You know what I learned from watching the segment, crime does pay, 48 months in jail? And he stole over $1 million? Imagine the other people who steal less than he does, and are never caught?, Truly disgusting.

Fix it by eliminating such socialist programs. Socialist EBT and other such programs are not charity but rather theft because this tax money was taken from people by force and against their will. Charity can never be taken from tax dollars because charity is given of ones own free will and taxes are not. People are working too hard to support their own families to have the government steal our hard earned money and give it to people who have done nothing in return. Socialism is evil for this and many more reasons.

This happened to me and now I use the app to freeze and unfreeze EVERY time. The man in the story has to do that, we all do.

It is 😢 they somehow used my physical card, that was in my wallet, in Maryland. They tried to take 1400 but I had only the benefits received that morning 500$ so they spent all of that 😢 it makes me so upset dude it feels gross

They tried to take 1400.00 but that amount was rejected cuz I only have 535 & my son is going through puberty so he eats a lot. Ebt isn't meant to cover all food costs, it's a supplement program. Groceries cost has gone up so much the past 3 years. 2 years ago we only received 300$ and was really hard to have enough food. Ebt we only get food benefits so I can only buy food, there is no cash possible with my card. Please educate yourself.

I saw a news conference in Orange County California and they said you should change your pin the night before your benefits hit your account. That way if your card has been compromised they won't have access to the card with the old PIN number

I know it's a inside job. When those people enter a pin or change their pin number. It's stolen from them through that call center. They can't tell me the customer service center nothing to do with it. Yes it can be taken by skimmers but it the state call center too.

If a private sector company was operating this way they would be out of business in a couple months. Their doors would be closed permanently. But the slow moving wheels and incompetence of the government just passes the twelve million in losses to innocent taxpayers. No accountability for their poor performance.

Why are EBT cards being used in ATMs? Had to Google that and apparently more than food benefits is used on those cards so yeah, can be used to get cash. Seems weird to me especially if ATMs are a problem.
Some casinos have a machine that will withdrawal cash from EBT.
There are other benefits besides food stamps being deposited onto ebt cards. Cash assistance, child support for instance.
You CAN NOT WITHDRAW CASH FROM EBT! if you have cash assistance then yes but not for food benefits. And if most states are like mine a whole lot more people get food assistance than cash assistance!

The inside jobs are the ones at the stores where these people shopped at. Those stores allow the skimmers to be placed on the machines or just not checking at all to make sure the a skimmer isn’t attached.

They have cash assistance And food stamps on the card. You can't get money from card if you just have food stamps benefits. Two separate benefits. Put on the same card. So if u only receive EBT food then you have no cash to get from the atm. Your welcome.

Government scams go on for months or years. Government employees have no incentive to solve such problems. In fact they have incentive to open up such holes, especially if they like to tell their friends about them.

I worked in a large part of the government. Few could live on those wages. They were more upset than the public as they learned or welfare fraud.

I read several reports citing number of CA public service jobs in emergency, prison, transport and law enforcement tend to game the overtime system as they approach retirement boosting some pensions to well over six figures with a number of fire service captains retiring at over $300K typically at 50-52 years old. To be fair, some fire personnel have acquired life expectancy reducing medical conditions due to chemical, gas and heat exposure however the same remuneration applies to all personnel whether on the front line or never having been near an actual fire.
The ebt card is similar to the edd card, unprotected without a chip! Also, government needs to develop an app with more strict protection features! It'll cost more to produce but compared with the current losses, it makes sense, doesn't it?
The government doesn't develop these, a third party card issuer does and the government contracts them to do it. Effective governance controls and oversight by civil servants are where the failre lies.

It is getting harder to live in America. I feel bad for the recipients. It seems ever since the state limited face-to-face transactions, theft has become an issue. Security measures should've been in place from the very beginning before implementing EBT cards, and punishments need to be harsh. Also, they just need to open their offices again to process things face-to-face.
What does that have to do with folks using the machines to get their money. You don't go to office to pull your money. You use a machine. Like every body else. They just need to have security measures tight. So theft of anybody funds won't be scammed or stolen.

