4:31 " geek out at stuff like this." - Love your passion for this stuff... I can always count on getting great feedback about all things cameras! Thanks for taking the time.
Can't believe you would do a camera review comparing a body with stabilization and one without, and then admit you didn't even try the stabilized camera, and then say it was simply too heavy. Why not just save us the time in the first place and say you hate this camera because it's too heavy. I'm old school. I like heavy stuff.
Am I the only one that believes that Markus is one of the most genuine people on this platform? He just gives off a vibe of just a genuine person, i hope you are doing well Markus. Stay safe :)
I really appreciate the down-to-earth reviews and tips of all the equipment that you've shown us. Thank you so much for being authentic. It makes a huge difference.
I have a GX85 and your spot on, it's great for video and never overheats, But I would call it solid, not heavy. Love how you put a Sigma 1.4 on both cameras , nice touch. The lighting and set design are pro grade. Great work, love your videos!
I bought the GX85 a year and a half ago when I took up photography. I chose it because of the image stabilization and its performance reviews. I like that it has a bit of weight to it. Makes it seem substantial and feels good and n my grip. He should have used it before making a discussion. Sometimes the thing you like least becomes the thing you like best when you spend time with something.
I personally also find tremendous value in the GX85 versus the Sony for stills photography. Lens availability for APS-C on Sony is not nearly as vast as for M43, especially if you don't count the full frame lenses that would make the Sony's heft significantly more than the GX85. I'm a FF shooter (Nikon) who just bought the GX85 after this struggle between Sony and the Lumix. I have an a6000 but lens choices are there, but not in some of the small form factors available in M43. For example, I wanted the smallest package to have with me all the time. The kit lens is about the same size as the Sony kit, but the 14 and 20mm M43 pancakes are just tiny and have apertures of 1.7. I know there are Sigmas with apertures as large as 1.4, but the 16mm lens is quite hefty compared to a 14mm or 20mm 1.7 Panasonic lens. If lens size didn't matter, I too would probably choose Sony, but not without image stabilization built in, which also drives price upward significantly. For me, the GX85 was best value, best feature and best size combined in one options. I will buy larger lenses, but when size is the ultimate goal, nothing really beats it with 14mm 1.7, 20mm 1.7, 25mm 1.7, 42.5mm 1.7 or 45mm 1.8 Olympus. Those lenses are just so tiny that carrying it is a pleasure and tucking it away and not being "that photographer over there" is awesome. I don't need the world to see me out and about looking like a pro carrying my heaviest Nikon gear. I just need to get the shots, come home and then enjoy without being a distraction, and the GX85 does that for me.
Hey Markus, we love your opinions - you don't need to give so much stuff away! I know it jives with your life motto of giving 10% but us true fans are here for the content.
Markus. I love the reviews but you have a lot of talent. I would really like more how to's and tutorials from you! I think you have a wealth of knowledge to share with us newbs. 😁. Keep up the good work.
You can shot anamorphic with 4K photo mode on the GX85. Stabilizer work very good with any manual lenses. For film student class is an incredible camera.
Markus, thank you for your great videos--keep up the great work! I don't think enough people just take a moment to say "thank you" to you. You have this contagious energy when you talk about the things that you love. It's one of the many reasons I subscribed a while back to this channel. Another great thing about those little GX85 cameras is that the slightly heavier weight might actually help you keep it steadier when shooting video.
Came across your videos while trying to figure out what i should get to start a video channel . I thought i needed/wanted a camera. I guess i should get a video camera. You have an awesome channel. Now im going to watch up to a yr back to see what's best under 2,000 in 2020. Thank you!
I have been looking at a lot of reviews for the past month over which camera to buy for a small church project and it came down to Panasonic g85 vs Sony 6300 they got the g85. I am relieved to see you reviewing the gx85 vs the Sony. Puts my mind at ease. They needed video and didn't want to go for camcorder plus the g85 had sound built in.
I would love to see more technical tutorials like camera tricks and tips to fully master the a6300 but in your own unique 'Markus Pix' way as usual! These giveaways are getting out of control. The amount of outgoing merchandise coming through your channel is insane. Kudos on being a breath of fresh air in this crammed photography/videography RUclips space and keep inspiring as always!
