Me too! Thanks for your comment. It made me go for it and it was a success. I would recommend to use a number 5 needle. A 4 is just too small. And also this pattern works very well with colorful yarn!
For those who are shocked by the comments, here is a tip: try to watch the video first for some rounds so you can understand better how the sequence of the pattern goes. Don't give up! And use a marker on the last chain of every round. That will make things easier.
I frogged and started over 7 times!!! Usually after 4 or 5 rounds. I was using a charcoal yarn which didn't help. Finally got round 8 done, then thought I'd gone wrong again. So I laid that aside and started fresh with a light colored yarn. Counted stitches until I was blue in the face, lol! I always put a marker in my first sc at the beginning of the rounds. The problem, I think, for me and most people is the JOIN. I wish that would have been shown and explained a little better. If you read the written pattern carefully, you'll see that you skip the very last sc in each round. It's kind of a stretch to sl st over to the starting sc to make the join, so it seems wrong, but it's not wrong. Yes, you do end up with a visible diagonal seam. That's just the way it is. I've gone back to my original charcoal gray hat, and I think it's finally going OK. I should finish it up soon.
The beginning of a round creates a gapping space that appears to be a stitch. It's the problem with doing stuff in the round. So it always feels like there is something missing unless you do the last stitch tight.
I know how to make an awesome magic ring, I know all the basic stitches and now I can make a pretty ruffled doily that was supposed to be a hat. I used to crochet all the time, maybe I'm just too old to learn again.
I wish I had read these comments before I spent about four hours trying two times to make this. I wanted to make it just like the picture but I am so disappointed. I am 77 years old and have been crocheting since I was 10.
I understood everything I think but I don’t think. Was doing the join correct because the hat seemed to get wider. With each row my join seemed to move over one stitch. Does this make sense?
In the pattern, the fifth round says to sl st into ch, Ch 1, (1sc,ch1,1sc,) ch1 SKIP next sc, 1sc, ch1, twice , Ch1, SKIP next sc, (1sc,ch1,1sc) repeat. Which one???? Your saying instead of skipping, to sc!! So there is an extra count!! Too many stitches
I usually don’t comment, but I have to this time. This was bad. Really bad. Rounds 4-5 are a bust. If you got past that, you’re a genius. I am not a beginner. I’ve been crocheting for years and I have to share that the tutorial on this even confused the mess out of me.
I’m having the same experience. I am so glad to hear I am not the only one having trouble. I like the hat as shown in the video, but I ended up with one whole side, where the joins are that does not look so good. I think diagrams would really help clear up some of the confusion. The video did not really help much, as the exact placement of the stitches at the beginning and end of the rounds does not show clearly.
That looks like a fisherman's trowler, I want to make one for hubby but I think the explorers hat might be more his style. I have looked and looked bu cannot find the pattern. It's called a machault hat, do you think you could do one? or an explorer's hat. These are the ones that trapper's wore back in the day.
Is there anything like that on Yarnspirations.com. I cannot film something from other sites other than there or my own design. I don't have a design like that.
It would help a lot if you don't let your voice drop off at the end of your sentences. It's hard to keep track of the video, audio, and closed captioning all at the same time. Thank you. Btw, I had no problem following this pattern, I'm not sure what issue everyone else was having.
I attempted this THREE times, and each time the pattern failed to turn out like the video. It looked more like a floppy hat. So disappointed. Moving on...
It sounds like you may be accidentally adding stitches in your rounds. Best thing is to count your stitches after each round to make sure you have the right amount of stitches. The stitch count for each row is shown in the written pattern. I also put a stitch marker in the first stitch of each row so I know where the row started.
I would find a different pattern versus motifying this. I am trying to think of the moss stitch available for kids. I will think on it but nothing pops into my mind at the moment.
Love the hat, but the video is hard to see. A little closer and a lighter color yarn would have really helped me out. But I prevailed using both the written and the video. Thanks.
Hi Mikey! Could you please advise what I can do in order to avoid the gaps that appear when starting every new row with the sl sc in the first ch1? Thanks 😊
I have this problem, too. My joins go completely diagonally and ruin the smooth even look of the rest of the hat. Did I do something wrong? I worked with a dark brown, too and had trouble seeing where to make the joining slip stitch. Then you need to make another slip stitch to get in the first ch 1. Then, at the end of the round, it is confusing as to where to make the joining slip stitch. It seems like you would decrease at that point. I was bothered by that and don’t like the prominent “seam” at the joins. Do you have any suggestions on how to make the joins more invisible?
@@lslates2 Hi Linda, actually I realized I was doing wrong the second sl st. So, after I started to do it in the correct loop, the gap was not so big anymore. However, I understand what you mean, because this is now my new problem and by the way in the end of the video, where Mickey is explaining about the edging, I saw that he has this ugly diagonal seam as well. I think it is appearing because we are chrocheting in circles and every increase is moving the joining to the left. I could recommend you to use stitch marker in order not to lose the start of the row. What I will try now is to move this stitch marker one or two loops back or front in order to avoid the diagonal at least. I don't think that the seam will disappear but at least it will be one straight line.
Paulina, i'll answer your question based on how I learned this, NOT based on this video at all bc I just started this video.... I can make a perfect line seam that you can't see at all. When you get to the end of your round you'll have a kinda big gap but make sure you slip stitch into your first stitch of the round, NOT the chain. So skip that big gap and sl st into your 1st stitch and then chain one and put your first stitch of the next round into that same sl st/ch1 space.... Go see "bag o day crochet" channel, Crystal is an AMAZING up close very thorough teacher. She even tells you exactly how many stitches you should have after each row....And she has hundred plus balls of yarn giveaways all the time!! One is ending tomorrow I believe♡.... I'm brand new to chrochet. I have some Red Heart yarn that says it's 4 Medium. 10 oz. I also have a 5.5mm hook which is what it calls for on the label. Will those work?
Use the same hook as the pattern calls for and you can use the same yarn. The hook size generates the size of the overall pattern. If you change it, the hat will be a different size.
I'm not sure I understand. It's not fitting in being too tight? or not long enough. If it's too tight, increase your hook size. If it's not long enough, can you just add more rounds until you are happy with it?
I give up on this pattern. I’ve restarted several times. I can’t get past the first few rounds. I even used the written pattern but to no avail. I came here thinking watching a video would help but it doesn’t. When I saw the comments from ppl who have crocheted for decades I knew my 1 yr of experience wouldn’t be able to do it. I definitely think a much slower, zoomed in approach could possibly help.
Had a hard time. Next time lighter yarn see stitches better. Endedup being real small. No I didn't I'm bad abouts not doing that. Going to have to try and do that.
@@TheCrochetCrowd I know how to do a magic circle but I'm wondering after you make it, do you chain 6 sc's or do you chain one or two, then chain then 6 sc's.
I tried 3x using a magic circle, and failed. Went back to the chain 2 start and it was easier to work in the 6 original sc. Mine was also wonky until round 7 where it started staying round. I think I also kept adding a stitch at the join, and ended up decreasing the last two rows before the bottom band. I also did some decreases in the band to snug up the bottom It fits my husband, but I made it for my dad...hoping it fits him too.
