St Giles' Cathedral is the historic City Church of Edinburgh. With its famed crown spire it stands on the Royal Mile between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse.
Also known as the High Kirk of Edinburgh, it is the Mother Church of Presbyterianism and contains the Chapel of the Order of the Thistle (Scotland's chivalric company of knights headed by the Queen).

St Giles' Files Ep 6: A Big Bit of Stone
St Giles' Cathedral was founded in 1124. It's Edinburgh's historic heart, where Queen Elizabeth’s coffin lies at rest. One of the most beautiful cities in the world!
Fantastic! So many memories of singing this as a lad.
Am I the only one who finds it interesting that the (sub) organist at a Scottish cathedral is named Jordan English? ;-)
One of my favorite works by Bach. And performed with mastery I must say! Kudos!
off the shoulder
Brings me to tears each time; also brings back lots of memories when I sang in the choir at the Anglican Church of Saint John The Evangelist, Geelong West, Victoria, Australia many years ago. We sang it a number of times over the years. Gary Cowling was our choirmaster and organist. Laurie.
Terrific! Well done to you all. Doing it tomorrow at St Mary Radcliffe and this is a marvellous - if daunting model to aspire to.❤
Perhaps my favourite bit in the whole thing is at 53.50/51/52!
'Jesus The Crucified' must surely be one of the most beautiful hymns ever written.
An absolutely beautiful and so sensitive performance of this wonderful work.

This is one of the most beautiful "The Crusifixion" I've heard! Wonderfull!
reverend paisley' s ghost is stil in this sectarian community church
I found the Vierne Final rather bland.
It doest matter WHERE those "important" men were when they made their anti-Irish decisions.
Beautiful performance
Moving performance; one question: why did you omit the 'I adore thee' hymn? Sung this many times.
Listening to this and want to congratulate the Organist. Blessings.
Thank you so much
I had the pleasure of attending an organ recital here in November, 1997, and have just viewed the Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen. Loved hearing the organ again all the way over here in Ontario, Canada!
Haw meny bells are here and the huge bells and haw tonns kg ?
So fleet of foot and a true inspiration, Jordan. Very impressive indeed. Thank you for a great performance.
Beautiful! So helpful to meditate on our precious Saviour on Good Friday. A thousand thanks.
Bello canto, sublime, hermosa presentación. Felicitaciones. Un gran coro
Beautifully sung and perfectly recorded. A rare treat where words and music speak for themselves with no distractions. Thank you for this.
Excellent performance ,great musicality. Thaankyou
Too bad more of the Willis wasn't retained! Enjoyed the recital though!
A very moving performance. This is my third time listening. Sang in our local church choir a number of years ago. Greetings from New Zealand.
Bravo 👏
😍😍😍
Thank you for this recording St Giles Choir.
This is the second year that our choir cannot performance the Crucufixion... we miss it so much! It is one of the highlights every year and became such a nice tradition in our community to sing or come to listen to. So thank you for ding this and sharing it!
This link will go live at 6.00pm (GMT for anyone watching abroad) on Sunday. ruclips.net/video/_tshvog2Eow/видео.html
I like to listen to the St Giles organ. Although the sound of an organ via RUclips can not be as in live performance I try to reach the beauty of the sound of this organ my daughter felt (and described to me) on a recital there during her visit to Scotland.
Thank you Mr English for the wonderful festive music. The tonal palette of the Rieger was on abundant display! What was the reed stop for the Away in manager verset?
Thanks Ravi, glad you enjoyed it. Jordan tells us the reed stop was the Hautbois.
Love it😍Great playing man!
Organ has great voicing.
Thank you so very much for this wonderful presentation on the King of Instruments. Merry Christmas 2020 to you from Vermont, USA.
Very interesting - thank you. it has always been a “public” building re-shaped by each generation. I agree that whether you like it or not, it is an historic site of national significance and you have an opportunity to re-explore the variety of “intersectionality” of meaning that exists all at teh same time in that space. I remember being allocated a seat opposite the minister Gillesbuig Macmillan in the diner for breakfast on the express early train to Newcastle. As we ate the excellent British Rail breakfast, we argued the concept of accepting the “dirty money” proceeds from John Major’s newly introduced National Lottery. i was, of course, young and idealistic in spurning the use of such proceeds, while he was, naturally, older and “pragmatic”.... he must have had trouble digesting his breakfast. However, each time I now occasionally return to Scotland and to Edinburgh from living abroad, I yearn to reconnect with the quiet early morning communion in the Holy Cross Aisle, or what used to be a delightful 8pm Sunday quiet worship in the Preston Aisle. Each time, I am struck by the significance of our shared national history in that place. the complex competing agendas frequently memorialised in adjacent locations. The 19th century’s recreation fo an imagined past. What do you explain to the museum crowd and to the Presbyterians from the antipodes???? Not easy to reconcile. You explain the rich, complex messy life of a nation who got many things wrong, but some things right. I love the place and remember with joy the sun shining through the windows on a sabbath morn as i progressed with the choir in bizarre hair shirts to a an outlandish modern organ, singing the hymns of my ancestors to a diverse global crowd. I snuggled into one of the royal pews with the woman I would marry one crowded midnight Christmas Eve amongst a crowd too full to furnish a seat elsewhere, and during a very boring sermon, whispered my proposal in her ear. We married there 12 months later on a crisp cold December day which I began with a communion amongst four people in the Holy cross Aisle, one of whom was the homeless bag-man who attended each service, and whom the choir gently surrounded and encouraged, thereby shielding the shocked American tourists from having to take the bread and cup from him next. I think you do a great job. Thank you. Our national and personal history collide in a messy space of contradiction - how Scottish. the English tried to burn it three times, and yet it still flourishes - nec tamen consumebatur.
Thanks David, a great reply. A lovely Christmas story.
The Bernard rose improvisations are fresh - great - thank you - and with Rose and Langlois - what a wonderful collection....