We've had the GX80 for years now and it's a great little camera to shoot with. Added a little grip and now it pairs perfectly with the Lumix 25mm f1.7. And if you get mugged, it's heavy enough to bash someones skull and strong enough that you can still finish your photoshoot. The only thing we miss is a mic-in because Pascal keeps forgetting to hit the record button on the audio recorder. Ah well...
Loved the review Markus. I’ve been a gx85 owner for a few years and I absolutely love it! Doesn’t seem very heavy at all to me compared to my old canon dslr and stabilization is great.
Panasonic and Olympus lenses are smaller, lighter than and usually less expensive. Didn't care for the Sony for that reason as well as the more complex menu system.
Dang. I have a gx85 and literally was on the verge of "upgrading" to the a6400. This video has made me think it's not that big of a change like I was hoping. The no ibis kinda scares me too, maybe I'm not as good at shooting handheld as I thought lol
I upgraded to the GX9 and am fairly happy. I prefer the jpegs -- resolution of course, but colour too; exposure compensation button (very stiff unfortunately); titling EVF (do wish it was bigger though). Biggest con is 100g heavier
Hi Markus looks like a fine camera. I hope the person that wins it really wants this camera. So people if you have a camera and don't need this one let's someone else win it.
I bought my GX85 over a year ago used for $280 and he threw in a 25mm prime and lens bags and extra batteries and a scorpion jr which ive never used lol. glad to see I got one when the time was right. I shoot music videos on it and nearly all my clients remark on how great the picture is from such a small camera. admittedly it is a brick, but brick beats plastic any day. I'm about to upgrade to a BMPCC, ironically, but you bet the GX85 is going to still be in my edc bag. MFT is win.
I love my gx85. It is pretty heavy for the size but, in my experience, it's still lighter with a pro zoom than an ASP-C. Plus, that dual IS means I can shoot handheld without rigging. That makes the camera super light by comparison. But, as you said, it's better for video shooters and that's where my perspective comes from.
You are so kind to give such precious gifts to others. One day, I'll send you my "photography" story. It's relatively short, but impactful in many ways.
In the future can you make a video on how you record your audio. I been really curious about that and I'm sure everyone who watches your channel could benefit from it.
Everytime I see your notifications I immediately click the video 🙂 Didn't cross my mind about the overheating for extended video use. Nice breakdown on the two cameras.
Great video, I honestly think the GX85 is the best cameras available for people on a budget. When you compare to others it has all the major features you need except a mic input, so it competes even with some pricier cameras. on a side note you should look into the camera more often. We want eye contact
wow i had no idea they were that close in size. i was considering one just for 4K video, i have a a6000, but i don't vlog or take a lot of video i couldn't justify buying another camera. i have noticed you have been changing the style of the videos a bit, i like the direction you are going, keep up the great work!
I own two GX80. I paid 250 euros for my first one on eBay, with that 12-32 lens, and 380 euros for the second one with a 14-140 lens (That I sold for 280 since I already had one). Both camera are in brand new condition. I love them. I do mostly video with them as for still image my main camera is a Nikon D4 ( And that IS a big and easy camera) . I really love the GX80 and would advise everyone to get one.
Markus I always enjoy your informative videos. I actually have 2 GX85s, 2 A6000, 2 A5100 and a couple of EM10mii units. I really like having IBIS but sometimes I like the higher resolution of the sonys.
@user-zr9ne2cd2t it depends on situation, my next trip to europe will take gx85 because of smaller lenses and can fit 2 bodies with lenses in small bag. I know A6000 is actually smaller and lighter but the lenses are a bit heavier.
Great review and very entertaining, as usual! I just found a GM5 and won’t go back to big, brick-like cameras, haha. I love being able to carry it all day without getting tired. This is thanks to your RUclips reviews!
Love the channel, love the content. I love that you actually know and understand the benefits of MFT rather than acting like it has no place. 👍 I am enjoying my G7 which I bought mainly for video purposes.
I enjoy your channel about M4/3 because I had Lumix GF2 G7 and another small point of shoot Lumix I lost long time ago. I am thinking to migrate to Sony full frame but you convinced me to stay with M4/3. Your post always perfect everything excellent the way you talk and the subject always interesting.
For me it's about the usability factor. The Panasonic just always works for me. For the weight, It makes it feel sooo solid and more premium than it is.
GX85 was my first 4/3 camera . Came with two zooms for $497. Made the mistake of buying an Olympus EPL-7 which is handier as a grab and go. Couldn't stop with just one. Added a like new EM-1 with battery grip last week for $299 delivered. Simply better bang for the buck. Thanks for another informative video.
