    Here's one for you to ponder on when you have time...
    2004 Ford Freestar 4.2L w/183,000 miles on it (owned since new). I have run AMSOIL in the transmission since I did its first full fluid/filter change at 30,000 miles. For the past couple of years, when it's hot outside and the tranny temp is hot from driving, I occasionally get a delayed/harsh shift when going from D-R or R-D (never occurs with cold or warm operating temps). It's last full fluid/filter change was at 102,000 miles. Fluid still clean/red and normal odor.

  • @WizzRacing
    @WizzRacing 8 лет назад +5

    I had this happen before. I even checked the transmission fluid return line at the radiator and it still pumps fluid. So don't think just because its pumping fluid its not the problem. As the TQ holds 5 Qts. and it will move fluid till it's bone dry.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  8 лет назад +2

      Yup sometimes the pump shaft catches just enough to move some fluid around but not create pressure.

  • @TwisterChrisable

    Ugh, this just happened to me a couple of days ago. I had no warning and going down the highway I saw my rpm's sky rocket as I had the cruise on. Took the cruise off and never regained any form of movement out of the transmission. Plus when looking at the dip stick the fluid was high up the stick and I worried about blowing a seal, until I saw the other video then I had a ah ha moment. Glad to know it was a problem outside of my control for it only had near 50,000 miles on it and she handled excellent. No slippage, no hesitation. People said to trash it for there would be shavings in it but I read your comment below stating there was the filter and magnet to catch those so I feel confident when they start to work on it. Thanks for the video it helped me relax a tad

    On ours, the center hub on torque converter had cracked all the way around the center , causing no gear engagement . This was on Ford Recall .. Now the recall torque convertor that was put in ,is going out .... They used the same part number as the old converter ... Does nt take much too figure out, it will Fail also ......

    This video, as always, is very informative. I have a problem like this with our Freestar and i am wondering if you have any videos that show you actually doing this job (changing out the torque converter and the shaft)? That might give some of us shade tree mechanics a little more courage to tackle this issue.

    I'm wondering if that's what is the issue with my 2005 freestar.When I start off from a stop it shudders, how badly depends on how much throttle I give it.Seems to not do it much until it gets warmed up. I try to be really easy with the gas or else it will really shudder bad.

    Another issue with these (especially the AX4N) is that the sun gear strips out on the clutch pack. I was on the development team that automated the installation of the clutch pack into the transmission case. I left the company that was developing the robot to do this before final installation of the equipment, but I did implement the clutch hub installation robot in the trans plant (which is about an hour from my house).

    • @darylturcott
      @darylturcott 8 лет назад

      +wreckdriver99 I was a team leader on clutch team. we had an ABB robot set up to install the hub under the sun shell. I went to Windsor to watch it work prior to installation. was that one of your projects?
      I don't recall any other line side automation being added before the program ended.

    • @WreckDiver99
      @WreckDiver99 8 лет назад

      Windsor is where we ran off the equipment, but it wasn't an ABB...it was a FANUC...M-710iT. Had a 6DOF Force Sensor on it. Used a custom gripper to do the work. Again, I left the company right after we installed the Clutch Hub equipment...literally 2 weeks after my honeymoon...and winning the Henry Ford Tech Award. Maybe Sterling Transmission went another route after I left? Not sure.

      I'm there too (Ford)...Your name is very familiar and we probably worked on the AX4N Clutch Hub project with the Ford AMTD team. Unfortunately I got caught up in the 70% staff reductions at FANUC right after 9/11 happened, and never got to see the fruits of my labor.

    What about the metal shaving from old converter what should you do about getting the shavings out of the transmission is that something to worry about ir will it stay in the torque once it go's completely out.

    • @FordTechMakuloco
      @FordTechMakuloco  7 лет назад +1

      This happens over time so the very fine metal is caught mainly by the filter and magnet in the pan as it wears down over the years.

