When I was in primary school in China about 20 years ago the system we used was like this: 90-100: 優 You 80-89:良好 Liang Hao 70-79:良 Liang 60-69:達標 or 及格 Da Biao / Ji Ge under 60:不達標 or 不及格 Bu Da Biao / Bu Ji Ge
now that you mention this, I think back in the days 秀 was the more prevalent word for outstanding in Chinese, since it was 秀才 rather than 優才 for someone who passed the first tier of imperial exams.

In Costa Rican junior and high schools, obtaining less than 70 is failing a course. It's interesting how in these 3 countries the grade required to pass is rather lower.
That is not how I remember it, I remember it as 优,优良/良好,良 ,及格,不及格。 getting a 良 anywhere except PE was terrifying for me. I have never heard of 中 in scoring.

I'm not sure what the passing mark is in East Asian countries but from the looks of it China and Japan treat the 60% mark as a fail grade? But, this is just me speculating. Keep in mind, this system was used until a few decades ago. Now we have ABCDE for middle school(absolute grading), and 1.00~9.00 ranks for highschool(relative grading). It’s hell here.

As the native Chinese speaker, I cannot understand why Korean use "可" when the grade fail. From my perspective, "可" is meant "OK" or "not bad".
There is speculation that this is to avoid negative impact.
