I been deep dropping twice recently in the Santa Monica Bay on the Spitfire recently, the Rock Cod is excellent quality.
Nice!
The SPITFIRE is nice. Got married on it..
Ali seeing how excited you were with that big red, run your boat up to Channel Islands. You’ll be losing your mind
I need to!
Dave Downing is the GOAT.
He's alright. haha. Dave is the man.
Ahhhhh. I can relax and enjoy two of the best Gentlemen Anglers on earth.
Wow, thanks!
Very good fishery.
Yes. It's a ton of fun.
Love me some rockfish too, but mine come Alaskan waters.
We will take them all.
Great video guys. I still have so much difficulty identifying the cow cod. What were the distinguishing markers on the one you caught? was it the spikey top fin?
Yeah you can't miss the giant dorsal spines.
Awesome catching. Is there decent size at the 9 mile bank? Is there cow cod at the 9? Is it easy to tell the difference between the red and cow?
Thanks!
Yeah. We get some good fish on the 9. Usually 400' and deeper for bigger stuff. Google pics of a cowcod and save them on your phone. They are more orange, generally huge and have the huge dorsal spines.
So, you are only allowed 1 set of double assist hooks? You can't add another set of double assist at the bottom?
That's a good question. I think you can use two but check the regs in your state. We like the one set because you don't snag as much. Any good fish will just inhale the jig.
Awesome video! What’s the name of the GoPro housing you used?
Hook up baits ! ! ! Can't go Rock fishing without the hook up baits
WE like our Gulp.
Ali, can you recommend any private charters that will take a group out on a day trip to fish these deep areas for rockfish? I’m trying to find a rockfish/bottom fish focused charter. I know they have the open party boats but they typically don’t go out that far
Put me in coach! I'd love to take you guys out there. Hit me on Instagram @bdoali and we can put something together.
What pound braid were they usin?
40# Seaguar Smackdown
You’re out of mission bay? Thought you’d be out SanDiego harbor.
Yes sir. Dana Landing
Your view of cod jigging i came to same conclusion a few months ago. Just like a food palette things change. I grew up killing local giant tuna yellow tails at Cat, but man i turned plan B into plan A back up. Something about catching double 5lb reds.
Yep! We target really big ones 6#-10# and it's a blast.
Bro, what size fishing reel are you using?
Those are fathom 8-25's.
What brand and size jigs are used in the video?
A variety or Williamson vertical jigs.
Where is the catch and cook ?
Check our channel. Some great recipes there.
i didnt think the blown up eyes returned to normal after using a descending tool
Those fish are dead, just being returned to the bottom.
They do. Google it. A lot of science has been done on this. Not 100% but it's better than wasting them.
What rods are you running with those fathoms?
Carnage slow pitch rods.
Looks like you were in 360 feet of water, so not the 9 mile bank. Any hints Ali?
60 mile bank 🤫🤐
WE fish up and down the coast. Finding those deep spots is a challenge and really fun. We fish out to 1200' . Electric reels and gulp are great for prospecting.
Ok here’s what I need to know. Summary. 8 people each can eat 4 tacos. How many rocks should we keep. Give or take 1. Wouldn’t be bad idea to list how much catch we need with each recipe. Eg. tacos. Grouper sandwiches. For 2-4-6-8-12 people. And again your vid cost me cash. Hahahah. You said fish taco enough to make me grab my daughter and head to local fish restaurant hahahah. Thanks again. Send cash.
The meat freezes so well, we vacuum seal it and cook it months later.
What size jigs were you using?
You wanna use heavy jigs so you can reach the bottom fast I usually fish at 400 500 ft and I use from 150 to 300 g good luck
150-300gram typically
Correct!
Go boiz
thx
60 mile bank?
Most likely yea since he said the weather has to be good to go. That bank has some nice ones forsure though
Maybe....
