Home Theater Audio - What is ARC, HDCP, Toslink, SPDIF, Dolby Atmos?

  • This is a general overview of Home Theater Audio including surround formats such as Dolby Atmos and DTS-X as well as audio cable types and surround sound configurations.
    With TVs being so thin, they don't usually provide the best sound quality, which has caused most people to purchase a sound bar or home theater system. This video explains the best way to connect these devices for the best possible audio/video quality. HDMI provides the best connection for surround formats but it has caused issues when attempting to play HDCP protected 4K video.

    He speaks so well. That was a joke, the truth is, this guy just broke down the audio hookup problems better than anyone I have heard and I've heard a bunch of them on RUclips and at the stores, no one seems to understand it all the way this dude here does. Thank you very much, please keep making videos for us.

    Chris, I found your channel after searching for educated projector reviews and finding mostly cell-phone produced content that was peppered with "ums" and bad audio and video. Thanks for explaining the tech the way you do. No grandstanding, no diatribe, no 20-minute dissertation about what you're going to say--you are clear and to the point which I appreciate VERY much! You present all of the information concisely, even when you say "this was longer than I intended," but I could easily hear more information from you. I've recommended several of your videos and will continue to seek out your content first when needing a fact-based comparison on products. Thank you for your work!

    I feel like so many reviewers glaze over the basics, assuming that everyone already knows. It's so this way when trying to look on audiophile sites to find the best speakers, headphones, or Soundbars. My head just start spinning. Thank you for starting with the basics and keeping it easy to understand. Really interested in Yamaha's MusicCast 400.

    I don't care how long your videos are they are all worth the time. As long as they don't go over 12 hours I'm good. I'd say I'm pretty on top of new electronic settings etc. The reason I mentioned this is a few months ago I was in a Best Buy store and there was an elderly couple looking for a tv and the more the BB guy talked to them their eyes were as big as a dinner plate. I felt sorry for them so waited till the BB guy left and after, I spoke to them and was able to help them. But, technology is moving so fast that every time a buy something new I'm aware that in a year or two some new tech. will pop up. So thanks for the videos.

    Audio tip for you and your next video ... decouple your audio monitors from your table and get them to the edge. the table is reflective and you will be getting much improved audio by moving the speakers to the edge of the table and putting them on islolation pucks like a set of iso acoustics pucks. another recommendation get your monitors on stands not on a tv. Love the video keep it up.

    Thank you for the update. I got into 5.1 way back in the mid 90s when I bought one of the first affordable Pioneer AC-3 (Dolby Digital) receivers and a laserdisc player. Loved the sound. I was young and single so I went all out, bought 4 full range floor standing Cerwin Vega speakers and a big center channel speaker. I never got a subwoofer because I always wanted to get a 15" Velodyne, but never did. Had to give it all up in the recession when I moved out of the country to find work. I need to come back and get reestablished. I want that Atmos/ DTS-X sound!

    So thanks for RUclips for bubbling up this video. I follow your channel and really enjoy your reviews. I have had a Samsung sound bar that supports ATMOS for 5 years and have always thought i wasted my money for the sound I was getting. After watching this video I found out I may have it configured incorrectly, yes I know RTFM but I never did. Originally I had my ATV and PS hooked up to my OLEDs HDMIs and just fed the sound back down to the sound bar via the arc connection. After watching this video I set off to see if I could get more out of my sound bar and I am happy I did. 1. I still have the TV and Sound bar connected via the ARC so my over the air antenna be heard using the sound bar and so the sound bar can send video up. 2. my ATV is connected to one of the HDMI ports on the sound bar. However this still didn't allow me to get ATMOS sound. 3. I updated my sound bars firmware but still no ATMOS. 4. Scoured the web in frustration.... no joy. 5. Remembered your comments about HDMI cable versions. 6. Ordered an HDMI 2.1 cable to use for ATV and sound bar connection....... BOOM ATMOS. Thanks