I have been waiting for the winner to be announced. Been Praying for a camera like this one. I miss the only thing that brings me happiness and that's my Photography. Need a camera but every single penny of mine goes to my Bill's, nothing is left to save up for a camera. Someone is going to be luckiest person. They probably won't realize how lucky. But maybe they will. God Bless all of you who are reading this. And Markus for giving to those less fortunate. I don't know anyone else who thinks about people that can't afford, disabled, etc. Who would never get a chance to get into Photography any other way. Amazing, Beautiful person. God Bless everyone.
The GX85 is an awesome (big) pocket camera with the 20mm f1.7. Small enough to fit comfortably in a pair of khakis. You can take stabilized pictures in low light with pretty good shallow depth of field. It weighs less than a pound. So it's not that heavy for a stabilized camera with a decent sensor size.
GX80 is more versatile for small compact. I own my for almost 4 years and was looking for change but nothing impress me enough to make a switch. I use mine with two primes Leica 15mm (street photography and all round carry) and Panasonic 42mm for portraits. Also, I've one 35-100 telephoto from Panasonic.
@@Invintius Yes, 1.5 year ago I bought DC-G9EG-K and very happy with it. It has almost full frame size but lenses are smaller than full frame equivalent and it makes the setup very good balanced in hands. I also sold all prime lenses and now use two Panasonic Lumix G Vario ASPH POIS 12-35 and 35-100 f/2.8. Most of the time I use a smaller lens - shooting in 24mm 35mm 50mm 70mm. The other one is used for portraits with larger bokeh to match full frame portraits bokeh at ff 50mm (taken at 100mm), and for horse jumping competition shoot at 70mm 85mm 120mm 150mm 200mm. I try to keep the focal length consistent and stick to those.
I don't have the GX85, I do have the GX9 which is similar. Recently I loaned a A6000 from a friend to compare it with my GX9. I was missing the touch screen on the Sony. The great plus of Lumix cameras is their Touch screen which you can operate for evrything including focus, :menus, functions. These are solid, well thought, easy to use camera. My friend still has the GX9, I am really missing it.
Just got my GX85 for Father's Day. I love it. It's a nice complement to the G85 (already have a bunch of lenses) and I got it and two lenses for $500! I'm not going to try to "win" this one, because I have one. Whoever wins it will get a really nice camera. It takes really nice pictures!
The G100 is smaller, lighter, bigger sensor, better color science and improved focus and tracking, plus flip out screen ruclips.net/video/35KV31_CT5I/видео.html G100 20scenarios ruclips.net/video/oBp5dMnAJ9M/видео.html
@@MarkusPix thanks for that... strange I just checked out a comparison and the g100 seems heavier and larger than the gx850: cameradecision.com/compare/Panasonic-Lumix-DC-G100-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-GX850#:~:text=Both%20cameras%20have%20Four%20Thirds,3%20years%20older%20than%20G100.
Oh sorry, you said Gx850, I thought you said GX85, sorry. Yes the GX850 is much lighter and smaller, but the G100 has a viewfinder, better color, improved focus and tracking and is an all around better camera. But the GX850 is a great lightweight travel camera to have fun with. I love both of them for different reasons.
I'm a surfer and RUclipsr and this camera is great and the lenses and accessories are cheaper but great quality. Best camera I've ever had and my surf photos and video are great.
I don't care much about the overheating, as I usually shoot short clips. The IBIS in the GX85 is just amazing, and totally unexpected in a camera of this price range. As you said, you need to spend more than double to get something on a different brand that's not even close to this stabilization. On the other hand, the autofocus on the GX85 is useless for video. But the assisted Manual focus with peaking is excellent.
For anyone watching... 1:35 Not to rant... but just want to clarify for anyone wondering. MegaBYTE and MegaBIT are NOT the same thing... please do not be confused. This video (MarkusPix) gets it wrong. Just for reference. If it did shot at 100 MB per second, the filesizes woud be about 1 GB for a 10 second video. 6 GB per minute. Thats not really how it works. Its Mbit (Megabit) he is talking about. Megabyte is a filesize. Megabit is a bitrate.
Good review :) The lack of external mic input is a bit of a bummer, but that's just nit picking. It would definitely be an indie filmmaker's dream, especially those of us who are one-man-bands.
