- As we look forward with hope to the gradual resumption of Sunday worship in St Giles’, the Choir has prepared a work for Palm Sunday which is a stalwart of the late nineteenth century repertoire. The Crucifixion by John Stainer is “A Meditation on the Sacred Passion of the Holy Redeemer, for two solo voices and chorus, and interspersed with hymns to be sung by the congregation”. The performance, recorded by the Choir in lockdown, will be released on the St Giles’ RUclips channel at 6pm on Sunday 28th March, along with words for those who wish to join in the hymns from home.
'Jesus The Crucified' must surely be one of the most beautiful hymns ever written.
An absolutely beautiful and so sensitive performance of this wonderful work.
Beautifully sung and perfectly recorded. A rare treat where words and music speak for themselves with no distractions. Thank you for this.
This is the second year that our choir cannot performance the Crucufixion... we miss it so much! It is one of the highlights every year and became such a nice tradition in our community to sing or come to listen to.
So thank you for ding this and sharing it!
Fantastic! So many memories of singing this as a lad.
Brings me to tears each time; also brings back lots of memories when I sang in the choir at the Anglican Church of Saint John The Evangelist, Geelong West, Victoria, Australia many years ago. We sang it a number of times over the years. Gary Cowling was our choirmaster and organist. Laurie.
Beautiful! So helpful to meditate on our precious Saviour on Good Friday. A thousand thanks.
This is one of the most beautiful "The Crusifixion" I've heard!
Wonderfull!
Beautiful performance
Terrific! Well done to you all. Doing it tomorrow at St Mary Radcliffe and this is a marvellous - if daunting model to aspire to.❤
Thank you so much
Listening to this and want to congratulate the Organist. Blessings.
Thank you for this recording St Giles Choir.
A very moving performance. This is my third time listening. Sang in our local church choir a number of years ago. Greetings from New Zealand.
Bello canto, sublime, hermosa presentación. Felicitaciones. Un gran coro
Perhaps my favourite bit in the whole thing is at 53.50/51/52!
Moving performance; one question: why did you omit the 'I adore thee' hymn? Sung this many times.
An absolutely beautiful and so sensitive performance of this wonderful work.
