It took me 18 months, from when I first dove head first into Dolby Vision, to finally be able to enjoy both Dolby Vision and Atmos at the same time, with all AV components (UHD player, AVR, TV) up-to-date with proper firmware support finally delivered and working together. I support competition, by principle, and it sounds like Imax want to take a bite at Dolby, that's perfectly fine by me. I just hope for Imax' sake, its new format is properly communicated and supported by AV manufacturers out of the gate, or that it proves to be of substantial improvement over Dolby Vision/Atmos. Since after Dolby I really have zero patience/goodwill left to play another series of endlessly-waiting-for-firmware-support game for another AV standard.
If your sound system supports DTS and you have a UHD Blu-Ray then you don't need to buy any other equipment. Just buy IMAX movies when they become available. IMAX certified equipment provides the best experience, but it's not required.
Hello, I'm buying Denon X-6500 which is IMAX Enhanced? Do I need to buy IMAX Enhanced tv like Sony OLED A9G as well to play IMAX Enhanced content or can the IMAX Enhanced AV receiver play IMAX Enhanced content on my 4K LG OLED659C?
Hey Techno Dad Did the IMAX update on my Denon AVR-X8500H. How do I tell it works? Do I needs new IMAX Blu-ray? Also eARC curious how it will work . Can’t check info on screen on on Front Panel or Denon App
I'm not convinced this is anything more than branding and certification. At the minimum, I would expect a full screen 16x9 presentation at the highest bitrate possible. Something every UHD should already provide yet studios still chop off the tops and bottoms to simulate the theatrical experience even after using IMAX cameras to begin with... but in reality, they chop the half the image off off to cut back on bitrate so they squeeze in more audio tracks. Any top notch system should look and sound the same.
Wookie Groomer so it has nothing to do with directors intent? Now if you’re referring to Disney and their horrible practices, such as not even bothering to reframe Infinity War for the home release (heads weren’t chopped off in the theater I saw it at, which was presented in 2.35:1), then I’m with you. They could have provided both versions to please everyone.
The IMAX image enhancements happen before authoring the disc. The only technology embedded in the electronics is the IMAX specific DTS:X audio processing and it will be triggered automatically on IMAX certified sound systems. For displays, the IMAX logo indicates that it meets IMAX specifications and quality but unlike Dolby Vision, there's no image processing specific to IMAX. It's 4K HDR-10.
If you are looking at the recording of the demo, the aspect ratio is actually taller than 16x9. Most TVs can’t do 1.90:1, home media imax scenes tap out at 1.78:1, which is 16x9. Looks like Enhanced will include that extra bit for projectors like the Sony ones that can actually do that full 1.90:1
Can’t wait all cool stuff I’ll definitely do the update on my 8012 next year. I’m hoping to buy a new tv for the holidays I’ll keep watching reviews till then great video.
There is nothing in IMAX Enhanced that requires a new player. It uses HDR10 with a tone map curve in an IMAX Enhanced 4k display. DTS: X bitstreaming remains the same as well. The problem with the content is that they add their DMR process to 4k studio masters that adds noise reduction and edge enhancement that could look terrible in home 4k video. The other issue is altering scope framed films to 1.78:1.
Nice! You’re all set, just need more content. Did you get the documentaries? It sucked that the only demo they had was the shuttle take off. Oh well! Sony just sent me the A8F which supports it. Just need Denon to send me something new and I’ll be good to go!! Lol!
@@TechnoDad No I didn't pick up the 45min nature ones 😆. My Marantz doesn't have the IMAX update. Enjoy the a8f! I hope my Denon 4400H gets the update... 😉
I LOVE your Channel! I'm new to the whole home theater world but I was wondering if you know or if there's a way to find out which receivers will support IMAX enhanced? Thank you!!
Hmmmm so will the older Denon 4400 and 6400 get this update? If not would this format be a reason for you to upgrade your receiver? Just asking because I JUST got my 4400 and now I’m like did I make a mistake. Thanks.
Hi Henry!! I would not swap a 4400 for the 4500. You have no clue what content will be available. It's better to wait it out for a year or two to see if it even survives.
Techno Dad thanks for the reply. I got worried a little. The receiver sounds GREAT I can’t see how it can sound even better. Unless I get an amplifier.
I'm sure this news has something to do with the 4400 going on sale. I didn't hesitate to buy one. I don't want to wait around for a new format to iron put the kinks and end up with very little content. I'm not looking to spend that kind of money and I'm very excited about the 4400 supporting basically every format besides this new one. I'll rock what I've got for 10 years hopefully.
My question is, if I'm only currently interested in the aspect ratio portion of it (budgetary reasons), my standard 4K bluray player and 4K HDR tv should be fine right? Infinity War isn't in the line up yet but I'd be surprised if it wasn't on its way at some point, and I don't know if I should hold out for that or just get the 4K version that already exists
Nope u r screwed like me as on now. This is from their web site. Marantz is one of the first manufacturers to support this new technology via firmware update. The feature will be supported on our latest AVRs with more than 9 channel amplification. It will be available for SR6013 - in January 2019 SR7013 - in January 2019 AV7705 - in January 2019 AV8805 - in October 2018. There will be no firmware update to support IMAX Enhanced on older Marantz AVRs.

I forgot you had the 4400. I just thought since you did this video you may be better informed than I regarding the THX Enhancement. That said, for those of you that have Denon or Marantz AVR’s that do have the ability to download this firmware, last night I looked again in the menu of my Denon AVR and the THX Enhanced audio firmware is still not available. It was my understanding that the Denon AVR X8500H and Marantz 8805 pre amp would have the firmware available to download in the first part of January of 19’, and those that have the X4500 & X6500 the firmware update would be available in February 19’. I will contact Denon customer service next week to see if I can find out more.
Mike, I just saw a post on Denon's IG saying they are going to address the IMAX Enhanced update in a couple of days on the Denon 500 series AVRs. Stay tuned!
Techno Dad , yes, I now have it on my Denon AVR X8500H, I just couldn’t find it anywhere in Denon’s menu. That said, I ordered the only two IMAX Enhanced movies (documentaries really) currently available. A beautiful planet & Journey to the South Pacific. Once I inserted them into my player, my AVR showed IMAX-DTS:X on the display. I must say, it was very impressive with both video & audio! My whole soundstage became a wall of sound with unbelievable voicing coming from my center channel. Probably the best I’ve ever heard my center channel play! Thank you so much for getting back to me though, as I really enjoy your videos!

I think you underplayed the importance of the speakers and their power requirements if you want to mimic the Imax experience at home. To literally feel in the audio requires some serious db which in turn means you need a lot of power, particularly if you don't have very efficient speakers. I'm ambivalent about this whole marketing drive. I would want to know specifics of the image and audio improvements before I invest in further upgrades. It isn't a resolution enhancement and HDR (in whatever implementation) has done a lot to improve image quality in both HD and 4K. And from the sound perspective, Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are such a quantum leap over 7.1 audio, it's difficult to see where the improvement will be that discernible over a good 4K release without significant upgrade in your system to get the entire experience. I'll watch with interest from the sidelines but I don't feel this 'format' is going to have any significant impact on the average home theatre experience in the near future. Content of course will be key to any success this venture is likely to have.
Completely agree. Tho only upgrades worthwhile in recent years: lossy to lossless audio, atmos/dtsx, sd to full 1080p, SDR to HDR If you have those things, I don’t see anything worth While to upgrade
