    This is the best video on repairing Honda carburetors. I pulled mine off and cleaned it only to have it hard to start. This video shows what I did wrong by not having the choke lever in place before I installed it. Thanks SO much.

    Thank you for the clear, thorough, and accurate demonstration. My symptoms were: engine starts and runs a few seconds then quits. I could not start it after that. I left it alone, and tried again. It ran a few seconds then quit.
    My guess: Something is preventing fuel from reaching the combustion chamber, so I took the carb off and apart and removed a tablespoonful of rust from the float bowl, then cleaned it up and reassembled it. Success!

    Its probably been over 5 or 6 years since i cleaned a carburetor out, so my first attempt at cleaning it I didn't remove the jets (just shot carb cleaner through them) and that didn't work. This video reminded me to remove them and clean them more carefully. Now my Honda is back to running on the first pull after sitting since 2020. Thanks for making this video!!

    Great video, this was the fix that my lawn mower needed. My mower had been sitting unused for 2 years and it wouldn’t start. I first replaced the gas, then changed the oil, then replaced the spark plug, and then sprayed starting fluid in my carburetor, all without any success. The video instructions were easy to follow and my mower worked just like new after. I used a sewing needle to push through the holes since I didn’t have the wire gadget he used. This was easier than I expected.

    Thanks!... Good video. I subscribed. Comments: Brush out the air filter before reinstalling. Suggest to those doing this for the first time, that they consider taking some pictures of how things are attached before pulling out the carb. In the RUclips "SHOW MORE" area under the description of your video, you might list the tools you use and consider adding links to Amazon for the carb cleaner wire set and cleaner spray you use. BTW, that was a great suggestion to check for leaks after opening the gas valve connecting gas to the carb. I had a case where I didn't tighten the carb bowl cap screw enough once and by accident I noticed gas started dripping out of there. If I had not caught it, because no one told me to check for leaks, and walked away to take a break, I would have come back to a mess, possibly even a fire if the vapors had caught a spark from somewhere.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  5 лет назад +1

      HI John... Great suggestions. I do have Amazon links in some of my other videos. I'll address this one as well... I don't like to suggest brushing out the air filter, only for the reason that I believe it loosens the dirt and it could get sucked into the engine when it starts. I've done this before, even blow the air filter out with a compressor... which is going against my own rules! But I don't like to suggest other people do it! As for the fuel leak.. yep, that could be problematic... :-) Thanks for the comment and the sub!

    Thanks for posting this video. I have about a 10+ year old high pressure sprayer with a Honda GCV160, with only about 20 or 30 hours on it. It wouldn't start, I tried almost everything to get it running and was ready to give up on it until I saw your video. I cleaned out the emulsion tube and it runs like new now :). Hey Ruddie, just found your channel when search for vids on fixing a Toro drive unit. I was checking out your mower repair videos and on this one on the Honda carbs, I thought I would share what I learned on them. Honda put a coating on their carbs and bowls to help with a corrosion problem. They don't recommend using harsh carb cleaner or brake cleaner on them. As it will strip that coating off shorting the life of the carb. If you use a carb cleaner ONLY, blow it off or wash it off. And don't use steel wool or sandpaper on them for the same reason. I heard about this from other engine guys and checked and confirmed it with Honda. If you you have one that just can't be rebuilt to run, the OEM ones are not expensive. They have general carb that when you get it, you might have to swap out the choke and/or the throttle shafts with old carb. The basic carb is the same for all engines.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the Tip! The steel wool works for a while, but yea you're probably right, it'll get all messed up again in a while... but the new carbs are only 15 bucks on amazon...!

    I recently bought a Craftsman self propelled mower with a Honda engine from a guy off Craigslist that would not start. For about a month I watched any video I could on this issue. I was fed up and I said this was the last one I was going to watch. With a name"Take a bath productions" & dirtiest looking engine I didn't expect much. That is until you said these words "push that back so that it will mesh with the choke and the carburetor" I went back to 11:27 & I played it back over & over. Nobody else on any of these "how to" videos mention that NOBODY. You sir deserve a big thank you! It was a simple fix that ended a lot of frustration..

