You get companionship when you get home, but it is a living animal that you have to take care of, which may conflict with vacation plans, family (allergies or going to have a pregnant woman over), and have to take care to feed it and clean the litter box. That said, I really enjoyed my roommate’s cat after a long day of work/school and it would climb up to me and rest on my chest as I took a nap on the couch. Heartwarming memories.

I worked without holiday for 3 months on and off in toxic construction industry, design and site management. Made it one and a half year and put me on edge in a very bad state. One phone call can instantly turn my mood from 0 to 10 and took me more than a year to fully healed both mentally and physically. No money is worth it. Actually dividing by the hours and hospital bills its even worse.
Not to mention the jobs themselves, which require you to be on call 24/7, spend long hours in stressful conditions, and take on a lot of responsibility.

I work with the homeless, and I can tell you that many of them are just like Eleanor. They are complex people with myriad histories, and when you talk to them you realise that anyone can become homeless and crazy. We have a guy with somehow same scenario here in our neighborhood. He's a teacher and an engineer. Worked insanely alot and really smart guy but ended up crazy. He started measuring objects randomly and spouting some theoretical words. We call him Engineer coz he forgot his name.

I think the story here is more about burnout. She had two very high stress jobs. Doctors and Lawyers have the highest suicide rates in America. She would've been fine if she had just picked one or hell, spend a few years as a lawyer and then be a doctor. It's not that she burned out because she's a woman it's that she pursued the two highest stress jobs in the country at the same time with no break in between.
And on top of that, she probably started burying herself in work (along with buying more cats) to distract herself from her declining mental health; only making things worse.
Having too much work probably left her zero time to have friends, spend time with family or find somebody to be with so the cats probably filled a void
The point is not to go overboard to prove people wrong or prove a point to them when they have literally nothing to do with your life. Rather than utilizing feminism to pursue her own goals and new possibilities, she utilized it as an "in your face" argument and destroyed her personality in the process.

Majority of homeless people have had extraordinary lives. It’s hard for me to find this funny since it’s kinda true once you talk to someone on the street. One story I read about was an older man lost his wife, the love of his life and couldn’t handle the pain, turned to drugs and ended up losing his house. I sometimes think, no matter how successful one becomes homelessness is not out of the question.
I had a boss once who claimed to love God and be such a Christian and yadda yadda. There were one or two times where a homeless person approached one of us, this one in particular asking if I'd buy him a coffee. I was broke so I just said sorry man, I'm broke. I hear my boss shout from the other side of the vehicle, "Fucking loser!" After we finish up and are pulling off, he must have noticed my disdain for that kind of behavior because he started acting like a little child that pissed their pants. "Man, I guess this job has just given me a hard heart." I wish I would have told him it wasn't the job, it was his rightwing politics of shitting on anyone his masters on the TV told him to. I joined that job early enough in the Trump administration to tell myself, alright, sure, I'll give one of these freaks the chance to prove me wrong. He turned out to be just the dishonest, disrespectful, disorganized, dumb as fuck retard as I assumed they all are. I quit eventually but that retard has contacted me more than a couple times asking if I'd like to come work for him again. I seen the story on Invisible People youtube channel. He was a lawyer for over 30 years and lost his wife. We put so much pressure on ourselves to survive the rat race that we lose our mind and turn to smoking drinking and sex for escapism.
Honestly, this is depressing because it is so realistic. People really can burn out, and the cumulative effects of alcoholism and depression- not to mention early-onset dementia- can reduce people to something very much like this.
This is what is criminal about so many corporations in the USA of today. I've always hated them as there were a ton of strays around the neighborhood growing up, but recently the thought of having one very vaguely appealed to me (still was never gonna get one, but I could fathom tolerating one) and then I read some person's account of having to clean up whatever this "spraying" thing cats do. Didn't even want to know more, not interested. Say what you will about a cat's personality or potential for companionship, they fucking stink in multiple ways. And even most dogs aren't big enough dicks to go around pissing on stuff in the house to claim the territory.

I once knew a lady that started rescuing the feral cats on her street, she’d trap and fix them. In just a few short years, she accumulate 19 cats, and all 19 lived inside her 3 bedroom house. Her house was completely destroyed, and you can only imagine what it smelled like inside, disgusting. I felt sorry for the husband, why he tolerated it and let it happen is beyond me. That was in 2005, I’m sure she kept going, because there were still plenty of feral to trap.
It's funny that you mention this, I had a neighbor who lived across the street from my parent's house who had 100 cats in her home. Her name was Tammy. My mom and I knew of Tammy and would say hi from time to time if we crossed paths but never got too close. About 5 years ago my parents had a falling out but Tammy and my mother got close as friends. This lady apparently Not Only had 100 cats in her home but also had A CAT SHELTER TOO, in a separate location. One day I went to her house to talk to her, as soon as she opened the HOLY SHIT, a wall of ammonia HIT MY FACE. I instantly teared up and I could taste her house in the back of my mouth I wanted to throw up. The was the most painful 15 minute conversation I've ever had. I took a shower immediately after and rinsed my mouth with SCOPE. Apparently she was in the Vietnam War, met a man later on, got knocked up, became a single mother and became some sort of asexual feminist. Just her thing I guess. I always pitied her. A serious, 100% cat lady.

I had an great-uncle who was exactly like this. He earned a lot of money working as a head chef on a cruise ship for a number of years. I only remember his twilight years of living in a shabby, one bedroom shack on the east end of town. He had no close friends other than my grandmother. Never a drunk or anything to my knowledge, just never saw anything in his wealth, I guess. When he died, his kids fought over the inheritance because of course they did.

From what I found men want to go to prove something or satisfy their ego's well women go to prove and justify that they are equal. I worked without holiday for 3 months on and off in toxic construction industry, design and site management. Made it one and a half year and put me on edge in a very bad state. One phone call can instantly turn my mood from 0 to 10 and took me more than a year to fully healed both mentally and physically. No money is worth it. This lady apparently Not Only had 100 cats in her home but also had A CAT SHELTER TOO, in a separate location.
One day I went to her house to talk to her, as soon as she opened the HOLY SHIT, a wall of ammonia HIT MY FACE. I instantly teared up and I could taste her house in the back of my mouth I wanted to throw up. The was the most painful 15 minute conversation I've ever had. I took a shower immediately after and rinsed my mouth with SCOPE.
Apparently she was in the Vietnam War, met a man later on, got knocked up, became a single mother and became some sort of asexual feminist. Just her thing I guess. I always pitied her.

Me too, I think it's a common medical disorder that people use animals to cope with mental conditions. Like a drug.
I had an great-uncle who was exactly like this. He earned a lot of money working as a head chef on a cruise ship for a number of years. I only remember his twilight years of living in a shabby, one bedroom shack on the east end of town. He had no close friends other than my grandmother. Never a drunk or anything to my knowledge, just never saw anything in his wealth, I guess. When he died, his kids fought over the inheritance because of course they did.

Nah. I think it's cause she didn't care about her mental health. This happen to people that doesn't care about mental health or trauma or some issues. That's why she had this breakdown. She kind of had 2 jobs.

@Captain McDog Ya well I did a study in Sociology a couple years ago why men and women go to college. From what I found men want to go to prove something or satisfy their ego's well women go to prove and justify that they are equal. I think a part of the reason in most cases men we are taught to be the "dominant one" so men will date down instead of someone of similar caliber well... not to mention society has kind of brainwashed women that they can do it all but the truth is men or women can't excel at everything at least not all at once.