The IBIS on the GX85 is *real.* That's important; the Sony a6500 IBIS is only good for still photography, (takes care of micro-shakes), but does absolutely *nothing* for video. I burned myself getting an a6500 thinking it would be good for vlogging. Without a gimbal, it's pretty hopeless for walk & talk, and gimbals are awkward; the opposite of compact and easy!
I was deciding between the Lumix GX85 and the Sony A6500 or A6100 for my first digital camera and chose the GX85. Got it brand new from Amazon bundled with the 12-32mm and 45-150mm kit lenses because it had a better price to value ratio than the Sony cameras. The 12-32mm is such a gem of a lens and now I just need an inexpensive standard prime lens to complete my kit, such as the Olympus M.Zuiko 25mm f1.8 or the plastic fantastic Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f1.7, but I'm leaning towards the Olympus. I am thinking of potentially getting an A6500, A6100 or A6400 as a secondary camera system in the future for that sweet autofocus system and PDAF if Panasonic won't bring out a compact MFT camera with those features. Your contagious passion for photography played a part in inspiring me to get a camera and it feels like such a rewarding experience compared to using a smartphone.
Hi! I’m peeled between the lumix gx85 and sony a6100 as well for my first digital camera too, would you say that the lumix gx85 produce great quality photos in natural and low light and flash on, as well as with the zoom turned on? :)
Crap I've been a little bit of a compact camera gearhead for 10y and your videos are teaching me stuff I never knew keep up the great work! I really never thought that much about bokeh or overheating till your video series ... Lumix is really a video cam dominant camera (better than canon Olympus nerfed by design)...
One thing that you forgot to mention is the lens weight and sizes for micro 4/3 are much lower than APSC and there’s a complete eco system dedicated to them. APSC is like a neglected lens category that first party manufacturers don’t fully service, because they want you to buy the full frame system. So, for travel and everything else, micro 4/3 can serve you at lower weight class. The shortcomings being high ISO noise and difficulty getting shallow depth of field.
No I didn't forget to mention that- I've been saying that for years on this channel. I have over thirty M43 cameras and over 60 M43 lenses ruclips.net/video/0eDOCAokkko/видео.html The reason I use M43 is small and lightweight when traveling ruclips.net/video/vj2eji4ms5A/видео.html . BUT the reason this video was made is the GX85 is NOT small and lightweight, it is a heavy brick. I don't care about IBIS, I want tiny ultralight cameras. If I'm going to have something as big and heavy as the GX85, then I might as well use the 6300 which has higher image quality and bokeh. My two fav lenses are not that much bigger or heavier than the good M43 lenses. That was the reason for this video.
Coming from a Sony user I skipped the 6000 series cameras and went straight into the A7's but if I were in a position to chose between these 2 I would recommend the Lumix for sure
You are sooo right Markus! I am on the same page, technology is so good nowadays, that we could be shooting a feature on small cameras and get better quality than the first Star Wars shot on digital! Small and light cameras are easier to rig too. My hidden gem is EPL-9! Lighter, smaller, 4K/24 and does even 120fps, although in 720p only, but hey! Thanks for the great review!
When the sensor isn't as small a cell phone or a cheap camcorder, I can't help but like the camera. Then again, I almost never record anything outdoors in super bright light so I'm biased toward having a 4/3 sensor or larger.
Am i crazy? For me, the little sensor Is better. No overheat, tiny lenses, smaller cameras, etc. Yo can get blurry background too. Well, a MFT or 1" is ok for me, for video cameras and photography cameras.
The a6000 and 6500 did overheat a lot but a6400 doesn't overheat at all unless you're shooting out in the summer sun for hours. It can go HOURS recording video if you have enough battery and not overheat indoors. I don't know about the 6600 but I suppose it will have similar results. Still I love the gx85 more! If you're looking to buy the 6000 or 6500 then do consider gx85 as well. Unless you specifically want an aps-c sensor gx85 is better than those. But if you have the cash then go for the 6400, it's an overall better camera.
As a Sony convert, I was interested to see your perspective on the GX85. Was looking at the a6500, but the price and features of the GX85 are enticing.
I love this channel. The whole world is talking about the Canon R5 and a7S III and Markus Pix is reviewing the GX’s and the a6000 series. Love it!!!!

Great review and very entertaining, as usual! I just found a GM5 and won’t go back to big, brick-like cameras, haha. I love being able to carry it all day without getting tired. This is thanks to your RUclips reviews!