    Sir Majestic, please save my sanity! I knew as soon as this video started that you knew what you were talking about! I’d love any help, but understand you don’t have time.
    I have:
    1. TV- Vizio M657-G0 4k UHD/ HDR 10+ (QLED, beautiful!) with 4 HDMI Inputs. Input #1 is labeled “ARC”. Next to it is a Toslink (Audio out) and RCA Stereo Outs.
    2. A/V Receiver- Pioneer VSX-521 with 4 HDMI inputs, 1 HDMI output (labeled “Out” (TV). 2 “assignable” toslink Inputs next to it.
    3. 4k UHD/HDR Sony UBP-X-700 (just a couple months old; the one from 2 years ago had glitches that are fixed on mine).
    It has 2 HDMI Outputs: 1 labeled “audio/video”, the other labeled “Audio Only”.
    I wanted to ask a pro before things (besides me 🚬💭) started smoking.
    Mr. Majestic, do the 2 HDMI outputs (1 audio & video, the other audio only), mean I can simply connect the “Audio & Video” output to my TV with a hi-speed HDMI cable, and use a 2nd hi-Speed HDMI cable to connect from the “Audio Only” to a free HDMI input on the back of my receiver, then select the right Input on my TV for 4k picture and select the proper HDMI input on my receiver, and be *golden*, with 4k/HDR picture and surround-sound audio working together (in synch)?
    I really hope so! Then I can skip ARC entirely!
    My disc-player works great when I connect the “Audio & Video” HDMI directly into my TV, but then I can’t use my surround-sound and stuck with crap TV speakers.
    I have all 3 “John Wick” movies (probably not for kids; these are the best, most relentlessly violent and well made movies ever! He fires about 267 HEADSHOTS PER MINUTE! I really want to enjoy them with tight 4k Ultra/HDR and LOUD gunfire and explosions happening all around me!
    If you could please help me out, you’re welcome to drop by anytime and watch them with me (and the 1989 Batman, the Crow or whatever you like!
    Thank you, sir!

    Can’t believe these companies didn’t just use the optical audio cable to handle “ARC” especially with controlling the volume of a soundbar

    There will be 7.1.2.2 surround sound speakers for home In the future.

      How much will they cost do u know

    • @honey4xi
      @honey4xi 6 лет назад +3

      Let me explain 7.1.2.2 surround sound speakers: 7.1 speakers you know, .2 is two speakers over head, and the last *.2* is the two speakers (very thin) lying flat on the floor for sounds from below such as earthquake, water fish, land animals, so on. Sounds come from the front and back, right and left, above and *below* you. It will be the complete 3D surround sound.

    • @honey4xi
      @honey4xi 6 лет назад

      I don't make the price. You will wait for speaker companies to announce the products with prices.

      @@lexhtfdct7230 | Probably Samsung will come up 7.1.2.2 surround sound player & speakers for 8K TVs. 2 speakers on the ceiling and 2 speakers on the middle of floor are wireless & rechargeable batteries. Now I still have Samsung 1080p 3DLED TV (I bought it in 2010) & 7.1 surround sound blu-ray player & speakers which its 2 rear speakers are wireless.

    Sir ,
    I have sony dav tz 215 home theatre system.
    Can i attach it's speakers with any projector to get good audio quality.?

    • @bassinbillRC5300
      @bassinbillRC5300 3 года назад

      Unfortunately you cannot because your system has a HDMI out and no inputs that would support inputting any audio from any projector whatsoever. HDMI output for DVD upgrades
      600 watts power output
      BRAVIA Sync
      Digital amplifier
      S-Master
      I copied and pasted this information from Sony's website.

    • @bassinbillRC5300
      @bassinbillRC5300 3 года назад

      You actually don't get the audio from a projector unless the projector has its own built-in TV over the air TV tuner or Android TV app.

    Hope someone can help with the following:
    I have a LG B7 Oled and considering buying the SJ9 soundbar (don't hate!).
    As I see both support HDCP 2.2. The TV decodes DTS-HD and Atmos (and they are backwards compatible I guess). The soundbar supports all the common formats.
    I want to know which problems with sound input/output I might have with the following setup:
    PS4 (which will connect to soundbar HDMI in)
    Set top box (connect to TV HDMI)
    Soundbar HDMI Arc out to TV HDMI Arc
    HDD via USB 3.0 to the TV
    Now, most movies I have on the HDD (but also can be played physically on PS4) and it is primarily from there that I watch - so my question is whether or not I have the optimal setup in this situation? Will DTS-HD be output through the soundbar if it encoded on the HDD in one of the supported formats? Or will I have to use physical copies of the movies?

    Could you do buying guide videos with specific models included? Is it worth it to get something like an Onkyo HT-S9800THX? I like the 1k price point but I would like to hear about if its worth it to just downgrade the budget. I also loved your old projector videos and would love to see which models you recommend in different price tiers similar to projectorreviews site. Thanks for the valauble info!

      Kurspro yes, each link in the device chain from the 4K Blu-ray player to your TV should support HDCP 2.2(not backwards compatible) or else you risk downgrading the resolution to 1080p.
