- Welcome to the third recital in our series of online organ recitals from the loft of St Giles' Cathedral, Edinburgh.
This recital is given by the Cathedral's Assistant Organist, Jordan English, and his programme is below.
Prelude in B minor BWV 544 - J.S.Bach
Elegie in C - C.H.H.Parry
Master Tallis' Testament - Herbert Howells
Improvisation on Ein feste Burg - Bernard Rose
Acclamations (Suite Médiévale) - Jean Langlais
The present St Giles organ was built in 1992 by the Austrian firm of Rieger Orgelbau, in consultation with Herrick Bunney and Peter Hurford. The instrument, with its distinctive case of Austrian oak designed by Douglas Laird, stands in the South Transept.
The 1992 organ was completely new, except for the Pedal Open Wood 16′ and the Bombarde 32′ which were retained from the previous instrument (Willis III 1940). In addition, the lowest seven pipes of the old 32′ Double Open Wood are mounted at the back of the case and form the bass of the Untersatz 32′ - the remaining metal pipes of which form part of the façade.

One of my favorite works by Bach. And performed with mastery I must say! Kudos!
The Bernard rose improvisations are fresh - great - thank you - and with Rose and Langlois - what a wonderful collection....
Wonderful. Yes the two cameras is an excellent addition. I love this organ and have enjoyed its fulsome crisp sound as a relief chorister in the 1990s. Herrick Bunney played Kenneth Leighton’s Fanfare as my wife to be walked up the aisle - I felt like Dr Who being called to the Sanhedrin on Galifrey.... and as my wife and her husband, we walked back down the aisle to the Mendelssohn Sonata No 2 Allegro as the Exeunt. Wonderful and I still feel the joy of that music today - and the joy of marrying my wonderful wife. Thank you for this music. As two Antipodean Presbyterians, we valued our decade in Edinburgh.
Thank you for the online recital. Great idea the two cameras.
Am I the only one who finds it interesting that the (sub) organist at a Scottish cathedral is named Jordan English? ;-)