I LOVE my GM5!
Love the channel, love the content. I love that you actually know and understand the benefits of MFT rather than acting like it has no place. 👍 I am enjoying my G7 which I bought mainly for video purposes.
I love my G7! Funny I bought it because it looks so cool. I liked it more than my GH5S so I gave away my GH5!
For the weight, It makes it feel sooo solid and more premium than it is.
lesnes are way cheaper as well
@@AmbientWanderer And lighter wright than the Sony lenses to which makes up for the weight of the camera. Mmmmm.
GX85 with the Leica 12-60mm is a great combo.
You prefer the Oly cameras? If so, I'm curious which features are better?
@@sdrtcacgnrjrc autofocus, build quality feels sturdier and extends to how m.zuiko lenses feel. Panasonic is better at video.
@@daleclark3138 thanks
Nice Video Mark. Love it. I also love Oly.
I've got a custom 3D printed grip for my GX85 that makes it so much more comfortable when I've got big lenses on there
Have you or can you share the 3d-files for it? Would wanna try one too!
Get them marketplace 👌

I didn't realize that stabilization added so much weight. Thanks.
Love your positive vibes. THANK YOU SIR!
GX80 is more versatile for small compact. I own my for almost 4 years and was looking for change but nothing impress me enough to make a switch.
I use mine with two primes Leica 15mm (street photography and all round carry) and Panasonic 42mm for portraits. Also, I've one 35-100 telephoto from Panasonic.
have you changed yet?
Loved how you kept it real! Fun review.
The image stabilization helps you get better photos too.
Great video mate! I enjoy watching all your videos. I also like small cameras with decent ( micro four thirds ) sensors and sharp pictures with bokeh!
Just got my GX85 for Father's Day. I love it. It's a nice complement to the G85 (already have a bunch of lenses) and I got it and two lenses for $500! I'm not going to try to "win" this one, because I have one. Whoever wins it will get a really nice camera. It takes really nice pictures!
ok so whats the best smallest quality camera you recommend at least micro four thirds... the Lumix 850 and Olympus 45mm f1.8 lens?
Thank you markus... such a nice review as always 😇😇
thank you!
Thank You! God Speed to you and Cara!
Love the thoughtful comparison!
Of course, you don't know how good is the stabilization if you didn't even use it one single time...
For anyone watching... 1:35
Not to rant... but just want to clarify for anyone wondering.
Good review :)
The lack of external mic input is a bit of a bummer, but that's just nit picking.
Bro love your ENTHUSIASM!! and you're funny as well!
That animation at 6:00 is so cute!
The gx85 is fantastic! Wonderful image quality.
Great explanation Markus, thanks.
I've heard good things about the Gx85 before, good to see you saying the same.
love your videos Markus thanksssss
Very helpful Markus. Thank you sir!
very interesting video. very good comparison .Thank You
Coming from a Sony user I skipped the 6000 series cameras and went straight into the A7's but if I were in a position to chose between these 2 I would recommend the Lumix for sure
Hey what kind of mic were you using in this video. It sounds so crystal clear
Audio series coming soon. It's not simply about what mic someone uses
The original Jurassic Park in all its revolutionary glory was shot in just 1K !
@@MarkusPix That is amazing, I did not know that! Proves even more that a great movie depends on content much more than on the tools!
Had to come over once I got the notification!
Great video. Yes it funny how close they are. Who ever wins is got to be luckiest person alive. God Bless my Friend.
Good comparasion 👏👏
I like how Marcus is getting even more quarkier with each passing video.
I like how you teach bc know it's from actual experience, not just specs and rumors. Won't be entering the contest, but good luck to all participants!
When the sensor isn't as small a cell phone or a cheap camcorder, I can't help but like the camera. Then again, I almost never record anything outdoors in super bright light so I'm biased toward having a 4/3 sensor or larger.
You do such a good job, and may I say, brother, I like your style.
Am i crazy? For me, the little sensor Is better. No overheat, tiny lenses, smaller cameras, etc. Yo can get blurry background too. Well, a MFT or 1" is ok for me, for video cameras and photography cameras.
Not everything is about the bokeh. I switched from gx80 because of the field of view it's just too cropped.
But if you have the cash then go for the 6400, it's an overall better camera.
what about in 2023?
As a Sony convert, I was interested to see your perspective on the GX85. Was looking at the a6500, but the price and features of the GX85 are enticing.
