Thanks for the thorough video! I'm having VIOLENT N to D engagement and was looking for that ND accumulator....I've watched your videos for a while now and knew that you would be a good source of information. Thank you!!
Turns out I have an AXOD-E and the ND accumulator is in the side under the chain cover. Regardless, I'll change fluid and filter. Do you have any advice on in-vehicle checks to address harsh P/N to OD engagement? I still suspect the accumulator, but I am not very familiar with this tranny.@@GaryFerraro
What’s the difference between the ax4n and the ax4n metric? Also on the 2001 Ford Windstar LX van what would cause the trans to make a clicking noise almost like a cv or universal joints makes and leak fluid around the pan and torque converter? How expensive are they to rebuild and how long will it take to rebuild it at a common transmission shop?
@@GaryFerraro most of the time it quietens down when i added some fluid to but a few 100 feet later it came back usally rpms dont matter as far as this clicking it does it coasting or even if you lay the beans to it
I just tore down and rebuilt an ax4n on a ford Taurus. I kept a clean environment and was very careful to replace everything as I found it. I started the project, because it had trouble getting into first from stop. Read online that one of the molded piston could tear, causing the problem. Sure enough found a torn piston and a broken wavy plate. So I replaced all the pistons o rings and clutches put it back in the car and NOTHING. No gears at all. It sounds like it shifts, appears edge forward, but will not go. Tested line pressure, no problems there, but the epc pressures were all high. They are supposed to be 10-20, but they are 44 at idle. Any ideas?
Jere. Hart Question, do you have reverse? If you dont, then there is an issue with the foward clutch. The foward clutch is on in foward and reverse. If you have reverse, then i would look at the foward clutch control valve in the valvebody. Did you have the foward drum off where it splines onto the double drum? On the double drum there are 2 o rings that also seal the foward clutch and if you changed them you have to be very careful installing the drum they tear easy. Let me know how it goes. Gary
Gary Ferraro thanks for your response. I don't have reverse. I pulled out the forward clutch pack and inspected the orings and they were fine, however the 4 split rings don't seem to be sealing and thus the pistons are not engaging. We were testing with air and we are able to get a little bit of piston action, but about 70% air leakage around the shaft. The split rings are new and the transmission worked before I started so I don't think that it is the brass. What do you think?
Gary Ferraro sorry, you are correct 5 Teflon rings. The rubber seal is still fine as well. It seems like the Teflon rings just are not sealing. They are brand new from a transtec kit. I just read this morning that some people use metal rings instead because the Teflon rings can "submarine." Sounds like the issue I am having. I'm sure you have done a million of these, does this make sense?
When you say that there is air leaking around the shaft, do you mean around the inside of the drum. I never really had a problem with the rings that come in a transtec kit(they are orange?)and never used metal rings, do you have grease on the rings by chance not letting them spread? how do the other drums air check. Also the input sprag(what the clutchs spline into) it turns one way and locks the other way, is that installed correctly? Gary, Are yo by chance in new york?
Hey gary, Great straight forward videos I have a clean 96 taurus with the vulcan 3.0 @ 162k miles. Car shifts perfect at wot and for the most part around town...but when it comes to freeway merging or misc city driving, it slips and clunks only 2-3 and 3-2... For example, coming to a red light, I slow to about 25mph...light turns green, I get on the gas and its slips/cluncks. Down shifting into 2nd on the fwy is really bad. Any idea what it may be? I am thinking it is strictly a valve body issue.
@@GaryFerraro thanks for the reply Both but it gets worse when its hot. It got better when I changed the trans fluid/filter but went back after about 500 miles
Gary . . Just want to say that I respect your knowledge with honor. My stepdaughters 1998 Taurus slips from a dead stop, but then once moving it grabs like always. Your pro opinion? Clutch plates?
I have a 02 windstar that wont go into reverse,1st or drive but i can start it off in 2nd and then i can move gear selector into drive and it will upshift normally through gears into overdrive and all the way back down fine till about 10km is reached and then seems to go into a neatral condition until i repeat the process of putting the gear selector back into 2nd etc. What area should i be looking at with this. its my daily driver so your help would be awesome!

FYI...the intake clamp being loose seems to have been the root cause. No more harsh engagement.
Gracias exelente explicacion 👍

When do you hear the clicking? i would say they run about 1800 to 2000

If your speaking of the teflon rings on the tower, there are 5 of them not 4. Also on the foward piston there is a rubber inner lip seal.

Almost sounds like the Forward sprag is no good, that is located in the drum the overdrive band rides on
Thank you.