    Same thing happened to my ford tempo years ago. Stripped out in the torque converter, funny thing is that the pump shaft wasn't splined but was hexagonal shaped. It happened the same day that a spark plug wire went bad and caused a misfire. Don't know if the two issues were related at all or if that torque converter was just a ticking time bomb.

    I really need to have a talk with you about my ax4 and transmission because I haven't had no first gear or reverse in the last 10 years. I ran a toggle switch to one of the solenoids on and I used a switch to cut power off to that solenoid. When I do that it puts the transmission and limp mode and puts me in second gear. So I take off and second gear and when I get to 15 20 miles an hour I flipped the switch on and it goes through the rest of the gears. I bypass first gear and I just haven't been worrying about reverse. my transmission still runs I found a big chunk in the pan and it's still runs. I drive it everywhere I race with it and everything and it holds up

  • @stephenmckee6439

    How is it still working when I use the switch. Because my car don't have no first gear or reverse. I've bypassed that problem and made my car last a long time. I could have been changed the transmission but I just wanted to see how long it was going to last and it's still here. I could drive it to you right now

    I've been bypassing that for 10 years. My car hasn't had no first gear or reverse in the last 10 years. I use limp mode to my advantage and go into second gear so I can take off with a toggle switch. And when I get to 15-20 miles an hour I flip that switch on and it goes through the rest of the gears so I can drive on the highway. And it's got 728,000 original miles with the original timing chain and the original front and rear seal. Motor and transmission never been separated, I just replaced the original AC compressor. And it still has the original CV shafts. But I still need to fix my transmission I have a upgraded deco torque converter with the factory flaws fixed. I just need to get me another transmission. Hello. I have a 2002 Windstar. First the light was flashing on and off. Then, I drove it a block from the house and the van acted like it had no gears. Finally, after a while, the van got into gear, so I drove it back home and parked it. When I checked the fluid level, it was seriously up the dipstick. I think therefore, the pump crapped out. I have started the van and moved it around a few times but I will not take it any further. Does that sound like the shaft is bad? Its not the torque converter since it does move. Any help you can lend me would be so greatly appreciated. Roy

    P0471 TCC code, 05 Monterey, car drives fine, shifts fine, on long drives the transaxial light would go on, if i clear it, the car drives fine, do you think i should only change the solenoids and sensors, or do you think i should let the shop do a rebuild?

    Hi, I bought a used 2007 Ford Five Hundred SEL 2WD 3.0L. The transmission fluid is down to the cold mark when hot. The fluid in the vehicle is pink or red, as I read the manual it calls for XT-7-QCFT/WSS-MC9233-A and I read that it is blue. Should I mix it with the fluid that is in the tranny? Is there a red CVT type fluid that is compatible? Please advise.

    Greetings, I have a fors freestar and take the change but runs without any force, they told me that it could be the turbine in fact lower the transmission because the force driving it and threw all the liquid, I noticed that the rubber gasket removed the neck of the turbine and transmission but did not break it. Will it be the bad turbine ??? Sorry 4 my inglish.

    My sons car gave a code of P0741 converter clutch solenoid, and the trans fluid leaked out. Will a failed converter cause trans fluid to leak out? Also, can you list a company for the input shaft for the torque converter, Thank You

    I have a 2003 Taurus that slips briefly, then engages hard, but only when accelerating on left turns. Have you seen this before? Feels like a problem in the differential part of the transmission? Only happens when going left, and only if accelerating. The sharper the turn and harder I accelerate, the more certain it will do it. If I baby it and am careful and coast through most of the turn, I can often avoid it.

      They vary with each year. The dealer can look them up they are the only seals that go in the pump shaft itself. They are scarf cut

    I have a buddy that has a Windstar. Forget the year. He was drivingg one day and all of a sudden it shifted into low gear and wouldn't come out of it. Then a day or 2 later, it shifted fine. A week or so later, it quit moving altogether. Would these be a symptom of the splines stripping out as well or would you think it is something else?

      That sounds like a different concern when this happens that's it no more movement.