    I was taught at a very young age and have did this Religiously since....... before you start ,especially if your gunna tear it down any way......CLEAN it GOOD FIRST then you don't get dirt inside anything PLUS then you can notice if you have other issues......cracked or rotted fuel lines bent linkages missing springs or screws !!! I do this with every thing I work on saves you from tearing it apart again........try this you will see all the benefits

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  5 лет назад

      Sometimes I do clean it first.. sometimes I don't... the only benefit I can see is you don't get as dirty when you're working on it. IF i'm going to clean the carburetor anyway, it doesn't really matter. If the carb was in real bad shape, most of the time, I'll replace the fuel line too... But it's just a matter of preference... Thanks for the comment.

      Take a Bath Productions I saw a good idea for removing and replacing the Honda carb.
      Get 2 pieces of threaded rod same size as the two bolts, remove one bolt and replace it with the threaded rod, do the same for the other bolt, and reassembly is much easier.
      Just reverse the process and save the 2 pieces of threaded for next time. These Honda carbs are extremely fussy, not as robust as Briggs. Require much maintenance!

    Take a bolt the same size as the original for the carb but slightly longer. Cut the hex head off and using a cut off wheel to make a notch for a screw driver. Then you screw that into the engine housing and slide all your gaskets and parts over the bolts. Then you simply hold the carb tightly and remove one modified bolt and replace it with the original bolt, dont tighten completely before doing the second bolt so you can make sure everything is aligned. I find this saves me time on Honda ( and cussing) and any carb that has multiple gaskets.

    I think I would’ve sprayed this down with a degreaser or Dawn dish soap and hit it with the water hose to clean off a lot of that dirt first. Ah ha. I did not know about the automatic choke alignment.

      I always use a pump up sprayer with simply awesome dollar store cleaner and dawn dish soap. Let it soak , then use my pressure washer before even thinking about opening up a lawn mower. Even blowing off the loose stuff is better than taking apart something and risking junk getting into the carb. On Honda mowers, an ultrasonic cleaner works better than anything I have ever used, including brake cleaner. You cannot reach internal passages on those carbs. The low speed idle circuit always gets clogged up on those. I clean them, if that dont work, I order a chinese replacement for $15. Never had one fail yet.

      Try looking at the throttle spring, most of the time, it's on a tab that you can bend to speed up or slow down the motor... if it's not that, then maybe the linkage went back wrong

    What does it mean when there is oil on the filter?
    I changed the oil and it ran for 1/2 a second and died. It never started again. If I pull for a while there will be oil on spark plug not gas. Putting gas in the carb doesn't make it fire.

    • @JLPicard440
      @JLPicard440  7 лет назад

      Peter B. Could be that the crank case is over filled with oil.... if it's not that u could have bad rings....it won't start if the plug has oil on it

    • @LivingLife128
      @LivingLife128 6 лет назад +1

      if you tipped it an odd way these engines get oil in the cylinder. usually call tell by oil coming out of the carb into the air filter. the way to fix it is to remove the spark plug and pull the cord till it stops spraying oil out of the spark plug hole. after that put the plug back in and keep pulling until it starts. when it does start, its gonna smoke like heck burning all the oil . After a while it will stop and all should be good .

    • @suggesttwo

    • @LivingLife128
      @LivingLife128 6 лет назад

      did you pull the plug and try to clear the cylinder of oil? if you got oil in the cylinder it will hydro lock. pull the spark plug, rotate the blade and shine a flashlight into the spark plug hole. you should be able to see if the piston is moving while the blade turns. if not you might have broke a rod

    • @suggesttwo
      @suggesttwo 6 лет назад

      Whyme123 not yet. It's winter and the oil will be like malasses. The connecting rod is ok. It fired once after the first oil change and never again last summer. The piston definately going back and forth. You must be right.

      They are actually very good mowers until you store them with old gas. Thats the NUMBER ONE ISSUE with all Honda mowers. They are built to much tighter tolerances than the other brands. Which explains why they run much quieter and smoother.