Grocery stores deliver now , if the assistance is for food on the table then make the recipient fill out and send in a grocery list and have the store deliver or recipient go pick it up. It would be a lot cheaper than the broken system in place now !

I believe I've been "Skimmed" by way of my regular ATM Bank Card at Mini-Mart Gas Station's a few times but, it's been relatively small amounts each time. The way "Old-School Thieves" might but, nothing major like this. Whether years ago when I was on Food Stamps or not.

They also have it to where you can get the hot meals program and use your EBT card at Jack In The box and Popeye's Chicken did you know that? And as far as eating junk well yes they want people to eat that mess as well as well as people paying out of their pockets all the food they supply for us is toxic and junk no matter how it's paid for all of the food in United States of America has chemicals in it which in other countries are banned so you're not excluded from the science experiments either

💡 To easily find your balance, just purchase something cheap, like a candy bar with EBT. Then, look at the balance amount before shopping.

The best solution would be to make EBT snap cards embedded with a smart chip and have the ability with tap and pay technology

The only way we can fix this is to put them in jail for a long time.
These people are working with others in other states. My Father in law receives food stamps and one day me and him went to the store so he could shop when we got to the register there was no money on the card. We learned that a meat market in New York had drained the card twice of all it's money. Turns out there are other cases according to reviews on their google review board. They knew when my father in-law was getting his money which right there tells me that this could also be someone inside...it was taken very early in the morning from that meat market which tells me they are part of the scam.
Going through it right now for the third time 😢this gotta be internal job too I have my suspicion investigation too looking at more facts that wasn't mentioned in the story.
Every time it never fails, most thefts are internal, either employee, former employee or someone close to either. If CA was not soft on crime, this would not have gotten to this point. Newsom sits in office only to garner votes for next campaign, useless. Votes for tough on crime governor all the way down to law enforcement is the only way.

Yes, but these are often emergency food funds for people who might be close to losing phone service. However I just read that AT&T must provide cell service at no cost if someone requests it, AT&T is fighting this legal requirement

My daughters were stolen 3x last yr. All stolen from the same place walmart with same city ect. Online tons other say theirs were stolen from the same place same location. Why didnt they block that location? They were even aware of the place

They'restill the old style swipe cards here, which aren't as secure as more current chips and tap systems. That would go a long way.
It's my understanding the majority of the losers are the holders of the cards. They go without until next month's refill.
I was surprised to hear that a recipient can use a ebt card to get cash at a atm…..I would think it would be safer just to use it at whatever store you’re shopping at…..and check your balance before you shop….
Not really if it's a cash benefit only used once at an ATM would be safer than swipping at the gas station at the store etc. Also if the recipient 'cashes the check' at the ATM and then changed their passcode every month there's nothing on the card to steal
They stole mine and my card never left my purse. OF COURSE IT'S AN INSIDE JOB, they don't reimburse you a 100% and if 10 days past before you report it you won't get it back enough if you do file a police report

They need to fix this skimming issue! ATMs need to be more secure because if they can skim your EBT they can skim your Debit and Credit cards.
There are cameras over the registers. Cover the area when you put in a PIN #.

Buy your groceries online for delivery or pickup. This helps reduce the opportunity for skimming. Ive been using EBT for almost a year now after job loss, and havent yet had a problem. I only physically buy from stores I am sure wont have skimmers at their registers. Like Trader Joe's. And if youre still unsure of the keypad, hand your card to the cashier and have them scan it on the register, not the keypad.

Okay people you cannot withdraw food stamp money understand that the electronic benefit card also holds cash for some people actual cash cash assistance to be used to purchase items that you may need or to pay bills and your rent things like that. So people have food balance food only. But also some people get general relief and Cal's work cash and food which is called snap or CalFresh. Food stamp and cash withdrawal are not the same. If you have cash benifits also then that is money. Cal fresh and cash aid benefits for families with kids. If no kids you can get food benefits only.or general relief
Apparently, the part that is broken is using the EBT "anywhere." Force the card to be used only at specially designated protected places. Yup, might be an inconvenience to the user, but it is not inconvenient to me - it's my money in the first place.
Make your food purchases online, then pick them up or have them delivered, no need to swipe.
