- NOTE: Geometry Nodes has changed from the "attribute" workflow to the new "fields" system since I made that video! Make sure to watch the newer tutorials here on the channel!
Let's make a delicious donut in Blender using Geometry Nodes! No meshes, no particle systems, just GN + modifiers.

I think if u want to have screen cast keys turn on u can open the new dile then turn that on and then you can go file default and click on save startup file this might do the work
finally... thank you for your tutorials..
Thanks for making a tutorial that is actually a tutorial- so many channels that have tutorials are basically follow along with what I am doing without any commentary or reasoning. Key capture alone does not make a tutorial.
I like friendly sounding germans explaining things.
Please keep going
This tutorial is GREAT ! I like working with non-destructive modifiers !
what a cool project:)
You can switch from Data to Object in the material tab to assign the material to a Geometry Node generated object...
No need to even have a vertex at all in the mesh object the GN is assigned to...
But can you set the material index then? Must try...
@@chrisprenn it will be unnecessary then.. The material will be applied to the whole object..
As for cases where you have an object with instances on top.. The instances will have the material of the object being instanced in any case..
Ah, good old donut, can't wait for the other parts !
You are one of the most amazing teachers and you explain errors and difficulties that we might face, not only giving the solution and saying "TA DA it's done". Something a lot of teachers miss nowadays is saying the errors we might face and then giving the solution, so keep up this amazing format. Also, something personal, the blue circle around the mouse doesn't quite help with attention, probably that will help phone users, but what's the point in watching in the phone if we don't follow up the whole tutorial. Your Animation Nodes tutorials are super amazing too, cant wait to watch them all and start experimenting like Frankenstein 🤗😍😍😁🌈🙏
Thank you!
Thanks to Chris I'm less dumb ;)
I can't wait to get home and start this. Thank you!
you could use an image editor panel and import a picture withe the colors then just use the eyedropper and pick a color
For the material stuff, you need to store the material on the object itself rather than the original mesh. For that, you change the drop-down to the right of the material selector in the property editor.
I tried that (a few Alpha versions ago) and then couldn't set the material-index in GN anymore. But will check again! Thnx!
It works!
Always enjoy your tutorials. So helpful. I like the new icon. Let's hope this series brings you an extra million subscribers! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. THANK YOU! Dg.
Oh yeah a million subs sounds great 😬
Thank You
if you want screencast keys to stay on, try opening a new session of blender, touch nothing other than switching it on, then go to 'file>defaults>save startup file'. it'll always be on whenever you open blender.
This is tough
Here before beginners make donuts with geo nodes.
If you hover the mouse cursor over a color field you want to change and press "E" to get a color picker. Maybe that helps you select colors faster.
that also doesn't work across multiple blender instances
Omg, awesome tutorial
Fine work 👍
Another donut tutorial series? Yes! But we'll cook it all up using Geometry Nodes and maybe learn a few things along the way ;) If you follow along, please tag your postings with #gndonut
You can append materials from one file to another can't you?
@@coreys2686 yes but I mean just a quick copy color to clipboard > paste in another blender instance...
Much easier way to make a torus: Curve to mesh with a curve circle in the "curve" and a curve circle in the "mesh".
Instant torus with easily adjustable radii.
That wasn't an option back then...
Also: GN has changed to "fields" now
@@chrisprenn Wasn't meant as a critique, was meant to inform others that watch the video. ^_^
The every first thing I made after 3.0 was released was to recreate my donut scene using nothing but Geo nodes and procedural textures. ^_^
I was like "WTF, why is there no torus mesh!" ^_^
Thank U!
Pretty sure the 'grease' on old-fashioned glazed donuts is sugar that gets poured over the donuts after they come out of the fryer.
nice idea
Amazing!!!
Thanks!
You could use a circle curve to mesh to make the donut without using the modifier.
This video is 2 years old. Many things have changed in that time and can now be done differently ;)
@@chrisprenn that is true. I recently discovered Geo Nodes and I always liked how you explain things. good to see you're still making videos.
well there is a way to copy a color between 2 blenders. over a color you do ctrl c and then ctrl v on the target color
I am hungry!
nice donut :) , 9:32 btw i tried attribute fill with material index and it worked fine
Looks like this is all still rather buggy and random...
@@chrisprenn
I forgot to say I am not using last build , mine maybe 20 days ago , might be that or a proplem with the new one
Nicer Avatar!
Thanks ... took me way too long to make LOL
haha, this is exactly what i've been doing for the past 2 days, since i got the email from Andrew Price about that NFT collage that he's doing.
me 2 ;)
@@chrisprenn Thanks for sharing your process!
Chris P + Geometry Nodes = «loud sounds of hog feasting in procedural trough» ...
Sir my computer Is having low specs but I still want to become an 3d artist I’m confused should do low ploy of high poly
Why texture is changing position when i move the object
Are geometry nodes and animation nodes going their own way now? Or will geometric nodes merge with animation nodes?
They are 2 different things but they can be combined ... I have a tutorial here where I use AN to visualize GN attribute values!
QUERY: geometry nodes are useless right now for game developers as it doesn't turn into a mesh that can be imported into unreal engine 4?
Can we make a poutine with geometry nodes?
Just looked up what a Poutine is ... now I'm hungry!
Please provide a link to Blender Guru's NFT Project. This Project is so exciting, amazing idea. I immediately joined it and made a project just for his idea
sadly almost all nodes have changed now
Yes. See video description 😉
This tutorial is simply problematic.
A lot of times you display some sort of lack of confidence, or you do something then regret it and say "oh, that's not gonna work". This isn't how tutorials work. You're not supposed to show us your mistakes because that just confuses us.
Also, a lot of times you stop explaining and start mumbling quietly before saying "aaaaand that's how it's done". If this is a beginners tutorial then you're supposed to explain step-by-step instead of thinking we can read your mind.
This is a tutorial from when Geometry Nodes was completely NEW and also completely different from what we have now (!! this video is 3 years old !!) and this tutorial was made to show how to figure new things out and trouble shoot along the way
