for letting me know and thank you for responding Reid!

It's literally the same thing
Your videos are always fun and informative. Very much enjoyed this one.
now make the 100$ vs the slate digital that's my point right here mixing skill is way more important any 300-400$ mic will do the job now days
My vocal chain C800G/Flea47> BAE 1073MPF> TT CL1B/Retro 176/ 1176LN> Burl BAD4. 9 times out of 10 I'm using the Sony C800G!
This is an Excellent microphone. Of course all it’s components are excellent in quality. Keep up the good work Sony.
Femi Osusa I call it the Saucy C800 😉
Whole LOOPS, brother?
Great vid old chum, I like your style.
Sir so basically for streaming on twitch, let's just take the MXL 990? What about plugins on OBS? Should sound the same on all 3?
1st flat smooth sound like it's rolled off on both ends of the eq
2nd mic has a big smooth bassy sound 3rd clean high end
Like all those mics are great depending on what sound you go for basically
$10,000 mic = Emperor's new clothes.
The only diff i heard is cheap one has great mid range but sucks at high end,mid one also have good high end but sounds a bit boomy, the sony one has amazing airy high end and great in low freqs too
They sound the same just Sony a little bit more crispier
You call that a song? lmao That isn't singing dude. And your voice has so much sibilance it is almost toxic on any mic.
I can't tell much of a difference...
The Sony is not the pinnacle of vocal mics. It rarely finds use. The intonations are clearer with the TLM49 here. With the Sony, the singer requires to project second order harmonics to not have the track sound too crisp. It's useful to focus onto the consonant attack and how solidely the vowels settle on their pitches. Both qualities will facilitate the incorporation into a mix.
Would the same effect to the mics be created if using vst versions of each hardware? I’d love to see the difference with hardware and vst using each mic
puppet? No puppet. You're the puppet!
I heard a lot of similarity between the Sony and the 49 Both full sounding and smooth the mxl wasn’t that bad I’ve done songs on a 990 and the results turned out pretty killer
